  1. I've played for nearly 50 years. Initially took lessons from a local musician who taught out of his garage (2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade). Learned to play by ear and then read music. Never learned music theory while taking those initial introduction lessons. Just learned songs. 45 years later I took a few more lessons from a local professional who had toured with some nationally known bands of the 70/80's and currently I just pull Guitar tabs off the internet for any song I want to learn. For my 55th Birthday, I bought myself a long awaited semi-hollow body. Guitar playing can have substantial health benefits as it can be a form of meditation and an effective stress reliever. My nephew recently took up Guitar and he also began with lessons with a local musician. Often, you can find music majors locally (either High School or College) that teach as part of getting a few funds for their education. I think there are many specific benefits to signing up for lessons once a week or so. Whether your interest is chords, picking, or theory, a teacher can tailor a schedule so you get the most for what you are looking for. 3 months (12 weeks) should get you the basics down. Equipment also matters, meaning a "playable" neck (for your hand size) will make learning easier and faster. Best of luck. Once you get a few basic lessons down, then you can self learn all you want. The foundation is the key in my view and a good teacher helps establish that base quickly. If you already have a guitar and have already decided that you want to learn via the internet, then watch a few youtube tutorials and see who makes the most sense to you. I suspect you will get a little from several and combine them.
  2. Mostly news coverage in the evenings and maybe a program or two. Once a month or so (more in winter) a DVD movie is shown. CD's get a casual listen maybe a couple times a month. Most intense music sessions are due to a particular catalyst that specifically drives a particular meditation need - that only tunes can help you through.
  3. Arturo Fuente's are my cigar of choice. Typically something in the $5-8 range. My Humidor has roughly 20 cigars (mostly Arturo's) including one Opus X and a pre-ban Cuban I picked up at a "Cigar Night" and couple years back. Was a long time pipe smoker and still have a good collection of Savinelli's (incl Autograph straight grains), Peterson's, a Parker Calabash, carved Merschums, Ben Wades and more. Some have never had a bowl lit in them. Although I enjoy many beverages my most recent focus has been on Bourban's with Evan Williams being my down right favorite. One can spend some good coin on expensive Bourban but I simply haven't found any I like better than a glass of ice filled 3/4's with Evan Williams and add a splash of water. Man that's good. Maple and vanilla notes with just a hint of orange - all while giving a "good bite" on the tongue. Next best would be either Jim Beam Black or even a Tennesee - Gentleman Jack. Music tastes are pretty varied but sax and guitar are probably my favorites on the Legend KLF's. 3rd Force, Mindy Abair, Govi, etc.
  4. Getting "religion" sometimes even is about religion - but it also is a descriptive phrase regarding the "on fire" emotion one feels when they are so filled with believing in something (photography gear, automobiles, music instrument makers, speakers, etc) that they exhibit the preaching behaviour of newly "saved" souls. Personally I like reading from those that are passionate about their beliefs and want to know their reasoning behind their excitement. I think KLF legend series 20's are about as good as it gets for music - but I still hope to listen to LaScallas or KHorns someday. Same for Nikon cameras and lenses - but I know that Canon has taken some award winning photographs. I'm partial to Harley's - but I know BMW makes a pretty nice motorcycle. [H][Y]
  5. Nikon shooter here as well. Began in High School (early 70's) as a yearbook Fotog. Had a couple 6006's with a 50mm f/1.8, a 28-70 and a 75-300. Sold those and have upgraded a bit. Have a D70 and just bought a D700 Fx + MB D10 grip. Speedlights are an SB600 and a third party for Nikon I don't recall. Lenses are a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D, Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D, Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D, Nikkor 24-85mm F/2.8-4D and a Sigma EX 50-500 (mounted on the D70 for an effective focal length of 75-750 in the Dx format). My Tripod is a Bogen Manfrotto as is my mono-pod. All my bodies and lenses have QR plates mating up with my heads. The Nikkor 17-35 is a truly wonderful lens. Sunsets are simply stunning. I most appreciate the SB600's zoom mating with the Nikkor 24-85 as a walk around general purpose set up. The Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 for portraits is legendary. Fast and mated with the D700 for low light, it is spectacular. For wildlife, the Sigma Ex can reach out and get that shot. Have many very nice animal captures in my portfolio.
  6. First of all - Congratulations on your system and finding Klispch. Your Legend series set up is very nice. as an aside - I have an Oak KLF-C7 (my lone rear) that I would let go, if you decided to move your 10's to rears as in 7.1. That would give you 30 mains, 20 surrounds, and 10's as rears - with the matching C7 center. email me if that is of any interest to you.
  7. I have both Klispch and Polk systems now. Until my recent acquisition of my KLF-30 mains (moving my 20's to surround duty), my surrounds were Polk Monitor 70's and I liked it very much. Personally - if I'd never heard KLF's then I likely would have been very happy with my Monitors. I began life with a pair of Fisher towers from the 70's and replaced them with Bose to be replaced with Polk and Klipsch. I think Polk is rated below Klipsch and their efficiency ratings are less. My Polk Monitor 70's have front firing ports while my KLF's have rear ports. The Polks are a bit smaller and thus more useable in more room sizes - however I don't think there is a better sounding Music speaker than Klipsch - althouh for movies I was quite happy with the Polks as surrounds mated with my KLF-20 mains at the time. As a comparison, I presently have over $3000 in my Klipsch (used) system and barely $1600 in the Polk (new and factory refurbished) - including receivers. I enjoy my Legend KLF's very very much and am grateful I found them. But I think a lot of people (as in "john Q public") would be pretty happy listening to my Polk set up for the price point.
  8. I can't comment on the KSF's but you'll truly love a pair of KLF-20's if you ever get them. Although I'm admittedly biased, I think they are the best speaker in the Legend series and very worthy of having. 2 channel simply rocks with KLF's.
  9. 1. I think you are on the right track starting with 2 speakers. You can always run "phantom or ghost" and split the center channel for the time being. 2. Towers typically will provide more natural base - due to cabinet design - than bookshelfs, so you can forego a sub for a while. 3. Receivers change so much and so fast that in 5 years you'll likely want to upgrade it anyway. Who knows how many HDMI ports you'll want or even if HDMI will be the choice then. (I'm still running a tube TV and gold plated RGB cables [H]) 4. A solid receiver with a pair of decent towers would be a good first step. Simply decide which Klipsch system your ears like, then begin building that system. A basic set of towers could easily work now, be moved to surrounds later and rears (in a 7.1) even later. Upgradeitis is an affliction I've suffered from for some time now - ever since my first set of Bose 201's, then Polk Monitor 70's, then Klispch KLF-20's and finally now KLF-30's. WOW!!
  10. Thanks. [H] Saxaphone on CD's just sparkles!! I'm sure I have not even touched on the potential of these KLF's and am a long way from understanding the benefits of Crites components, bi-amp, pre amp, or extra watts per channel power. However - I just marvel at how wonderful the music is. Jazz (Mindy Abair, Brian Culbertson), Country (Smoke rings in the Dark - Gary Allan, Chris Isaacs, Dwight Yokam, Vince Gill), New Age guitarists (Govi, Chris Spheris, Jesse Cook), and Contemporary international (Clannad) are a delight to hear on this system. Next up for trial is a couple of DVD's to get the juices flowing...maybe Dark Night [H] ...still running a very old 32" tube Sony Wega that is heavier than the speakers...
  11. I concur with those saying plan extra wire. 15 years ago I had my house built and strung wires from the loft to the basement. Have moved speakers 3 times and ultimately had to splice [] due to not enough length. Have extra. It is unkown what you may want to do in 10 or 20 years.
  12. Had been running KLF-20's as mains for several years with a pair of Polk Monitor 70's as surrounds. This past weekend I obtained a pair of KLF-30's to serve as mains and moved the KLF-20's to surround duty. Really sounds nice. Didn't realize the bass was so full on the 30's. Didn't recall that when I was demo-ing my 20's years ago. Anyway - with a full complement of timbre matched speakers, I must say it is a truly enjoyable experience. Here's to all the Legend Heads out there.[H]
  13. I am not familiar with the RTiA9's but do very much like my Monitor 70's as surrounds. Crisp and clean notes. I have recently attempted to buy a pair of LaScala's but could not meet the asking price. $500 is worth a listen. Doubtful these would stand with the LaScala's but I suspect they sound very good for the asking price. http://www.audioreview.com/mfr/polk-audio/floorstanding-speakers/mpl_1381_1594crx.aspx
  14. Many feel that surrounds and rears are less important to "match" than the front mains and center. I like my present set up very much. You can see from my signature that my surrounds are a non-Klipsch brand. However, I think speakers that are matched, have a much better chance of delivering a satisfactory sound for most people.
  15. I use a Yahama RX-V663. Not sure what the current models are as I am not looking to change. Seem to remember it being in the 4-500 dollar range when I bought it a couple of years ago. It has either 3 or 4 HDMI connection ports. It is 7.1 compatible but I ran mine in 5.1 until I bought my second KLF-C7 to use as a lone rear. If you plan to use your KLF-20's/30's as mains then I strongly recommend a KLF-C7 as a center channel. Some say it is one of the best center channels Klipsch made.
  16. Please recap the process of getting the tweeters from the cabinet and to Bob. Removal steps. Packagiing. Shipping. Thanks.
  17. http://www.amazon.com/TryMe-Cajun-Sunshine-Pepper-Sauce/dp/B0005ZYSHQ Cajun Sunshine is my all time favorite Hot Sauce. Typically find it locally for around $3 a bottle. I take it to resturants when I eat out. On Omlettes, fried potatoes, anything with tomato sauce (goulash, chili, pizza, Lasagna, Spaghetti) it is truly wonderful. I add some to my home made BBQ suace while cooking it. Simply tasty. A couple things I really like about this sauce...1). it contains seeds and flakes of Cayenne peppers and 2). it is a milder more flavorful sauce compared to Tobasco or Franks. It can be HOT if you really pour it on, but the temperature is easily controlled by simply adding less or more for your particular heat preference. All whom I have introduced this to have become fans. The Try Me brand has many others including an Habenero Sunshine and Tiger Sauce if your flavor profile prefers these. The 9 reviews give it 5 stars and I completely agree.
  18. No matter how good a woman looks - [Y] There is a guy out there somewhere who is tired of putting up with her sh!t [^o)]
  19. KLF 20's are pretty darn sweet. Add a C7 center for $300 to complete the front sound stage and put just about anything in back. I certainly enjoy mine.
  20. Thanks for the reply. From what I believe you are saying is that nixing the idea of adding this to the HT group would be good. Fair enough - wasn't that strong of an interest. Much more interested in using these as some kind of a PA. I would need a type of reverb to add depth to vocals - a stomp box might suffice. I acquired a used 40 watt Radio Shack amp (free) but haven't hooked it up yet. Kind of hoping someone like you could offer up some suggestions. It might be that these items just get sold off or traded for other more appropriate gear - but due to their price (free), if they could work, it would be nice to do so. I currently have a 2 guitar set up with a few effects pedals feeding an old Sound City Concord amplifier using 2 12" Fanes and single channel reverb. Extremely clean sound. Great tubes and LOUD for a 30 watt amp. Playing a wide variety of music but mostly surf, rockabilly, and some country and blues with a little Santanna type rock thrown in on the Hagstrom semi-hollow. The Ovation Legend primarily is used for Folk type ballads and this is where the vocals would fit in. I used to use the Sound City as both guitar amp and PA but with the effects pedals feeding the Guitar amp - I was seeing these new Electro Voice speakers as a possible PA option. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated - even if your thoughts were to scratch the project.
  21. I have just acquired a pair of Electro-Voice 100 Studio Monitor speakers (for free). Cabinets are in great shape and the woofers and tweeters are fine. Not sure what to do with them. I would like to use them in a PA set up for vocals but I need a amp. Any suggestions? Or I could use them as rears in a 7.1 and replace my lone KLF-C7 with these? I realize this is a Klipsch forum but you guys are the most knowledgeable group I know about these kinds of things. http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/STARINMANUALS/Bosch%20-%20EV/Sentry%20100A.pdf
  22. Why do you use that setting? On most receivers 7 channel stereo will downmix a surround signal into 2 channels and then re-mix it so that all the left speakers play the same thing and all the right speakers play the same thing. To get discrete surround sound effects you have to use Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. I have defaulted to that setting primarily due to the "fullness" I sense from my viewing position. In movies like Dark Knight, Ronin, King Arthur, Waterworld, Desperado, Avatar, Casino Royale, Last of the Mohicans, etc the room fills completely with the sound. I get transition accross the room. In Sci-Fi mode, sometimes the center channel can come across as a bit weak (and that is with a KLF C7 center). I seem to prefer some volume from all speakers rather than the individual sounds from select speakers when that sound is delivered to it. Likely not very purist though.
  23. I actually like the TV atop the center channel speaker - given the speaker cabinet will support the weight. If not an elongated inverted "U" shape stand can be fabricated from wood to cover your speaker and support the TV base. What is particularly nice about this set up is the direct radiance of the center channel from the midpoint of the screen.
