  1. Kain, My understanding is that HDCD (High Definition CD) uses 20-bit encoding/decoding to provide a wider potential dynamic range, as opposed to the standard 16-bit. A player with HDCD capability means that its DAC chips can accept and decode the 20-bit information. To take advantage of this, you have to use the DACs in your player and run analog stereo interconnects to your receiver/processor. If you want to take advantage of the HDCD's full potential, you can't use the digital (coax or optical) outputs unless your receiver/processor can decode the HDCD signal. Doing so would yield standard 16/44 decoding. Of course, an HDCD disc will play just fine in a non-HDCD player. That said, I've not noticed any real difference between standard CDs and the few HDCDs I've got. True, I've not done any real testing, but it's definitely not a "blow you away" or "make you notice" sort of a difference. I certainly don't think it hurts to have, but I don't believe it's worth paying much extra for (like SACD or DVD-A might be). Ross ------------------ My System's Stuff
  2. For me, a big factor in the "to upgrade my 5800 or not" question will be the final cost of that upgrade. The rumored price (and that's all it is right now, rumor) is all over the place - some reasonable, some not. I'll keep checking here for the latest info. Ross ------------------ My System's Stuff
  3. Uh, James and Ray, I have to politely disagree a bit here. It's been my experience, with my Denon DVD-3300 at least (and my limited selection of 6 or 7 DVD-A discs), that I don't need to have the projector on to play music. In fact, I've only had the projector on once or twice with each disc, and that was only to see what visual content they had (I should have saved the phosphor). Now, I just pop in the disc and hit play. One of my discs also requires an extra press of the "group" button on the Denon. After that, it's just like using a CD player. There may be players or discs that *require* a TV, but I sure don't need it with my setup. Ross ------------------ My System's Stuff
  4. Kain, It's probably been quiet here because we don't know either. One of our local Klipsch dealers was, in September, advertising the RSW-10 for a bit under a grand. That was, obviously, before their release. Well, today I noticed that their Thanksgiving weekend ad highlighted the LF-10B but had no mention of the RSW-10. Odd... 5. Oh, oh... here we go! For the moment, I prefer DVD-Audio only because that's what I've got right now. Isn't that fickle?! Seriously, I've listened to both and I think they're both great formats. I do happen to like multi-channel music and I'm very impressed with DVD-A. But, that doesn't mean I wouldn't be equally happy with multi-channel SACD. My big draw to DVD-A is the material available in that format. That is all subject to change as time goes on, however. Ross BTW - "The Big Phat Band" in DVD-A is incredible! ------------------ My System's Stuff This message has been edited by RossVTaylor on 11-22-2001 at 02:49 PM
  6. The ICBM's been discussed for a while, and eagerly awaited, in the AVS Forum's community. The comments there are extremely positive. The unit was also reviewed in this month's (Nov 2001) Sound and Vision (page 85). There were really no low points to speak of. Ross ------------------ My System's Stuff
  7. Oogins, I'm going to presume that you're asking about bass management as it relates to music and the multi-channel outputs. This seems to be the biggest omission in the DVD-Audio players, and this is what most of the articles have been about. I've also got a 3300. While I'm quite happy with it, it does not (according to what I've read) have bass management for DVD-Audio music. It *does* have a bass management/speaker setup menu (which just gets your hopes up...), but I've read that this only works with Dolby Digital or DTS signals and NOT with DVD-Audio. I believe that to get the bass management you want, you're going to have to buy Outlaw's ICBM . Ross ------------------ My System's Stuff
  8. Mace, It sounds like you're suffering from room modes: high-pressure points/locations at certain frequencies. Room acoustics have a HUGE effect on sound and it would be worthwhile working to tame these modes. You can make resonators of your own (there are various plans on the net for both tube-type traps and pegboard-type perforated panels) to absorb energy at your trouble frequencies. You could also try some of the pre-made foam egg-crate or spiked panels, but these may not absorb the frequencies you need. The whole process of determining exactly what you need, and where to place it, is way above my head. But, with the right stuff your "strobe effect" should be controlable. For materials, you could try Acoustic Sciences or Acoustics First. If you want professional guidance, I'd suggest someone like Denise Erskine who gets rave reviews on the AVS Forum site. Ross Edit: When I started typing this, there were no replies. Gosh, had I known that Gil was gonna respond so quickly I wouldn't have attempted my feeble explanation... whew! ------------------ My System's Stuff This message has been edited by RossVTaylor on 11-20-2001 at 11:21 PM
  9. Flynn, I, also, haven't heard or seen and Adire stuff. But, they're frequently discussed, and praised, on the hometheaterforum.com web site. If you haven't been there, you might want to check it out for info. Ross ------------------ My System's Stuff
  10. Ragjr, I'm using a Paradigm Servo-15 with my LaScalas, and I couldn't be happier with the combo. I had a PW-2200 for a couple of months, but the ported design just didn't mate as well as I'd like. The 2200 was great for movies, but it wasn't "fast" enough (percussive, maybe?) for music with the LaScala's horns. The sealed Servo, however, seems to be tighter and meshes very well. You almost don't know it's there, except that the LaScalas seem to dig deeper - and that's the beauty, I guess. There's no "boom" (unless I'm watching a movie and WANT the boom, of course!). I demoed the True, but not with LaScalas. However, I remember thinking that it wouldn't work well with my horns. Happy shopping, Ross ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
  11. Doug Drake, who lives near me, sent me an email about those yesterday. I started drooling immediately! After all, Sedona's only 40 minutes from my house. At first, I thought - Cool, a 5-channel K-Horn/ShortHorn/Heresy setup! I automatically assumed two K-Horns, two surrounds and a center channel. Then I saw the manufacture dates and realized that they didn't have DTS or DD back then. How our perspectives change! I came close to emailing the seller, also, to clarify the "existence" of another K-Horn. But, I decided to restrain myself since I really have no business buying them. That is, however, a beautifully matched set. If anyone does end up buying them, and thinks they might be in the Phoenix area sometime soon, I'd be happy to pick them up from the seller and store them here safely until you can get them. (This isn't meant as a "sure, I'll store them indefinitely - wink, wink" kind of a joke!) It'd save you shipping if you've got any plans to travel out this way. 12. Hey Mobile Homeless, Don't worry - no flight here! The thread is vry much alive, just not here. I was just saying that I'll restrict my comments on this issue to the thread that resides in the Web Site forum. Thanks, Ross
  13. Myram, Yeah, I just read that also on the Aussie Flagship Receiver site. I also found that my X-30 was defective (no signal light). I swapped it out and now my thump appears to be gone - time will tell, though. Thanks!
  14. Sorry - removal of double post. This message has been edited by RossVTaylor on 10-26-2001 at 07:53 PM
  15. Hi Steve, Although I don't have a 4800, my setup does the same thing with my sub. I've got a 5800 and a Paradigm Servo-15. I'm assuming that our subs are thumping when they first sense a signal and come alive, which would explain why there's no thumpage when switching inputs. My setup didn't thump until I started using the Paradigm X-30 crossover. When I was using the Denon's LFE output, my sub didn't thump. Now that I'm using the main outs into the X-30, I've got a the thump. I see (in your nice linked equipment list ) that you've got an SVS sub. Is your SVS hooked up to the LFE or the main outputs? If it's the L/R pre-outs, that could be the reason for our thumpocity. I think the solution to this is a sequential turn-on with a delay, like some of the power centers do. 16. Bryan, Yup. I guessed Showcase. I've bought most of my stuff from their Scottsdale store, when I lived nearer to that one. Now, I guess, I'd shop at the Arrowhead store - except for the fact that I'm not in a position to be buying anything else for a while! I'll take Showcase and their service anyday, over that "other place" and their free bottles of water. Ross ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
  17. Bryan, Is that Showcase? Ross ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
  18. Doug, either way it still meant the same to me: "just walk away Ross, just walk away..." ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
  19. Gerd, I couldn't have said it better than Tom did! In the mean time, until Al arrives on the scene, you can check out Al's crossover site where he also has downloadable diagrams available. "Here he comes to save the day, mighty Al is on his way..." (sing that over and over in your best baritone voice until Al responds) This message has been edited by RossVTaylor on 10-19-2001 at 11:58 AM
  20. Well, Big, if the President's office doesn't respond you can always try the VP of Customer Care (Jason MacLeon) or their Chief Marketing Officer (Kenneth Dotson). I'm sure you can find someone to rectify your problem. If you need any more info on uBid, you can check out their SEC filing. Good luck to you! ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. 21. > Have too many Klipsch..I think not! My friends and > coworkers think that I'm half a bubble off plumb, > because of the number of Klipsch I have, and that > I passionately pursue buying more. Add to that list my wife, who (at least once in every Klipsch conversation) asks me, "well, why don't I ever hear about Klipsch anywhere else or ever see their ads?" Maybe it's time for Klipsch ads in Ladies Home Journal and Vogue! ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
  22. I was recently talking to a new-hire at work about my love for music and HT, and I obviously mentioned my prized Klipsch Heritage speakers. When he replied, "Well, I'm sort of spoiled by Bose" I knew it was time to just change the subject... Some people are just beyond help. Ross ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. 23. To boldly go where no man has gone before... Sounds somewhat familiar. And fun! Keep us posted, Ross ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
  24. Malcolm, John was referring to our friend, SteveP. Steve made up a custom center channel for his Heritage setup, very similar to what you have in mind. I'm sure Steve will spot this thread and chime in with more info and pictures. Or, you could search out some of his posts (and I think he's posted pics before, too). Ross ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
  25. Tubenube, If it helps any, I've got LaScalas in a much smaller room than yours. My room is only 10.5 feet wide and 21 long (if that sounds like a converted single-car garage, you're right) and they're on the narrow wall. My music tastes are very similar to yours - almost identical. I absolutely love my LaScalas! I had RB-5's and they're a fantastic speaker for the size. I've also got Heresy II's, which I love. But, neither is as open yet tight and percussive as the LaScalas. I got mine used for about a grand, but they can be had cheaper. DougDrake recently missed a pair in our local paper for much less! If you like the LaScalas, then you'll love the Klipschorns. More bucks, but more bottom end. Ross ------------------ "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
