  1. Seems there ain't nothin' but iron in mine. Twin toroidal transformers plus a shedload of heavy 'other' stuff.

    Sub advice

As you've already mentioned, a DD-12 would be a good choice. Expensive, but good. It's very hard for anything but a bass horn to keep up with the low distortion levels provided by the DD series. For the record, I run a DD-18 with Cornwall IIIs and Heresy IIIs.

Another spot to check for horn loaded sub designs is here: http://www.decware.com/newsite/speakers.html
  4. When it comes to pain, I highly recommend 'ines', pronounced 'eenes'. Morphine. Pethidine. ...and of course, Scotchine..........

  6. Got a similar shock with my NAD T785. Yours is about 5 pounds lighter. Nowhere near as grunty as the NAD but given the weight the Onkyo's weight bodes well for general build quality.
  7. I think you need to relax. A little surprise is in order....... []
  8. Hah. I passed on Thought Chamber's album to a friend. This friend is seriously into metal with approximately 10,000 metal CDs. Yes, 10,000. He's hard to please but he likes it. He's ordered his own copy. That's how much he likes it. Not a fan of the vocals, like me, but thinks the album is a very good example of prog metal, with about 50% metal 'crunch' and 50% prog.
  9. There must be more out there. Don't people like FREE?
  10. There is the other conclusion that could have been reached: the Nordost was just average and the Monster total crap.
  11. Nah. He thought it was a drive through supermarket.
  12. If you utilise the same level of diligence as you applied a mere pair of screws then I'd suggest 'bomb proof' might be the term to use when describing how you will pack a speaker for a customer.
  13. 120Hz capability is about as useful as a glass door on a toilet. Nice on the spec sheet. Useless in the real world.
  14. The blue ones are the best. Closely followed by the red ones, then the green ones and purple ones. Don't even think about the white ones.
  15. Well, I would use a NAD T785 but that's simply because that's what I've got. Stick with what you have for the time being. 40 watts per channel in stereo mode will provide plenty of power until you research further. They are 99dB sensitivity. You can quite adequately run them on a pretty low powered amp.
  16. I don't know what the old Cornwalls are like but I run 2 x Cornwall IIIs for L+R and three Heresy IIIs for center and surrounds. I can't tell the difference between the Heresy III and the Cornwall III when sound pans from L to R across the center channel. Perfect timbre match to my ear.
  17. I'm not being caustic, simply requiring justification for the entirely subjective interpretation of the question's terminolgy. Just because I don't blindly take someone's opinion as gospel doesn't mean I'm argumentative. Sorry, but if you cannot actually calibrate the unit to the level you suggest, 0dB will still be shown on the receiver. There will be some receivers that no matter what they are connected to will not produce the calibrated level 105dB 'THX Reference Level'. Hence, are you arguing that those receiver's manufacturers are being deliberately deceptive; or willing to admit that 0dB on the receiver is an entirely arbitrary point on a scale which is selected by the manufacturer? Which leads back to the original premise that your assumption as to the OP's terminology may be incorrect, as may be mine, but to deny the possibility of this would be somewhat pretentious.
  18. Whatever is done, one must not compromise one of the 'laws' of the web: If it doesn't load fast it doesn't get seen. This means no Flash, no sound and no high KB imagery on upper level pages.
  19. No, they were surly, aggressive and totally non diplomatic little things. They did arrive in tape, though.
