  1. Bucking Magnets are additional magnet disks that are roughly the same diameter as the magnet on each driver (tweeter, midrange & woofer). They attach to the back of each magnet on each driver. What they do is magneticly shield the speaker from emitting it's magnetic field to other components (i.e.-the t.v. picture tube) and distort the picture with waves and color variation. If you've never put a magnet up to the picture tube of a t.v.....well, just don't do it to someone who has a hot temper and a small wallet, because the distortion it creates may be permanent. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 3. Hey Wes! I was just up your way over the weekend in Flint. We went to the girlfriend's parents' house for a third Thanksgiving dinner in four days. I checked out a couple hi-end stores in the area. The most promising one had a sign on the door saying that appointments are being accepted and look for the new store soon, this note put up some time in July!! I'm not sure what street it was on but it was near Miller Road (we stayed at the Motel-6) and the other was about 5 miles south off Route 23. Boy, coming home on 23 and 75 South was pretty rough yesterday. The wind was blowing from right to left on the highway about 40mph or so. Spent nearly four hours just trying to keep the car straight and the SUV's off my butt. Is it just me or does everyone up there drive crazy? I mean, the speed limit is 70mph, o.k. that means I may be able to push it to 85 if I'm lucky. But these people were passing me at what had to be 90+! ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 4. So, Kain, anything below that 0db number is actually the choking off of power going to the speakers. Think of it as a 100w light bulb with a dimmer switch. You turn the knob all the way to the right to get that 100w brightness and left for anything below 100w. When DM, DD and VG talk about a louder signal (in a number above 0db) this is sometimes called 'headroom'. Which some amps can do for limited amounts of time and measurement (say 1.9db). So if you have a source unit (cd player, tape deck etc.) that has an adjustable output knob on it and it is not already set to the max. Then turning THAT up would increase the amount of SPL (Sound Pressure Level) coming from the speakers without having to touch the volume control on the amp/receiver. I doubt seriously that your speakers will ever see a full 100w of power. Well, before something blows anyway. The amp will start to "run out of gas" (or output power) and begin to clip. Oh God, another tech term! If you were to look at an Osciliscope (sp?) and see an up and down wave on the screen, this is the high and low points of power from the amp. It looks like a constant rollercoaster going up and down. When the amp is being asked to produce more power than it is able, then that up-and-down thing on the Osciliscope (called a sine wave) cuts (or 'clips') off the top of the hill. This may sound as if it's a good thing but its not. What that missing signal is replaced by is inaudible high pitched and very dangerous distortion. Too much of this fry tweeters fast; they're the weakest driver in the most any speaker. --------------- Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 5. If your not willing to get one of those units that will sit in your cabinet like your other equipment (these are usually power strip/AC line conditioners) then you may want to look at say a Monster Cable HTS1000. It will protect everything to a point. The higher the 'jewel' rating the more protection there is. http://www.monstercable.com/power/index.html I was able to pick up an HTS5000 for $360 from ebay where MSRP is $600. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 14. db- The Dynamat idea sounds good but I havn't heard an A/B comparo yet. On other parts of the board (I think Al Klappenberger did this on his Belles) was to cut thin strips of Dynamat and apply it directly to the outside of the horn on the inside of the cabinet. Can't remember which thread that was. Funny you should mention the use of Monster cable from the amp the speaker. It is what I'm currently doing (that's where all the extra cable came from to do the mod) and I was contemplating getting a set AudioQuests in bi-wire (amp to speak). 15. I think what was in the original complaint was that it appears that he wants to gain membership subscriptions, and this BB can be a nice little recruiting ground to do it in. I do agree that if he had just put a link to his site explaining his group's purpose it would free up a lot more time and space. That would be o.k. with me. Just not some long running commercial, non-profit or not. This is the kind of ad I see in my e-mail that I don't even bother to open because they are just asking for money. At least here on the BB I would like to believe that I'm free of all that. 17. Big- Up until a few years ago the Loudness control was pretty much standard on all McIntosh preamps. Yea, the only people that had the guts to keep it. And a variable one at that! It's great! I use (adjust) it all the time to compensate for engineering differences in the recording. You may want to contact www.audioclassics.com to see if they have an old Mac receiver (sorry no X.1 Home Theater) to see if they have one with such a control. The stuff they have use more than likely in A-1 shape after they go over it with the proverbial 'fine-tooth'. When I got my C33 Preamp from them I really could not tell it was 18 years old! 18. Justin- Be careful when it comes to subscriptions!! Yes, they can save you a lot of money over the newstand but get this. It was time to renew my subscription to PC-World and the outside cover glued to the magazine quoted an annual price of $29.99. I don't remember paying that much the last time so I looked through the mag to find all the subscription cards quoting $24.99. This gets even better--I go online to their website, you guessed it! $19.97/year. The best part about this whole thing is that inside the mag was a page that said you could sign up for automatic renewels of your subscription. **LOL** Yea, at what price this time?! 19. From what I 'under-stand' spikes are to keep the speakers from ratteling the floor and ultimately the stereo components. Subjecting the components to such virbrations will more than likely degrade the detail and intensity of the tweeters and some partial spectrum of the midrange. Since I have hardwood floors I don't feel good about using the spikes that came with my 20's with little receiver cups to put the spikes on as to not dig into my girlfriend's favorite Red Oak. Another way to avoid vibrating the equipment is to get some sort of vibration isolating products. Try going here: http://www.vibrapod.com Compared to most other isolation products these things are dirt cheap at about $6 each pod. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 20. I just picked up the "Two Against Nature" DVD and yes it sounds great. About a year or so ago I first caught this being played on PBS (Public Brainwashing System, quote from Rush Limbaugh) and it had a portion that let the audience ask questions to Don and Walter. In this segment Don had a map of New York from the ceiling depicting where he and Walter grew up. Don said the map was useless because it showed the area between where they are from and not the actual locations. As Carl Sagan would say--"So what?!" This portion that was on PBS is not on the DVD. Does anyone know if there are two versions of this or any other pertinant information? 22. cleger- I had the same thing happen to my 20's. The cross threaded horns that is. Turns out they more than likely left the factory in the correct assembly arrangement. Due to the rough handeling of most of the KLF series line, some speakers faired the abuse better than others. I've heard stories of entire drivers rolling around in the cabs. This explaination comes from Bob G. I also took my fist and pounded on the top of the cab to see what kind of resonance these thing gave off. To my horror the thing actually rattled a good deal. I opened up the cab to find that everything was in it's proper place but the midrange magnet was bouncing on it's support shelf when it was jarred. This was also an easy fix. I applied some peel-n-stick felt on the contact area of the mid's magnet and every thing has been fine. Check it out!
