  1. I would have loved to come to this, but I was up in PA that weekend, so thus was never able to make it. Hopefully next year.
  2. I don't know about the S4i but I've had a pair of S4's for nearly a year now that has gotten HEAVY usage at the gym and still sound and function just like the day I first pulled them out of the package. Bummer that you are having issues with the connector, though.
  3. Go figure that is the weekend that I will be in Pennsylvania [:|] If I was going to be around, I would have definitly stopped by for a visit to check this out.
  4. Yup that would indeed work. Of course, you can also try: L RB-51 II TV R RB-51 II RC-10 Center L RS-10 Surround R RS-10 Surround L RB-10 Bookshelf R RB-10 Bookshelf As this is also a perferctly good way to setup a system. It entirely depends on your particluar space and how you want your sound. Some people think putting the RS-style speakers on the side with the direct-radiating ones on the rear is a better solution. That is basically how I have my own rig setup (RS-7s on the side, with a single RC-7 in the rear as I have a 6.2 setup). Anyway, once you have all the pieces in place, it is a matter of experimenting with placement until you find something that you like. Also, try to put the subwoofer into a corner, if at all possible. With that, you should have yourself a fine little system there! [H][8]
  5. I don't think will go wrong with either of those Then, if that is indeed the case and if you want to complete the 7.1 setup, then I would get a pair of the mains. Given what you currently have, I think a pair of the RB-51s would be an excellent match and be a nice upgrade to the sound without being to overpowering and still be relatively inexpensive.
  6. That HGS-10 is a pretty powerful sub. It is "servo controlled", which sounds like what went out. Given the thing is probably some 14 years old now (that review posted in the original post was dated back in 1997), that does not surprise me that they are no longer supported. I guess it could be possible to find a part on something like eBay, but that is hit or miss. As far as finding something a bit more appropriate (short of going second hand, as it seems you already indicated you would just rather buy new), then perhaps something like the SW-450 would be better (at around $450). One nice thing about subs is that you do not have to stick with Klipsch is none of the options appeal to you. Of course, getting a current Velodyne model would work as it is a brand you are already familier with. A lot of folks on here also really like SVS. Actually, that is not a problem as long as you don't constantly crank the volume all the way up all the time. In fact, what is actually more harmful to speakers is too little power. If you crank things up until it distorts, you amplfier is clipping, which means it just does not have enough power to handle what is being asked of it. This distortion is what will really kill speakers, especially the tweeters. Because Klipsch are pretty efficient, they often don't require as much power to get them as loud as other brands. (*cough*bose*cough*). You don't have to get a complete new setup. As I mentioned, the current RB-41 II line seems to be the direct replacement to your RB-10s. This is what I would actually do. If you want to upgrade your speakers, I would upgrade the mains, to say something like the RB-61s or whatever else you desire. Then use your RB-10s as the rear surrounds (the surrounds don't HAVE to be the RS-xx type speakers. In fact there has been some debate on what is actually better for surrounds, with some saying the ideal setup being all identical speakers all the way around). As time and money allows, you could gradually upgrade other parts of the system (such as the center next, then the side surrounds and then the rear surrounds, new receiver, new sub, and so on and so forth....). You could reuse the old speakers in another system or sell them off on Craigslist/eBay/this forum's Garage Sale section/Audiogon/etc. Just please, for the Love of God and everything Green, don't just throw them away! Heck, you may even still be able to sell the dead HGS-10 on Craiglist for a couple hundred. Somebody with the know how may still be able to fix it or use it as spare parts to fix another unit, especially if the amp and the drivers in that thing are still good.
  7. Yup, you just answered your own question. That is indeed a KV-2. Not bad for only $75 bucks, especially it if works (I am assuming it does here).
  8. That is true, that even depending on what applications you have on your cell phone will effect if it transmits or not, such as the google maps and the traffic updates as shown here. Not only that, but often time, some of these apps are always looking for updates as well and notifies you if it finds an update. So the point is that it is very possible that even if put to 'sleep' and put in your pocket, the phone can still be transmitting intermittently. Of course, for the really anal or the tin-foil hat types, it is possible to disable that (such as putting it in 'airplane mode', but then you would not be able to recieve calls if you do that)
  9. Nice rig and setup there! Looks pretty sweet. Those HGS-10 subwoofers were some really nice units in the day. When you said "I took out my father's old Velodyne sub", do you mean that you ended up killing it? Sounds like they no longer support it. Well, that sub was originally a $1,600 unit - pretty high-end as far as HT subs go (although not the uber-ridiculus-high-end like the Krells or Wilson Audios). If you want to stick with Klipsch subs, I am guessing the closes equivalent given the modern (current) line will be SW-311. Of course, there are very good brands out there, plus you may be able to find something nice for second-hand that will be less than paying $1,500 for a new one that matches your original in specs. The older reference (which is what your RB-10 system is) actually matches quite well with the current reference. If you are talking a complete package system, the RB-41 system are the current equivalent to the older RB-10 system. Of course, perhaps take this oppurtunity to upgrade farther up the line, such as the RB-61s or such, if your budget and space allows.
  10. I keep my wallet and cellphone in the same pocket for over two years they still work. But when it's in your pocket it not transmitting, could that make a difference ? I have an android phone which means it always is transmitting. It lasts 2/3 of a day battey wise because it always transmits. These modern smartphones are constantly transmitting intermittently. Everything from checking if you got new mail/SMS to polling the towers for neighbor cells (and determining if it needs to initiate a handoff sequence) to updating the time as well as sending GPS locations. Also, these modern cell phones are transmitting in the FRACTIONS of a a milliwatt (typical signal strength ranges from something like -50 to -80 or so dBm (Decibel/milliwatt). (although the table says -10 to -30 dBm, but actual experience is showing the former) 0 dBm is 1 milliwatt. You are getting far more radiation from the sun than you would get from typical cell phone signals, even if holding the thing up against your head (which is typically around 24 dBm (around 500 milliwatts) This is also which is why I have issues with all these claims of cancer caused by cell phones. Maybe back in the analog days when the things transmitted upwards of 5 watts of power on the 850 MHz band, I can probably see, but even still - but that is a whole 'nother topic that I don't want to get into. I've had cell phones in the same pocket as my wallet and I've never had it nuke any of my credit cards. However, I can see it happening if left on top of microwave and also agree it was probably more to do with the magantetic field from the magnatron vs actual microwave leakage. FYI, for the past nearly 4 years, I've been working in cellphones forensics and tracking (as to exactly what I do is classified, so not even going there), so I do know a thing or two about how cellphones work. [8-|] When it comes down to it, it is amazing that the technology even works as well as it does, esepcially with the modern 4G protocols such as WiMAX and LTE.
  11. Although I've not had a chance to really listen to anything lately, but I did just try to get into the RTM thread, and I am also getting the same error. Looks like something went south there.
  12. How I wish I could go. As it turned out, even if I was able (and had the vacation left), I would not be able to take the time off anyway. Turns out have a major customer demo of this new project that I've been working on for the past year or so and need all day Friday to setup for it. You all have a good time. I sure hope there is one again next year and that I will try to go to it.
  13. Sometimes just grabbing a bag of baby-cut carrots and a tub of ranch veggie dip will do it for me when it comes to snacks. Or getting a nice big cold slab of watermelon out of the fridge, but would rather eat that outside on the deck instead of in front of the TV, though. I've even just gotten a box of triscuits and some cheese spread on occasion and sit back and enjoy.
  14. To answer the original question, I've not tried to disconnect any woofers in my RF-7s, but I did listen to them next to something like the RB-5s. I'll take the full-sized RF-7s, thank-you-very-much! That being said, if think you really liked that kind of sound, than perhaps trying to find a pair of RB-5s or similiar may not be a bad idea. Hell, if you could also find a decent sub to go with them, you may actually get the best of both worlds.
  15. I have both speakers and have done the same thing in the past. I did find that I really liked the RF-7s much better over all. Anyway, I see that you've decided to keep the RF-7s. I honostly don't think you will regret it. Would be sweet if you could use the RF-5s as surrounds (which is what I am currently doing), but sounds like you are pretty tight on space. Anyway, for those that are curious, the RF-7s really are much larger than the RF-5s (boy, that is an old picture! That TV has long been upgraded to a 55-inch high-def set):
  16. That is sweet! I've been enjoying my RF-7s going on something like 9 years now (geez - been that long since I got the things??) I am also using RF-5s for side surrounds (in addition to a couple of RS-7s). For the back surround, I just got a single RC-7 in the rear (in addition to the one up front for the center channel), so I am basically running a 6.1 configuration (actually 6.2, as I got two subs in this rig - a REL Storm III and a Klipsch RW-12d. At least I am in a house, so I can (usually) crank it up, but even then, I still have to be careful as these houses are fairly close together in this neighborhood.
  17. I've listened to them. They can keep them as far as I am concerned. Stick with Klipsch. []
  18. As much as I hate to say this, but at this point, there is just no way that I'll be able to make it this year. Between serious crunch time on a project at work, with no vacation left, and just don't want to deal with the hassle of trying to get to Hope like what happened last year, I've decided to just bag it this year. If it was still in Indy, I may have been able to pull it off. HOPEfully I'll see you guys next year.
  19. Well, I made the nearly 1 1/2 hour trip down there to check this out. Turned out that 'ntcrusher' lives all the way down there in Chesterfield, which is south of Richmond, so a bit farther than I originally anticipated. Anyway, this really is a sweet rig that he's got setup here. Of course, I did bring some of my own material, including some brand-spanking-new stuff, such as Lost In Thought - Opus Arise, as well as some of my standards such as Vox Tempus - In the Eye of Time. I am quite familier with the Vox Tempus and think that is probably one of the best recorded albums in my collection, so I often like to bring it when checking out other systems. Of course, these are Jubilees we are talking about, so yeah, it is going to sound friggan incredible! He has a mix of McIntosh gear and Crown gear to power the Jubs themselves, fronted by an active crossover, which in turn is fronted by an Onkyo reciever being used as a pre/pro. His primariy source is a Sonus setup, fed by a several. So, before listening to anything, we ripped the CD into lossless up to his server and then played it through the Sonus. Other than going through the ripping process, once the music is in, it is pretty cool being able to just go and select the track - kinda like those new touch screen juke boxes you see in bars now-a-days. It actually sounded quite good, although I am still somewhat "old-school" in prefering to just play the CD whenever possible. In addition, Larry also brought several DVDs of various classical performances. We listened to the last two movements of Tchiacovsky's 4th Symphony, as well as Romanian Rhapsody. Also listened to a performance of a requiem in a German cathedral (the exact name escapes me) with choir and orchestra. Quite an incredible performance right there. Was really cool to see and hear it on this rig. Marty was also there and he brought a bunch of CDs as well that we checked out. Not only that 'ntcrusher' treated us to some pizza. In addition, I did end up leaving behind quite a bit of music from several artists that he has never heard of. In fact, when we tried to rip the Lost In Thought album to his server, iTunes did not even recognize it. Part of that is that album is so new that it is not even officially released yet. One advantage of personally knowing the owner of the record label - he does sometimes hook me up with early releases. However, 'ntcrusher' was quite impressed with the Introitus - Elements album. Overall, I was really impressed with those Jubs and how they sounded. They do indeed command quite a presence. As big and intimitading they can look, it is actually pretty surprising how restained they can actually be if controlled with good front-end equipment. Turned out that 'ntcrusher's mother lives just down the road from my place, so I told him that if he wants to listen to a good RF-7 setup, to drop by my place. Granted, they may not be Jubs or even KHorns, but they can still hold thier own as well. That is one thing that I always seem to come away with after checking out some of these rigs is just how impressive that my own rig still sounds, even compared to something like what 'ntcrusher' has here. Thanks for a great time. Hopefully will get a chance to go check it out again.
  20. Glad to! [Edit:] You have a PM with the info. See you there!Larry Sweet! Got it! Thanks. Looking forword to seeing you all there this Sat.
  21. Do you know his address? I need an address to even put in my GPS. Can somebody e-mail/PM me an address where this is?
  22. Directions dude! PM me directions to get to your place! I am still planning on coming, as I do want to check out this new rig of yours.
  23. There are no more decent record stores in my immediate area, so I just ordered a bunch of CDs from a small, independent label - Nightmare Records. Really sucks that there are no record stores here anymore, as I really miss those Saturday afternoon just thumbing through records and seeing if there is anything cool that I think I may like. Was an interesting way to discover some new music at times. I guess that is why I love going through the vendor area at ProgPowerUSA. When it comes to prog/power metal, you could just about find anything there, including some pretty rare items.
  24. Is this still on? Just to let you know that I am indeed still interested in this. I actually got a few tracks that I am really looking forward on trying out on that rig.
  25. How I wish we had a record store that was actually worth a d[8]mn in this area - still lament the loss of Blue Dog Records that used to be downtown. Well, I ended up doing the next best thing and ordered several albums from a small, independent label - Nightmare Records: This is what I ended up ordering: Quantity Name SKU Price Subtotal 1 Twinspirits "Legacy" 6419922002988 $10.19 $10.19 1 Black Majesty "In Your Honor" (Ltd Edition Digi) + 2 Bonus Trks 884860024723 $11.89 $11.89 1 Innerwish "Inner Strength" 693723790220 $9.35 $9.35 1 Lost In Thought "Opus Arise" PRE-ORDER 7320470139462 $11.89 $11.89 1 Enbound "And She Says Gold" PRE-ORDER 7320470139455 $11.89 $11.89 SubTotal : $55.21 Shipping and Handling Fee : $5.20 Tax Total : $0.00 Total: $60.42 EDIT - For some reason the new Mindflow album did not make into that order, so I went and made sure it got ordered as well: Quantity Name SKU Price Subtotal 1 Mindflow "With Bare Hands" Special Edition Digipak (Format: CD; ) 734923006312CD $11.89 $11.89 SubTotal : $11.89 Shipping and Handling Fee : $1.73 Tax Total : $0.00 Total: $13.62
