  1. I gave up the blu ray audio and hdmi features when i sold/traded my onkyo 805, I thought I was going to be dissappointed with the sound quality, it was the opposite. The stage one did a much better job at producing sound then the 805.I also prefer the analog section in the stage one than anything i've ever heard before. As a couple others said, if you have to have the blu ray audio, get a player with analog outs , it'll run you about 400 bucks which in my book is much cheaper then 1200 +tax. The convience of the HDMI cable is nice but IMO has really screwed this whole HT hobby up. I would go with what ever sounds best to you in you most frequent listening environment. Even though I have a BR player I still find myself renting standard DVDs. So keep that in mind aswell, which suites your ears better with the media you will listen to the majority of the time, which in my case is still SDVD's. I don't not rent a movie because it's not in blu ray, if it's in awesome, if not the SDVD will suffice. I will upgrade again to obtain the newer audio codecs but it can wait and after experiencing what Hi end gear can provide I don't see myself upgrading in the pre/pro for awhile with or without HDMI switching, my tv has 4 HDMI inputs which is plenty of video for me. When the new Oppo player arrives I can get rid of some more junk and get the new codecs back.
  2. I found the crossover frequency, The RF 5s ar 2500 hZ and the RF 7 is 2200 Hz. If i was able to switch the tweeters and horns out would it be neccessary to switch xovers out as well? Or would it be ok since there would be no loss in frequency response. Dean??? Or should I just leave them alone?
  3. I enjoy the tweeter in my RC7 which is identical to that in the RF7 if I'm not mistaken. Are the crossovers on the RF5's and RF7's the same? Could/has anyone tried to trade the tweeter and horn out of the RF5's? would this be a waste of time?
  4. I think crossing mains over at 80Hz is good for HT, everything else accordingly usually 80Hz though. I change setting based on activities, 2 ch listening, I cross sub over at 55 Hz and set the Mains to "large" or "full range". When listening to Multi channel music, the front 3 are set to full range, and crossed over low again at about 55 Hz. For heavier/action packed movies I'll turn the fronts to large to enjoy extra punch. I change setting pretty much on a daily basis depending on activity, how the album was mixed, how the source is mixed. How I want things to sound, sometimes I like the bright in your face sound of a lead guitar, and a ripping trumpet, and others the mellow buuum of a double bass, and the relaxing sing of the low end of the piano. Depends on how you feel and what you like. Just my 2 cents.
  5. no, if i read it correctly. only LFE content is made available through the sub input.
  6. 1. Music - Guitar, Drums, Piano and Saxophone 2. Computers- programming and building them 3. reading - about audio, electronics and the physics behind them 4. Dogs- working with and training my dogs (boxers- 3 of them) 5. Listening to music 6. Looking for great deals online.
  7. I've seen the icon stuff at the big box store and immediately tried to remove the grills to get a peak. With no luck was I able to get them off, maybe I'm slow, I tried both speakers, I 'concur' with tommyboy, no removeable grills. This was a big turn off for me, I like to take the grills off my RF5s to clean them to keep them looking nice and pretty.
  8. just trying to get that post number up???.....I am.
  9. I recently sold my 805 for 425 locally, it was a great piece of equipment for HT, had plent of power but did not suite me fancy for 2ch listening. I bit the bullet and gave up the HDMI switching, new audio codecs and some other features. I thought I would miss out on the HDMI switching but I don't, my TV has 4 HDMI inputs so I use the TV's switching abilities which is relatively fast. As for the new HD audio formats, I miss them but still have the ability to get them via analog outputs so I will be back in that ball game shortly. If your primarily listening will be HT I think the Onkyo is a winner, if you do some serious 2ch listening IMO the Onkyo didn't add up. I've never had experience with any HT pioneer recievers only some older 2ch models which I think sounded good. I would shoot for an 805 vs an 806 if the video upscaling is not an issue, the 805 has a better amp section aswell as better DACs. The 805's upscaling performance is decent at best IMO.
  10. i was passive bi-amping for a while with my onkyo 805. I've since traded and no long bi-amp. I have them bi-wiried now, not sure if there's much difference but I had the wires hooked up already so I figured "why not". So i left them bi-wired with the new setup, sounds better than ever....I think most of it's the new components and not attributed to the bi-wire.
  11. ....I wish I knew what was going on......lost in my own world
  12. I'm waiting to see some more info on the new Oppo universal player, we'll wait and see. The StageOne seems to do a fantastic job wil the legacy formats so i can wait awhile to please my desires .......or maybe not, I don't seem to do very well at waiting.
  13. If you check the forums there's a pretty active thread about the emotiva gear going on now. From what I've read they make a good product at a price that's heard to beat. Whether or not you would benefit, it depends where you're looking to improve the sound. Is it overall quality of the sound, the low end, the mid range, the high end? Do you just want it to player louder? Dynamics from tiny quiet to BOOM Loud with out touching the dial? You may improve the the sound you may not. Think about what you are trying to achieve then ask the question.
  14. From what i've read when it comes to adding seperates it's about the processor more than the amp. For example you are going to get the same quality of sound from the onkyo almost regardless of what amp. Not to say that amps have no sound characteristic but the majority of the way the sound sounds is the processor. So if you like the onkyo's sound stick with the onkyo sound. If you want something different, which in my case, I was not satisfied with the sound of the onkyo, so I got a new setup. Adding a seperate amp may give you better dynamics but I don't think it will change the sound. just my 2cents
  15. After spending most of the day cleaning and rearranging equipment I finall got the Stage One and 2005 all hooked up. I did some quick calibrations and just sat back. This thing sound phenomenal in 2ch. I gave up alot of bells and whistles to get the stage one, I went from an Onkyo 805 ( which i was not please with it's 2 ch performance) to the Stage One. As one would hope, the Stage One IMO blows the onkyo out of the water in sound quality. What the Stage One lacks in features is made up for 10 fold in performance and quality. I don't have the remote so I have minimal experience with the listening modes other that 2ch, 5ch, DP Logic Movie, and Neo6: Movie. Can't seem to figure out how to change listening modes at the faceplate. Watched Babylon AD last night (First full movie) and the Stage One seemed to perform as well in 5.1 as it did in 2 ch. Low end is deep and authoratative on my RF5's which I felt was lacking in the Onky. The seperation between instrument and effects was much better than the onkyo. While watching the movie the transistion between speakers seemed flawless in comparison to the onkyo (don't know if the 1 inch measurements in distance made that big of a difference) with the lights out it seemed as if sounds where comming from outside the speakers which was really cool. I hadn't experienced that with the onkyo, when it came from the left it sound like the left speaker and the right and so forth. The StageOne seemed to put the noises "outside the box". The Analog inputs seem to sound better aswell. When using my PS3 to send audio digitally via toslink it sounded a bit bright. This was wierd because it seemed exactly opposite of the problem I had with the Onkyo. Next step is to get rid of the PS3 and get a blu ray player with analog outputs to check out the HD audio content on this baby. All in All i feel trading the onkyo 805 for the StageOne and 2005 combo was a great endeavor. -Stefan
  16. I have "The One" Harmony remote, I recently upgraded to an Aragon Stage One with no original remote so learning commands is out of the question. Anyone have any luck with the Stage One and Harmony remotes? I suppose I could buy a ProntoNeo, install the files learn them then send it back but don't really want to go through the hassel. I can control the Stage One but there are probably half of the commands missing. Thanks guys.
  17. HVN I may be in the market to sell my PS3, I love the thin but due tosome recent changes (loss of HDMI) i need a new BR player.

    Wanted

was out of town when this first came out, actually saw it in a movie theatre with the wife. Not a bad show, probably will rent t to check out the soundtrack again.
  19. Thanks Guys, any one have a pair of WDST type speakers and floorstanders wired in series with an A/B speaker selector so that you could switch for music and movies?Using both speaker types as "surrounds" of course, but changing with the "flick of a switch".
  20. Agree with DrWho and John, I didn't know about the distance equation as far as the loss of 6dB of SPL per 1 meter. Thanks, always learning new stuff, and usually enjoying the trials and errors.
  21. Thanks Rich, I mostly listen to music in 2ch, and was afraid of the localization of the RF5s as surrounds. I can get the RF5 for cheaper than I can sell the RS 7s for that's what has me going.....HUH? I would only purchase after selling the RSs as I think the wife is tired of me spending money. I just bought the RS7's, an RC7 , an Aragon Stage One and an Aragon 2005. So i don't want to purchase them outright.
  22. There's some really good stuff there Colin, Thanks, will give me plenty to read.
  23. Have to agree, good flick, Blu Ray was checked out at my local blocbuster so I had to settle for SDVD. I wish some new concepts for movies would come out. Eagle Eye, was too much Asimov's "I, Robot" for me. Don't get me wrong, it was a good flick just seemed like the premise was taken from there.
