  1. Nope. I have a Denon 3802 & Klipsch RB5IIs, RC3II, RS3IIs with a KSW12 sub. Still need to upgrade my TV & DVD player. The sound kicks pretty good. I uaually demo the system with "The Matrix" the lobby shootout & helicopter scenes & "Pearl Harbor" battle scenes. Most of my friends & relatives sit there with their jaws dropping (after they're done ducking for cover). I use The Eagles HFO for a good concert DVD. Even those who said they didn't like The Eagles seemed to gain a new appreciation for ther music & sound. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll This message has been edited by lovedrummin on 09-12-2002 at 12:37 PM
  2. I have the RB5-IIs, RC3-II, & RS3-IIs with a KSW12 sub. I'm very satisfied with this set-up. I think it's great for music & movies. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  3. In reference to The Doors I'd suggest "The Soft Parade" CD. The title track is great & has some fantastic percussion. In addition to ELP's "Pictures At An Exhibition" & "Brain Salad Surgery" CDs, check out Trilogy. I always liked "Hoedown" alot . This was a great show opener. I saw them at Merriweather Post Pavillion, Columbia, MD summer of '72. They opened with "Hoedown" & I've loved that song ever since. That was one of the songs I used to audition speakers when I was shopping. I also used The Beatles "1" CD for acoustic work & harmony. Also took Linda Ronstadt's "Hasten Down The Wind" CD. "That'll Be The Day" was always a great rock song with good guitar riffs. Also her version of "Crazy" always put me in another zone. You could almost hear her breathing in the vocals & Don Grolnick had a wonderful piano solo. Sorry I got off track. These kind of threads always get me tripping down memory lane. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll This message has been edited by lovedrummin on 08-31-2002 at 08:21 PM
  4. I just finished watching this. Excellent movie. Overall PQ & sound are very good.IMHO this flick packs a wallop as does Saving Private Ryan. Found myself getting all choked up & not just at the end of the movie either. Not too many movies do this to me. It just left me feeling alot of different emotions that I couldn't begin to describe. To me it was just a powerful, powerful movies. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  5. Mike, Sounds like you & I have some pretty similar tastes in '70s music. I also have a large collection of albums mostly ranging through the '60s, '70s & '80s. I'm hoping to retire at the end of this year. So I'll get back to trying to get my collection in a database. Going through it with a collector's guide. And I'm sure in the process I'll be listening to some of those oldies but goodies - sorry, I mean classics. I'm interested in the cleaning equipment you were mentioning - Nitty Gritty Mini-Pro & the VRP record sleeves. Where can I learn more about these & are there any good internet sources to purchase them? Some of my vinyl has seen better days due to my youthful ignorance in not properly caring for them, but alot are in excellent condition. I want to preserve what I can. Any info would be helpful. Thanks ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  6. Ken, My favorite has always been Linda Ronstadt. She covers a wide variety of styles from country-rock to big band and Mexican. My favorites are "Heart Like A Wheel", "Hasten Down The Wind" and "What's New" Also check out her Trio recordings with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. Hearing those three harmonize is just beautiful. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll This message has been edited by lovedrummin on 07-25-2002 at 08:31 PM

    Hart's War

I watched this one this past weekend. At first I thought it was going to be a cross between "Stalag 17" (always liked that movie) and "Hogan's Heroes". About the only one missing was Schultz. Actually I enjoyed this movie. It had some different twists and turns. The plane fly-overs were good and so were the barking dogs in the surrounds. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  8. Steve, boa's suggestion of using internet prices as a bargaining chip is a good one. I took a print-out of the internet prices with me when I went to a local dealer & he matched the internet prices for the speakers (without s&h). I have RB5-IIs, RC3-II, RS3-IIs & KSW12 sub. There was about a $550 difference between his first offer & what I finally paid. Nothing ventured - nothing gained. I had also purchased my Denon AVR-3802 there also & he matched that internet price as well. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll This message has been edited by lovedrummin on 07-09-2002 at 10:21 PM
  9. kenratboy, I have the Denon AVR-3802 powering RB5-IIs, RC3-II, RS3-IIs & KSW12 sub. I think it's a great system. I'm really enjoying the sound of both DVDs & music. With the music I occasionally use the DPL II, the 5 channel stereo & 2 channel stereo depending on my mood. The 3802 seems to be a very versatile receiver. The RB5-IIs sound great for electric & acoustical instruments. Enjoy the journey. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  10. I checked out the CD version. Liked The violin work. I'd still rather listen to an orchestra doing some of the old classics. I have a wide variety of tastes. My neighbors think I'm schizo when I crank up the system & go from The Beatles to Beethoven. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  11. From that same time period I always kind of liked Deep Purple's "Machine Head" with Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, etc. This is out on DVD-Audio and sounds awesome. The bass will give your sub a good workout. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  12. Thanks for the info guys. Although I was more interested in buying 1 or 2 dvds at a time, I may have to go the box set route. I'll check out the link tblasing. Thanks. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  13. Does anyone know what's up with the old James Bond DVDs. Like availability & price. Seems that the older ones (Sean Connery) are hard to find and Amazon is listing these at anywhere from $40 to $55(Goldfinger). Used are about $10 less. Seems kind of steep. Have they been pulled for possible re-issue? This has me baffled. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  14. PENGUIN, Thanks for the review. I was an avid Spiderman comics fan as a kid. Can't wait to see this one on the big screen and there's very few I'll go to a theater to see these days. I'm sure I'll end up buying this one when it's released on DVD. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  15. Try T2 - good explosions. Also Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor - skip the mushy beginning and go right to the battle. You'll think you're in the middle of a war zone. The next one on my list to get is Armageddon. I've seen/heard this one on a VHS tape through a surround system and can't wait to get the DVD. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  16. Jobman, I'm not too concerned about the speed & noise of the player as long as it functions ok. Wait til you hear Hotel CA. The guitars just sing. You'll think you're in the same room with Felder & Walsh. One of the songs has some strings on it - The Last Resort? The strings sound really good on DVD-A also. The drums have good punch to them too. Vocals. Hell, I got so caught up in the instruments, I forgot there were vocals. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  17. Jobman - I have the Hotel California DVD-A. Get it. You won't be disappointed. Also recommend ELP's Brain Salad Surgery & Deep Purple's Machine Head. That last one will give the subwoofer a good workout. Thanks for the info on the FA-90. Does the changer operate OK? Heard on other sites it may be slow & noisy. Thanks again. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  18. I currently have an old KLH 5 disc DVD player and I'm drooling over new ones by JVC. A buddy of mine has a 7 disc JVC XV-FA95 (gold) and seems to be pretty happy with it. I've been looking at the JVC XV-FA95(gold) & XV-FA90(black) both 7 disc players and also the JVC XVSA75GD(gold) & XVSA70B(black) both 1 disc players. I can't seem to make up my mind if I want to go with the single or multiple disc player as one of these days (don't know how far in the future) I hope to add a CD recorder with a 3 disc tray to my set-up. Listening to CDs is when I really need something with more than single disc capacity. All these players have progressive scan (good for future TV upgrade) and DVD-Audio. I have several DVD-A discs and love them. Can't wait to hear them on a player with DVD-A. Has anyone on the forum had any experience with any of these JVC models? If so what is your opinion and pros & cons of these players. Thanks in advance for any info. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  19. Yeah! ZZ Top's One Foot In The Blues is a cool CD. I can still remember the first time I heard Brown Sugar from their first LP. Buddy Guy (old stuff & new Stuff)is a must. There are alot of players who have copped a few of his licks. If you like slide guitar you might want to check out George Thorogood. Blues - I love the old & the new. Today I was listening to the 2 CD Bobby Blue Bland "Anthology". I started getting into his music years ago when I saw him warm up for B.B. King. Speaking of Muddy Waters - I was fortunate enough to see him perform years ago (OK so I'm an old fart)at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA. It was billed as An Evening of Blues with Muddy Waters, James Cotton & Johnny Winter. Muddy was great on guitar as Cotton was on harp. Winter on this particular night got away from his high powered blues rock style & was playing some really cool, laid back slide guitar. Just fantastic. What a night. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  20. You guys are talking about Jeff Beck's "Blow By Blow" & "Wired" - Great albums, but does anybody remember the real early Jeff Beck Group with Ron Wood & Rod Stewart? How about the "Truth" & "Beck O'la" albums? Some pretty good blues-rock there. I know - I'm showing my age here. Another favorite of mine is "There And Back". Saw Beck at the Spectrum in Philly for that tour & he had Simon Phillips on drums. That was a cool concert. Another trivia tidbit - check out the movie "Blow Up" by Michealangelo Antononio(?)- not sure of the spelling. This was available on VHS at one time - not sure if it's out on DVD. Anyway there's a club scene (I think The Crawdaddy Club) with the Yardbirds playing. Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page are both in this particular Yardbirds line-up. It's kind of a cool, artsy 60s film. If you can find it, it's worth watching to see J.B. torture, mangle & destroy a guitar. Ah, here I go time tripping again. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  21. I have the KSW12 on pretty thick carpet & padding. They are definitely not killing the sound of the sub. Every time I watch "The Matrix", I'm ready to duck & run (especially the helicopter crashing into the building). This bad boy rocks out with music too. You ought to hear it kick out the bass on the DVD-Audio of Deep Purple's "Machine Head". I'm very satisfied with the way the KSW12 performs. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll This message has been edited by lovedrummin on 02-25-2002 at 11:04 PM
  22. boa, Thanks for bringing up Waddy Wachtel. Meant to put him on my list and forgot. I'm a big Linda Ronstadt fan so I've heard him quite a bit on record/cd and seen him many times on tour with her. He's also done alot of work with Warren Zevon and numerous other sessions. I also have an old album by the group Ronin which was baically Waddy with Rick Morotta on drums, Dan Dugmore o guitar & pedal steel (now doing alot of country sessions i.e. Trisha Yearwood & Martina McBride both influenced by Ronstadt)from Ronstadt's band & Stanley Sheldon on bass from Frampton's band. Cool group. Saw them at the old Bijou Cafe' in Philly a couple decades ago. Great studio musiacians but unfortunately they never caught on as a band in their own right. Waddy is a real rocker at heart. Enough of my ramblings and time tripping. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  23. I bought the RB5-IIs back in October (along with the RC3-II center, RS3-II surrounds & KSW12 sub). Fantastic sound, great for home theater & for listening to music. I've been getting back into my CD collection (classic rock, jazz, blues, country & classical) and doing alot of listening in stereo setting. I originnally had my RB5s sitting on a couple of plastic milk crates with a piece of plywood on the crates just to get the speakers off the floor. I thought that sounded real good (compared to my 20 year "old" Bose 601s). Today I got a pair of Sanus 24" stands & put the RB5s on them - Whoa!!! Big difference. I'm waiting for my wife to leave the house again so I can crank those babies up. So - my 2 cents - I love the RB5s & highly recommend them. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  24. Some favorites in no particular order: Clapton, Beck & Page The 3 Kings - Albert, B.B. & Freddie George Harrison James Burton Muddy Waters Steve Cropper Robby Krieger - highly underated Bonnie Raitt Susan Tedeschi Elvin Bishop Billy Gibbons Roy Buchanan Mick Taylor Buddy Guy - awesome in concert SRV & brother Jimmie Joe Walsh Peter Frampton Jimi Hendrix Re: Eric Clapton being a "boring Delta wannabe" 1)IMHO you don't sustain a career spanning over three decades by being boring 2) listening to & reading about E.C. and his contemporaries is what made me seek out and listen to Albert, B.B. & Freddy King as well as Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Elmore James, T-Bone Walker & the list goes on... To me, like them or not, Clapton & his contemporaries have helped carry on the torch - carry on the blues. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
  25. I have the RB5-II speakers in medium cherry and they look great. My wife even commented on how good they look and she could care less about any a/v equipment. The RB5-IIs sound fantastic. Enjoy your speakers. ------------------ Lew Not Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll
