  1. He agreed to hold them for me since we are both travelling this week. He seemed to be happy that I already own a pair of KLF20s and know the breed. I offered to paypal him a deposit to hold the purchase and he said it wasn't necessary. I will post up the result.
  2. Picking them up next week. AND a KLF C7! Fingers crossed....over and over and over. []
  3. $695?????? Seems high to me. But then again, I am cheap!
  4. Not much love for Carver stuff here but if you're looking for cheap horsepower... My CFs sounded great before, now they positively stomp with 200wpc.
  5. Slap me Five, JackMoeManny!! Welcome. Hoist a few and chill.
  6. The reason I wrote that is the gentleman promised to hold it for me, but until that mother was in my hot little hand I wasn't counting on it! He told me that he had been bombarded with emails. I responded to him less than 20 mins after he posted the ad at eleven PM. It's definitely a keeper and after just minor cleaning sounds great. Eventually its going out for refurb. Right now its powering Fortes in my bedroom.
  7. Cryptic notations inside lead me to conclude that somebody has been in there a time or two. 1970 and 74 in fact. I popped the case tonight and tried to sweep away the thickest of the dust and crud. There is no evidence of fire, so I guess that's a good thing. [] I cleaned the pots with detox and the receiver is now silent with the exception of the stereo / reverse channel switch. I never use it, so I'm happy with the result. It's very very quiet. I like. I spent some time tonight looking at concluded eBay auctions. I've got a coprophagous grin on my face!
  8. ...To answer the above question. No harm at all go for it. The immediate harm is already done.... Craig, can you be more specific in regarding the quote above? Am I harming the unit by using it? Gents, I received the unit yesterday. He said that he had been getting bombarded with responses to his ad. Lucky me, eh? Here's what I have found so far; 1. It's filthy. My guess is that it was in a kitchen since there is crud around the knobs. 2. It was last used one year ago and has been in the closet ever since. Turns out the Misses wanted to listen to Rush Limbaugh on AM, so she talked the old guy into buying her something more modern! THANKS RUSH! I never liked the guy till yesterday. 3. He bought it new. He maintained that it's never been serviced, but it has had tubes replaced. I suppose that means he did it himself and the unit was never gone over by a tech. However, the guy was probably in his late 70s so there may have been episodes which he doesn't remember. 4. There is a fairly significant amount of noise present when using the VOL pot. The R channel is noisy but settles down once you let go. The L channel is worse, but every now and then it settles down and the unit is QUIET. I was listening to some classical on the tuner this morning and I was very pleased. I have tried 5 different receivers in my room and only two (this one and my old Sansui G-5700) pick up the station without a bunch of accompanying noise. 5. There is also a bit of noise present unless the tuning knob is "just so". Ditto the FM MPX detent on the input selector. All other switches and pots are silent. 6. Hooked up to a pair of Heresey I's and it sounds great. I think that a can of Detox [] will go a long way to quieting the Volume pot, and I may try that at some point. Can anyone tell me how the case is attached? Is it through the screws in the feet? I'm not going to go nuts, but I would like to try and clean it up a bit. I am fairly certain that I'm going to keep it and have it restored. Thanks for the kind words and advice.
  9. ...and hope to take delivery this afternoon of a.......drum roll please.............Fisher 500B. This is my first foray into tube gear, needless to say I'm anxious to hear it. I found it on Craigslist. It's got a walnut case and original manual. The AD mentions that it still works fine. I have had deals fall through at the last minute before, so I won't hold my breath. From all that I have read, old tube stuff needs significant attention to optimize its sound and to prevent it from setting the domo ablaze. But if he's still using it, what's the harm in my hooking it up? I have no idea when it was last inspected or serviced, but from the looks of the (poor quality) picture, its not pristine. Here's a nice bonus.....Thirty bucks! I'll try and find out when it was last serviced and any other history. It's tubes listed are (7)12AX7, (4)6AU6, 6AQ8, (2)12AT7, (4)7591. I'll try and post a pic when (if) I get it home.
  10. In engines, bank accounts, boats and speakers, there's no replacement for displacement! []
  11. Thumbs up on the Niles SPK-1. I'm running two now with one on the shelf for standby. I picked up two on CL for 20 bucks!
  12. Obviously, their condition and finish will have a huge impact on the price. Recently, there was a pair of 30s in a gorgeous quarter sawn Mahogany that commanded top dollar. I'd open the wallet WIDE for a set of those in mint cond. But, deals can be had on black satin, particularly if they're less than pristine. They way I look at it, they're BIG speakers and their appearance is more important than say, a set of Heresey's which can more easily be hidden amongst the furniture. As a result, the way they look is very important to me. Your location will drive the prices up as well. Whatever you end up paying, they will be worth it and you'll be glad you bought them. Best luck!
  13. I've got a set of CF3s and had some initial set up issues as well. I received lots of help and advice from the smart and well heeled guys on this site who have an amazing amount of experience and knowledge. Thanks my homies! My first attempt was with a mediocre Sony HT receiver. This was unsat. Then, I changed to an old Pioneer SA9100 integrated amp that my brother had in storage. Big smile! The SONY was relatively high power but you could have fooled me. The pioneer is probably 35 years old and about 80wpc. Those big boxes like big power and the speakers sounded MUCH better. I cannot speak to their efficiency but from what I understand, they aren't. They can't be compared with the big Heritage stuff. I then added even more power (200 wpc) and they sounded even better. I can't comment on the Outlaw as I know bupkis about it, but I would think that an amp with that quality and reputation would sound great. Good luck with the speakers and electrons. And as previously mentioned, signal source quality is very important. I reburned 1000 CDs to create lossless files and run them through a DAC. Absent that, they sounded thin and lousy. The actual disc was the way to go. I think that some recordings just don't work well with these speakers, even CDs. But when you find the ones that do, you'll be very pleased. When mine are turned up to about the 10 o'clock position, no one in the room can hear anything else, and at 11 you can't even hear yourself think. I've never had them past about 11. I think my neighbors call the cops at about the 10:30 position. The rate of increase is not linear. It's exponential, like the richter scale.
  14. I picked up a pair of Black Forte II's for $100 bucks but was unable to audition them. I figured at that price, what the hell? Unfortunately it turns out that one of them is ill. One woofer has an annoying anomaly. While not constant, on some pieces and at certain volume it buzzes. Bummer. These speakers really tie the room together. Klipsch sells a replacment but being the cheap (and green) sort that I am, I would consider harvesting a used one. So, if anyones got one, I am interested. Shipping would be to 23455, Virginia.
  15. Those mothers are stunning. I want! Too bad you're so far away. That trip would eat up several hundred bucks and at least two days. Good luck with the sale, should be a no brainer for anyone close.
  16. Not the thrift store, but Craigslist. One pair of 1992 Forte IIs for the princely sum of 100 US dollars. Black. The grills / badges are perfect. The cabs are in good, not excellent shape with one or two minor dings on the bottom corners of the risers and a few marks here and there. I'd say an easy 8 out of 10. The passives are fine and all drivers cooking nicely as I type this. 100 bucks! What's not to like? []
  17. Forgive my ignorance, but are you saying that you're a tub guy now and have forsworn taking showers exclusively? Or are you now a tuber...a potato? Is that correct? In either event, congrats on the score and enjoy. I am just a lowly SS puke and probably destined to a lifetime of cold and lifeless Stainless Steel.
  18. One of my pastimes is hoisting late at night while listening to Pandora. I've got several different genre stations and another half dozen specialty stations. As a result, its easy to kill a few hours listening to and searching for new music. The best/worst thing is that they link everything they play to Amazon. I have "one click buy" on my AMZN account. I continually find CD's in my mail box. Most of them are great, but every once in a while I have to wonder what I was thinking (or how much was I drinking!)
  19. GODWHACKER - Steely Dan GET UP OFF THAT THING - James Brown TUFF ENUF - Fabulous Thunderbirds I WONT DANCE - Sinatra with Count Basie 1963. The first short sax bit blows them away....the dude is IN THE ROOM. GOOD MORNING AZTLAN - Los Lobos BLOW AT HIGH DOUGH - The Tragically Hip MAN WITH A HORN - Scott Hamilton BLOOZE - Peter Frampton I could go on for hours.............
