  1. Read 19 pages with 4 cups of coffee this morning! Exciting stuff happening for you Youthman! If you are even slightly impressed right now, wait until you get all 3 working together and dialed in with your sub. The margin between the LS and the 83's will be larger at that point. Going with the AT screen the full width of the room is the best move you could make. Pull the screen-wall out enough to allow for toe in. You want all horns pointing directly at your listening position. A laser pointer works nicely to determine this with the LS. Sit at the LP and point the laser from your ear to the LS and you will be able to see when the laser goes down the throat of the mid horn. I was a revolving door of equipment myself, until I got my current setup. Now, making changes doesn't cross my mind. Sure, I could make improvements, but the cost would climb exponentially. A Heritage home theater is off the charts for value, and I know from reading your posts over the years that you are value oriented. Regarding the caps, I redid my own. Not hard, and makes you feel like a tinkerer. The improvement in sound was marginal at best (for me). Looking forward to hearing your impressions as you progress.
  2. It's rewarding to see that some of my contributions are helpful! I haven't been on the forum in 2-3 years. Not for lack of interest, just lack of time. Willy, I appreciate the kind words. That was a fun day. I think you made a wise choice in not going with the Danleys for your apartment setting. I'm glad you're giving LaScalas a shot, and am real curious to hear your observations. I had come from the THX Ultra2's when I went to LaScalas. I felt like the U2's had a more refined, smooth quality. However, my room is really large, and the LaScalas have far more output. They also seem to "grab" the room. For movies, they have startling dynamics that weren't matched by the U2's. I wonder with your smaller room if you'll appreciate these differences? I believe that even though the RC64 is well respected, center channel will be the largest difference you'll notice. The LaScala as a center channel is awesome! Subs: You and I discussed this in PM for a bit. I was super excited and in awe of the system for a few years. However, I think my tastes are changing. For those first few years, I was in the room daily, and you tend to become acclimated to your system. You know, a fast car stops feeling fast, etc. Over the last few years, I've been back to college, new career, etc. I only get in the room once a month. When I do get that chance, I have to admit that the subs make me giggle over the absurd, crazy, output. Maybe it's because it's "new" every time, but it's just so much that it doesn't seem necessary any more. In the last 6 months, I've even changed the EQ to remove about 6db in the 20hz area, and taken the entire sub level down by 3db below my mains. The sheetrock, furniture, light fixtures, seem to appreciate it. Screen size: It doesn't sound like you need any convincing! I agree with most every comment you've received. Go AT, go as large as you can fit in the room. If you find you want to mask it down, that is easier and cheaper than rebuilding the screen. My screen is larger and has closer seating distances than anyone was recommending 5 years ago when I built it. I have not regretted the decision ever. I use a Panny 4000. It does a beautiful job with the size, in a completely light controlled room. I think the addition of LaScalas will be a marginal difference for you. If you go with the Danley sub (s) it will be a large change. The one change you will appreciate the most, in the long run, is screen size.
  3. So I started thinking about it, and my XPA 5 has been the most troublefree piece I've got in the rack. In fact, it's the pricier pieces that have historically had some quirk...I buzz, a fan squeel, etc. 3 years of heavy use and it has never done anything but its job.
  4. If you run a nice sub, I'd pass on both a find LaScalas for $800-$1000.
  5. I'm the fella Mustang Guy was referring to. Yes, I've been down the path you're on. Except, I was blinded so much by the marketing hype that I didn't listen to these fine men when they tried to save me some money. The Ultra2 system will at best be a sideways move from your current RF7's. I think the main source of my disappointment was the size of my room (similar to yours). Remember, that system was designed for rooms of 3000cf and smaller. I got into used LaScalas about 3 years ago and it was evident in the first few seconds that it was the right change for me. Any of the big horns will be the ticket! Don't underestimate the base requirements to not only keep up with these big horns, but fill the large volume of space you have. I learned that the hard way too.
  6. I've got it on Bluray and have enjoyed it 8-10 times over the last year! She's very entertaining, the music is great, and the recording is well done. I feel it is a little weak on the low end, but I'm a base junky.
  7. Coytee, I've been so busy that I haven't stepped foot on this forum in the last year. And I missed all this fun! Glad to hear you finally got a pair. Sad to hear you can't use them. Are you EQing them at all? running them raw? There is a tremendous difference in these cabinets with EQ. I found them unusable without. But you know these things better than I. Mine are now dialed in about perfect, and I don't suspect I'm sub shopping in the next few decades. I imagine with Jubscalas I'll say that about the top end too. I'll get there.
  8. I heard the T12's on the same day that I listened to my LaScalas. The JTRs were more refined / smoother. But they didn't have the dynamic punch of the LaScala. For my goals in theater use, I'm staying where I'm at.
  9. I had a huge surpise when I moved into a large room. Big rooms will act as a sponge acoustically. Or that's the conclusion I got from my journey. Particularly, I was after reference level, and it was not easy to accomplish. My search ended with LaScalas. You're on the right track.
  10. Well, that was my understanding too. If I put my ear right in the horn itself, I can tell the power is on. I wouldn't call it noise, but there is ever so slight of something. But if my ear is 24" from the horn, I couldn't hear a thing. Certainly nothing 20' back where my LP is. Just saying, it might be a non issue that snowballed on the internet? or, for the folks this happened too, they could have had anything else in the chain making noise? I don't know... Anyway, blue lights = good. I get it!
  11. What would anyone need from an XPR that the XPA is not doing? Also, are alot of people having noise floor concerns with the XPA? Mine is dead silent...do I not know what noise floor means?
  12. I'm using an XPA5 to power my 3 LaScalas and 2 Heresies. In someone elses system the noise floor may have presented itself, but it has never in mine. My system is dead quiet. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Emotiva. Whether or not the power is necessary, I did it for the same reason mentioned earlier. It was worth the money to exterminate the upgrade bug! And trust me, this setup will kill it! However, I don't doubt that the lesser amp would have been fine. You're going to have one fine system. I had to go with RS62's for my sides due to space constraints, but they do a great job too. What do you have in mind for subs? edit: oh, I see the pair of Tubas in your sig. What's your room size?
  13. Cobra, I used my kl650's with my LaScalas for awhile. It wasn't bad, but it was a noted improvement when I went all Heritage. I don't think those in walls stand a chance keeping pace with the LaScalas. A klipsch engineer directly suggested to me that the rs62's aremore capable than the u2's. That's what I went with for my sides, and and have been pleased with the choice.
  14. Hold out for a LaScala center. If there's a reason you must compromise, then there wouldn't be much difference between the Forte and Chorus.
  15. Great looking room Indy! Those are better pictures than I can ever get. I think I have an idea what it might sound like.
  16. I, too, am not technical in nature, so take my comments as such. As many of you know, I use 3 LaScala along with a pair of the Danley DTS10 subs. I've also been to the Danley showroom (errrr, warehouse) and have spent about 4-6 hours listening to most of their lineup. Regarding the subs. I agree with Quiet Hollow in that the negative experiences described are not typical. There was something in the setup or chain that wasn't optomized. I've had several "audiophile" type come over and drop their jaws listening to music. Maybe they didn't want to hurt my feelings? I don't know... And for theater use, they are just ridiculous. Coytee's mashed potatoe comments have been verified by several guests at my place. They claim that they literally feel their organs being rearranged. One went to the bathroom saying they were going to vomit after a heavy base demo. Maybe that's not a compliment! LOL For the mains, none of the under 10k per cabinet options at Danley made significant improvements over LaScalas and Khorns. Maybe for the guys with spidey senses, but not for me. Now, the largest of their options were definitely amazing, but you're looking at 20 times the budget and more space than any of us have to spare. I love Danley, but my demo left me more impressed with the value in LS and Khorns.
  17. Just watched it a few days ago. OUTSTANDING! I watched with subtitles on and could really appreciate the writing. Beautiful stuff.
  18. Those brackets are cool Youthman! Neat solution.
  19. Hey guys. I was away for the weekend. I appreciate the ooooo's and ahhhh's. I even appreciate being called "crazy". I just rewatched MI4 last night and did at -10mv since I had company over. They were all uncomfortable at even that volume. But sure enough they were paying attention! At one point, in my peripheral I saw everyone in the row jump in their seat. I tell ya. Good dynamics compared to anything else is almost like not watching the same movie. Just keep your eyes open for that single. I put a WTB in the garage section when I was hunting, and one popped up within a week. You might try that. As impressed as you are at the left and right channel, realize that the center is going to impact your system even more than they did. It's definitely worth patience until one works out for you.
  20. MI4 was an outstanding soundtrack! Watch it near reference level and I guarantee you'll jump several times! Particularly, the handguns were just stunning.
  21. That list is growing quickly! Seems like I've watched 8-10 of them in the last 6 months.
  22. About a year ago I read a discussion on this topic at AVS. I seem to recall Chris K. (of Audyssey) commented that it does in fact run on top of the lossless tracks. It transposes the extra 2 channels and they are still lossless. I use it for everything to give me my rear surrounds and have been very pleased. My understanding is that it is essentially the same signal my side surrounds get, but set to different delays. I simple response to a complex question.
  23. Are you considering that single for the center? If you are, I can't recommend it enough. Your current center is a weak link that will really hold back the system.
  24. Your learning curve was fast young grasshopper! It only takes a brief few minutes of listening to come to the dark side. I could tell more difference when adding polycarbonate bypass filters than I could the actual change in crossover. Mustang. Yeah, we could have helped each other out. That was about a year ago, and speakerfritz made me an even swap. You may contact him if looking for AL3's ???
  25. It's next up on my Netflix list. I've never seen it before, so the story will be completely new to me. Glad to hear this disc is done well technically!
