  1. Jolly, Forgot Martin Barre from Tull. Spent thousands of hours listening to Tull in the 70s and 80s. Do not own much but have 2 good buddies that are nuts about Tull.
  2. I rarely hear of anyone ending the Outlaw 1050 back. For $ 499 you can add a used 2 channel power amp for the mains. HK probably does not get enough notoriety in the market for their build quality. NAD get a bit neglected as well.
  3. Other options NAD T751 or 761 HT receivers I hear are reasonably priced in Canada Outlaw 1050 is still a good deal even in Canadian dollars. A tough competitor to Dennon. HSU VTF2 or Adire Audio Rava or DIY kit from Parts Express sub can be had for $ 400 or $500 USD
  4. The Outlaw stuff is great it keeps other HT electronics companies honest. I got a newbie friend of mine to buy a 1050 and he is amazed at the quality. If they made a progressive scan DVD Video/DVD Audio player I would buy it.
  5. I watch CNN and channel surf in ProLogic. I am a bit of a freak. I would buy a car without a cig lighter or ash try and a TV with no audio in it.
  6. Actually the RB5 is more expensive if you complement the speakers with a high quality stand. I use lead filled Sanus Steel 24 inch stands. Special ordered with the larger top plate(rubber grommets between top plate and RB5); they have cone points to anchor to the floor. The mass of the filled stand ends up between 40-45 pounds. A pretty reasonable anchor to the floor. Thoughts to ponder... 1. Buy the main speaker that sounds the best for music. Sub and center can supplement for best HT sound. 2. minor consideration is the wood finnish(wife factor) 3. Fixed crossovers at 80 or 100 hz in HT receivers or preamps are one of the bigger rip offs in audio today. Large setting with 40, 50, or 60 hz crossover options would add allot of flexibility to experiment. 4. There seems to be a great performance difference between SC1 and RC3. I really like RC3 for mid bass slam. the klf c7 is cool but a monster of a box to find room for. Whether RF3 or RB5 you will have fun.
  7. SEB, Maybe you can grab a used pair of SB3 or 3.1 or if you are really lucky RB5s. We are pulling for you to catch a deal.
  8. UN "Lamp cord is the same as speaker wire?" In a very neophyte sense of the terminology. Going to Radio Shack and getting some 12 gauge speaker wire would be a reasonable expense. If I splice wire around the house for other purposes and short something out...Oh well. We can suffer without a TV or small space heater in the bathroom. I would prefer to be safe and not short out my amp and fry various parts of my HIFI rig. I would be bummed. Good Luck
  9. Sams and Costco run some specials as low as $ 9.88 as I remember.
  10. I used to hang with a guy who had all the Lee R. about 15 years ago. A very impressive player none of the songs really stood out to me. I have been reading allot about this Bill Frissel guy. Anyone able to recommend one of his disks.
  11. What are you using for preamp and power? Is the intended use HT or 2 channel?
  12. It seems like years ago and sometimes yesterday. Very profound photo essay; I will keep it on disk to review with my granchildren 20 and 30 years from now. In past months I have more closely studied the other civilizations around the planet more than I have in many years. Many are not civilized. Withholding food and education as a tool to manipulate the masses is practiced extensively every day around the world. Common people in developing countries cannot grasp the idea of our society; it is too outside their frame of reference. "War Lords" abhor the existence of our constitutionally limited republic; it means their tyrrany will end some day(perhaps only distant generations from now). Terrorists are not citizen soldiers; they have no normal life to go home to like the soldiers from WWII. Terrorism is their life. It has been quiet for a while now but I am still unsettled. Not sure where the world goes from here.
  13. For an entry level system, get a 100 foot spool of 12 gauge from Radio Shack or mail order from Parts Express or MCM Electronics for your speakers. It never hurts to have some left over or leave some slack in case you want to alter your location of speakers. I have used AR and Kimber Toslink digital cables and really do not notice alot of difference. Some people may notice the difference. I prefer the RCA digital connection but that is probably not based in too many facts. The Toslink connection just seems a little flimsy. Make sure to buy a DVD player that has both digital outputs so you can test for yourself. I recommended the new Sony Progressive Scan DVD player 700 model to a friend of mine and he has been very pleased. Seems like a great bargin for $300. Enjoy the journey.
  14. Thanks DEANG I have been infected with the audio bug since I was in junior high. The terminology remains the most cumbersome part of the hobby. Very taxing trying to put what you hear into words. 10 days ago I put the Audio Quest Coral interconnect between my DAC and pre amp. Still not sure how to describe it but it sounds real nice.
  15. Many Geffen label Cds sound like junk. I now avoid them. The early 80s "Aqualung" by Tull was horrid. One of my favorite bands The Eagles are so arrogant. All of their CDs are over compressed. They put out a box set with no new songs or alternate recordings; I will not buy it at retail prices. Their CDs were supposed to be remastered; I have not heard one yet.
  16. Mystian, Just keep hanging around allot of real nice people with an awsome amount of knowledge to keep you from making mistakes. Good Luck
  17. I agree the "all at once" premise would be a bit disatisfying. If possible; get Momma used to the tweaking as a hobby. Here in Michigan there are people with $ 10k -20k invested in their snowmobile habit they only use less than 15 days a year. My RB5 based music and HT rig gets used 35-45 hours per week(probably only 6-8 hours of HT per week). Agreat investment in my perception. I hardly ever sell my used equipment all of the old stuff goes in the kids rooms. They get no TV, Video Games, or telephones in their rooms; BUT they have music. I think it helps with their imagination, school grades and avoidance of bad habits. Happy Klipschin'
  18. For about $ 40 you can get 6 Naxos CDs. Some of the DDD organ music is impressive. Others... Penderecki Vol. 2 Vaughn Williams Sinfonia Antartica Bax Symphony no 5 With Naxos if you do not like it give it to a friend, they are so inexpensive. Anonomous 4 on Harmonia Mundi is a great choral group interpreting very old masses or chant type music.
  19. Manuel, I spend 10-12 days a month in Mexico on business. Where is the klipsch dealer you visit? I would like to stop by a HIFI shop in Mexico. I frequent Puebla, Saltillo, Monterry, Mexico City(north side mostly), and Toluca.
  20. Sal, Where have you been? Can you give me your opinion of the upsampling board on the MSB DAC? As I remeber you have had yours for a while. I put in an Audio Quest Coral interconnect between my Link and the preamp 2 weeks ago with very positive results. I am still waffling about adding the upsampling board.
  21. Finally someone mentioned Stephen Stills! Just saw him last week live do a killer 2-3 minute accoustic solo in the middle of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" he is a little slower than the times I saw him 25 years ago, but still hot. Brian Setzer is interesting. G.E. Smith from the Saturday Night Live band in years past made Hall and Oates allot of Money Michael Hedges AND Who is "Bucket head" this jazz guitarist who disguises himself; he is sharp. I think he is Van Halen or Slash; anybody know? I have a Narada compilation disc that has Slash doing a flamenco guitar tune; pretty cool. Do not forget those old guys Les Paul Chuck Berry Carl Perkins
  22. It is really funny sometimes when people go from RB5 to a more expensive speaker. Most times they keep the same power. Going from a receiver to a high current power amp on my RB5s did amazing things to dynamics. Even at low volumes the transients were more pronunced.
  23. I really like to boldly tout subjective rules of thumb. If a HT receiver weighs less than 30 pounds its power rating is suspect. If the transformer mass is not there you have a difficult time getting clean current. Outlaw 1050 is a conervative rated product.
  24. I used the RC3 with my pair of KSB 3.1s before I upgraded to RB 5s. There is the timbre matching concern but I never thouht it was a problem. RC3 has way more performance than the smaller Klipsch center speakers for just a little more invenstment. Give it a listen, if you get a chance.
  25. I have not had a chance to hear SVS; I am sure they are good but wnated to keep things simple. Adire Audio Rava $399 adireaudio.com 270 watts 12 inch sealed heavy 60 pound cabinet easy sub to use and enjoy the "sealed " sound; kind of like an M&K
