Some old Model4000s orignally only accepted a RF signal (but that can be fixed with any easy mod: http://www.carltonbale.com/dish/4000/ ) and some came with all the hardware installed but with the IR stuff turned off. Mine didn't have the hardware so I did the upfit and then turned IR on, and now it works with universal IR remotes! All the newer DISH units that came with RF remotes should also accept IR signals!
  2. I second Diehard's thoughts. Find you some other KGs for the rears and a KV center channel speaker (except for the KV4 which isn't for the KG series). Or if you get lucky you might find a lone KG4 that you can re-box to use as a center channel speakers (as that would the best possible setup). I've bought all my Klipsch speakers via eBay. It's fairly safe as long as you are careful -- and you can get some good deals as long as you are patient!
  3. quote: Originally posted by polymon: Jeff is correct in stating the KV-2/3 were made as matching centers, they've been out of production for years. I concurr with both polymon and jeff, but the fact that they have been out of production for years doesn't really make them that hard to get! As long as you are a little patient, you can get a KV2/3 via eBay -- often for a good price. I've purchased all my Klipsch speakers using eBay (but you do have to be cautious).
  4. quote: Originally posted by polymon: Klipsch insider's opinion: Go with a KLF-C7!! it's the best match for effiency, voice matching (how similar it sounds to the L/R) and it's probably available at a pretty reasonable price. RC-3 will work well, too, (better than a KV-3, methinks!) but the C7 is the ideal way to go. GOOD LUCK! NO NO NO, a RC-3 will not work better than a KV-3! Where do you get your info or are you just guessing? Even BobG admited (about a year or so ago -- I wish we had the archived messages) that a KV-3 would be superior to an RC-3 for a center to match the KG series!! Again, the the KV-3 was made to be a center match for the larger KG series! The C7 would play a little deeper beacuse of the larger woofers but it's probably not the best voice-match. Since the C7 is made for the legend series (which isn't far from the old KG series) it would be a lot more acceptable and a lot better than a RC-3 -- but the KV-3 would be the best voice match (other than using a "main" speaker that uses K-85-K). Polymon, you're no Klipsch insider IMHO!
  5. quote: Originally posted by sphaerio: I was wondering what a good match for my 5.5s is. I would not go with with a RC3. The KV3 was made by Klipsch to be the matching center for the KG5.5s. You can do one better but using any speaker that's uses the same tweeter as the KG5.5 uses (like a KG4.2, etc). You should, like t-man said, checkout this thread: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/001933.html
  6. quote: Originally posted by maxspivak: What do you guys think of the KG2 as a center matched with my KG 4.2's? Good match or continue searching/waiting for KG 2.2? The KG2 uses the same tweeter as the KV1, but I would get a KV3 (or maybe a KV2) instead. Several KV models are currently listed on eBay ( http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&pb=&maxRecordsPerPage=100&ebaytag1=ebayreg&category0=293&ht=1&query=klip*+KV* ). These KV models use dual woofers so they'd likely "keep up" better with your 10inch woofer in the KG4.2s (than KG2 would).
  7. maxspivak, It sounds like you are handy (since you have a DYI screen) so you could easily build a new enclosure for a 4.2 (or 5.5 for that matter) that would be less than 1 foot. My KG4.2 is currently just laying on it's side -- but a new box is coming right after the new TV (which will likely be a 55" Mitsubishi or 56" Toshiba). Good luck!!
  8. quote: Originally posted by forresthump: to t-man's defence, 6.1 does imply only 1 rear center channel. 2 rear centers is what they call 7.1 though u can still only get at most 6.1 discrete channels w/ f.e. DTS-ES All this is really a little confusing I guess. In reality I was talking about Surround EX which is sometimes (incorrectly) refered to as 6.1. Surround EX uses a matrixed rear center so it's not a true discrete 6.1 format. Surround EX does indeed spec two rear speakers. From http://www.thx.com/consumer_products/surround_ex.html (with bold & italic added): "Surround EX is a process that decodes a back surround signal from the left and right surround channels on specially encoded DVD movie releases." ... "For optimum results, THX recommends use of two THX Ultra certified dipole speakers for the back surrounds. However, allowing for customer preference, a pair of direct radiating speakers can also be used for the back surrounds under a new THX specification."

FYI, the single KG4.2 I purchased was already video shielded. I fully expected that it would not be but was pleasantly surprised when I opened it up and found both drivers already had bucking magnets! I don't know if I got lucky or if all KG4.2s come that way though. quote: Originally posted by t-man: Get a single one for yourself, or a pair (would be easier to find), and sell the one you don't need, or save for 6.1 rear center channel. I believe the 6.1 spec calls for two center rear speakers instead of just one. quote: Originally posted by t-man: I simply love the sound of these as centers. No need to get a big 'ol 4.2. Why not use a big ol' KG4.2 if you have the room? Having the exact same horn in all three front speakers would be the optimum setup after all! 10. Yo speedbump, You need to go to this forum to get some really good Mits info: http://www.HomeTheaterSpot.Com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=10 !!
  11. I also have KG5.5s and am using a single KG4.2 as my center since it uses the same tweeter as my KG5.5s. The following speakers use the same tweeter: KG5.5, KG4.5, KG5.2, and KG4.2. Klipsch made the KV3 and KV2 to match our speakers, but I wanted something a little better!
  12. I have a pair of KG5.5s (which uses the same tweeter as the KG4.2s) and I used to use a KV3. It's a real good match (and would be for you too) -- but I wanted a full range center so I found a single KG4.2 on eBay and bought it. Right now it's laying on it's side underneath my TV, but I will be building a new box soon (after I get my new RPTV) so the tweeter will be oriented properly.
  13. bobw235, To better your home theater experience, you need to foucs on replacing that RC-3 with a center channel speaker that truely matches your KG2s (and thus the KG1.2s)!! Find yourself a KV2 or better yet a KV3 to replace that poor-mathcing RC-3. In a pinch you can go with a KV1 (but note a KV4 will NOT be a good match). If you watch around here and eBay you should be able to pick up a used KV center with ease. Numerous past posts here, which are now gone when they recently deleted the old posts, support my claim that the RC-3 is a less than good match for the KG series! Ask around and you'll see. On the other hand a KV2 or KV3 would be an ideal match -- and having your three front speakers match is VERY crucial to achieveing a good home theater experience (much more so than worrying about rear speakers)! Oh, I concur with t-man that your current rear speakers are a good match especially for listening to discrete surround (like DD5.1 and DTS soundtracks)!

  15. I have one more KG4 question: 1) The dimensions I have for the KG4 are 24.25"x15.75" x10.75". Are these the measurements with or without the little riser stand that comes with the speakers (that acutall not part of the enclosure)? I need the mesurements without the riser. If someone with a set of KG4s (and a tape measure) could help me out I'd really appreciated it! This message has been edited by STL on 05-30-2001 at 11:46 AM

I am not aware of any VHS tapes that offer a 5.1 audio track! I thought the best a VHS tape could do was Dolby ProLogic which is only 4 (matrixed) channels. Was this a mistake or did you really mean what you said?
  17. quote: Originally posted by BobG: Off the top of my head, I do not know the frequency to which the PR is tuned on that speaker. Contact Trey at our technical support dept. for the info. I will mention that you'll have a VERY long port tube as a replacement for the PR. Also, do not use a narrow diameter tube as that results in poor dynamics and increased bass distortion. Let us know how the project turns out. Hmmm, long port length ehh? My idea might not work then!! I was going to use a port diameter around 3-4" with a curved outlet to help reduce port noise. Thanks for the Trey tip, I've talked with him before and he's a good resource! I'll drop him an email. I might have to give up on venting the enclosure and try a sealed box. I have the K-8-K specs so I'll have to crunch the numbers and see if that woofer is even remotely compatible with a closed box. I'll keep everyone update! Thanks!!
  18. Sorry Kman, but a KV4 would not be a good match for him. I also used to think the KV4 would be a good match for the KG series (and my KG5.5s) then BobG set me straight. I cannot remember what speakers that KV4 matches, but it's not the KG series!
  19. mwiener, what did you end up doing? I think I am in the same as you (unless you've found something).
  20. quote: Originally posted by JoeorLaurie: I have a pair of KG 4.5 speakers in the front and KSB1.1 speakers in the back with a KV-1 in the center. I'd like to upgrade the 1.1s and maybe the KV-1 (I think it fell off the entertainment center and has a very sloppy sound). Any suggetsions? I've checked out the suggestion under Home Audiom but I'm wondering if there are any other possibilities. Unless that chart (that BobG spoke of) has changed, then is does NOT tell you the REAL proper match. It only suggest what speaker still currently in production that might be the "best compromise". The proper center for your KG4.5s is a KV3 (or a KV2). For rears I would suggest just about anything in the KG series. Another pair of KG4.5s would be optimal (if you using DD5.1 or DTS surround), but like most people you probably don't have the room. I've seen some KG3.5s on eBay or you might look for some KG2 (or 2.5s). Good luck!
  21. quote: Originally posted by dougdrake: The 4 and the 4.2 use a passive radiator-type enclosure with a drone woofer on the back. One the KG4.2 the PR is on the front.
  22. Basically the KG4.2 is vented using a passive radiator, while the KG4.5 is vented using a port. Both techniques get very close to the same results. Passive raidators are a little more expensive and harder to tune (but can sound a little better) so cost is probably why Klispch changed their design.
  23. What freq is that Passive Radiator on the KG4s tuned to? The reason I ask is because I purchase all the innards (the drivers and xovers) from a pair of KG4s who enclosures had been ruined (by severe water damage). I already checked out the parts and they are all fine! Oh back to the point, I am planning on building some new enclosures for these parts, but I cannot use the PR so I want to replace it with a port (since ports and PRs do almost the exact same thing). These enclosures will be placed into some built-in bookcases (in the back of my room) so I cannot place the PR on the back of the speakers (and there isn't any place else that it will fit). I do plan to make the enclosure volume of the new boxes about the same as the original boxes. I'm hoping someone there a Klipsch can chime in, but if not then anyone with an originally boxed KG4 could do a quick test for me. You will need a freq. generator or a test CD (like http://www.autosound2000.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=CD101 ) and a voltmeter or ohm meter. If someone out there has the speaker(s) and the equipment (and the time) please respond!
  24. quote: Originally posted by HornEd: As ... theory may sell speakers... but its ears that make them keepers. :ears (oops, they don't have that smiley yet!) HornEd I guess I need to do that. I can see how using a phantom center for the front setup would be less than a 3 speaker setup, but when it comes to the rear I just cannot see how it's really needed. Heck, human ears are built to primarily gather sounds from in front; I would think people would have a hard time determining the presence rear center speaker in a blind test. Having said that, I will go listen to a setup just to see how it sounds, but I wonder if these 6.1 soundtracks are adding something more (than just additional rear center information) that may be clouding the issue. Right now I still feel 6.1 is more of just a marketing/sales ploy.
  25. quote: Originally posted by Jim Cornell: The ports after the extension, really made the bass like cornwalls!! Well I measured my KG5.5s to determine the actual "stock" port size and calculated enclosure volume (based on adjustments from external measurements). I ran those numbers; the original port frequency was about 35Hz and your 4inch extension made it change to about 29Hz. Without the woofer specs I cannot actually determine how that affects the speaker's frequency response (but I could make the above determination because port frequency is only based on port diameter, port length, and enclosure volume -- it's independent of the driver believe it or not). It could be that Klipsch ported these speakers on the high (frequency) side to make them more efficient and to give them a good punchy mid-bass. If that's the case, then your lowering their porting frequency by 6Hz could be a good thing -- or maybe your change just sounds good to you simply because of personal preference.
