  1. There is a lot of good information here. WAV files it is then, forget the MP3's. I now understand. The parts list was especially helpful. Thanks everyone.

If so, I am told that this problem was unique to the Legends. For that matter, I've only ever heard of it happening on the KLF-20's & KLF-30's. Not sure about the 10's or the C7. I still can't believe how badly UPS destroyed those speakers!

Michael ---------------- Well, tech support encouraged me to smear it in all the joints and not to force apart the box. I didn't listen and I went ahead and "encouraged" the fronts off very carefully. The fronts were extremely loose - if you tapped on them with your knuckle, you could hear them rattle. My back pannels were still fairly secure, so I ended up smearing those joints from inside the box. I've been wanting to inspect the boxes again now that they've been in use for a while. I figure that I can pass an incense stick along the seems during a good bass track and look for "puffing" of the smoke (to indicate spots where the box is breathing). Obviously, I noticed a tightening of the bass after I fixed the joints...

My thinking is that if I don't care enough about 'em to go fetch 'em, I don't deserve 'em! (of course my time is worth nothing) Michael ---------------- For future reference, these particular speakers often do not move well at all! As many of you know, the glue on these speakers didn't bond well to the front and back boards. The result was often that the fronts/backs literally fall out (just like the pics). Obviously, UPS killed these speakers though. How sad. Sorry for your loss. I picked mine up locally and took great pains to ensure gentle handling. Even so, the glue loosened up on mine. Upon repair, I found the front boards to be 80% loose . Easy fix though. Well worth the effort to pick these babies up. A few $$ for liquid nails, and all was better.
  5. Thanks & I would appreciate those model numbers. What about interfacing with the computer? Are people using wireless keyboards & mice, or are people using remotes, etc...?
  6. No, but when I moved my monitor here at work I had to unplug it. In that process, the monitor reverted back to the factor settings for contrast/brightness. Any chance your monitor changed settings when you changed power cables? Just a thought...
  7. I'm looking for ideas on a way to incorporate a PC into my home theater. I have many CD's that I would like to convert to MP3's. Ultimately, I want flexibility to setup groups and favoriate playlists from my full collection - similar to how any CD jukebox would work. So, for now, the sole purpose is music warehousing with excellent playback options. Eventually, I would probably consider internet, but that is not in the scope right now. What do I need in terms of hardware & software to get started? How fast of a processor do I REALLY need. What sound card...? Can you get them with optical outs? What software would one use for the MP3 warehousing? I found remote controls for PC's that have options to "correct" the video for better resolution (in the included software). Are any other interfaces needed? What video card makes sense for future internet use... (S-Video or composit output would be nice)... Thanks. I'm sure many people have done this. Any advice would be appreciated.
  8. That bass tube is rather large (maybe 8' to 10' long?). It should come as no shock that they couple this up with some smaller Bose Satelite speakers. It sounds like a Bose system made for a bigger room.
  9. ---------------- You are falling into the classic trap of speaker purchasing - starting to base your purchase solely on others' opinions about which should work or sound best, etc. ---------------- How true. Decide for yourself. I prefered the Legends after listening to both side-by-side. A good friend went the exact opposite direction and went for the References. We're both very happy. It's all up to you. P.S. Those were some great descriptions of the differences posted above...
  10. Hope this works - probably sized wrong... Pointe du Hac, France. Taken one morning while visiting Normandy beaches (d-day) after a business trip... Have you thanked a Vet. lately?
  11. Remeber the days before subs? I used to have two monsterous "frat house" style speakers with 15" woofers. When setup properly you could feel your pant legs vibrate and your chest pounding with the beat. I have since then experienced few systems with that much bass (edit: in 2 channel setups...). Speakers are basically air movers. I have since owned bookshelf speakers with longer excursion woofers capable of decent bass - but nothing that is chest pounding. However, they had their place and I like them. Now, add a subwoofer and decent bass managmeent, you have (essentially) a three way speaker. The sub does the bass and frees up your bookshelf speakers to handle the mid-bass, mids, and highs. Afterall, the bass is what robs much of your power... With the newer technology, you may be HAPPIER with smaller mains. But to Dodger's point, listen to them and make up your own mind. Your room, listening levels, format choice, music/movie mix will each uniquely impact your choice.
  12. Yeah, and check out the guitarist's hair in the "Top Gun Anthem" Video on the first disk... Talk about "hair" bands - they couldn't do a close up without a wide angle lens - the hair would be out of frame! This version of the movie is a drastic improvement.
  13. I think I need to make another trip to the movie store... lots of good ideas here... I'll add another movie to my list - the opening to "Ice Age". The cracking glacier going right around me was my first experience with Klipsch's & surround sound. That experience prompted a good friend to go with a Klipsch system (can we get commissions for this stuff?).
  14. What movie and scene is everyone using to really showcase your home theaters? For my KLF20's/C7/KLF10's I usually grab: Top Gun (6.1 version - opening sequence on through the bar scene) U571 (depth charge scenes) Gladiator (opening sequence through Maximum's "execution")
  15. My other neighbor has a Chiwawa (sp?). Annoying little dog. It used to bug one of the neighbors German Shepard constantly. Finally, one day the German Shepard had enough. When the Chiwawa came to the end of the driveway, and started into a yapping fit targeted at the German Shepard... yup, you guessed it... It was an ugly site... The Shepard lifted its leg and hosed down the little dog... LMAO! The moral of this story is what you may ask... The little Chiwawa never bothered the Shepard again and the two owners (who were watching) had a great laugh. So, I took a lesson from this. The neighbors pitbull will get a peperspray bath if he takes after us again.

I don't want to hear it. Nor do I want to hear about how other dogs bite. ---------------- Getting back to mOOn's point, I disagree, sort of... It may not be the owner's fault, but it is the owner's responsibility. My neighbors's pitbull took off after my wife (pregnant at the time) and me one night a year ago. Teeth shwoing, spit flying, hair rasied... The dog (it used to be a cute puppy) was not chained or fenced. Had the dog started biting, I shudder to consider the consequence. Taking on ownership of one of these animals - considering their historical disposition towards agressiveness - must come with some acountability. Now my wife freaks out when the neighbors dog is out (rightfully so)- what am I supposed to do when my kids want to run around in the yard??? This is one of several reasons that I am considering moving! Yes, my desire to have "free-range" Klipsch's is on that list somewhere, too. Interesting post mOOn.
  17. Shoot, I missed the cutoff! And I just had a vision... Party on Wayne! Party on Garth! (at this point you would start to headbang...) I see a little silhouetto of a man, Scaramouche, scaramouche will you do the fandango- Thunderbolt and lightning-very very frightening me- Galileo, galileo, Galileo galileo Galileo figaro-magnifico- But Im just a poor boy and nobody loves me- Hes just a poor boy from a poor family- Spare him his life from this monstrosity- Easy come easy go-,will you let me go- Bismillah! no-,we will not let you go-let him go- Bismillah! we will not let you go-let him go Bismillah! we will not let you go-let me go Will not let you go-let me go Will not let you go let me go No,no,no,no,no,no,no- Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go- Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me,for me,for me-
  18. ---------------- On 4/30/2005 12:51:15 PM vman71 wrote: I'd like to find a pair of matching surrounds for my KLF20's and KLF-C7. .... ---------------- IMHO, don't underestimate having timbre matched speakers! I'm sure you're system would sound really good with many of the speakers mentioned. However, from my experience, you'll eventually start to notice the bright or dull spots in the sound stage. I see S6's on eBay every now and then. They are close in price to the 20's... (for good reason, too - they are worth it!). The 10's go for a lot less. If you are willing to shell out the $$ for the S6's, and you have some space in the back of your room, I would step up to the 20's. In regards to the 10's or 20's vs. the S6's (in regards to performance), I use both... I have a pair of 10's and S6's on a speaker switch so I can switch between them as surrounds. I like each for different reasons. My surrounds & seating are all tight against the back of my listening area. The S6's do a great job of filling the entire room with surround sounds. The 10's work great for more localized sound effects (better for newer movies). For example: Playing Dianna Krall on the S6's, I feel like I'm in the middle of the audience when I experience the applause. The 10's make me feel like I'm sitting on the edge of the stage Either way, you can't go wrong - as long as you keep your timbre matched!
  19. They work well! I recommend the 20's or 30's up front over the 10's due to their smoother sound (3 way vs. 2 way design). I've done it both ways... The Legend's weakness is the mid-bass. I use (gasp) an equalizer to bump up everything below 500 Hz. The 10's (IMHO) provide a little better bass than the 20's, and they work very well as rears ~ albeight they are a little low and tuff to hang from the ceiling. I run 20's as my mains with a KLF-C7 in the front. I have KLF-10's in the rear. The KSP-S6's are also timbre matched and also work well for a diffused sound fields if you enjoy that sort of thing (I have a pair that I use sometimes in place of the 10's). I would recommend investing in a good, high-current, receiver / amp with this line of speakers. IMHO, I would feel good at about the $700 mark for the 20's. $400 for the 10's. No clue on the 30's. $350 for the C7. **EDIT: Oh yeah, the 10's, 20's, & 30's are not video shielded if that matters to you**
  20. ---------------- On 5/3/2005 7:30:25 AM JoeP wrote: My sub woofer has an on, off, and auto switch. Once I plug in the sub woofer cable, and switch it to auto, the humming starts. It is a directional cable and the signal is going to the sub woofer. Any ideas? Thank you, Joe P ---------------- I had the same problem with my sub. For me, it was the AC interference as decribed above. I bought a decent sub cable (ie. very well shielded) which improved the problem. In my case, I couldn't re-route my wiring. Somewhat Off Topic - I eventurally made my own sub cable when I needed a longer cable. I used shielded microphone wire from PartsExpress. Problem solved at a much lower cost. No perceivable difference with a decent sub.

Do you guys have any horror stories about crabby neighbors in apartments mixed with Klipsch speakers?? ---------------- Apartments - very funny! I've had the people in the House next door complaining that they couldn't hear their TV over my KLF-10's! That was before I upgraded to my 20's!
  22. Am I the only person to ever see a cat go after speaker wires? For that matter, any wire at all? We had to run all of my father's spekaer wires in that plastic flex lume stuff to keep his cat from chewing on them. Our cat loves phone chords (easy solution - buy chordless phone). In case you are wondering, yes, we are a multi-generational Klipsch family...
  23. My Yamaha's have never run hot - even after serious use. Maybe warm, but never hot. Do you have enough air flow (open space) around your reciever? My Yamaha did shut down once - immeadiately following a short where the rear surround wire was pulled loose and shorted against itself. No heat though. You're not running two pairs of speakers on your AB jacks simultaneously, are you?
  24. Oh yeah, this is highschool, so you have to show your work From the 32" hypotenuse of the 4:3 ratio TV (a 3,4,5 triangle) the width and height are 25.6" x 19.2" respectively. Total area is 491.52 sq.". The 16:9 ratio TV has a width & height of 27.89" x 15.69" resulting in an area of 437.59 sq.". The length and width were found by solving this equation for x, and the multiplying x by 16 (width) and x by 9 (height): 32^2=(16x)^2+(9x)^2 --- x = 1.743... Limiting the 4:3 ratio TV to a 16:9 viewing area means the width is still 25.6, but the height becomes 25.6/16*9 = 14.4". This new area is 25.6" x 14.4" (368.64 sq.") Thus, 15.7% (actually 15.8, my bad) is (437.59-368.64)/437.59 Thus, 12.3% is (491.52-368.64)/437.59 Does that answer the original question?
