  1. Dave, I never even considered that. What a great idea, simple whole house music, and the car, and the neighbors car, and their neighbors. Here's one I stared at - http://www.hobbytron.com/1-watt-fm-transmitter.html. This one's a little closer to $400.
  2. Since I use a laptop and drag it around to different systems, and since I'm still trying to decide what DAC I will wind up with, I just grabbed one of these http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/272070-REG/M_Audio_9900_50727_00_Audiophile_USB_Audio_Interface.html $144 seems like a deal, and for some reason they seem hard to locate. Many places list them as discontinued or out-of-stock. I figure toss it in the bag with the computer. If you're hunting a DAC to fiddle with and not wanting to make a big investment this might be a good choice. Least I thought so.
  3. Will it not work? Yup, can do Will work well? Won't sound right is my experience, POD or not. The POD will make it sound so different you may like it. Try it. And be perfectly safe for my speakers? Therein lies the problem. You can trash the speakers, so it isn't "perfectly safe." I do it at low volumes sometimes, but MAS is right ... why risk it when there are so many cheap options. Can plug headphones into POD. Maybe I missed your point. POD is nice tho.
  4. Here's a couple ideas for the rack, both Gator and SKB make a lot of stuff along these lines, rolling, wrap up tight when not in use. They can be economical if you forego the use as a mixer stand and just grab a rolling SKB with whatever space you need. You can sit stuff on it, but it's probably too low on the side for mixing. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/SKB-SKBRLX-RollX-Rack-Case-with-Wheels?sku=544590 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gator-GRC10X12-PU-Popup-Console-Rack?sku=546162 The sonotube style subs seem among the easiest to construct to me. Especially if you could work them into the decor somehow. Artificial plant stands or something perhaps. Nice project btw.
  5. My vote is plug guitar into fuzz box and compressor. Replace 9 volt battery with 12 volt marine battery. Plug ye ole faithful axe into receiver. Turn speakers off. Place headphones on ears and get ready. Put on rubber flipflops. Begin jam and enjoy feedback squeals. When hair starts smoldering dump 1/4 can of beer on head. Drink 3/4 can to prevent beer from warming. Repeat process to avoid actual flames from headphones. Try to keep beer out of receiver. Try to keep OSHA out of jam room. When beer is gone, remove headphones, recharge battery and make beer run. Repeat process. Beer can be used, if required to reduce any visible flames in receiver.
  6. H'lo Max I'm in the middle of the wireless solution. MacBook with disk server. I intend, and am told, that wireless music shall work fine. Need the extreme base tho, not airport express. A few security features might need turned off. I believe, but am not positive yet, that I should be able to do wireless DVD. I looked into FLAC a lot, and would go that route if I had a PC system. It's possible with Apple, but so much easier to use iTunes and uncompressed music. I don't compress anything, although I probably will when I send to the iPod at some point. Storage is fairly cheap so I keep it original. Regards,
  7. I quite love them on CMT tonight. What a great unique sound. Alison singing When the Levee Breaks. Good stuff.
  8. Two yard sales this weekend. One guy found two boxes of albums in the attic of a house he was working on. Allman Bros., Outlaws, all kinds of stuff. Other one a lady had well over a couple thousand records. Bought lots of wierd stuff (for me) - classical, Sinatra, cowboy songs, rock, pop, tons of things. I wish I knew better what to look for. 110 albums for 45 bucks. Many look like they were played once. Someday, I have to organize this compulsive obsession.
  9. Thanks Dave, this is exactly what I needed. I hadn't thought about an expander and the software tips should save some time.
  10. I read the Rhapsody web feed is AAC which your Denon might not totally understand. Do you run CD's thru it? How's that sound? I'm not sure if Rhapsody is still using AAC, I think they were a couple years ago. Never really tried it myself.
  11. I agree for a music server, tho Windows probably can do a FLAC/Foobar/DVD/Media center type system, currently with a few more "features". But, if you go uncompressed, I like Mac.
  12. Hard to say w/o more info, but if you are running a micro jack split into RCA's as the comparison, I'd take a wild guess at this point that your stream audio is being upsampled by the Denon as it tries to help. As I said, a guess. What kind of stream are you playing?
  13. Carnagie Deli (7th Ave) is worth one visit just just to look at the place. Deserts are wild. Churrascaria Platafoma is one of our favorite stops. One of the best Brazilian style in the USA. Not sure if they still have two, the Broadway one has a little better service I think. Maybe a bit older. The Tribeca one is more intimate maybe. Tho I doubt that's the right word since they both have the gauchomen with meat on a split. Try a caipirinha if you never have. Not exactly like they are in Brazil, but they taste good. I'll hunt up the name of the place where we LOVE the osso bucco and veal parmesan. Wife makes better osso to be honest, but their Veal P hangs off the plate, is thin and the best.
  14. Started with my Dad's tube amp in 3rd grade for me. Followed by a long succession of Fender, Marshall stuff and an old favorite Ampeg B-15 flip top where the tubes glowed by note. Man I miss that thing. Then the desire to upgrade the home sound drove me into full range drivers, with low watt tube research, followed by speaker efficiency leading me to Klipsch and the smarter than me forum folks here steering me to VRD amps. I was ready to pull the trigger on some 300B amps and learned a little more power might help (among many other things). The right choice for me since I frequently attempt to damage my hearing.
  15. Got plate? I'm with Groom, one on the truck, one on the daily beater. They be purdy.
  16. I use the passive Niles DPS1 to switch between VRDs and an Outlaw 2150. Works groovy. It's smaller than it looks in the pics, keep the wires to ~1/4 inch. I got one for 69 smackers from JR Music. They are a lil pricey by the pound, but sturdy for sure.
  17. I hear it plays the new 1.25" Bluetooth LP's I love it!
  18. I use an Outlaw http://www.gspr.com/outlaw/rr2150_design.html and tube amps on a A/B switchbox. I really like this outlaw doodad. MM MC phono inputs, tuner, USB input, jack for iPod stuff on front. Has everything I wanted to keep music at my wife's fingertips w/o a lot of buttons to press. Doesn't have switched plugs on back as I recall, but does have 12v trigger. I really think it sounds good and it's darn quiet to me. Course it only looks kinda retro.
  19. Thanks Rivendell I do like the Benchmark. Took the plunge and ordered a Drobo http://www.drobo.com/products.aspx and two 750 GB drives http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136131. So far I'm sticking with iTunes, mainly for the integration/tagging/album lookups. VLC is interesting, but needs a separate ripper if I recall right. Also peeking at Handbrake for DVD. Thinking I will just USB Drobo to the Macbook for now. Down the road maybe move storage into utility room with Airport Express base station. Waiting on UPS ....
  20. That put a nice smile on my face at work - thanks
  21. Ditto for ours too. We drive from Tampa to Orlando. We did a water heater room with bookcases and file cabinets recently. They have insanely low prices on some things. I am lucky if I can get my wife out of there in less than 3 hours!
  22. Okay, maybe I'm a little biased, but can confirm 600+ ft/lbs can move KHorns
  23. Yup - agreed For a 4 wheeled job I'm gonna guess, and that's all it is - an F-250 diesel. 650 ft pounds for about 30 grand. Similar for all the RAM/GMC trucks really. A car would need 325 ft pounds at 15 grand to compete. Most 15 grand cars are 150 - 180. Can't think of a specialty vehicle that is 162 ft pounds for 7.5 grand or so that would match those heavy haulers on a ft pound per dollar comparison. Maybe a tractor out there but they cost more than $7,500 I'd guess.
