  3. just received 94 album lot and included in this was a copy of the chipmunks christmas. we use to listen to this every christmas. Brings back some memories, especially of my brother he loved this thing, will have to keep and let my next child listen to it (god willing) Joe
  4. setting here listening to a few albums tonight and loving the noise eminating from the belles. But just dropped creedence gold on a very nice copy no scratches and very low if any background noise. (first song proud mary) I cant beleive how poor of a job was done by the producer/engineer that put this album togeather. The whole song is masked by a type of white noise in the background. No mistaking this for background noise or static in the album as the next song down on the corner sounds 50 times better and the space between songs is dead quiet. guess it would be beneficial to have a somewhat crappy system just for these type albums. The tubes, belles, & basis bring out everything not just the good Joe

  6. thanks to all so far on this i will try tweaking the weight and see where that takes me i have a test record that covers most of what the ones mentioned here seem to but some of the stuff is greek to me right now, the table seems to be set up pretty good now according to what i can understand on the record, i will have to find ssome reading to figure some more of this stuff out, one thing in particular i am wondering is how i am supposed to know what flutter is supposed to sound like?????? anyway thanks for all the help Joe
  7. where might a person find this set up record, and i cant say i experienced any problems with the stylus bouncing around on the albums maybe i was at least heavy enough to keep from that, at least nothing audiable was showing it to bounce around, i have a stereo test record that talks about vta etc... is this what you are referring to. Joe
  8. well i have to chime in here, I was in this exact state of mind about 1 year ago. i had 2 phase linear model 400 amps hooked up running cornwalls and heresy's 200 watts per channel X 4, phase pre amp, etc... Then i went to garymd's house after his invite and listened to his 17 watt scott 299 hooked to cornwalls kick the living hell out of my 400 watts. i wouldnt have beleived it without hearing it myself. i dont consider myself an audiophile by any means and i have to admit i sometimes dont hear the improvements i am supposed to (I.E. tube rolling) but there was a definate differance between the tube stuff and solid state. I promptly sold my solid state gear that i loved and went crazy buying all tube gear, bottom line if you are happy with your sound and like your gear, DONT go listen to tubes or likely as not you will start looking to upgrade. Joe
  9. I have had my basis 1400 with rb 300 and incognito wire upgrade with grado referance sonata for 6 months now and have loved it. I took a few minutes to adjust some things i thought looked a little out of adjustment. first i bought a mini digital scale to check tracking force it was at 0.7 grahms, grado suggests 1.5 grahms, so i set it to 1.5. Next the arm had a slight lean back lower at the base and higher at the cartridge. i set an old lp on the platter and loosened up the hex that secures the arm to the baseand i simply raised the whole assembly till the arm looked level tightened everything back down. put on some dire straits making movies and love over gold, (this is quickly becoming 2 of my favorite albums) and the differance in sound is crazy. I thought the talk about set up, level, vta, track weight was all a lot of hype. Now i know i was wrong initial impressions are much deeper and tighter bass, better high end, soundstage, and imageing are also better. This seems a little crazy i can only guess that albums have much more music in the grooves than i was picking up. I assume the stylus is getting deeper and making better contact in the groove now on all sides. all this change just by eyeballing level on the arm and adjusting the weight. Anyone know of tools available for a more accurate set up. Or do the tools pertain to a specific table cart setup. time to try pink floyd dark side and see what ive been missing Joe
  10. lite sanding and refinish to match the existing finish, with that said now the bad news. about 90 percent of the time the ring is there to stay (unless you re-veneer of course) not to mention how hard it is to match stain or varnish that is older as they tend to change color with age (called patina) usually the best you can hope for is to sand out enough that it makes the ring hard to see, and to match the stain a little trick is to go a shade darker and litely sand the whole cabinet and then litely stain the cabinet (litely sand meaning just scuff the rest of the cabinet after sanding to try to remove the ring, and then lightly stain the remaining cbinet after staining the ring aera) actuyally quite a task to undertake for a friend would be much easier to just buy some smoked plexiglass and make covers for the tops to disguise the damage Joe
  11. i can definately second the reccomendation for the jolida jd-100 cd player (Tubes) sounds simply awsome, i have read alot of articles on the tojoeb and the shanling 100 model and both are supposed to be awsome as well the shanling wins in the looks department hands down (can find a used one near 1000, i bought my jolida for 750.00 with NOS tubes for 750 and am very happy with it Joe
  12. one more note about the background noise you need a good cleaning machine for all these old albums alot of the noise if not all is from being dirty even if it looks clean, i have bought near 2000 albums from ebay and there are always a few rough ones but that is almost to be expected, check feedback carefully and only deal with sellers that are near 100 percent as they value there feedback and are nearly always willing to refund your money over getting neg feedback. i tried the 2 most popular cleaning machines nitty gritty, and vpi 16 the vpi wins hands down Joe
  13. i would stay clear of the sale on ebay the discription makes no sense at all, any one selling belles surely knows what they are and information is easily available, also no feedback but been registered since 1998 FISHY INDEED, joe
  14. who are you guys ordering these albums thru i would like to take a look at these please Joe
  15. wangdang: glad to hear they arrived in 1 piece i usually have no problems shipping speakers as i always surround them with 2" foam happy you like them also i was going to use them for a ht set up at some future point they were that clean. At least a forum brother has them andd i know they are in good hands. Enjoy the music Joe
  16. welcome to the world of seperates, and vinyl, im sure you will find it a nice place to pull up a chair and relax, (at least till you have to flip that album), for a nice test try to get an album on cd and vinyl and give an A/B listen session i think you will be supprised. Im glad you are happy with the st 70. it puts out some sweet music especially with that blueberry and vinyl and to answer your question "can it get better" OOH HELL YEAH what type of music do you listen to most? i have about 100 doubles of classic rock from the 70,s an 80,s yours for the asking some are very good some not so good bet hey the price is right. can send you a list if you want to pic and choose thanks for sending the box back i do appreciate that enjoy the music Joe
  17. the nitty gritty manual deal cleaner wont do 1/2 the job of a vpi 16.5 i know i sold the nitty gritty to get the vpi and the differance was huge, as far as a table i would look alot further than project your budget will allow a much nicer table i had the(not sure here about the rm, may have been rw, cant remember) project rm 4 and i found build quality was CRAP the plinth was pressed wood painted flat black, and the platter was also pressed wood painted silver the bearing was steel and the clutch some sort of plastic or nylon in my opinion a very cheaply made table for the cost i realize you are talking about one of there higher end models but my opinion is if they will skimp on one model they will on others., i was able to buy a basis 1400 with upgraded rega rb300 arm and a grado referance sonata cart for 1300 shipped to me off audiogon, and have seen several vpi scouts available around 1100 (all good reviews) i would even say a music hall 7 would be a much better table than the project, and leave money for the cleaning machine to boot, i would suggest looking around before buying the project JMHO. Joe
  18. gary i would be interested in hearing your thoughts about the improvements in sound after you get the BB back, and have a chance to listen. didd you have yours upgraded or exchange for a new xtreme Joe
  19. i will take it that no one here is supersticious, it is supposed to be bad luck to kill a cricket in your house or so i have heard Joe
  20. not all women like cheap crap stereo systems i had the bose wave radio i got rid of it i upgraded my system to what you see in the profile now, I LIKE EVERYTHING LARGE!!!! priscilla
  21. as far as a crossover rebuild goes B.E.C here on the forum will bring an A or AA crossover back to spec for you around 100.00 that includes parts and labor so i wouldnt let that be a consideration, and it is something you can wait on if you are happy with the sound you wont realize there is a diffeciency till you upgrade the X-OVERs good luck with the speaks Joe
  22. yes mark can upgrade it no problem, however with the recent drop of 400.00 in cost i would look to mark and see what he has available, you may find he has a used unit there that he completely brings back to original spec and warrantees and can add the cream to it while he is at it, i know his price for a used blueberry will be very close to the 900, and csidering he warrantees them as a new unit a few extra bucks is worth while Joe
  23. take a little more time and read the discription clearly, they will not ship these for the 1149 price that price is for local pick-up only, they state clearly to contact them if you want them shipped (they will give you a quote), absolutely no reason to assume this is a shill auction, a picture says 1000 words speakers look like new there is always a reason to sell something but that reason doesnt have to be a bad one, maybe the ouner didnt care for the sound or finish and is outside the timeline to return them for a refund, or maybe the ouner found a set of heritage they like better. maybe the finish didnt meet the WAF. at any rate dont assume the sale is schill just because!!!!!! i know alot of unscrupulas sellers exist on ebay and elsewhere but there are alot more perfectly legitimate people there also, if you are worried offer to pay for the escrow feature or pay with your credit card which nearly all have fraud protection and will do a chargeback, refunding your $$$$$$$ lastly this seller has sold near 3000 items with only 3 neg comments that is a very good record on ebay, beleive me i have 530 with 3 negs. (some people are not happy no matter what you do) Joe
  24. here is what i hope to be my final step in stereo heaven pair of craigs VRD's juicy music blueberry with nos tube upgrade teac X1000R reel to reel marantz model 125 tuner nakamichi RX 505 cassette jolida jd100 CDP with tube upgrade basis 1400 TT with rega 300, incognito wires, grado ref sonata cartridge last but not least the MIGHTY KLIPSCH BELLES setting here listening to vinyl frampton im in you and sounds so sweet "LIFE IS GOOD" JOE
