  1. Well that has got me a little nervous. I have both of my surrounds (RS-35's) on those drywall screws. I went big, they supposedly handle 30lbs (I think), and the 35's are only 12. I think i may have to start thinking about building my shelf underneath them sooner than I planned. I've always planned on putting one there but after hearing your story, I don't want to walk into the room and see spearker components scattered about my floor
  2. My fiencee works with a guy who was very excited to get his bose. He told her that he finally saved up enough money and just got his bose surround system to go with his proj. tv. She looked him straight face and said she was sorry. He was very confused when she said that and asked why. She just told him that he probably paid too much money for sub-par speakers, but if he was happy with them great. He wanted to know what we had at home and she told him that growing up her dad had B&W's (801's) and we have Klipsch reference line (35's). She said he was puzzled at the name, and then said that neither be better than bose because they are the best speakers out there. I guess she just chuckled and left him to his wonderful bose. Again the bose marketing is awesome. Unfortunately most bose people that I know just cannot understand what the have bought into. We have the 35 series all around rf, rs, rc, and an rsw-15. My uncle who owns bose (think he got them for free so it may be understandable) and a velodyne cht-10 was over listening to my system. I turned it up, not super loud because I'm not sure how much my reciever can push (pioneer vsx-d811s). First thing he said was his went louder, then he said his bass hit harder. At that point I realized arguing was futile, he was set that his bose was better... i tried to show him the light, but he enjoy's the closet. My mother's friend is the same way (although she has never been over).... "oh our bose get so loud in our house, we are going to get them put in as a whole house system" I wanna cry when I hear people talk like that. I don't claim to be an audiophile, nor do I claim to hear exceptionally well. I can however tell when something doesn't sound "right" and I have yet to hear anything by bose that sounds "right"
  3. I sit about 6' from mains (RF-35's). I have a small living room and the couch is almost at the back wall, so i can't get much further away.
  4. dkp Where is the local dealer with the k-horns in mich? My zip is 48192 (mich). I'd be interested in at least giving them a look. Never heard K-horns, and hear about them all over the place on this site. You can e-mail me at divin11112000@hotmail.com chris
  5. mmiles I understand that gf's are quite a bit different than wives, however the gf is now a fiancee now and still doesn't have a problem. Although she grew up with her dad who's front speakers are B&W 802's. She appreciates the sound, was just worried about size. I recommend a little give and take to try to keep your sub unless your dead set against keeping it. I'm sure that the wife has to be wanting something... hell buy her a piece of jewelery, she should go for keeping it then. If not tell her you're goign to take the ring, bracelet, necklace, earings (whatever jewelry you bough her) back to the store, they are just too big for her frame, and they don't fit. Bet she'll be wanting to keep the jewelry and then you get to keep the sub. just a thought chris
  6. I ordered an RSW-12, but since the place was having issues getting me one they gave me an RSW-15 instead, and my GF was complaining about the size (small living.... HT room). I told her too bad, and once we got it all hooked up, she hasn't complained about the size of it. Looks like a coffee table in the corner. So just tell the wife, hey it could have been bigger, OR bring home a larger sub and tell her these are her 2 choices and see which she prefers. Chris
  7. I have mine tilted downward (horizontal mount). I used the little rubber feet supplied with the surrounds, and used the keyhole to mount them. I then just left the screw out a little further and this tilted the top of the speaker down a little ways, not sure how far it's actually titled down (degree wise) but I thought it made quite a bit of difference. Vertical mounting looks very interesting, unfortunately I don't think I can turn mine because they are close to the ceiling. The RH rear is mounted above my door.
  8. I have the same issue although I've read a few things about this issue. Since the RF-35's are rated at 98dB@2.83 volts/1 meter. (They are at 98 decibles with about 1watt of power at 1 meter away from the speaker). Since power doubles for every 3dB change is spl, to get to 101dB you will need 2watts. What I would suggest, sit in your listening position and turn the volume to the desired setting (use the test tones or a disc for calibrating). Now move your SPL meter about 1meter away from your speakers and figure out what dB they are playing at. From here you can calculate how many watts your speakers are actually using when you listen to it that loud. My guess is unless you have a HUGE room and your going to rediculous volumes your not using too many watts. Say your dB 1meter away from the speaker with the volume at your desired listening position is 110 you will have needed to double your watts 4 times. So at 1 watt your 98dB, 101dB your 1+1=2, at 104dB your 2+2=4, at 107dB your 4+4=8, at 110dB your 8+8=16. So if your listening position sounds loud enough and your testing the SPL at 1meter away and it reads 110dB your actually only using 16watts of power to push your speaker. That would mean you have 49watts of head room. I am using a pioneer vsx d811s that claims 100watts per channel (although it doesn't say all driven). I have been concerned about power also, but after I do this "test" I will find out for sure if I should be concerned. Now I may be off base, and if I am hopefully someone will correct me. I am fairly new to this and hopefully have understood everything correctly.
  9. I've been looking around for a multichannel amp. The amps i've been looking at are rotel 1075 (5 channel 120watts) ATI AT1505 (5 channel 150watts) Sunfire cinema grand (5channel 200watts) I'm using Klipsch rf35 series speakers and an rsw15 sub. I am using a pioneer vsx-d811s and will use that as a preamp until i can save up enough money for a preamp. I am looking for a little more bass out of my front speakers, they don't seem to extend down to their full range. I realize with an rsw15 I don't really need a whole lot from my fronts, but it doesn't seem like they are working enough. I'm hoping not to spend over 2k on an amp. I've been trying to stay close to 1k if at all possible to get a good amp for that price. A 5channel or 7channel is what i'm looking for, but i think because of price a 5channel now and a 2channel later down the road is my best bet. I'm 60%ht 40%music Does anyone have any other amps i should consider? thanks in advance Chris
  10. bytor, Thanks. The 15 does pound in the room and I've actually only got it up about half way. As far as going for quality audio before video, I got the fronts and the center because i had a KLH center and older pioneers that sounded TERRIBLE together. Once I had the fronts with polk surrounds and a yamaha sub, I just couldn't deal. I decided that the TV would HAVE to wait till I was able to finish the speakers. Currently my reciever is a poineer vsx d811s, which isn't the best out there, but i'm probably going to leave that for some time and go for the TV next. The reciever does what I want it to do and has all the features, I question the power but everything i've seen says i should be ok. The plan is new TV in a couple of months, and a power amp next year. I attached a pic of the surrounds, my Girlfriend bought them for me for christmas. I think i have the best girlfriend.... she supports my obsession (at least to an extent).
  11. I wouldn't call this a home theater, but it serves it's purpose. In a 15 x 15 room I think that this is plenty (minus the tv). The sound definately blows you away sitting that close to RF-35's & RSW-15 (i'm sitting on the couch). The surrounds that you cant see are a pair of RS-35's. I have the capability for 7.1, but unfortunately I do not have the funds or the room for an additional set of speakers. What this has tought me is that when looking at my next house I'll be planning a HT room, so a place with sufficient space for my speakers. After that then i guess i'll check out number of bedrooms & sizes.
  12. Thanks, I have it hooked up the way that I want then. I have the digital out from the DVD player running into the digital in on the reciever. So my reciever is the one actually decoding the DTS. Thanks for all the input
  13. Thank you for your help. I think that I will be getting an amp, but from the looks of it I can wait a little bit before I get one. Also thanks for the info on the crown amps, I will look into it.
  14. This may be a stupid question, but i'll never know the answer unless I ask. If my DVD player decodes DTS and my reciever decodes DTS. How to I bypass the DTS in the DVD player and decode with the reciever? I have gotten movies with DTS to play by switching some things in the menu of the DVD player, and send the signal with a digital out from the DVD player. I just think the reciever has better DAC's then the DVD player. Thanks
  15. I have posted before asking about 200 x 5 sunfire vs 120 x 5 rotel for amps. However I discovered a little bit more information and was wondering if I should even bother with getting an amp right now. Reciever: Pioneer vsx-d811s Front: Rf-35's Center: Rc-35 Surround: Rs-35's Sub: RSW-15 Some suggested saving the $ and buy Rf-7's instead. I'm very happy with the 35's and probably won't upgrade for quite some time. I know why have a good amp, and the klipsch speakers all driven by that reciever. When I bought the reciever I didn't know much about what i wanted, and was "fooled" by the 100 x 7 that the reciever claimed to do. SO I thought hey 7.1 is better than 5.1 right? Now that i've learned a little i realize that most movies aren't in 7.1. That aside i don't know if i have enough power for the speakers or if i'm ok. Eventually i plan on getting an new reciever and i thought if i get a decent/good amp now then i will never have to worry about power. I set up my system as is using an SPL meter and the test tones that the reciever put out to calibrate the speakers. I have them set at 80 or 90 dB when my volume is -30. Now most of the time I listen to surround at a -40 and music between -40 and -50. Music is ALWAYS louder than DVD soundtracks (not sure if thats normal, but thats what happens at least at my house) Based on doubling watts to get 3dB's of change. I need to see how many times 1 can be doubled in 70 (assuming the reciever doesn't actually push 100 x 5) watts... 1,2,4,8,16,32,64 comes to roughly 7 times. 3 X 7 = 21. 98dB + 21 dB = 119 dB. Now I never listen above 90dB so the reciever should have enough power without clipping because i really never use any more than about 1watt since i'm calibrated to 90dB with SPL. Am I TOTALLY off base and that extremely clueless? or do i have no real worry about clipping because I can't stay in the room if I try to go past -30 on my reciever. To prevent clipping was my first reason to get an amp. After i heard a set with a smaller speakers with smaller woofers using a sunfire amp, the speakers had a more aggressive/tighter/fuller bass then my speakers. I was told an amp will improve the bass.
  16. We use a baby gate to keep our dog in the kitchen during the day while we are at work. However at night she goes into a crate (not sure why we don't do one or the other but guess we felt bad about leaving her in the crate for 8 hrs during the day then 8hrs during the night. Anyhow, we tell her go to bed and right into the crate she goes, infact when she feels we're up too late she starts going in there and looking at us like hey get to bed. We got her to like the crate by giving her a treat when she went in there when instructed. Now she likes it and doesn't get a treat all the time only on occasion. As far as cables my dog is a cocker spaniel, and she sniffed the power cords and speaker wires once. I told her no and to leave it, and she has never gone by them again, when i got my RSW15 she sniffed that then walked away. She knows her stuff and doesn't touch mine, not even if her toy ends up between the speaker and the sub. After a while they know who's boss and have no problems listening.
  17. From my understanding based on the diagrams provided, I could run 2 4ohm speakers in series thus making them 8ohms and then push them from an off the shelf reciever as opposed to having to get an amp???? I understand ohms law, just seems for some reason this would not be a good way to create a higher ohm speaker from a lower ohm. Would this be a decent temporary solution that I could use to run 4 RF-7's until I get an amp that could push 4ohms? Just a curiosity I don't have 4 RF-7's just curious if someone were to read this post and try this if anything bad would happen
  18. I do eventually plan on upgrading the reciever, however I figure the amp would be a more important component to add before getting a new reciever. I guess I'm looking for the power first, then I can worry about what type of preamp to buy while I can still listen do music/HT. If I bought the preamp first it would just sit till I could afford an amp. Thanks for all the input I will put those brands on my to research and demo list.
  19. I have been looking to add a bit more power to my current HT setup. I have RF-35's all the way around and will soon have my RSW-15, but currently using a demo of the rsw-12 till the 15 comes in. I have a pioneer vsx-d811s and I am thinking that I will use this as a preamp since it has the preout connections. My question is what amps should I be looking at? I have found a sunfire amp 200wpc 5channel for a pretty good price. Should I consider Aragon or another brand to go with my setup? I don't know much about amps and am looking for any suggestions on the way I should go. I have heard that high current is best for woofers, while high voltage is better for tweeters. The sunfire has dual outs for fronts and center so I can bi-amp the front channels with current to the woofer and volts to the tweeter. Is this something I should even worry about?
  20. Thanks for the info, I was reading the same issues however wasn't sure if the parts issue was carring over to the rsw-15. I didn't want to bother Amy with an e-mail if this is an issue everyone is experiencing. I also don't want the dealer to get yelled at unless they are jerking me around. The first 2x at the dealer we were treated real well, got the products pretty quickly (minus the extra week on the surrounds).
  21. I think that I'm in a similar boat your in. I've been considering a NAD773, Marantz 7500, or Rotel 1056. Unfortunately the dealer that sells my Klipsch speakers carries only Rotel, and the one that carries NAD is about 2hr drive and I've only been there once. Not sure how they will feel about me taking a marantz and Nad for a test drive espically since I don't go there often and probably would only be buying the one piece from them.
  22. I was wondering if anyone has had issues with getting subs from Klipsch. I ordered an rsw12 dec 27, about a week later the dealer called me and said can't get it but that they can give me the RSW-15 instead. I said sure, unfortunately I still don't have it. They claim that they were having some issues getting things in, then it allegedly came in and the shipping box had a hole in it, so they returned it. However that was 2.5weeks ago. Was wondering if i'm getting jerked around or if anyone else is having troubles getting subs in. thanks
  23. I was looking for brackets also. The place I got my speakers from their guy who installs the systems told me that I didn't need them, to use the keyhole. I wanted to angle them downward a bit, and he said due to the WDST that I didn't really need to. All in all I took his advice (although i had to use drywall screws **get the metal ones, mine are rated for 50lbs each**) I screwed the drywall screw all the way in, but I didn't screw in the mounting screw all the way, this causes my speakers to tilt downward a little bit. However if your really sold on getting mounts I heard omnimount is the best way to go. -chris
  24. That is why I hadn't hesitated when he offered the rsw-15. They said that there was some issues with the 12, then I saw the post here and started to wonder. Now the only unfortunate thing is that I'm still waiting for the 15 to get in. I ordered the 12 on the 28th of dec. A week later they called about replacing it with the rsw15. So hopefully i'll get it by this weekend. I can't wait to rattle the pictures off the walls. As a side note i'm replacing an 8" 150watt yamaha sub, which was a temp fix a few months ago since i didn't have a sub. Hopefully the 15 will match well with the RF-35's, RC-35 and RS-35's. I see most people who have the 15 usually have the RF-7's. chris
  25. Carl, I did order it from an authorized dealer in my area, and yes they are giving me the 15 for the price i paid for the 12. I was just wondering if the issue from the 12 has carried over to the rsw15. I'd hate to just have them pasifying me with a larger sub knowing that there is an issue with it.
