  1. So far, anything by Diana Krall or Holly Cole and everything produced by Dave Grusin and especially if he plays in it and if it's on GRP.
  2. La Scalas run 6 ohms for most of the range between 50 and 400 Hz. You've asked the amp to drive an inpedance of 2.4 ohms for most of the audio spectrum and its protection circuits say NO.
  3. You can use a multimeter if you remove each tweeter and test it. A ball park figure would be 6 ohms DCR for a tweeter. If its more than 16 ohms, I'd suspect trouble.
  4. Look at partsexpress.com and at their plate amps and 15" sub kits. I'd build 2 for La Scalas.
  5. NIN (Nine Inch Nails)is beyond my tolerance. i've never even heard of the other groups y'all mentioned. Showing my age, Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, "Heroin" should work well enough.
  6. formica, Whatt'l ya trade? I have one Heresy with a -EF and another with a -R. I'd like them to match.

    Wary

Mail him a print out of the ebay auction and offer to trade him $250 for the kit and equipment. Unless you've exchanged too many bad nouns, you can salvage the friendship. 25 years is worth more than $250.
  8. I'm a little interested in 2226s, but not enough to pay for them yet. I'd like to hear from someone who's put a pair in La Scalas. The data sheet I have calls them 97dB/w/m. That's a half a dB louder than what I have on the K-33.
  9. Hey Tom, What do you think about the JBL 2226H(?) in a K-horn/La Scala? The numbers look pretty similar the the K-33 and it has a stiffer basket and higher power limit. It's $$$, but might shine when rockin' hard.
  10. Delta, Not to be ugly, but we're not your concierge. After you've done some research, you really should ask, "Is XXXX a good place to buy Klipsch from the internet?" Or, "I used 3 search engines and couldn't find anything, does anybody know where I can find zzzzz?" Klipsch has a policy against selling over the internet except in very limited cases, so I doubt you will find the Reference Series on the 'net.
  11. Scooterdog, Hoping you have not made any fatal errors, ...... You can test a cone loudspeaker with a 1.5V battery to see which terminal is +. The cone moves forward when the + of the battery is connected to the + terminal of the driver.
  12. If you buy the B&K, skip the receiver and buy a proper preamp that is of quality equal to the B&K. You will have no use for a receiver with the power amp and no use for a power amp with a receiver. If you buy the B&K and want to morph the system into a home theater, it will fit right in. You'll have to buy a Preamp/processor and another amp or 2, but the B&K can stay. That sounds like an ST140, a nice amp.
  13. One of the problems is that all MP3s sound bad and the lower the sampling rate the worse they sound. The lower sampling rate and file size is the reason MP3s exist, but because of that no MP3 should be used to judge the quality of any component. Just like all computer stuff, GI-GO.
  14. I'm not too familiar with Klipsch testing and rating procedures, but I'll bet 2.83V was used in the old rating, even thought it was labeled 1 watt. The voltage is easily controlled where the current, and therefore power, is not. More than likely, the efficiency of each speaker are the same even though the rating method *appears* to change.
  15. It's gonna be good! Trey, the newspaper pic was good. It brings back a flood of memories. If you can come, do!
  16. fisch, They must be pushed tight into the room corners to have the bass they are intended to have. The wall extend the bass horn.
  17. "How does $52 sound? About right? I am not saying it is the same as an audiophile one that costs $1000+ but it has improved things and in conjunction with the surge protector I use will suffice for me." I'm betting itIS the same or as good. We have our neuroses about audio equipment and the manufacturers feed them with expensive fixes so we will "get out money's worth". What is the brand and model number so we can check it out. I use an APC LineR 600 power conditioner on my PC that is 600 VA and cost about $100. It does voltage compensation and some smoothing.
  18. My front trim is a piece of 3/4 x 3/4 inch solid cherry. The grilles are the newer removable ones held in with velcro. We found out when doing my brother's La Scalas that my finish is actually MinWax red mahogany under sprayed, water-based satin polyurethane.
  19. I power my front array with an HCA-1203A and the rears with an HCA-1000A. They sound great! The amps are dead quiet, the bass is tight, they sound clean and I don't hear any harshness. If you use the Denon as a preamp, you may not achieve much. The Denon amps are not bad and you will need a better preamp/processor to take advantage of the Parasound amps. Although the HCA-2205 has MOSFET output transistors, it is beyond overkill for any Klipsch speaker.
  20. Use a multimeter to check the voice coil resistance of both tweeters after they have been disconnected from the crossover. They should read 6 ohms +/- 0.5. Is the sound from the tweeters distorted? Do you hear any rubbing (ringing) sounds? That could indicate an overheated voice coil that is partially stuck in the magnet gap. You'll need new diaphragms to fix that. If that's O.K., look at the screw terminals for corrosion and clean it off. Last, resolder the connections in the crossover for the tweeter circuit. Test after each step to see it that one worked. The last resort would be to completely rebuild the crossover with new parts.

  22. I don't believe connecting the x to ground is the same as 4-0 in that autoformer. Have you built your own Type A? If you have, you must change the squawker cap every time you change the autoformer tap. Only with Al's crossover, using the swamping resistor, can you change the taps without other changes. If you have Al's crossovers, you should keep his polarity. The attached file is a crossover schematic I can recommend.
  23. They look like Dogg Digital speakers and probably sound like them. I know of no where you can listen to them. They get a lot of noise on one of the HT forums, but that doesn't mean they sound good. The owner of the company posts there and each post raeds like an advertisement.
