  1. I listen to Msuic in my car, but I do have a Competition Sound System installed in it. I professional competion drivers on the horns almost as good as Altec 288 series. I have 6"mid bass drivers mounted in the firewall and 8" sub woofers in the floor (custom enclosures). I use Clarions top of the line CD player (no internal amp)controlled by a laptop, (all speakers are independently controlled for EQ, time alignment, phase, and crossover points). The amps are hand assembled in Brittian and are the as close to Tube amps in sound as you can get with solid state equipment. My car setup is of course for sound quality, even though I have 15" subs in the rear for spl, but I don't use them when I listen to music. The car has been completly sound proofed as well. This is the only way to get great sound in a car because to the seating arrangements, all the reflective surfaces, etc..., but can be done. Jeff
  2. As all you married guys whos wife now tolerates or enjoys the audio system knows, its compromize which gets you there. Being married 28 years to someone who does not like music (noise) and loves silence, to someone who now comments on how bad other audio systems sound in comparison to ours. She even wants to demo the system to friends relatives, etc.. Yes she started out wanting the BOSE stuff cause it was small and unobtrusive in the room. We now have modified K-horns standing over 6 feet tall for the mains, LaScalas for the rears, 9 cubic foot ceneter channel (altec 605A), and two Klipsch series II, 15 subs. I have had to play music she likes I even go out of my way to buy the best possible recordinsg of music she likes, I make sure I get AC-3 Laser discs or DVD movies like Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, etc... and play them at a significant volume as well. Letting her find music in used cd stores or movies she likes and not saying a word about it, now allows her to full appreciate the audio system, and allows me to also play the music I like at volumes I enjoy. So make the effort to let your significant other buy and play the music they like anytime and take the time to show them how to use the equipment and what or how each peiece of it works together. Jeff
  3. Tom The 288b's are suppose to be 24 ohm, but cheked out at 16.8 ohms. I attempted to keep the Altec and JBLs very close to the impeadance that the ALK's were designed for.
  4. Keep the LAS, sell the RF-7s. I have used the LAS in home theature as well and a quality sub with them is no match for the RF-7s.
  5. I'm using Altec 805 tar filled horns with 288B drivers and ALK crossovers on my K-horns and they work fantastic. I'm also using JBL 2404H baby cheek tweets and love how they sound. K-horns have never sounded better.
  6. I replaced the k-v-55 and t35 on my k-horns. They now have a Altec 8005 Tar filled multi celled hornswith 288B drivers, and jbl 2404 baby cheek tweets for high end and using ALK crossover. A very noticable improvement in midrange. To me I have the best of both worlds now with K-horn Bass, and Altec Midrange.
  7. WOW - what a find. I use a Scott 340B and it is fantastic. Can only imagine how this unit would sound. Someone is getting a fantastic amp. Jeff
  8. For me I solved the 2-channel versus HT problem by having my mains (k-horns) on a speaker selection box. I select to use them in HT connected to the Yamaha VRX-990 or 2-channel with the Scott 340B (tube). The HT sounds great, but cannot compare to the Scott when I'm listening to music. I prefer to listen to 2-channel sound for music, I like my sound stage in front of me.
  9. For car subs, nothing beats Image Dynamics for Sound Quality and they can hit fairly hard too. I have 15's and 8's in my car.
  10. Pair of LaScalas for 395.00 and a pair of Heresys for 150.00 at the same estate sale. My first Klipsch speakers. Wow was I in heaven.
  11. Q-Man, I've talked with Altec and the 288 can go down to 300Hz as long as you are not sending 100 watts of power at 300Hz. The 288s can be used on the Altec 300 cycle horns. I use an EQ and have a slight bump at the 500Hz range which must be to take care of the problem you pointed out. I use a RTA to EQ the room. I try to cut frequncies rather than boost any to fix any room problems. I find the transition from the bass to the midrange pretty seemless.
  12. Clint, The drivers are Altec 288Bs. It takes two people to put the top section on the bass bin section.
  13. Mark, I'm driving them with a Scott 340B (7591s) in stereo with a Sony CD player through a MSB DAC Link II, or a Yamaha VRX990 when doing the HT thing. I have LaScalas for the rear, a Altec 605A for center channel and two Klipsch SW series II subwoofers (15 and 12). Fantastic sound for movies as well.
  14. Here are some more pictures. I do have assembly pictures if anyone wants to see them. Regards, Jeff Weedman
  15. Hi all, Thought I would post some pictures of the Khorns Klewless and my self built over the winter and this spring. We made two pairs of Khorns. Klewless used the traditional Khorn components while I changed the midrange and the tweeter. I used an Altec 805 tar filled multi cell horn for the midrange, and a JBL 2404 for the tweeter. I also used Al's ALK crossover. All I can say is AWSOME when I listen to them. More pictures in next post.
  16. There is one on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1236240101
  17. I replaced the midrange and tweeter on my khorns, with Altec 288 drivers and 805 tar filled horns for the midrange, and JBL 2404Hs for the tweeters. With the ALK crossover I'm in heaven.
