  1. I just put one of those 10 year 9 volt battery in my smoke detector. I wonder what it will look like in 10 yearrs? I wonder if I'll survive? []
  2. It seems to run hot. I'm comparing it to my Mcintosh MC7270. Tonight I fired up the old Adcom and let it idle, nothing else turned on, no pre-amp, CD player, nothing. After one hour, it was up to 120 deg. F. Sound like a problem to you guys? I bought it drand new about 10 years ago. It has never been messed with. Has a soft turn off thump on on channel. The Mcintosh barely get warm even after hours of use. I guess I'll busting out the watt meter and see what it's pulling at idle. Then, as someone else suggested on another post, the scope. I'll look at the output and see if anything shows.
  3. Your Adcom has something wrong with it. Did someone mess around with the biasing? If you hook it up to a 'scope, do see oscillation? It should not be running hot, especially at idle. BTW, the series 2 on the Adcom has some capacitor upgrades on the power supply. Those will have a very clean sounding bass. They are currently going for about $325-375 on eBay. IMO, an absolute steal. Aw man, now I have that to worry about.[] Just connect the scope up to the speaker outputs and see what she's doing at idle? I have a Fluke Scopemeter and a Leader scope, so I have that covered. My Adcom has always had a very faint turn off thump on one channel. Funny thing, the speaker, a Vandersteen Model 3A, connected to that channel just happened to have failed. The mid woofer died. So, where is a good place to send it. Pretty sure the warranty has expired.[] The cover has never been removed on it.
  4. I have a GFA 555, the thing runs hot! Just leaving it on at idle it gets hot! Just letting you know. Unless mine has something wrong with it. I purchased it new about 11 years ago. My Mcintosh, which has more power, barely gets warm, even while using it.
  5. I run a pair of 1982 Cornwall's, (with all new innards) a HSU sub, Mcintosh MC7270, Adcom GTP450 pre-amp and a Yamaha CD player in my garage. No complaints.
  6. And this, for the slide rule types. http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~boyk/spectra/spectra.htm For some reason, their site is not responding now. I can see it, it just won't work.
  7. Frenquency, in hz, of musical instruments. Missing cymbals and bells. http://www.psbspeakers.com/audio-topics/The-Frequencies-of-Music
  8. http://www.critesspeakers.com Just buy new and improved tweeters from him and be done with it, that's what I did. Keep the old ones for sentimental purposes. Did that too.
  9. Want a Pioneer SA8800 to go with it? I tried to give it away last month. For some reason, that didn't workout. It lights up, but does not work. You can have it for the shipping costs. It weighs 40lbs so you can figure the cost to ship. It is double boxed and ready to go.
  10. I can't even imagine how much racket would come from my Cornwalls if I turned my 200wpc Macintosh up to an indicated 200 watts output! I believe it would be a bit too loud.[]
  11. You might give these guys a call and see if they can help you out. I use a set of Hosa unbalanced XLR to RCA to connect my DAT deck. http://www.sweetwater.com/c861--Unbalanced_Cables__RCA_to_XLR
  12. I'd look into a new pair of crossovers from Bob Crites. That's what I did with my 82's.
  13. I use a HSU sub with my Cornwalls. They're used in a 24x24ft garage.
  14. I got mine for free. And then spent close to $500.00 on new innerds from Bob Crites. [] Did they need need new woofers, tweeters and crossovers? Probably not, but they got them anyway.[Y]
  15. I put these Cornwalls to good use, I don'tbaby them.[Y] Notice the "sound anchors" on top of each one?[]
  16. Nice looking chunks.[Y] I still have a set of Marantz Imperial 6 (I think) speakers I bought new, when I was in highschool.
  17. Doesn't work, but still........... free to a good home. Or any home. I have it sitting here (well, actually it's at work) can't see the logic of tossing it in the trash. It worked up to about a year ago, then stopped. Smelled a little toasty. [:S] Should be easy to repair, if you're handy with the brain. If you want it, just pay the shipping. It's a bit on the heavy side, probably around 35 lbs. I'm going to list it in the garabge sale section too.
  18. "For disco I would recommend a shoulder mount amp." Roller skates too.
  19. You guys would have a stroke if you saw the Cornwalls in my garage. Each one has a "sound anchor" ,consisting of a tool box, sitting on top.[] There is a bench grinder and a drill press located between them. A tire machine next to the right one.
  20. I was already busted by the wife. She saw it sitting on my work bench and asked if it was new. I said it wasn't new, it isn't, it's used. [] But, she was on to me. She then asked if it was new to me, I said "yep", she asked "how much", I said "enough". Although, I was a bit insulted when she called it "a receiver"! And that, was that. [Y]
  21. Well, that and the fact that I fell in lust with one when I first laid eyes on that brand as a teen ager. What is it? A McIntosh MC7270. I could no longer resist those big blue meters. I wanted one as a teenager but couldn't afford one. Now, I can afford one, but just couldn't justify a brand new one. So I picked up a used MC7270 on FleaBay. The thing is almost mint. It also came with a new, never used wood case. Currently, it is being used in my garage system. It replaces a Yamaha M50 power amp. It is fed by a Yamaha CDC 685 CD player through an Adcom GTP450 preamp/tuner driving a pair of 1981 Cornwalls that have Bob Crites crossovers. There is also a Hsu sub over in the corner. The thing has some weight to it, I had to beef up the shelf in the cabinet where it sits. [] The Yamaha M50 seems a bit "brighter", the McIntosh seems to have more bass. More time listening will tell.
  22. My Vandersteen Model3 speakers are falling apart, the cones are seperating from the surrounds. Vandersteen wants $120.00 each to repair the drivers, that's just sending them the loose drivers. I could, and have purchased whole woofers for my Klipsch Cornwalls! I would think I could use some type of contact cement to reattach them, any ideas? Rubber surrounds, some type of plastic cone, it's not paper. Thank you.
  23. Got a new in box Panasonic SV-4100P-H DAT recorder, I have a bunch of DAT tapes and my old deck died. I didn't want to spend a ton of cash, so I went with EBay. No manual of course. But, it is brand new, with rack mounts and remote. Question is, since it is a pro model, how am I going to connect it to my Adcom preamp? It has analog XLR inputs and outputs, digital XLR in and out, coaxial in and out using RCA plugs, and optical in and out. I don't have any of those type connectors on my Adcom GTP500. It looks like the easiest way would be XLR to RCA. Would I need a converter type box, or just the adapter cables. The XLR output level has a -10db and +4db setting. Thanks for any info.
