  1. Really? I feel *exactly* the opposite. Nothing resembles best the brilliance and furiousness of an entire orchestra than horns. Try to listen to horn instruments on a cone driven system... muuudyyyy
  2. Tom! And are you happy without all your precious stuff? I know you loved it, because in every forum I saw you talking about the marvels of old Altec Lansing stuff... What I find more interesting is that one of the main advocates of tubes and horns now use a receiver and a pair of not horn speakers!
  3. MAXG, Thans for your answer. With so many clowns around I consider your post specially meaningful.
  4. You know, that recording that really puts the musicians in front of you, with pin point imaging, when you feel you can stand up and walk in between the instruments.
  5. Yes, the numbers were really impressive. Even Tom (from SVS) told me they were extremely good (for a DIY proyect). When I was researching to build my sub I was tempted also by the Tumult, but after listening for just a few days my Tempest I have decided that I don't need more bass, I feel sick if I really push it right now! Maybe if the WAF were a problem (she doesn't tell me anything because the room I use for my two channel hoby is "for my stuff") or if I didn't have the space to put it (it is BIG) I would consider a Tumult, but for now, Im a happy camper.
  6. Fire Pinch!! WOW those are good numbers indeed! My Tempest is 214L with just one big (6 inch) port. The results look pretty similar. I once did distortion tests, and I got (Im from memory here) about 110dB at 18Hz with less than 10% THD. Not bad... huh?
  7. I do have them on stands, for me, the mid horn and the tweeter should be at ear level. I could not tell if that makes them image better though
  8. I want to use my old Dynaco Quadaptor in my stereo gear, but I wonder about rear speakers "match". I guess this step is not as important as in a Home Theater setup, but I want to be sure before setting the Quadaptor on (and all cables etc).
  9. Oh, the Asylum... I know the place, in fact, I posted there my review on the ADE24. Thnks Kelly, oh by the way, Im sure that your ADE is one of the first models, I have talked to Margules himself and he says that the new units are MUCH better... Oh, and don't worry Sunnysal, I will take a more carefull look over there, it seems a really interesting place.
  10. "I will NEVER get in another debate with a SPECS AND MEASUREMENTS ARE ABSOLUTE crew." Hey! come on! EVERYBODY knows that good measurements = accuracy!!! On a serious note, glad to see you.
  11. "Perfect sound reproduction is currently unattainable...why? well first of all no one can agree on how to measure to confirm perfect reproduction. hang around AA or other BBoards with a more technical slant a watch the battles, with religious fervor, over just how to measure an audio signal to establish whether or not it is getting closer to the original. what to measure, where to measure, how to measure. all discussed by highly qualified engineers from a variety of fields and still not resolved." I agree, but Im also curious in this "AA or other BBoards"? Where are they? I want to read and learn. thanks!
  12. "Are you saying your preamp has no ability to switch to mono?" Nope, it is an integrated amp, without a mono switch. Oh and regarding the speakers! cheapest of all RCA "full range" cube 3 inch speakers! they suck! hehe, but its all I have in hands at this moment to do some testing. I guess I better calm down and get a set of better ones, maybe some Klipsch bookshelf or something.
  13. I do have the original, in excellent shape. The instructions are there, but I don't have a mono source, is that a problem? Also, I have two small speakers, but they only have a range from 150 to about 18000hz, would that be ok?
  14. Dave I also have a Dynaco Quadaptor somewhere in my house... I have been thinking in adding it to my gear, what can you tell me about it? I tried it a long time ago, but my gear was really midfi at that time (Marantz entry level complete system) with some cheap surround speakers...
  15. Well... MY cd does not sound harsh! http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue6/ade24.htm Anyone interested can read my own review, it is somewhere here on the forum, I think I posted it about a year ago or something like that.
  16. Fire Pinch, I was looking for this comparo: "I was thinking in calibrate both subs to, say, 100Hz so both read 100dB. Then go down in 1/3 or 1/6 interval to see how each behave, right down to 16Hz. Both need to be properly calibrated and in the same place to do this fairly" I think it would be good info for all members!
  17. "By the way, do you want all that I test my Tempest at the maximum volume at each test tones? Exemple, at 20 Hz, the maximum the tempest can go, at 25 Hz, etc... because If I do it that way, this will not indicate to you how flat is the bass in my room. I can do a test where I put the volume at a certain point and I dont touch it when I listen to different test tones. Its all like you want..." still looking for those numbers!!
  18. Done! Im ready to receive any updates to this thread... this is, hoping that you will remain on it!
  19. "i should have access to a great number of systems and I will do this test with them." Most excellent! keep us posted, when will that happen? I can suscribe to this topic to receive the data as soon as you get it!
  20. Justin thanks for the graphs, it is strange that none of them is able (following your graphs) to play anything below 50Hz or something like that. I mean, it drops like a stone 10dB lower than that as the frequency goes down. Do you have any other multimedia subs at hand? it would be really interesting to see a comparo between the Klipsch's and some Altec 641's, the logitech's and Megaworks...
  21. Hey Dustin nice work on that screen! Regarding the topic, the software is a bit complex, but once you learn to use it is an incredible tool to learn and design. I have a single tempest on a 210L (a bit more or less) sonotube, Its tunned to 21Hz because I wanted the flattest possible response. The sound of this beast has been favorable compared to subs costing as much as 3,000 bucks, by their very owners (some of them doesn't quite like this fact).
  22. Ah Accuton drivers, some of the best speakers I have listened in my life sports their speakers.
  23. Because uf the hight SPL numbers between the 30Hz-50Hz.
  24. Interesting graphs, I wonder why nobody (AFAIK) do that kind of study right now. I would like to read the entire paper, to really understand what is going on.
