  1. Norty- The cartridge does IMO have the most to do with it. Other factors will contribute as well but the cartridge should be the biggest one. Of the three I own/use here is a run down: Sure V15 Type V w/VN45HE stylus- the quickest of the three with accurate tone qualities. My favorite of the bunch, and the most wore out.(Paid $200 in 1984) Ortofon VMS30 mkII- much smoother and less bright than the Sure. Definitley for the romantic evenings with whomever. If Barry White ever designed a cart., this would be it. (Paid $180 in 1985) Stanton 999SS- although the least played it is with out a doubt the sturdiest cart. of the three. Still not bad for the money. 2. My second job is at a (once) businessman's club in downtown Cincinnati (NO, THERE'S NO MORE RIOTING GOING ON!! Sorry, I still hate the local news media.) Anyway, it's the same place Peter Frampton had the reception for his second wedding. In fact, we have receptions just about every weekend. Thus, the live bands. We hardly ever get to see too many people remotely famous, well....that close up anyway. The most noted one was sax player Tom Scott and guitarist Russ Freeman playing for a female vocal named Patsy Meyer. Never the less, there is a live band almost every time. Rarely a 'real' sound check. Meaning some one is looking at an RTA or holding an SPL meter. And the accousics are dismal at best. Rectangular rooms with 110 year old oak floors with either wood beams and colums or plaster latheing with 18-20 foot ceilings. Yech!! A few years ago we (girlfriend and I ) used to work at the Riverfront Colosium for different venues. The neatest was waching Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" tour and getting paid for it. Didn't get much work done that night. BTW-Did anyone catch Blue Rodeo on PBS's Austin City Limits tonight. There was another discussion about what type of music or band one could assign to them. The best I could come up with is Pure Prairy League. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 3. Sorry, when I said "Time to get Nasty!" I was referring to going through the legal system. Not, well....calling them up and yelling obscenities at the shop personnel or anything like that. If one of the television or radio stations has a Consumer Advocate type person on their news staff you want to cc: a copy to them too. Nothing hurts like bad publicity.

  5. Real wood? Well....yes, it is....sort of. It's made from MDF (Medium Desity Fiberboard). Then it's toped with wood vaneers. It's not made from the high grade ply-wood that the Heritage Series is/was. As far as sound differences go? 7. The biggest pieces of evidence you have right now are the original receipt and the paper the repair dept. gave you when you took it in the last time for repair. Any other papers you have definitely will not hurt your case either. But BE SURE TO DOCUMENT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS!! If someone hands you a gum wrapper to throw out, be sure to makes notes about it. A well documented case has a lot better chance of winning. I'm not sure where the monatary limits for Small Claims Court in Florida but if you do have to hire an attorney just remember, the attorney will most likely charge about 1/4 to 1/3 of your amount awarded by the court. See if you can add cost of legal fees to your claim so you come out at least even on the deal. After all, you took it to them and they gave you a receipt saying that they have it. Now your not getting it back. Do they just expect you to walk away and say "Oh, well.". I had trouble locally with a parking garage near my office that parks your car for you. The customers are not allowed to do it themselves. Of course they scratched it in couple places. Being really ticked and after getting a non-responsive answer from the manager I decided to take it to the next level. Total damage was about $200-$300 or so. Being in the legal business, as I am, I have all kinds of nasty and vengeful things to do. The first (and fortunatly the only) thing I did was to write to the owner of the garage (certified mail with a signature return, remember-document everything). Took pictures and labled them with Plaintiff's Exhibit stickers I borrowed from a court reporter (if you need any just let me know). In the garage there is a sign that says that their insurance does not cover damage caused to vehicles. I wrote in the letter "I realize that (the sign) is on display and the customer is not permitted to park their own car, but that doesn't mean you are not responsible for the care of my car while it is in your possession." In closing in the letter I added that takin gthis to court would cost them more in litigation fees than the actual cost of the damage. Time to get NASTY.......but legal BTW--The garage paid for the damage and told me to park someplace else. I now take the bus and save some $2,500 a year between parking fees, gas, tires, lower mileage car insurance etc. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 10. I've got that same framed poster from the Weaver Gallery. Go it from (of all places) a movie theater lobby that sold the art they had on the walls. Think I paid $60 (foggy memory) in 1987. An original one was left on the wall when I moved from my first house in 1985. Not my doing though. It was as "tattered" as a Rolling Stone by that time. The new version now hangs in my study. The girlfriend wouldn't let it in the livingroom. We did compromise. We found a greeting card with the very same picture on the front. We put it in a 5X7 frame and it and now resides on the end table next to my "big comfy chair" in the prime listening position. Nice to know I used to have at my disposal some JBL L-300's though. 11. PB- I have a twenty year old McIntosh preamp and it too has a very light hiss. Thusly it's not the amp section but the variable loudness. The more I turn down (not off) the loudness the more hiss there is. The loudness control, in this case, is just a variable choke. It had this problem when I first got the unit about six months ago. I sent it back for repairs. Only then it was a lot worse. They replaced a couple IC's and it was a lot less apparent (current state). So it may be in the preamp section. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 12. DK- I've got an old Yamaha K-1020 (duh-look below) all in it's original condition from 1987. Sendust heads, three motors and sounds fantastic. The door and the LED display is all made of glass, no plastic here. Not sure if it measures up to the K-2000 of the early 80's (it had auto biasing) but this sure wasn't too far behind. You may be able to pick one of these up used somewhere. This week I plan on taking it in to have it cleaned, tuned up and all the belts replaced. If that runs a few hundred bucks to do to this old tank it would be well worth it. 16. Well, more than likely your gonna need a couple of open tape loops or, as labled on some newer equipment, an "external processor" loop. Once the "In's and out's" are connected you must engage that tape loop and keep it on. I'm not real familiar with Denon equipment but the connections are pretty much the same with any preamp, integrated, receiver etc... A BIG WARNING!! Dynamic range expanders can and will destroy tweeters on super efficiant speakers (anything above 90db/1 watt@1 meter) I currently have a 3BX Series Two in storage for that very reason. I blew three tweeters before I convinced myself what was doing it. Range expanders can cause the amp to "run out of gas" when the volume is set to whatever level. The expander is asking the amp to put out more power than what it's able to. It doesn't matter how many watts per channel the amp can put out, the amp is always being held back (on purpose by the volume control) and the expander is asking it put out more than is possible at the current volume position. When this is done is causes the amp to 'clip'. Meaning the top of the sine wave, if you were looking at an occilloscope, has it's top end sharply cut (or clipped) off. When this happens it causes an ultra-high frequency to be put through the tweeters. Tweeters hate this and will eventually blow. When range expanders are used with very efficiant speakers (ie. Klipsch) they must be used with much moderation. Almost to the point where you can't tell it's active. Personally, I would leave the Range Expanders to much less efficiant speakers. Sorry, I don't have any experience with the Subharmonic Controller. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 19. matthew2 mentioned that his dealer only carried one line of Klipsch's. Now when I was in retail some twenty years ago it was a known tactic to NOT carry the exact same models as your competitors. This was to prevent price wars where neither store makes a whole lot of that nasty 'p'-word. Profit. This was a lot easier to do with items such as t.v.'s or VCR's but with Klipsch's it's a little harder I'm sure. On top of all that, to keep the Heritage line line in stock would take up a boatload of initial capital just to stock it the first time. For a lot of stores this wouldn't leave a lot of money left to keep non-speakeritems in stock. Yes, i would like to see a Klipsch based store in Southern to Mid-Ohio but to draw a steady stream of moderate customer traffic from a distance is gonna be tough. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H.
