  1. I'm using an RB-1080 with pair of KLF-20's and that thing has yet to run out of steam. A very clean and quick amp. Sometimes a little too quick, meaning it doesn't really give a kind of McIntosh warm feeling. But it depends on what your looking for. At lower volumes it does tend to hold back a little, but at upper volume levels.....well.....let 'er rip!! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  2. I will admit I'm a little biased when it comes to Peter. After all he does live about 15 miles away from me. You guys on the west coast are probably in a similar situation living that close to a "star" but in Cincy it just don't happen. Closest thing we have to a star is....well.....uh......Marge Schott ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-22-2002 at 11:05 PM
  3. Yea, sorry, I was only yokin'! My first system support was a plywood box I made in about a half-hour the basement out of scraps. Then I went big time (oh, boy!) it was a Gusdorf 5460 cabinet that some customer returned at my store and couldn't figure out how to put it together! My God it's a box for Christ sake. Anyway, the weight of my Carver MX-150 Receiver was bowing the shelf pretty bad (but never fell!). And the rest of the system was getting an upgrade as well so I ordered a StudioTech U48 (series I) at half price from the factory. That thing alone weighs 160lbs.! The girlfriend bought the matching TV stand. I don't have the heart to tell her that I really want an HGTV in a few years. Hey maybe they'll have more table-top 16:9 sets by then. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-23-2002 at 10:07 AM

  7. O.K. what do you guys think? Is this disk a little bass heavy? It's amazing that so much sound can come from only four guys! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-22-2002 at 10:43 PM

  11. In addition to this I also heard on the radio (three weeks ago) that 70% of the TV stations will NOT be ready to transmit the HD signal by the deadline in 2006(?). What really surprised me was when I was looking into a Mitsubishi 16:9 tv. I downloaded the manual and it said that playing non-16:9 format programs for more than XX% of the total playing time will result in uneven screen wear where the side "grey" blocks on the left and right side of the 4:3 picture will wear at a different rate. All of which is NOT covered under the warranty. Well burst my bubble! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  12. I can see it now.....people bumpin' posts all over the place. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  13. That's a KLF-30 turned sideways with a self made motorboard to remount the all the drivers. Neat, isn't it!! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  14. Welcome to the Mac family!! About that warmer sound; just let your ears adjust to it for a month or so. Sometimes my 20 year old C-33 will run me out of the room with HF. And ot think before this set-up I had the treble on a Carver Receiver and the EQ almost maxed out. But that was on some 87db Technics R&B speakers. I agree with you that the looks of the face plates on Mac equipment is just plain killer. Using glass was a very classy touch to match the sound. See if it sounds like it is going down an extra 1/2 octave or so, mine sure sounds like it. Nows the time to re-discover your whole music collection! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  15. The name?? Tom Blasing (as in Blazing Saddles). But enough horsin' around. It's really kind of a cool name to have to go along with some of employment my family has had. My father, as some of you know, is a retired Cincinnati Firefighter and at my last job I ran the Firearms Dept. at a local store chain. It just gave that unsaid feeling to other employees to not **** with me. Mom's side of the family has been traced back to a man name Oakie VanOsdol (1757-1849). Yes, he fought in the Revolutionary War. A cousin of mine has recently traced our family to the 1500's. The best part of all this is that I have no idea where any of these babbelings are going. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  16. quote: Originally posted by HornEd: It takes twice the energy to add 6dB as I understand the question. Ed- I may be wrong (and probably am)but to reach a 6db increase wouldn't that require four times the energy? Doubling the energy needed for every 3db? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  17. While your doing the SPL check also take a volt/ohm meter and put it on an AC 10 volt scale. Connect the gator clips to the speaker's posts while playing them at that 101db SPL and see what happens. Pretty low reading (1 watt = 2.83 AC volts), eh?. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-17-2002 at 04:39 PM
  18. Proud to say I'm the owner of a late seventies H.H. Scott 830z Analyzer. I've never seen anyone else with one of these. It's about the size of a large cassette deck, probably 4U in hieght. The LED's on this thing are rather strange. They sort of resemble the standard cheap little analyzers you see on some cheaper EQ's. But it's only two LED's that light up at the peak of each measured output frequency. I say "two" LEDs because, well, look at it this way. If you did the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" song with your hands that would give you a good idea. The bottom led would not turn off at the exact same time the next measured segment above it would turn on. Kinda like a Slinky going up a flight of stairs. Wish I could describe it better. It is really cool though. Paid only a C-note for it in 1984 and was told they sold for about $1,000, got the original mic but no box. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-17-2002 at 09:37 AM
  19. I used to have a Sansui reciever that looked a lot like that Marantz. Also had a Marantz integrated helping out in the early days of biamping some JBL L-300's Summits. I think it was an 1150D model. Can't believe I was using a Bogen DB230 tube amp for the LF on those things! Hey, I like the designer cinder block!! Oh the days.... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-17-2002 at 10:03 AM

  22. From what I've been hearing the refurb stuff can be actually more dependable than new. Meaning that after a unit has been refurbed then ALL the fuctions are much more extensively tested before it leaves the shop. I can't say that the same amount of attention is given to every NEW unit that comes off the line. I currently have a Panasonic 2.4GHz telephone that started having problems and was just a few months out of warranty. The factory does have an exchange program for about half what the new unit costs. The refurbed I was sent had a problem as well in the handset so the factory sent me a pre-paid UPS label to return THAT part. So I guess that if it's not crucial to have a quick turnaround time to have a unit repaired then go for it. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  23. I'd really like to change mine and still keep my posts total. Any ideas? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  24. Justin- Hey!! I got dibs on his computer!!! Sorry, really bad joke on the surface but some jocularity is good medicine. I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes about six years ago and to look at me you'd never know it. At 5'8" and 145-150lbs. I am thankful that I've lived this long. Fortunatley I have a job that gets me plenty of exercise and still allows me to stretch the ol' noodle too. HornED would know what I mean. My girlfriend had a dicovery of 11 tumors during an exploritory surgery that lead to the removal of the ovaries and the uterus. We're so glad to find that all were benign. For a soothing touch have them sterilize some speakers to put in the O/R. Good luck... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-16-2002 at 12:44 PM
  25. My favorite vinyl album has to be "WEBN...The Vinyl Days". It is a compilation project album from a local hard rock radio station, all though back in 1976 when this came out it was more of cool rock. Anyway, the profits from the sale of this piece went to United Appeal. It sold for only $1.50! Needless to say I have accumulated more than a few copies of this and have worn out a couple. The collection consists of local recording artists that hope to make it in the big time. It ranges from the silly, serious, whimsical, solos, and down right good feelin'. Some of the tracks, I am very suprised, are not heard as everyday play. Since the first release of this masterpiece there have been nine more yearly new collections, known as "The Album Project" #2 through #9. and then an anniversery edition. I'm sure DEANG has heard of these since he lives only about 60 miles away. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 05-15-2002 at 10:54 PM
