  1. Could it also be the lack of human/mechanical activity going on outside? Less cars, trucks, lawn mowers, planes and such. I live near an expressway (less than 100 yards) and a very small airport. The sound from those can very quite a bit. This message has been edited by tblasing on 07-26-2001 at 03:39 PM
  2. Ray, That one actualy took me a while. About twenty minutes or so. I had to draw from a few things. I remember my older brother playing Jethro Tull albums and one of them had Ian introducing the band. Anyway, one member (don't remember which one) touch a few notes on the keyboard. But it didn't hit the spot exactly. I looked at a few other intruments in the dictionary that I wasn't sure what they were, no dice. Then I played it again from vinyl. It hit me, this sounds very Italian. What do you see a man playing in an Italian resturaunt at a table to patrons. The accordion! Oh well, I draw from the oddest things sometimes. I understand about parents playing instruments. My mother plays the tennor sax. BADLY!...but she still plays...trying to relive her days of highschool. Fortunately she sings a lot better. can I take a bow now and slither away? As for the article, this is why I put in my profile "Stop asking my girlfriend" This message has been edited by tblasing on 07-24-2001 at 10:57 PM
  3. If anyone is near Cincinnati, Audible Elegance on Montgomery Road has a pair of Quartets in Oak made in July 1990 for $400. Pretty sure thats for the pair. Too hard to tell in one of those Salons that don't put price tags on anything. They're in awsome shape. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD (but seeking a McIntosh MVP831!) 4. I'm gonna expand the issue a bit here. In the realm of firearms a gauge is a reference to a lead ball of a given diameter that matches the bore of a shotgun. The number assigned to it is the number of balls of that diameter, when accumulated, eqaul one pound. This was adopted long before the mixing of tin with lead was used. Thus, similar to wire measurements, the lower the number the larger the ball diameter is and the fewer number of balls it takes to equal one pound. The only exception to this rule, that I can immedeatly think of is the .410ga. It is .410 inches diameter without it being choked. I'm still trying to find a list (I swore I once saw) that assigned letters after the number were exhausted. Those were some mighty big bores. 5. Not really being sure what your budget for one but I'm pretty sold (litterally) on one I bought from Studio Tech's Ultra Furniture line ( http://www.studiotech.com ). It's a U-48 in Rosewood for about $800. They also make a U-60 for about $1G. They're heavy alright, the U-48 weighs in at 160 lbs. and as the model number implies it has an interior height of 48". Each shelf with the "Smart Spikes" (vibration isolators) can hold up to 100 lbs. This thing is also very heat friendly. The front door and sides have metal mesh to for cooling. It also comes with standard plastic gliding feet as well as carpet spikes. I opted for the casters for $46 a set. The wood/metal sides and rear are NOT weight bearing!! That is handled by a steel black powdercoat interior frame (looks like hollow metal 2X4's). The mesh front can still allow remote control transmissions to reach the units, but you have to be in a straight line in front of it. Good luck! ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD (but seeking a McIntosh MVP831!) 12. dubai (gee, my brother in law is from there), If your also thinking about a DVD/CD player in a possible HT system then goto http://www.audioclassics.com and check out the MVP831 (about $1,400 but they'll probably give you a better deal) from Mac. The s/n ratio is about 100db or more for cd and it's the same size as their 7010 I'm pretty sure. Gee AL, can you see which way I'm going when I mothball the Carver TL-3100? Won't be a full HT setup but it would be nice to have the ability. If not those refurbished Krell KAV250cd's are another thought. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 18. I would also leave about five or six feet extra at each end of the speaker cable runs. This will allow for changes later on (different equipment and/or location. Running all the wires through the ceiling would probably be the easiest to get at later as said before by keeping them away from all AC lines and especially flourecents. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 20. rowoo! Sounds like you got that turntable you were in quest of. I've been using a Discwasher D3 (told ya I was old-) for about 20 years with what I would call decent results. If mass LP's were still on the market (outside of these 180 gram things going for $25 and up) I would get one of those machines that do professional job. But then again A) Where whould I put it? and Can I account for the $300 to $400 expense? Anywho, the $25 cost for the Discwasher is a good investment. I just can hardly ever remember to wipe the record before I play it.
