  1. Hey look on the bright side. Somalia hasnt had a government in two decades and they are doing fine! Hopefully Libya and Iran will follow suit!
  2. Lots of good values thrown out there in this thread. I would look for the most balanced sub for the buck if I was buying. Its hard to find a sub that will produce 12-16HZ for HT at a decent db and then turn around and double as a "musical" sub. I have listened to a few out there, but it was a no brainer for me when it came time to choosing just one.
  3. They are a "traditional" shaped speaker, but in all honesty after you give them a listen, I bet you will throw the skinny's to the curb. As far as the GF goes, if she enjoys music she will hear the difference.
  4. That message was from the TV. I dont guess you got to try the Svideo side of the monitor out yet. Maybe you will get lucky and the RCA side will have a broken connection.
  5. Wow you're right. I just sampled several tracks here. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_srch_drd_B001BC3EH2?ie=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=digital-music&field-keywords=DJ%20Billy-E Try out sine wave sequence 5.
  6. I just wired mine up and didnt have an issue getting it to come on. One thing I noticed is that there is a monitor out on the Svideo side as well. If you have an Svideo input on the TV give that a shot.
  7. I will check in on this thread this evening. This way I can go step by step on my unit and make sure I am not leaving anything out.
  8. It sounds like you have it hooked up correctly, but just to make sure.... Only hook the cable coming from the "monitor out" on the back of the receiver to a input on the TV that has the old red+white (audio) and yellow (video) option. Make sure no video inputs have been reassigned on the TV...which I dont think is possible on that model. Your TV will not recognize or say AVR, Denon etc. on its souce menu. Just make sure your TV is showing the correct input that you are trying to send a signal to. Also, make sure that remote has both of the slide switches at the top slid all the way to the left. The right top slide switch on the remote will cancel functions if not moved all the way to the left. BTW, try the enter button AND the onscreen button to see if it pops up. Figured you already have, but wanted to make sure
  9. Im still using my old AVR 3600 and it is indeed a great sounding receiver, not to mention it is a massive unit for a mid series. I have a modern Samsung flat screen and have no problem using the OSD. As long as the input source is correct on the TV you should be able to plug an RCA cord from the monitor out to any "old school" yellow colored video input in on the TV and get it to display. You might try the easy access inputs located on many tv's that are located in the front or on the side of the TV. I dont hink it will work with any other input than an old style basic one. One thing I would make certain is that your source selection is correct on the TV and it has not been programmed to switch or divert it to another. I can give some hands on help tonight once I get home from work. To be honest I hooked mine up set the measurments and never used it again. I cant remember the last time I pulled it up.
  10. Someone a lot smarter than me can answer this, but here is my shot at it.... doesnt sound disperse as it is emitted? Somewhat in all directions? Direct sound will obviously be louder in a stright path, but it seems to me the horn collects sounds and disperses it better like putting your hands around your mouth and yell as opposed to not using your hands. I would think that there is a very major increase in DB when the horn in attached to the driver as compared to without it.
  11. So do I have to use something like that Buffalo unit or will any "new" wireless router do the same thing? Thanks for the info
  12. I have a WIFI setup in my downstairs office. I need to get internet via a Cat5 cable to hook my new receiver up with. the receiver is upstairs in my listening room. Is there some sort of "bridge" device that will grab my Wifi signal and convert it to a hard line for my receiver? I would manually run a cable, but Im dealing with exterior walls, steep roof angles and pumped foam insulation. Thanks
  13. No way I would swap my LaScala's for some Cornwall's. Having said that, I loved my old Cornwalls, but after I got a dose of that big mid horn and the dynamics they produce it was a done deal. Cornwalls are great for low to mid level listening IMO, but mine kind of got ugly after 50 or so watts. I would still consider some Cornwall II's for my surrounds and might even swap my Chorus for some.

  15. I like and respect Mike Patton's direction and Peeping Tom is some cool stuff. All other items mentioned sound good but I haven't heard. Didn't know about All Saints.... thanks! The All Saints disk kind of grabbed me off gaurd. I didnt expect an instrumental from Bowie, but when I saw it I had to have it. Its a very spacial recording and always one I enjoy. Another "non standard" Bowie album I couldnt do without is "Outside". Very trippy album that had many influences from Bowies old pal Trent Reznor. I also have the Reality Tour DVD that is in 5.1 and it sounds great too. As far as Patton goes, that dude is a musical genious IMO. He has HUGE vocal range and can belt it out in any NYC Opera with the best of them and two hours later he is spewing old FNM hits. Mike has to be the most ecclectic musian EVER! Oh yeah, he actually did all the animal/monster sounds for the movie "I am Legend" with his own voice and came up with all the crazy sound work in the movie "Crank". I dont have many staples that I always come back to when it comes to music, but Bowie and Patton are always there. The latest musician that has wowed me over the past few years is Josh Homme of "Kyuss", "Queens of the Stone Age", "Eagle of Death Metal", "Desert Sessions" and "Them Crooked Vultures" featuring John Paul Jones!. As far as my listening tastes go he is bringing the sound that I can relate to and enjoy when it comes to meshing old style rock with the newer sound and clicks of today. All of his bands I listed are still in action except for Kyuss which was his first when he was much younger. This guy is one busy musician. BTW, Queens of the Stone Age did a concert DVD in 5.1 called "Over the years and through the woods"...its a must buy IMO.
  16. For something that reaches out and grabs you, I like David Bowies Instrumental album ALL SAINTS. The track "Abdulmajid" has a bit of everything. Great dynamics and suprise doses of very low bass. Lots of other good tracks on the album. It was recorded pretty darn clean IMO. Forgot to mention that this track really shines when heard in 5+ channel stereo. But then again, I prefer listening to all my audio in multi channels. For something a little lighter I like Mike Pattons spin off group Peeping Tom. The song "Caipirinha" featuring Bebel Gilberto is pretty nice. Also on the Peeping Tom album is the song "Sucker" featuring Nora Jones, which is definately worth a listen and will let you know immediately that Nora has a darker side and just might be a naughty girl! She definately is in the song.
  17. Well, if they are going to outlaw the song because they used a slang word directed towards a homosexual they will have to outlaw all the Rap music that uses the N word too. I mean if you are going to be correct at least do it right man! They have too much time on their hands up there to worry about a 25 year old song. No direct poke towards Canada here. We all know the US does a lot of stupid things in this direction as well.
  18. Im looking for some bookshelf sized guys for my "wifes" TV. Is there a big difference between these two guys? I can pick a set of the RB 25's for a less, but I am curious if the horn is different. I have also found the RB 51's new for 260 bucks shipped, but I figured I might consider the RB 25's with more db and the bigger LF driver. Anyone have any input on this?
  19. I used to have a watch hangup a few years ago. I have a Breitling, Tissot and a Raymond Weil. Each has a little part of history behind them when they were purchased, but I very rarely wear them anymore. Bought the wife an Omega a few years ago and it and my Raymond have been the most durable out of all we own, but obviously she is not as hard on a watch as I am. The Breitling had to go back to the company from moisture intrusion. The Tissot had the auto winding mechanism go out. In the past few months the wifes Omega's second hand has fallen off the post, but its prob 10-12 years old. The Raymond has just needed batteries. Now Im too nervous to wear any of them everyday and just put one on If I have to wear a monkey suit somewhere. I dang near bought a waterproof Citizen while on vacation to beat around in, but the wifes new camera took care of that. Check out the new line up of Oris. I know Oris is not a hey look at me brand that the average Joe can identify with, but their new line is very cool and sadly not cheap.
  20. It wouldnt make sense to not "protect" an investment. However, many mergers and buyouts involve bad decisions from parent companies as history shows. I would be more concerned about management and employee's than a forum that anyone can start up. It is nice to have some contact with the company directly here though.
  21. Thanks for the reply Arky. A new Receiver that will calibrate is in the works and I hope to have it around spring. I just moved and the new HT room is quite different from my last. My last room had hardwood floors on a concrete slab, 9 ft ceilings and was a slight rectangle in shape. Tons of echos, and bouncing sound. A few rugs helped things, but it still was really bright. When we moved my whole system suddenly sounded totaly different. It is much more tame now from the carpet and the wider distance the mains are separated. My LaScalas immediately picked up more bass and details that I was missing out on.. Im guessing the dove tail corners in this room are giving them a boost. I am going to paint the ceiling and change the lighting and thought It would be a good time to hang some panels if it would help the SQ and allow me to turn it up a tad more at night when the boss is asleep. I didnt really know how effective the panels were or if you could rob some of your sound if improperly placed. My room is pretty small and overpowerd so I figured putting a few panels up wouldnt hurt and might even help smooth things out at higher levels. Oh yeah this room is on the second floor and my SVS is hammering the kitchen below, but not much I can do about that.
  22. As far as Latin listening goes, Im always a sucker for Astrud or Bebel Gilberto. My friends usually kind of trip when I jump to this after playing some of the Fantomas or Mr. Bungle.
  23. Do these panels offer any benefits other than trapping echos or helping insulate a listening enviorment. My room is pretty small and is cut up with quite a few angles at the rear of it. Just wondering if I would benfit in any way other than insulating the sound from my room which my wife would love. Thanks guys Here is the layout of the room Please overlook my "gun smoke" ceiling fan Just moved to this house and still wiring and setting things up.
  24. "Attention Walmart shoppers.... we are now having a blue light special on the Teakwood Jubilee speakers you see on the endcap of isle 3" HaHa! Good one Rich. If it were only that simple...wait, that could be very bad or very good!
  25. They expanded, built a factory in Pennsylvania, sold more bikes than ever before, designed the Evolution series bikes, HD dealers made lots of money, then the employees bought the company. Still going strong and setting sales records. Wiki and other sources sure come across much differently..... In 1969, American Machinery and Foundry (AMF) bought the company, streamlined production, and slashed the workforce. This tactic resulted in a labor strike and a lower quality of bikes. The bikes were expensive and inferior in performance, handling, and quality to Japanese motorcycles. Sales declined, quality plummeted, and the company almost went bankrupt.[40] The "Harley-Davidson" name was mocked as "Hardly Ableson", "Hardly Driveable," and "Hogly Ferguson",[41][42] and the nickname "Hog" became pejorative 1969, Time for a merger with the American Machine and Foudry Company (AMF). However, the quality decreased ernormously and the Super Glide and the SLCR Caféracer of 1970 got a bad name. But Harley Davidson bought itself out and survived and with launching the new Evolution-motor in 1984, the company managed to create a modern motorcycle, which was still a Harley Davidson. AMF could have risen to the challenge presented by the sophisticated and comparatively affordable Honda. Instead, AMF’s managers roll a real gutter-ball. Harley-Davidson quality plummets. Before long, dealers are forced to rebuild motors under warranty and magazines are brutally critical of test bikes. Used Harleys are described as “pre-AMF” in classified ads.
