  1. the captivator is also $1500 without the amp. $2500 with the amp. And that's source direct... MSRP is $3600. edit: just realized he listed the captivator 1000. didn't realize there was a different model.
  2. im going between 25-30ft with 18ga wire without any issue. it was a bunch of cat6 cable given to me. to be fair, the techflexx, cable pants, and banana plugs i added DO make it sound like a million bucks and certainly looks better than a bunch of geek cables.
  3. What movie are you watching? I think you are making this waaaaay more difficult than you should. Regardless of what speaker you have, if you are listening at ear bleeding levels, you will get ear fatigue. I tend to listen to music and HT at pretty loud volumes and I cannot ever remember having the thought of "Man my ears are getting tired" or "this is too bright". What I do rememeber on numerous occassions is saying, "WOW! That sounded awesome!". For music, I hear details that most speakers overlook or conceal. I call that accurate, not bright. When I can hear every gun shell bounce off the floor from a firearm that has been fired, I call that precision, not bright. When I can hear the intriquite sliding of a guitarist hand moving from fret to fret, that's revealing, not bright. That's the way I see it anyways. The opening car chase of Quantum of Solace is one of my reference scenes. LOTS of highs and lows, great LFE (though not as low as some others out there).. it really puts the speakers through the paces. Having said that, there's a couple of moments where cars wreck and glass shatters that it's like "WOW" that was harsh. But like Youth said, that's precision, not bright. I'm also listening near reference levels. My wife hates that movie because I've played that scene so many times.
  4. i've wondered this for years now. mine is more of random whimsy. i decided i wanted an online pseudonym and started looking for some names that evoked sort of a 1920's New England playboy persona. Think of "the great gatsby".
  5. Jake: What is this? Elwood: What? Jake: This car. This stupid car. Where's the Cadillac? [Jake tries to use the car's lighter, but it does not work; he throws it out the window] Jake: The Caddy, where's the Caddy? Elwood The what? Jake: The Cadillac we used to have! The Bluesmobile! Elwood I traded it. Jake: You traded the Bluesmobile for this?! Elwood: No ... for a microphone. Jake: A microphone? [pause] Okay, I can see that. But what the hell is this? Elwood: This was a bargain. I picked it up at the Mount Prospect City police auction last spring. It's an old Mount Prospect police car. They were practically giving them away. Jake: Well thank you, pal. The day I get out of prison, my own brother comes to pick me up in a police car.
  6. can't really tell, even from these..definitely sounds like a lover's dispute. http://jolida.net/jolida%20fedcourt.htm
  7. sounds like a great opportunity to break in our new moderator.
  8. lol, dude.. calm down. It's only been a few hours since you posted. Give it a week or so and see if anyone near you can offer up a listening session. I'm pretty sure your survival, ability to sleep safely, or your day job does not rely on the immediate purchase of speakers. so be patient - you'll avoid the "what if?" syndrome, have a happier experience in obtaining your audio equipment, and will reduce conflict with your wife.
  9. don't forget that many many many people are used to muddy sounding speakers, and anything resembling neutral and efficient will sound "bright". Definitely be patient and wait until you find someone local that will let you demo for a few hours. I think your cocerns will be put to rest.
  10. I've tried tinkering with REW a little bit, but gave up until I actually have my sub here to mess around with. I searched around last month and read *somewhere* that the audyssey mics actually are quite suitable for sub measurements and such. it was in one of the many AVS threads, but I don't recall which.
  11. old thread, made me chuckle. you're not digging this iteration of madonna?
  12. it's ok, and we still love you. literally half of my friends don't like my speakers ..too bright, too neutral, and aesthetically doesn't suit them. you're not a failure, and it's good you got a chance to listen to them. i WOULD, however, try and find a local member that can audition for you. stores are notorious for improper setup, and poorly setting up speakers they really don't care about selling. if you can find someone that has lovingly set them up in their home to try out a bunch of different material you might change your mind, or confirm your first impressions. sorta like getting a 2nd or 3rd doctor's opinion.
  13. why would you make your mains and amp work harder when you have a competent and capable sub, effectively wasting it?
  14. that's one thing i love about this forum. There are some VERY expensive setups and collections, yet very few snobs. Everyone is very welcoming and supportive of each other's setups and gear. Plenty of bragging, but that's to be expected ..the way in which the bragging is done - a friendly and mutually respected attitude - that keeps this place different than AVS and the like.
  15. ha, don't change on my account. once i get back with my sub, i doubt i'll be leaving the house much at all; between research and holidays, i've waited quite a while to get this thing. i will still have to prep and paint the cabinet, then move it into place, measure and tweak room response, then re-watch everything i own.
  16. I'm in princeton, which is east of McKinney. Feb 4th weekend is superbowl, and feb 11th I'm going down to beaumont to pick up a sub. Eventually I'll make it to one of these, and will happily pick up some north-north tx'ers with an aversion to driving.
  17. doh! skipped straight to the video and noticed the guy using only his ipad.
  18. what options for source content and control exist outside of the iOS devices? In 10 years theres going to be a whole new world of tech - i'd hate for this thing to be obsolete simply because it was built around Airplay.
  19. sounds like you need to turn the room layout around ..or buy a new house.
  20. youd be surprised. theaters are about getting LOUD in a large space..not so worried about getting low.
  21. +1 I've been using my dad's craftsman wet/dry while renovating. He picked it up used in the 80s. It's caused me grief in a couple of rooms, pulling up carpet at the edges or seams when I've accidently let it latch on and create full suction.
  22. i remember a girl in high school with the nickname of shop vac..
  23. Is it HDMI CEC that you're thinking of? I've never used it, but it sounds similar to what you're describing.
