  1. Thanks for the info Dr. I have been leaning in the reciever direction... mostly because I had thought quality separates to expensive and, well, requiring of a bit to much space for the tv/equipment stand that I have. Dr Who, Jay, et. al, the main reason I'm even considering it is because my current sony, a couple year old strde-995. I bought it new as a replacement after lightning took out a bunch of gear at our house back in '04. It is in very nice shape, no scratches, dings or dents. I still have the original box, paperwork and remote control. It functions perfectly and I have never had any trouble with it.... UNTIL my wife and duagther are out of the house and I find myself wanting to do some serious listing that includes a bit more volume then their presence allows (system is in living room of small house) Then I'm struck with the fact that it is pretty weak on anything other then straight two channel listening, and even then I'm having to crank it up to far to get much out of it... when I toogle between 2 ch and multi channel, the volume is reduced significantly, maybe as much as half (kind of pittiful, I know) While sony rates it at 110wpc x 7 from 20Hz-20k Hz, I guessing that it MIGHT deliver about 70wpc x 2 and drop to about 30wpc or so when driving all seven anyway, it really takes the fun out of watching a concert dvd when I have no ablity to approach live levels even briefly and I was recently offered a sweet deal on what was Pioneer's non 'Elite' top shelf reciever, a VSX-1015 for $300, but I just don't want to drop a single dime if the performance isn't going to be noticably better, along with the ability to really crank it up when needed, lol What do y'all think ?
  2. with all this new found 'knowledge' I am left wondering where does all this leave a silly sob like me when shopping for an 'affordable' reciever... by affordable, I'm talking about going as far below a 'street' price of $1k as anyone dare go while still being able to obtain a good amount of reliability, features, etc. btw, how do I compare, say HK's 'High-Current' watts vs., Yamaha's 'High-Current' watts vs. , etc., etc. etc. ?
  3. btw, if it is the componant cable, and it doesn't seem to be to tight, some form of 'strain relief' might still be a good idea
  4. I have a several live shows, 3 doors down & Jetro Tull for example, that I recorded off of INHD-2 to my Comcast supplied DVR... The space on that Comcast DVR is rapidly filling up but there are some shows that I just don't want to lose. stupid questions here... If I were to purchase a unit such as the Pioneer 640, could I transfer those 'keeper' HD shows on to it's hard drive? Can these shows somehow be 'down-converted' so as to be recorded for perm storage on a regular dvd? btw, Steve, I just noticed that you ski... do you have a fav 'local' hill?
  5. it is my understanding that Mr. Young ALSO included ALL of his own recordings in that pile of poo....
  6. kind of makes a poor sucker like me say, "wtf, over! I guess when one of these guys die I might finally be able to purchase an affordable pair of Kilpsch speakers" []
  7. Since I basically quit going to the theaters... ALL theaters in the Richmond area are basically crap with the worst being filthy--- filthy seats, flithy & sticky floors, screens splattered with what I guess to be soda and HORRIBLE sound systems... the 'best' theaters in the area are only somewhat less filthy, because they are newer but I have still not been impressed with the sound reproduction. add to that the scheduling hassles, rude folks talking over the movie, taking cell phone calls while choking down the fried chicken they smuggled in, chitty parking lots, overpriced everything, etc., etc., etc. and I generally have no problem waiting for a flick to either come out on dvd or be on the "On-Demand" menu from comcast... what a shame
  8. While I know full well that my room issues will not be fixed with dsp, I also know that my wife has a large amount of control over any changes in placement, not to mention 'room-treatments' that could also be used to address those room issues... With that in mind I'd very much like to Thank each and everyone involved in the design, engineering, construction, marketing and distribution of the new RT-12d with the purchase of one... I just need to come up with the cash
  9. for me it was love at first site... the only thing that has been holding me back is the lack of cash... if it doesn't workout for you, please drop me a line
  10. First thing you need to check is your cables... my neighbor was having a very similar problem and I tracked it to his use of to short a cable from his comcast cable box to his set... connection was 'strained' to say the least rather then getting a new $50+ cable, we went to circuit city and bought a center ch/cable box shelf and relocated the cable box on top of the set
  11. "...Now he ALSO wants me to help in his house... His friend is pushing bose and I just said in his ear that I thought they were very overpriced. He agreed and knowing how cheap he is..." well, I'm also cheap and think I'd be quite happy with a: Denon 3806 Denon DVD 1930CI Universal dvd player Klipsch RF-62 or RF-63 system
  12. I had to pass because as it turns out, the remote was missing and when I added in what remotes.com wanted for a replacement, it just wasn't that great a deal.
  13. hmmm, sounds promising. I was given a price of $300 If I pick it up, it would be for my main system with RB-35s I don't really need to run HDMI or an iPod but was wondering how much improvement I can expect over the sony I now have. The unit is an 'open-box' demo at a small shop that is in excellent condition with full warrenty. It does not appear to have ever even been plugged in, let alone used.
  14. I have been offered a THX Select 2 VSX-1015TX-K for what appears to be a real good deal. What are y'all thoughts on this reciever? http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069809_209686388_tab=B,00.html?compName=PNA_V3_ProductDetailsComponent
  15. if you order HD cable service they will/should provide you with the cables, my service did
  16. Yes, I did, but thanks anyway, posters. The KW/KA just fell into my lap at the right time. It was too good of a price and within pick up distance, so I could not pass it up, even though it was more $ than I initially considered. Hopefully this thread will still be informative for other forum users. I think going from your first "entry level" $400-600 sub to something about twice as much is probably a common step for many. So..... What are you going to do with your lil ole Klipsch RW-12 ?????? I'm thinking that it would do a great job in my little listening room [] If you still have it and would like mto see it go to a good home let me know what it will take.
  17. sure, it will 'work' but get the RC-62 and you'll have no regrets... I'm wishing that I'd have gotten a better center channel speaker even though at the time I bought, the larger speaker wouldn't fit in the stand I then had
  18. I have never seen the show...
  19. Color me Green with envy! Thanks for the great read too.
  20. I wouldn't do it... 1. as already mentioned, heat is the enemy of electronics, if the fire place gets used much while viewing the TV, the life of the set will be effected 2. dang thing will be WAY to high for good viewing while seated...
