  1. Try a pair of KG 1.2/1.5 or KG 2.2/2.5. I have the identical front trio as you and it sounds incredible. The KG speakers I mentioned are "bookshelf" speakers and can easily be mounted on a wall or shelf. They do a very good job in keeping up with the Chorus IIs. You can find any of these speakers on eBay pretty regularily. The x.5 series were predrilled for Omnimount brackets, to aid in mounting to walls, ceilings, etc. One other point. Most movies don't have anything in the back center channel, as that is a relatively new format. So, since you can't hear anything in the back doesn't mean there is something to be heard. Then again, if you have a receiver that has Dolby Pro Logic IIx, which converts any 2-ch or 5-ch source into full 7.1, and you aren't hearing anything from the SS1's, then you have other problems. As folks have said above, it's not best to mix "brands," Heritage, Reference, etc, as they are not timbre matched, which makes a big difference.
  2. fini- I think you would need slippers with that snapper. "Take two and call me in the morning."
  3. Craig- This is similar to the Heritage Owner's Poll that HDBRBuilder posted over in the Updating Older Speakers forum, so there's lots of great stories over there. I took your post to mean when did the actual Klipschorn "get" my ear. For me, it was 1987, 18 yrs old. My parents were looking at new stereo equipment and we all got to hear the Klipschorn. Wow! They ended up with Fortes, but it started us all on a Klipsch love affair. For me, it was HT first, built over several years into the system I have now. But I always remembered the Klipschorn sound. I was reintroduced to them about 2 years ago and landed my pair of '68s last year. Love 'em, won't ever part with 'em.
  4. Indy- My wife and I will be seeing the same show later in the month here in Denver. Should be pretty good! She's treating me for my b-day. Though she may be disappointed because I heard Glen Burtnik isn't playing on this tour. She likes the way he "moves" around on stage. Something about a "cute butt." Then again, she does like Tommy Shaw too. We'll have to compare concert reviews.
  5. Doug's moving truck pulls up in about 10 days, so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for the offer.
  6. I'll add my thoughts on Heritage speakers for HT. My HT started with a DPL receiver in '93, with Forte IIs, no surrounds and a phantom center. The next year I added a pair of KG 1.2s for surrounds and a KV-3 center. It sounded spectacular and my place was popular for movie nights. In '00, I upgraded to a DD receiver and bought another pair of KG 1.2s for surround back duty, as well as a PW-2200 for a sub. I really enjoyed the way the little KGs matched up with the Fortes. Then I learned about timbre matching and was able to find a local Academy. MMM, sweet stuff across the front trio, though the KV-3 is quite a good speaker. Enter a set of Chorus IIs for mains, Forte IIs moved to surrounds and the trusty KG 1.2s keep going in back. I was at Indy last year and the Ronin demo was good, but I perfered my current system, though I admit, the demo wasn't on the RF-7s. I was "stuck" in the Heritage room when they played Matrix shootout scene on the RF-7s. Once my basement is done, I'll be replacing the Academy with another Chorus II and revel in the sound. I enjoy the classic lines of the "extended" Heritage models and the great sound they produce with their 3-way design. Maybe someday I could do a fully-horn-loaded system, but I'd need a much bigger room. Do yourself a favor, jump on those Fortes as they will be the start of a great system. Then, depending on your space availability, look for another set, or maybe the KG 1.2/1.5 or 2.2/2.5 for rears. Centers are open season. In a pinch, you could use a KV-3 until you find an Academy, or maybe try the Heresy. There are two Academys up on eBay now, and the last one sold for a relatively "reasonable" price, below $500 if I remember correctly. Enjoy!!
  7. These may be the KG 1.2. I have a set in oiled oak. The KG 1.5 were predrilled for Omnimount brackets, and I didn't see any holes there. The stickers may have faded due to sunlight. One of my set has the same thing. You can still see the sticker, but the signatures have faded as have the S/Ns. Then again, my 1.2s have screws in front to access the drivers and the grills fit into slots between the motorboard and sides. These look like the grills use some sort of "plug" to attach. So, the more I think about it, these may not be the 1.2s.
  8. I get S&V, TAS, and TPV. All three have their good points and bad points, but think they give a pretty good overview of what's out there. With TAS, they get a bit pricey, but always nice to dream.
  9. Gary- Rumor has it that SVS will be making micro-box subs sometime later this year, so depending on your time frame, maybe one of these would work? They usually do a pre-order with a discount before they launch a new sub. I did that with my 20-39PC+ and I'm glad I did. OP- I'm surprised nobody has taken you up on that sub yet. I am tempted and could have Doug Drake bring it up to CO when they move, but I don't know that I have room for another sub in the theater. I'm finishing my basement and should be able to start bringing the HT gear back in in about 2 weeks. I'll see if I could squeeze another in.
  10. Indy- I am finishing our basement and we bought a variety of recliners from Lane, in their Majestic line. http://www.action-lane.com/Products/ProdInfoDet.asp?MasterNo=12690 We got the microfiber fabric which should be good for small kids and the prices were pretty reasonable. We got a couple of separate recliners, and a left/right recliner combo with the "center island" for extra cupholders as well as the storage compartment for the remotes. Prices for the 5 pieces were pretty reasonable. I'd post some pics, but right now they are all in the garage. Construction will be done in a couple weeks, so I can post some pics then if you want. We bought at Homestead House, and I think they are a national chain. But you could certainly look around for other Lane distributors, as I'm sure you have a ton in Indy. They are quite comfortable, and give a nice feel to the room. And reclining is waaay cool.
  11. Randy- That's what I figure I'll be doing at this...lots of listening, dreaming, and drooling. Edit: Yahoo, post #1000, I officially have No Life.
  12. Justin- Check out the Philips DVD795SA. It is a 5-disc DVD player with SACD capability, built-in DD/DTS decoders, and it has an upsampler on-board for CD listening. I bought one and it arrived Saturday. Haven't had a chance to hook it up yet, as there were lots of honey-do's first. If it sounds good, I plan on using it in my 2-ch system exclusively. For about $150, you can't go wrong...SACD, upsampling, and 5-disc capacity. J&R has them, as well as a number of other locations.
  13. I'll add my congrats as well. Always good to find the love of your life in flesh as well as in 3/4" plywood with wonderful veneers.
  14. Craig- If you come out, let me know and I'll have you over for a demo with your 299B and my K-horns. By then, the theater will also be done, so you can see what a front trio of Chorus IIs sound like. Maybe you could bring along a set of your VRDs and we could do some demos. Rob
  15. Craig- That's an incredible score! Rosewood K-horns are beautiful, just ask Edster. You should also go out and buy some lottery tickets...I think you just might have the luck running with you. Nice to hear they are going to someone who will appreciate them, not the "junk man."
  16. Tri- Yes, I saw that several months ago, thanks to fellow member Sprocket. I plan on attending, and I think he will be coming from CT as well. Should be a good time. I'm certainly interested in what Welborne displays and the Bottlehead folks. There will be a few rooms I avoid, but should be pretty fun.
  17. Lynnm- Yes, it was quite a saga, and I'm really pleased things worked out the way they did, especially since you were able to find a pair of your own. I'll certainly keep them as long as I'm around...maybe even pass them along to my 4-month old when she's ready, and I'm gone.
  18. '68 KBWO Klipschorns, all original, cane grills almost perfect-$1600 black Academy, 15 min from my house, $325, a year before they started going up in price
  19. Gary- Also look into the Paradigm line. I have the PW-2200 which I used in my HT before I got my SVS. It did a very nice job on movies and music. It's pretty big though, so you probably won't be able to put it under a table. But I think Paradigm also makes some smaller cubes. SVS does too, just not sure on how big they really are. If you want really small, Ear has lots of good things to say about the Sunfire Jr, and other compact subs.
  20. Paul- Great score. KG-4s for under $200 is quite a deal. I'm sure you'll enjoy them...and then get the upgrade bug like we all seem to do. I really enjoy the Quartet/Forte/Chorus line myself. Welcome to the boards. I'm ex-AF myself.
  21. Yep, Alan's post sums it up right. At least we all agree on Heritage. Now if we can just be a bit more civil about how to power them...

    DVI vs RGB

I'm not an expert on these cables, but I'm learning. I am assuming you are talking about component video cables, most likely with RCA plugs. These are the best you can get in the analog environment, better than S-video, or composite. DVI cables transport a digital signal, but you have to have a DVD and a receiver that can handle that type of signal. DVI means the DVD player will send the bitstream to the receiver, which will then decode the signal. If you have great DACs in your receiver, then that will work fine. But you may have better decoders on your DVD player, so the component cables would transport the analog signal fine. I'm sure others will chime in, but that's a short description. It all depends on your equipment.
  23. And be sure to ask the doc if that is he ring, or his watch!
  24. I KNOW I shouldn't weigh in on this thread, but I'll have to say that I really enjoy my NOS Valve-d 299B. I heard Gary's last year on his zebrawood CW's and it sounded great. It was the final push for me to get one for my K-horns. Granted, I have not heard a stock 299B, so I don't have anything to compare to. While I don't classify myself as a "golden ear," I really enjoy the sound of the Scott/K-horn combo. On a side note, I had a rebuilt Fisher 400 in the house for a couple weeks and did a bit of A/B comparison. Fisher had a bit more bottom end, but the Scott was overall a cleaner and clearer presentation. We did a bit of tube rolling too; the mix of RCA, GE, Sylvania 7868s which were in the unit, a set of NOS RCAs, and a set of Ultron tubes. My wife and I thought the RCAs were quite good, though a bit more "analytical" in their presentation, almost "digital." The Ultrons seemed to perform the best, good bottom end, and smooth sound throughout. But the matched quads (both RCA and Ultron) did sound better than the mixed quad. The Fisher will take over in my parent's 2-ch system powering Chorus IIs, so that will be fun to set up this weekend.
