  1. ENORMOUS MAN, If you have Denon 2802 coming, you're in for loads of fun. It should have Dolby Pro Logic II which has a cinema and music setting. Try your CDs through that and the 5 channel stereo. They're a bit different. I have the 3802 with DPL II. I switch between that & 5 channel stereo depending on my mood. TV also sounds good through DPL II. I haven't gotten around to trying any of my old cassette tapes or video tapes through it yet, but it's just a matter of time. I have Klipsch Reference speakers hooked to the Denon and I'm having a ball. Enjoy your set-up. lovedrummin
  2. Olaf, I'm going to have to dig out my Blind Faith album. I was fortunate enough to see Ginger Baker on Cream's last tour in the US - Nov '68 Baltimore Civic Center. Needless to say I was amazed & mesmerized. I also saw Cobham play in a jazz rock/fusion group called Dreams while I was at Salisbury State College in MD. They played on campus (@ '70-'71) - I had no idea who these guys were or what they would go on to when I saw them or I would have payed closer attention. Randy & Michael Brecker played horns in Dreams. Around the same time period I also saw the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble at Salisbury. They had a guy named Michael Kamen in their midst. Kamen must score half the movies released these days. Back to Cobham - in the '80s I saw him at the Irvine Auditorium on Penn Campus with Jack Bruce, Clem Clemson & David Sanciuos. Cobham had that triple bass drum Tama set with the sunburst finish. It just drove me nuts watching this guy play with complete four limb independence - first he leads with the right then he leads with the left. I was always happy just to be able to anchor the beat. I'll save Bernard "Pretty" Purdie for another time. Anyway, now you know why I couldn't buy good speakers back then - I was spending all my money on concert tickets. 3. I think Matrix Reloaded or Revisited is a behind the scenes dvd rather than a Matrix II (sequel). I think Best Buy may have this now. Also check Best Buy for the Eagles - Hell Freezes Over and Steely Dan - Two Against Nature.
  4. If you have a good quality receiver, it should last for many years before showing signs of wear & tear. I had my old HK stereo receiver about 18 years before I started having any problems with it. IMHO the changes in technology will make your receiver seem worse for wear & tear before you have any actual problems with it. Just about the time you have something you believe is on the cutting edge of technology, something new comes along. It's always fun buying new toys. I've been trying to convince my better half that my Denon 3802 and Klipsch speakers should last me until I die - I don't think she's buying it. LEW
  5. For those of you who enjoy hearing drums through your Klipsch speakers check out the drum build up at the beginning of Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" or some of Billy Cobham's recordings (I think he has a new anthology out). : LEW
  6. OLAF, You're right, playing drums was always a blast. I know what you mean about the Japanese drum companies, although I must admit I currently own a 1987 set of Tama Superstar drums. I don't play much any more, but I can't seem to part with them. The first set of drums I ever bought was a 1973 Rogers set. I still have the Rogers Dynasonic snare (chrome shell) that came with the set. It has that heavy snare bridge on it. I'll never part with that baby - what a great rock drumming snare. Marvel is right, Gretsch also made good quality drums. For some reason I always associated them with jazz drummers - which isn't a bad thing. I do believe that Charlie Watts of the Stones played Gretsch. I think what happened in the '60s, is alot of guys saw Mr.Starkey behind those Ludwigs & had to have them. I think I went after the Rogers because Buddy Rich played them at one time & I was a big fan of his. You're also right about Roy Buchanan. He had alot of finesse. Some of his lighter touches reminded me alot of B.B. King. He could say so much with very few notes. And then he could let that guitar rip. I was fortunate to see him play around '86 or '87 at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia,Md. Also on the bill was Fabulous Thunderbirds with Jimmy Vaughn on guitar and Jimmy's little brother Stevie Ray as the headliner. What an evening of blues that was. Well I guess I've managed to take this post in a different direction. Sorry folks - just trippin' down memory lane. That's also one of nice things about aging - there are alot of fond memories. Also with my Klipsch speakers listening to some of this older music is like hearing it all over again for the first time. Did I manage to bring this full circle? LEW
  7. Olaf, I also played drums (country & rock)in bands between '73 & '87 - then I DJed for about another 6-7 years. When I got done DJing I usually went home & tuned into MTV's Headbangers Ball (needed it after a night of playing that '80s & '90s dance music). You remember MTV don't you? - that all music station that actually used to play nothing but music videoes. Anyway, I'm still a classic rock kind of guy. I occaisionally listen to some old jazz-fusion type music. What I really get into these days is blues music (the 3 Kings - Albert, B.B. & Freddy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Delbert McClinton etc.) And I too have that constant ringing in my ears. But I can still tell the difference between good sound and less than good sound. Just think, 20 years from now some of these younger listeners will look back at some of today's bands, groups & singers as "classic". LEW
  8. Thanks for the info & pictures. You're right about the speaker weight - mine are 23 lbs. I'll have to check out the Bell'o site. LEW
  9. Kevin, Very nice, clean looking set up you have there. Also like your taste in wall decorations - pics of the Fab Four. LEW
  10. JesseNYC, Nice set up. Question(s) - What make/model speaker stands are you using for your SB-1 speakers? They look like they're adjustable, if so how adjustable. I know this will sound dumb , but here goes - how are the speakers attached to the stands? I have a pair of Klipsch RB5 II speakers and I need to get stands. I like the looks of the ones you're using. Thanks for any input/info you can provide. LEW
  11. Congratulations t-man & Mom. You've got a cute daughter there. Ah yes, daughters - God's way of getting even with men for all our past transgressions. My youngest daughter is now 19 & like her mother already knows it all. Thank God, I have Klipsch in the house to keep me sane. Enjoy her at these young stages. Next thing you know she'll be asking to borrow your car. Best wishes & Happy Thanksgiving. LEW
  12. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! My prayers and blessings go out to all of you and your families. PhilH, thanks for reminding us that we need to look out for and extend help to those less fortunate than ourselves, especially in these turbulent times. Peace be with you all. LEW
  13. Hey, If it keeps the guys from dialing those 1-900 numbers so they can talk to Priscilla Goodbody and her friends, it's like money in the bank. Not to mention it keeps your significant other off your back. There are worse addictions in this world.
  14. Ditto, Gil. No matter what the age of the listener, or how old, new or the type of music - you still need good quality equipment & especially speakers (i.e. Klipsch). This site with it's open discussion & exchange of information was most beneficial to me in my journey to bring my a/v equipment into the 21st century. I still have some equipment to upgrade/add (upgrade dvd player & add cd recorder). I'm always learning something new. Getting there is half the fun. LEW
  15. I know I've sufferred some hearing loss over the years, due to the volume at which I like my music & due to playing in bands, but I think I can still hear differences in music. I just purchased my Klipsch speakers about a month ago & I'd been looking & listening to various speakers for about a year. I always came back to Klipsch. I always took the same CDs with me to try out the various speakers & could definitely tell the difference not only from one brand to another but also from different models within a brand. With the Klipsch I started out listening to the Synergy speakers. Once I heard the Reference speakers there was no turning back. They are hooked to a Denon 3802. Theears - Radio Shack, huh? Don't feel bad my first system was by Lafayette (speakers, receiver & turntable - all for @$250) & that was a step up at the time. I just entered the the surround world. The system I replaced consisted of an HK receiver (stereo) & Bose 601 speakers - all bought about 21 years ago. It's a whole new world. If anything has really changed for me, it is that I now listen to a wider variety of music. Of course now I'll probably never go to a movie theater again - don't need to - I have better sound at home than my local theater. Keep enjoying the music whatever your age. LEW (51 & willing to admit it)
  16. Ah yes, Helga! How could I have forgotten about the very talented Helga? That was a rather tense moment. Must have forgotten Helga due to the misdirection provided by Ginger and her assets. And you guys probably thought I wasn't paying any attention to the dialogue. -- Lew
  17. Doug - Like I said, I'm new to HT, & I haven't had my Denon 3802 very long. I keep forgetting about that auto select mode. I'll have to give it a shot & see what happens. ZZ Top sure had the house rockin' earlier. The neighbors a gonna hate me & my wife still doesn't understand. Ah well, such is life. Thanks for the auto select mode tip. -- LEW
  18. skonopa - I just purchased the Denon 3802. I'm still learning how to use this bad boy as I'm relatively new to HT, but having fun doing so. Sure is a different animal than my old stereo receiver. Anyway, if you're going to shop on-line, you may want to check out www.pricegrabber.com - you can plug in the manufacturer & model & it will give you about a half dozen places & their prices. Plug in your zip code and it will also give you the price with shipping & handling. Happy hunting. -- LEW
  19. Just watched this one a couple days ago. Hallie Berry has some good points. It's a wild movie and Hallie Berry has some good points. The movie reminded me of Speed in spots. Lots of action and the special effects aren't bad. Did I mention that Hallie Berry has some good points?
  20. dougdrake2 - Thanks for the Diana Krall tip. My receiver has dts capability, but my dvd player does not. It's my understanding that the dvd player also has to be able to process dts. Is this true or am I not accessing the dts on my receiver properly? I borrowed a copy of Eagles - Hell Freezes Over from a friend and can't seem to get it to play in dts mode. It's still pretty impressive in DD surround though. I'm very new to home theater so I may not be expressing myself here very well. I'm sure you guys can get me on the right track though. Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks. Well, I've been listening to various cuts from the Byrds Box Set today. Time to move on to something a little heavier > ZZ Top - One Foot In The Blues. Catch you later guys. -- LEW
  21. I didn't buy from a local dealer because of any dislike for on-line distributors and I might add that I've also checked out www.audiosurvey.com and found it to be a very good site. I wanted to buy from an authorized dealer fairly locally due to warranty. The store I purchased from also advised that if I have a problem with the products to just bring it in and they will send it for repair. In addition they advised that in the case of the receiver, they would let me have a loaner until mine was returned. Don't know what they would do about speakers - may be pressing my luck for a loaner there, but it was definitely a consideration in regards to the receiver. -- LEW
  22. About a month ago I purchased Reference RB5 II, RC3 II, RS3 II & Synergy KSW12 From a local authorized dealer(an hour drive away) which I found on the Klipsch dealer locater section. They carried Synergy but not Reference, but could order them. I had done my on-line homework and had the list prices jotted down. The manager went to "see what he could work up" and knew I was ready to order if I could get a deal I was looking for. He came back with a price that was about 10% off list price. He saw my other figures on my paper & asked what they were. I told him they were from an internet dealer (I also included the shipping & handling with the figures). He went to see what he could do which probably included going on-line to check out my figures. In any event he came back and said he could match the internet prices without the S&H. I said we have a deal & about 10 days later I was a happy Klipsch owner. Also on the plus side with the local dealer _ I had ordered the RB5 in Cherry and they arrived in Black. The dealer let me take the Black ones home so I could enjoy the sound while waiting for the ones in Cherry. I also purchased a Denon AVR 3802 from the same place and they also matched the internet price on that. It was a very pleasurable experience dealing with this store - they called me to let me know the status of my order - I didn't have to keep bugging them. I will definitely be going back there for any future purchases. Sorry I got so long-winded. It's been a long journey getting the set-up I wanted. Couldn't be happier with the sound. Also this site has been most helpful.- LEW
  23. I just purchased the Reference series about a month ago & I'm loving it. I have the RB5 II. Until recently I've been using the set-up for home theater. Now I'm finally getting around to listening to music (stereo & 5 channel stereo). I spent most of yesterday listening to The Byrds Box Set. Those Richenbacker ( not sure of spelling - I was a drummer)guitars sound great through the Klipsch speakers - they just seem to sing out on those early tracks. The early country rock styles are fantastic. Over all I'm hearing so much more in the music than I used to hear. I'm not up on the terminology - maybe this is what is referred to as greater definition. I do know what my ears hear & like. I'm off work for 2 weeks & I plan to spend most of it jammin! --------------------- Speakers: All Reference except sub Mains - RB5 II Center - RC3 II Surround - RS3 II Sub - KSW12
  24. OK guys, what would be a good introductory CD by Diana Krall - I keep hearing great things about her on this site. I'm basically a classic rock kind of listener, but my interests extend to jazz, country & classical (sorry I draw the line at opera - just can't seem to get into it). And I flat out love the blues - B.B.King, Buddy Guy, etc. Right now I'm waiting on a CDNOW order: Pink Floyd - Echoes, Martina McBride - Greatest Hits, & Stories - Best Of. Told you I had diverse interests. Anyway please make some suggestions re: Krall. I'd love to check her out. Thanks
  25. Wes & Gil, Thanks for the info on the sub, carpet & sub placement. The store called tonight & advised that the Denon 3802 is in but they're still waiting on the speakers. I live about an hour away from the store so I think I'm going to wait & pick up everything in one trip - maybe. I think experimenting & playing with the system is going to be half of the fun. I have a pretty extensive collection of music that I'm anxious to hear all over again. My old system (Harman Kardon receiver & Bose 601 speakers) is 21 years old. This should be like night & day. Plus I'll actually be able to watch DVDs with 5.1 sound instead of stereo.I think I'm entering a whole new world. Thanks again guys. Lew
