  1. Guys, Interesting discussion regarding amplifier damping factors. Question for you all - since damping factor is a ratio of load impedance (i.e., the speaker system) divided by the amplifier's output impedance, what load impedance are we talking about here? When manufacturers start throwing out numbers like 100 vs. 1000, what load impedance are they using to generate their stats? Also, a higher damping factor is not always a good thing. High damping factors generally equate to very low output impedances (remember, we're talking ratios here). To get very low output impedance, the amplifier design probably has a lot of negative feedback. Unless designed very carefully, an amp with negative feedback will probably exhibit more phase shift than an amplifier that has less negative feedback - and that means it will distort the sound. The more phase shift, the more distortion. So damping factor shouldn't be taken out of context -- it's one barometer among many to use when evaluating an amp's performace. Of course, as John suggests, the best measure is one's own ears! Colin ------------------ My System
  2. Jim - Do you have Chorus I's or Chorus II's??? Colin ------------------ My System
  3. C'mon Boa, you are now a Zen Master when it comes to ground loop hum... m00n - Click on http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003279.html for an exhaustive discussion on the topic of ground loop hum. Good luck, Colin ------------------ My System This message has been edited by chickey on 04-23-2002 at 09:03 PM
  4. Doug, You too??!! LOL. Of course, once they stop and listen, the wives usually come around to their senses... C ------------------ My System
  5. Jim, Thanks for the detailed and very complete response. I'll definitely give the Stage One a serious listen. Can't wait!! Thanks again, Colin ------------------ My System

  7. LOL, glad I could help!! Enjoy the tunes. You have a really nice pre-amp there! Regards, Colin ------------------ My System
  8. Jalen - What interconnects are you using? You may want to try a set where the shield is disconnected on one end, so as not to create a ground loop, which is what I suspect you are experiencing. Of course, as you have pointed out, the Parasound itself may be defective, but you'll figure that out pretty soon once you pick up the new unit. C ------------------ My System
  9. Unhook the CD changer from the Parasound. Do you still have the buzz? C ------------------ My System
  10. Hook up only your speakers and amp to the Parasound and see if you have a hum. If not, add each component one at a time and see what happens. Is everything hooked/homed to the same AC wall outlet?? Colin ------------------ My System
  11. What Dndphishin said. C ------------------ My System
  12. Boa - Yes sir, it does. Heard many good things about the B&K, so an audition is definitely in order. I also want to check out the new Parasound Halo line once it is released. Of course, the wife is still getting over the RS-7's she bought me for Christmas ("those are going up on the side walls??!!"), so I'll tread lightly for a quarter or two. It will give me time to audition and have some fun to boot! Best, Colin ------------------ My System This message has been edited by chickey on 04-12-2002 at 03:04 PM
  13. Wow Jim, thanks, your response made for some great reading! I'd also be interested to know your perception of how the Aragon Stage One matches up with the Klipsch in your main theater. I'll be looking to upgrade my pre/pro at some point in the not too distant feature, and the Stage One is on my short list to audition. I'm running Chorus II's up front, and one of the key criteria last time I did my shopping was to insure the pre/pro wasn't too bright or harsh with the CII's. I wound up with a Parasound unit which sounds great in 2 channel, but is now dated for home theater (only DD, no DTS or 6.1/7.1 support). Would love to hear your opinion on how the Stage One matches up with horns. I know, what else is a Klipsch rep going to say, but having observed your objectivity on these boards before, your opinion would be invaluable. Thanks again! 14. Ray is on the money, as usual. Like everything else in life, there is good and bad in the Carver line-up. Your (friend's) choice also depends on what kind of equipment he plans on hooking up to the Carver. Carver's Magnetic Field Amps (M1.0t, 1.5t, etc.) may not be the best choice for hooking up to highly sensitive speakers like Klispch, because the hum associated with the amp's transformer will come right through the speakers. On the other hand, I run Carver TFM 35x's and they are quiet as the proverbial church mouse through my Klipsch -- no easy feat when paired up with speakers ranging from 98 to 101 dB sensitivity. So it all depends. Colin ------------------ My System This message has been edited by chickey on 04-12-2002 at 11:34 AM
  15. Just curious -- I know this topic has been hit upon before to a certain degree -- but it would be interesting to know what Klipsch speakers our board moderators feature in their personal systems. BobG, Jim, Phil --- any takers?? Colin ------------------ My System
  16. Great question Brett. Been thinking of doing the same with my C7 if I can ever find an Academy for the front center. I too have Chorus II mains. Colin ------------------ My System
  17. LOL...that's great!!! Is it safe to assume the current girlfriend doesn't read these boards either? C ------------------ My System
  18. Hey Boa, what's on top of that short stack of books?? Just curious. C ------------------ My System This message has been edited by chickey on 04-06-2002 at 03:31 PM
  19. Definitely agree with what BobG said. I use a Mondial Magic box (picked up long before they became part of the Klipsch family) and they do work. As Bob said, no picture degradation. The balun trick also works as a quick fix, but depending on your cable signal strength, it may create a new problem in fixing the existing one. In my case, the baluns eliminated the hum, but becuase my cable signal is split 4 ways as it enters the house, the addition of the baluns created some degradation of the picture quality. Not huge, but noticeable on weaker stations. It was worth the upgrade to the Mondial box in my case. Your own results may vary. Try the cheap fix first and see if it works to your satisfaction before shelling out the extra bucks. 21. Goods - Me too!!! I thought it was something screwy with my system the night I auditioned Das Boot, so I rechecked everything the next day to no avail. There is one scene I recall when the crew is singing and then the scene cuts to the captain in the conning tower that is absolutely unbearable. Screech, screech, screech throughout. Just to double-check, I listened to the movie using the headphone jack of my DVD player and heard the same thing. I sold that DVD the next week on Amazon and was happy to see it go. You don't know how glad I am to hear that someone else had the same experience...kind of puts my mind at rest. Colin ------------------ My System
  22. So gang, what's going on down in Klipsch-land today??? Jhawk?? aab3rd?? Anyone??? Anyone??? (ad lib Ben Stein) Inquiring minds want to know.... C ------------------ My System
  23. John - More, please! It's a fun distraction from the everyday grind of tubes vs. solid state, zipcord vs. esoteric speaker cables, and Heritage vs. Reference. Maybe I'll even guess right one day! C ------------------ My System This message has been edited by chickey on 03-20-2002 at 09:50 PM
  24. How about DD (as in Double D)?? Used to know a woman named Dee Dee Young. She signed up for AOL and couldn't figure out why she got IM'ed so much evertime she logged on. When I inquired as to her AOL username, she replied that it was simply the one the system assigned her - you guessed it - "YoungDD" End of story. C ------------------ My System
  25. To quote Seinfeld "They're real, and they're spectacular!" OK, how about a little clue?? Like, how old is she now? C ------------------ My System
