  1. I grew up and lived for many years in Detroit. Same crappy weather. Hope you like the snow, I hate it so I moved.
  2. was reading your site a bit. Do you do work for this safenet http://www.safenet-inc.com/ ? If so that is too funny. My biggest client moved about 1.5 years ago in a newly constructed building. About 6 months later Safenet moved in as well. I see safenet guys in the parking lot almost every day. BTW it is north of Baltimore MD. Small world, eh? I would not want to paint it.
  3. Did you order the newer type from Blue Jean? The have 2 set screws to hold the stripped wire in place? If so look at the "barrel" that surrounds the plug that is directly behind the part that actually plugs into the red/black thingie (real technical I know). As you tighten/loosen that barrel it pushes on a pin that in turn make the plug get bigger or smaller. Turn the barrel counter clockwise and the plug will shrink in size. Stick it in your amp/speaker and tighten it up. I had the same problem with I got the plugs from blue jean, I was used to plugs that were more spring loaded. I actually think this is a pretty slick little plug once you figure it out. Good Luck
  4. The fighter pilot also has three dimensions of space to work in not two. No matter where the plane goes it is still in the air (assuming he is not hitting the dirt) there is no roads to drive off of and very few other planes to run into. He can crack his beer, drive with his knee, talk on the phone, shoot a missle and pick his nose all at the same time. If he drifts a little up/down, left/right, or rolls side to side no big deal.
  5. No time for pet projects. I am working 50-60 hours on mobile apps with my day job and in the evenings working on my home theater. I have gotten to the point where I hardly ever use a computer for "fun" anymore unless it is to post/read here or look on ebay for more klipsch speakers. Good luck with the phone development...drop me a line once in a while and let me know what you are up to. You interested in some consulting work on the side? I have a customer that is looking for some "real" mobile developers...not just .net people that would like to learn about phones and PDAs. Who knows, maybe you could score some more $$$ to feet your Klipsch habit. Rich
  6. Got your million dollar idea...split it with me when you build it. First a little background. I too am a developer specializing in windows for mobile (phone/pda/etc) applications mostly as a contractor to gov. agencies. I just don't have the time or desire to build it myself. I have the motorolla mx200 phone. You probably got the newer mpx 220. Anyway you need to build a suite of tools related to car things. One can be mileage tracker...every time you fill up the tank enter the gallons and current mileage. It subtracts from previous fill up mileage and keep running totals of MPG, then graph and show the data as needed. Imporve on it by having reminders for oil changes and the like at user defined intervals. Next is a parking meeter minder. You have changable vaues for minutes added by Nickel/Dime/Quarter (5/1/2 keys on phone) when you are 5 minutes from the meter running out the phone vibrates and you go drop in some more change and update the coins, which are in turn minuts on the phone. That is your first two. When you get this built send them to me and I will give you more tasks. Good Luck, Rich
  7. Very nice. I like the color on the walls and the rug in the seating area...nice touch over just plain wall to wall carpet. Glad to see you went the in-wall rack route. I got you PM about my rack pictures and actually got them taken...just never found the time to send them to you or post them here. Sorry about that, but looks like you did just fine without me. Again, nice job!
  8. TonyGeno, A little tar paper, shingles...maybe some duct tape for good measure and you are all set. You are on the inside - who cares what the outside looks like. Seriously, any chance to recess the Heresies a little into the back wall so they are not sticking out so far? I just think having every speaker is a worthy goal and you are so close.
  9. Professor, if Klipsch does not work out send me your contact info and resume. I own a small software development company. I do work for a few large companies. One has an intern program. Just a little south trip down 81 to MD north of Baltimore. Can't make any promices, but they work with and like to hire the best and the brightest.
  10. No WAF even if they look like this??? Since you already have 5 I think you should at least exhaust all possibilities of getting 7 Heresies before you give up.
  11. In the past I had used an academy between both forte and chorus. Chorus/Academy/Chours up front is a great combination. Send me an email (having trouble with PM for some reason) via the forum or to rplace*NOSPAM*@mantistech.com and we can talk a bit. Obviously remove the *NOSPAM* from the email. Thanks, Rich
  12. Yaffstone, are you set on a particular finish on you Academy quest? I have two black Academies. One is absolutely perfect in every way. The other is very close no dings or gouges just slight color fade in a spot or two. 15-20 minutes of work on the one and it will be looking like new. Not really sure why, but black Klipsch speakers do tend to get dull easily. Anyone know why that is? I had told some forum members that if I got rid of them I would let them have first crack. Timing is not right for those members so I will get some pix together and a price if you are interested.
  13. I second the vote for Forward Air. Not quite Klipsch speakers, but I used them to ship a vintage 70s pinball machine that was almost 400 pounds. Because you put your load on a pallet it is moved with forklifts from one location near an airport on to a truck (don't be confused by the word Air in Forward Air they truck the stuff) then off a truck into storage. You have to go to the FA location to pick it up (mine was spitting distance to BWI) so you don't get it on your door step. For a big ticket item it is sort of fun to go to the warehouse and "uncrate" the treasure. I would suggest some sort of crate attached with screws to the pallet. Shrink wrap will not stop a wayward forklift blade. If you want to see what mine looked like after a trip with Forward Air check this http://mantistech.com/Pinball/4MBC/01Crates.htm out. NOTE when you look at the first set of pix I had already taken the crate off of the pallet. PopBumper if you read this I though you might like the pinball pix ;-)
  14. I think they would work great if size was your concern. I have two Academies as surrounds and been very happy with them. For years I had a single Academy a my center and we all know how great a center it is. The only thing I don't know about is how they would work as mains. My guess would be great if it was a movie only room. For a music and movie room I think a 6.1 set up of Forte mains and 4 Academies would sound fantastic and not have too much space issues. Just my $0.02
  15. Did you try searching imdb.com? That site is pretty good with plot lines and such? Any of these? http://imdb.com/find?q=monster%20crane;tt=on;nm=on;mx=20
  16. So after I score my klipschorns last Saturday GaryMD (who helped me with the whole process) invites me over to his pad to listen to his Khorns and hear what vinyl sounds like on good equipment. My 67 year old dad is tagging along for the ride as he is visiting for the weekend on his way to Florida for a few weeks. Well I had no idea what a treat I was in for. My vinyl days ended in the 1986 when I bought a CD player and fell in love with the convenience of the silver disc. My life long collection quickly went the way of a used record store to finance (hardly) some of those same albums bought back on CD. Never gave this much thought except once in a while I wished I had some of those old LPs for arts sake. Up to that point in my life I had always had big box store quality components and speakers. By the time I got my first set of Klipsch speakers and separate equipment my records were long gone. So never really got that cool mix of great source material on great equipment, that all changed last Saturday. I was blown away by the sound. First out of the gate was The Beatles, Here Comes the Sun. About 20 seconds into the song when it really starts to take off I had to open my eyes and look for the center channel between Garys two Khorns. It had to be there even though I could not see it. NOPE just the two giants in the corner. Seriously, I got up and looked for another speaker. Next thing that hit me was the placement of the individual instruments. Not just drums here and guitars therebut I could pick out different pieces of the drum kit a little to the left or back/forward of each other. I heard things it that song I had never heard before and would guess I have heard that song at least 1000 times. Jazz, Big Band and a few other types of music followed each one an incredible treat for my ears. It seamed like I could hear the air traveling through a saxophone or vocal cords actually vibrating. I honestly think if I had been by myself in that room I would have cried. It was an unbelievable experience. My dad and I talked about it like excited little kids all the way home. I tried to explain it to my wife and mom when we got back home. But there was no way I could. Surely I am not doing it justice as I type this so I will quit trying and just thank Gary. Thanks Gary! It was a blast.
  17. Jacksonbart, I have had mine for about 2 months. I really like it. The build quality is outstanding in my opinion. Very solid. I would buy it again. All of my use has been for watching movies, I have been dragging my heals getting DVD-A or SACD material. Looking forward to that soon.
  18. Dare I even put my dream to words here? If she reads this I will need a divorce lawyer. Let's just say Belle or LaScala center channel. Anyone want to split a pair?
  19. After an exhaustive scientific study with a sample size of one (1) I have figured out how long it takes your wife to accept the idea of Klipschorns. Friday (morning) Tell her the plan. Eyes roll, steam comes out of ears some ranting about: Are things EVER going to be right in that room & How many speakers are enough? Saturday Pick up speakers. Very little conversation that day i.e. the silent treatment Sunday Back on speaking terms for general lifebut not one word mentioned about the newest addition to the family. Monday First admission that there is even something new in the house. Short but sweet They sound nice Tuesday (night) Curiosity gets the best of her and she says So WHY are they so big and what makes them so special? A shared bottle of wine and 1.5 hours of listening to music later and it is all smiles followed by They sound amazing and They fit in the corner nicely So there you have it, just 5 days and all is well. Should have done this years ago. Guess I have to qualify my findings by saying in order for this to work for you, you have to be married to a fantastically, wonderful, understanding and all around great person like my wife. She does in fact love music almost as much as I do, but she could care less about equipment and such. Good luck to you, YMMV.
  20. Colin, nice job putting the list together. I will have to give your questions some thought and get back to you. Not to nit pick but I was thinking of Mark Wahlberg's Rock Star from 2001 in your #27 spot. Hardly holds a candle to the likes of Mr. H's O but it did amuse me.
  21. Thanks for the info Dean. I dont think this is the place to learn how to solder. I do have an iron. The type that looks like a pencil with a lamp cord sticking out the back. Not even an on/off switch. That probably give you a good laugh too, thinking of me dissecting the innards of my nice speaker with that. Probably along the lines of a civil war surgeons bone saw used for brain surgery today. I do have a couple of 70s pinball machines that I have to solder something back together on once in a whilebut that is a totally different animal. So how do I go about employing your services? No kids to offer up, wife is 42 and I am 39 so not looking good. You send me the X-overs and I will send you an I.O.U for my first born. You will only have to wait till my next life. Seriously, I would like to do something in the not so distant future, but probably not tomorrow. What order of magnitude are we talking (5, 50, 500 bucks) for both bringing an AK-2 to AK-3 standards or getting a totally new set? What sort of turn around time if we went the fixing up route? I would think if it is at all practical I would want a 2nd set so I dont have to go with out the use of the speakers. Also is there something else I should consider all together like a totally different crossover then the AK line? Any quick and dirty info you want to share as to what some of these parts do and why changing them makes a difference? I am sort of curios to know more. Is it just the old adage you get what you pay for? I have seen some talk on other sites about Modding a DVD player with different electronic parts to give better sound. Is it just the case that in order to save a buck or companies use an inferior generic gizmo in place of a better, more expensive piece? Thanks again, Rich
  22. Yes, those pants make your butt look big
  23. Thank you RickB! Another "Hight Fidelity" fan. Was starting to think I was the only person in the forum that has seen it. I can't imagine anyone seeing it and not liking it. Have you seen the directors cut version or watched the deleted scenes on the standard version? I love the part where John C takes the trip to the burbs to buy the killer vinyl collecting. I bet that scene would make GaryMD sick to his stomach.
  24. Amy, 8 mile and CMD in the same list - NICE!
