  1. I've got my eye on two on epay. Please don't bid against me so I can get one! I want a 930 but they go pretty high. I've got a kitchen pass for $70 or 80. Might be able to squeeze a couple more don't know so I need to get lucky. Hopefully a 730 will find it's way to me. btw I am idustrialsupplies on ebay (no "n") but you won't see me till 10 seconds prior to close. OR maybe one of the brothers here has one he wants to bless me with, you never know...... TIA
  2. Just for kicks I asked what his BIN price was. He says: "Hello there, The buy it now price for the item is $1000 , tell me if you want to make a deal. Thank you!" If you didn't think it was a scam you should have no doubt now.

Yup. We're all entitled to an opinion. This one got my "Lamest Movie of the Decade" award. My wife made me sit through it. I love that woman so it was no big deal but c'mon, Will Farrell is a jerk (IMO of course).
  4. Hey, here's a site that has a manual and calibration page FREE. That's right. http://bama.sbc.edu/hickok.htm
  5. Yeah...kits for grunts. I like that. I tried a fairly complicated high powered amp without a lot of experience. I must've smoked the transistors with too much heat. It never worked. I'm not good enough to test the signal path to see what's wrong. I thought about a ground up rebuild of it but I'd have to rebuy the board(s) and components. Don't know that I'd have the patience to do it all over again. It actually was looking pretty cool. I have a huge torroidal power supply - something like 70 volts DC to the amp. It was supposed to be 250W. I had a cool heatsink that stuck through the top of the case. It was all set with switches and connectors but alas, it didn't work out. A tube project would be cool though. Even if it was point to point. No transistors to fry. I rebuilt my FIsher and an old HH Scott mono tuner. I have the equipment to revive/restore vintage stuff if it isn't too far gone. Finding vintage stuff is a challenge though. Thought about parting out the amp project on ebay to financ a vintage amp. oh well.....thinking out loud again....
  6. Wow, Johnstown. That's a little one horse town just down the road from me! What the heck are these giants doing there?? Man I wish I had a barn.......
  7. When you hit Ctrl/Alt/Del do you get the task manager? Go to processes and click CPU so it sorts on CPU usage and see who the big hitter is. That should give you a clue as to what process is having trouble starting up. Might also try to use a restore point to see if you can restore it to a usable point. Maybe you loaded some software or a program update? That's a start without knowing more...
  8. WELL?!? Did you get them? Are they awesome or what? Update!!!
  9. So, to mildy hijack this thread: Is there no crossover upgrade for newer Cornwall II's? Is the best performance to be had by putting in new caps of the old values? *deja vu* I feel like I asked this before......
  10. Excellent news. I haven't looked at mine in quite some time. I know it was calibrated several years ago. It's good to know it's not that difficult to do.
  11. Nto to quibble but based on previous threads from meagain and Jeff, the difference may not be as dramatic as touted on this forum. Maybe subtle would be more correct. Or dramatic to some may be subtle to others. I don't know. Nonetheless I am planning on replacing the caps on my '86 corns sometime soon. But they sound so darn good now I hate to take them down long enough to do the work.
  12. Go to www.tivocommunity.com and look at the directv forum. There are hacks you can do to allow direct video extraction among other things. These boxes run Linux and are extremely hackable (hackable? is that a word?).
  13. I think I would use it as is if it is in working condition. Does it have the manual? I have the same tester. I haven't worried about getting it calibrated. The cost of having this done would likely exceed the cost of the unit itself. Maybe finding a friend that's an electronics buff with nothing to do. Other than that I would for an older TV repair shop with an old tech still running it. Good luck.
  14. Yeah, I forgot about the power supply and ouput transformers. You would have to find a junker I guess and rebuild it. Don't know if you can find replacement trannys for these or not. Yeah I can read a schematic. I've put together a couple small projects. Built me one of those gainclone chip amps too once. He doesn't supply the schematic (why, I don't know). A guy would have to find a copy of the original kit instructions I suppose. Just thinking out loud here. It seemed like a good start to a DIY project. Maybe not though.

Do you just need a manual and a box, components, etc? Is it possible for a regular joe with a soldering iron and time on his hands?
  16. Dean, I don't mean to hijack this thread but what in those networks costs $320? I'm not doubting you or questioning your know-how and experience but I am curious. I mean, wow, hundreds of dollars for caps and inductors? This is a new concept for me and I am trying to get my head around it. I will eventually get some Khorns for my future HT and may be needing something like this in the future. Again, just curious. Please don't take offense.
  17. Man, I like that full range driver setup! Wow! *hijack* How cool. I would love to build that. I have BD Design's twin driver TQWP for Fostex F103's. It sounds good - CLARITY - but lacking in bass. I would like to try another FR project sometime. Not for a while though. I'm too jazzed listening to my Cornwalls. They are the best thing since napkins. *end hijack* Cool port -Mark
  18. Thieve's suck. Big. Next thing as bad as a thief is a liar but a thief tops it by tenfold. I've been ripped a few times but not as big as that. You feel so violated. Duke, I don't know if I knew about that but I am sorry. Freakin' thieves. Just leave our stuff alone. It ain't yours. I hope I don't have my gun handy when one strikes. I'd be in jail.
  19. OK you got me there. I don't have a ton of experience on tubes. I know what I've got and I know it sounds great. I was letting the Harmon Kardon name to the talking for me. Meagain, new tubes and caps isn't much work...
  20. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5850221447&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1 Tubes for less than 2 bills. GO!
  21. I'll be needing more information on that, if you don't mind.
  22. My wife hated it - thought it was stupid. She's not a big S-F fan tho. I loved it. All of it. I especially like the way the alien's death ray vaporized people. Well done.
  23. "If I have a tube pre, can I still use the HK remote for volume? Yes - right? " Prob'ly not. But there are pre's with remotes.
  24. Woo, my heart goes out to your son. I know something of where you are now. My kid's mom died of liver cirrhosis resulting from alcohol abuse at age 42, seven years ago. My life with her was hell, I can relate. Her passing was sad but a blessing also. I was able to raise my children in an environment free of the lies, drugs and alcohol. I could go on but this is your post. I am saddened by the loss your son feels. He will always have a hole in his heart where is mom was. My kids still miss their mom despite the hardships. They always will - but they have fond memories also, as does your son. God bless you and your family. -Mark
