  1. Greg, I wanted to reduce the stress on the glued edges as I cut so I remember hanging wallpaper (which I really dislike) and it occurred to me that this would not stress the edge and leave small uniform overhang and protect the freshly placed side veneer from my unsteady knife. Sorry for the crude drawing.
  2. My re-entry to vinyl started with a project debut III, then a heavily modified ar ES1, the a thorens td150, then a thorens td124. The td124 is by farr the best table. Great pace, a solid foundation to the sound and very low noise floor. Project
  3. First of all thank you for all the great posts of past projects on the site and especially to Greg for the detailed tips and pictures on his site. http://www.dcchomes.com/Gregsaudio.html Finally started the veneering after the sanded cabinets sat waiting in my shop for almost a year. I picked up some lascalas that put the project on the back burner. I decided to restore them to a stock look rather than do any big modifications. I procededwith a final fill and sand of the cornwall cabinets. Layed out the cherry veneer and found that it would have been better to two 10 foot sheets rather than two 8 foot sheets. That way the layout for the four surfaces of each cabinet could have been consecutive. Painted the cabinets and veneer sheets with heatlock glue. Wrapped one speaker. Sides first, then top and bottom. Found that using a wide putty knife as a spacer while trimming the cross grain left nice uniform edge of veneer that could be sanded flush eaisly. Veneer trimmer worked great in the straight grain cuts if you cut with the feathered direction of the straight grain. The paper backed veneer from oakwood was very easy to work with and left great looking corners. I will work on the mitered edge banding this week in the evenings after work and take some pictures.
  4. I have listened to a lot of turntables and the best bang for the my buck has been my refurbished 1963 thorens td 124 with a rega tonearm. It competes with turntables well over $5,000 IMHO.
  5. At under $400 I agree with the quartet recommendation without reservation. I sold mine because I got some cornwalls and lascalas.
  6. I built mine in a custom size for my smaller equipment. You could use the same idea for any size and number of shelves. Used 1 1/2" mdf shelves, steel thread rod and brass nuts and bolts, brass and neoprene washers. There are three spikes under each shelf made of brass screws I ground down and mounted in threaded collars. I used brass tubing but I saw that some one here used pvc and spray painted it. That would have saved me money. Good luck.
  7. How would those horns sound with standard corwall 2 drivers and crossovers?
  8. The gear looks great. You are a lucky man. I notice you qualified that the "imaging was superb tonight". I also notice that the same recording on the same system sounds different from session to session. Is it head congestion, hearing sensitivity changes or mental illness?
  9. Could you describe your take on the sonic difference between the cast and the older stamped frame woofers?
  10. I read this old post and wonder if the horns ever got a copper treatment. Are there any pictures out there?
  11. Greg, Would you veneer the inside surfaces before fitting the brace to save fitting the veneer around the brace? Pete
  12. I've seen Buddy during the last two summers at hampton beach in NH. The first show he was having a bad night. The second show was with George Thorogood and he was very good. He did his traditional tour of the room.
  13. My Apple Mac Mini with itunes is very quiet. I keep it in a corner away from the listing position. It does not even compete with the other mechanical noise in the house such as heat and air conditioning. I will not have forced air in my next home. I looked at a lot of cheaper dacs other than the wavelength brick but I got it at a reasonable price used on audiogon. If I had bought new I would have tried the something in the musical fidelity line. Do you have any good stores in Montreal that would let you try some dacs at home? I wandered in to the mcintosh dealer in downtown Montreal on my last visit and they seemed accommodating. I do not remember any dacs though. Lots of headphone stuff and some nice JBL and mcintosh speakers.
  14. I started with an m-audio stereophile for a dac and for needledrops, the sound was very good but not up to the level of my hybrid cd player. I upgraded to a used wavelength brick. Oh my. This dac is very nice and it will out perform my cd player with lossless files. It does not do well with low bit rate files. It is away getting an upgrade right now and I look forward to the promised improvement. I also have read very good things about the v dac mentioned previously for $299. I heard the $900 entry level wavelength in a store a couple week ago and it sounded very good but i was hard to have a frame of reference because it was not my system or source material.
  15. I have used audacity software (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) which is free. I loaded it on an apple mac mini and connect via an m-audio stereophile. The m-audio connects to the computer via usb. The rca from my phono stage outputs to the m-audio. The dac in the m-audio is ok but I think that significant improvement would be possible with a better dac. I have done a few records but it is time consuming to record both sides of an album, run declick on the file, then break out and label the tracks. I believe there is software that can do it all in one process and load the track info but you must pay the man.
  16. I do not know anything about the VRDs other than great reputation thay have in he forum. I wanted to weigh in my Cayin experience. I love my Cayin A50T. It is biult like a tank and dead quiet. I have compared it to newer MC275, Older MC75s, VTL EL34 monoblocks, Primaluna prologues, Cary AE 6 packs, Rebuilt Scott 99s, Creek SS, and Adcom. All comparisons were close but I have always chosen to keep the Cayin with my Klipschs. There seems to be complementary nature between my amp and the klipsch horns. BTW I also have the Cayin hybrid cd player that is also very nice.
  17. I started with a m-audio audiophile and the I got a wavelength brick last year. The m-audio sounded way better than a line out from the apple computer. The difference with the brick is tremendous. The wavelength makes lossless files sound as good as my redbook cds on my cayin hybrid cd player. The brick does not resolve lower density files (128-256 rate) as well as the m-audio. But now that I have the convenience cd quality on a music server I only listen to lossless files.
  18. Woodcraft $30 http://www.woodcraft.com/product.aspx?ProductID=08A62&FamilyID=3087
  19. Just finished jig saw cut on top frame. Glued up 3/4" mahogany with mitered corners. I am away on bisiness for two weeks so I will not be complete for a while.
