  1. [Y][Y] I have the RF-7IIs and I also experimented with large and small and yes in my setup as well large sounds way better and fuller! And while the 7s have good bass it isn't overpowering or that deep rumble in your chest bass so it blends nicely with my subs. The sound stage seemed to open up way more and they sounded way bigger....had that majestic sound.....but I also have a separate amp powering my 7s.....I understand the reasoning.....boomy bass or possibly having your AVR distort from having to work harder.....but neither applied to me or you it seems....as others have said.....follow the guidelines and see how it sounds but experiment....that's the fun thing about our hobby.....there are so many things you can change from positioning to crossover to enhancement modes etc......and they all sound different to different people.....one may like the changes while another hates it.....the guidelines are there to get you started....to get your feet wet.....and while you may be satisfied with the sound there is nothing wrong with writing down your settings and then tweaking a few things to see what sounds better.....that's what I did and that's how I got my systems setup to sound their best. My 82s also benefited from the large speaker setting.....alright I'm done blabbing []
  2. Yeah I would call Klipsch or newegg for warranty service. I have two of those subs and even when they are in standby once you hit a button on the display they turn on.....even if the keys are locked the sub will turn on but will say "keys locked hold <> to unlock" so it may be something else if you're not getting a reading on the display....shine a flashlight on the display without hitting any buttons.....the screen should say standby if its truly in standby mode.....if not then hit a button just to see if it responds....flip the main power switch off on the back of the sub then turn it back on....display should light up with the model (klipsch rw-12d) and the firmware.....if it doesn't then check the fuse....it could be blown. (its on the back of the sub as well) if its blown then replace it with the same type.....if it isn't then I would make a call and try to get warranty service. Is the sub in good shape? and marks on it like its been dropped or anything? I know in some rare cases the amp jumpers may come loose from rough handling (had that happen to me on one other klipsch speaker but they was a small dent on the speaker where it had been dropped) if you're courageous or impatient like me then you could unscrew the amp and check all of the connections....but you need a sercurity bit......just some suggestions....taking it apart is a very LAST RESORT. I would do those other things first.....in that order....and finally if the fuse is fine then call and see what klipsch and/or newegg says.
  3. really? I'm glad it helped you out though. Be careful though using standard def tests to calibrate a hd tv....I had a hard time giving up my Avia II DVD but I was able to get a way better picture with the blu-rays....not sure why (i think it has to do with the way colors are processed) but my settings were way different when I switched to blu ray discs. Both blu-rays confirmed it.....while the picture looked good (and better than factory settings) the settings were wrong with Avia (after being fine with sd) and hd calibration gave me an even better picture. Nonetheless its all about what looks good to you. So I'm glad you experimented and found what works for you....At least you know now that automatic is better in your case instead of wondering. [] And yes while the calibration discs will help you get a picture thats close to "standard" set by the industry so that you can see things the way directors of movies, shows, etc want you to see them it also helps to add your own personal touch with small tweaks sometimes. I've gotten used to the darker film like picture on my tvs because it looks good, natural, and colors still have enough pop to look good but not so much that it looks unnatural. But my dad (like most other people) always comments that my tvs look dark because he is used to that bright punchy picture. Likewise my gf who spends a lot of time there as well loves the picture as I do....it does take some getting used to but it does look better imo. Lol. I guess my point in my long winded response is to calibrate to get a baseline.....give it a few days....if you don't get used to it then tweak to get a picture you like. The baseline has been set so as long as you don't drastically change things your picture will still be better and a cool side effect is that it will always use less energy. (confirmed by my avr) Happy watching to you though. I'm about to go fire up the projector....get some food and watch some movies!
  4. Congrats! There is nothing like getting your theater setup. Just wait until everything is hooked up and you sit down for the first time and crank it! Let us know how it turns out. One movie you should get if you don't already have it is......Master and Commander on Blu-Ray.....put it on....turn it up....and let your ears enjoy the Klipsch ectasy!
  5. Both TVs are great. As others have stated turn off that clear motion and other picture enchancement features and that will get ridof that "fake" look. Also if you don't already have one then go to amazon and buy a couple of calibration blu-rays. Spears & Munsil and DVE Essentials. Spears doesn't have sound calibration at all (thats where DVE comes in) but has a ton of video tests. DVE does sound and video so you can start off with Spears....then check your video settings with DVE....then calibrate your speakers. Thats what I did and I managed to get a great picture on all of my tvs and my projector. IMO once calibrated the picture the picture on both LEDs and Plasmas are pretty even. True Plasma will have the blackest blacks but the quality is very close. If you want to make blacks appear darker on your LED or any tv for that matter then you can buy some of those ambient lighting led strips that attach to the back of the tv.....that actually makes the tv look even better! Plasmas do use more energy if you're energy conscious but IMO you can't go wrong with either. But before you take that LED back calibrate it with those discs and see how it turns out....or if you're really couragious then you can get a CalMAN set. LOL. But seriously take your time with those discs....get everything adjusted and if you feel comfortble make a few minor adjustments to the color biases to get the best greys possible on the grey tests....then check the color and everything should look more natural! But it will probably be dimmer than you're accustomed too!
  6. I knew those pics looked familiar. I was like where have I seen the RF-7/RF-83 combo before. LOL. Congrats tho. It made me smile to see that. I didn't even realize you were on facebook. I guess all I have to do is go through the list of likes on the Klipsch page and I'm sure I will find most forum members. LOL. Congrats again!
  7. Yes the 82s sound great too! They have a nice soundstage and dynamics but if you go with an 82 setup don't listen to the 7s....I had an 82 setup in my theater room but moved them back to the bedroom once I got the 7s and yes the 7s blew them away....nonetheless the 63s are good speakers as well. And since you can't get the 64 center then yes your next step would be the 82 iis that were suggested unless you can find a great deal on a regular 82 setup or a rf 63 or rf 83 system....the 63s and 83s were the flagship speakers of last generation and though they are hard to find when they do pop up its usually for an outstanding deal. My parents have the RF-62 setup and it sounds surprisingly good as well but it does lack a little presence but will still blow just about any comparable system out the water. It still has that movie theater feel and sounds great and thats with one RW-10d. But of course the bigger you go the more presence the speakers will have and they will be more in your face. 62s would be the smallest I would go though. As others have said though if you keep an eye out on audiogon, the garage sale section of this forum, and even ebay and craigslist then you're bound to find a great deal on some used stuff. Thats actually how I got my 82 setup.....all used stuff from this forum and ebay. Heck you will probably even find a good deal on a 7 ii setup....enough of a deal that your wife doesn't mind. But I'm done blabbing
  8. As a RF-7II owner I can tell you that if you do jump on a pair then you probably will be satisfied....satisfied enough to hold off the upgrade bug for awhile....when I first got the 7s they did sound a little bright but have warmed up nicely over this past year. Sounds great for 2 channel music as well even tho you already have a 2 ch setup. My 7s are paired with a Harman Receiver and an Integra Amp. Another option for your surrounds would be floorstanders. Sometimes you can find better deals on floorstanders than on bookshelf or true surround speakers. I have a pair of RF-25s as my surrounds and while it isn't the recommended wide dispersion design it still sounds great and the sound still envelops me. Just another option if you have the room. But yes the RS-52s should be fine. My parents have the 42s and those are amazingly loud as well so I can only imagine how loud the 52s and 62s are.
  9. Did you get this issue fixed? Does your avr have hdmi? While its roaring have you tried resyncing the signal by switching sources or by turning it off and then back on to see if the roar stops? I know occasionally my Harman receiver will have trouble syncing or will lose hdmi sync for a quick second and when it re syncs the audio isnt always synced correctly I guess so I get a staticy/roar type sound from my speakers until I switch inputs and switch back. (like from blu ray to cable and then back to blu ray.) But that rarely happens....It could be the amp but I don't think so. If it were the amp then I feel like it would roar after a set time no matter what. Like after a warm up period or something. As far as the light thing goes I'm surprised it didn't power on before when you plugged in the cable. All of my klipsch subs (i have 4) do that. And yes they are 2 different models. But if I have the sub in standby if I plug in a cable....even with the avr off it powers on....i figured it was just the auto on electronics being really sensitive since its monitoring for any change on the inputs....plugging in or removing a cable causes a slight change....even if its only for a millisecond....Nonetheless let us know how the sub worked with the 2 channel rig.
  10. Another thing you can do is use two stands together.....that works out pretty well for the larger centers
  11. Let me know when you get the sub if everything checks out! I've been eyeing that same deal. Guess they had more than one! I may have to jump on it next week if its still available
  12. IMO I don't see why DLPs are getting a bad rep from some folks. I have friends that have DLPs and once calibrated the picture looks really good and the viewing angle isn't too bad. Especially with 1080p content. As far as the light thing I don't think they wash out anymore than flat panels. Now the depth thing yes they are thicker....and you can even throw in noise. They are a little noisier than flat panels because of the fan. And every set has lemons so I don't think they are crap compared to flat panels. If you google any of the models you will get forums with people talking about the problems they had. I have a dlp front projector and the pic on it is amazing as well. The flat panels have a slight advantage in sharpness but thats with front projection.....not rear projection. Also IMO the Samsung sets have the best pic followed by LG and Sony. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of those choices. A dlp or flat panel. You will get more bang for your buck with the DLP but with either choice after you do a basic calibration the pic should look amazing. Also if you go the route of the retractable screen I would recommend a tensioned screen bc regular screens can eventually start curling up. But they are more expensive than regular screens so you will have to shop around if you have a budget.
  13. Here are a couple of pics of my completed setup. Finally got everything situated. Last item on my list is the RC-64 II center......and I must say I could be wrong but I don't think there is anything better than using floorstanders as your surround speakers.....While the RS speakers sound good too I love my RFs as surrounds! Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  14. I have a RC-35 that I use with my RF 82s and I mean it does a good job for me....Now I haven't heard the RC 62 but the 35 is no slouch...it has pretty good clarity and quality. It easily hangs with the 82s....now the setup is in a smaller room so idk if that makes a difference but if you get the 35 I don't think you will be disappointed!
  15. Oh ok. I gotcha. Well the elite cinetension 2 acoustic screens are kind of expensive...but the prices I've seen from doing a quick google search range from $1100 to $1400....so that sucks....but how about this? How handy are you and how much room do you have in your theater room? I'm sure as you already know fixed screens are a little cheaper. So have you thought about building a false wall of any sort? I know it sounds like a ton of trouble but you could end up saving a lot of money. Setup a false wall to hang the fixed acoustic screen on....with a recessed cutout for the La Scala.... Or you can do the wall paint thing....they do sell the "screen paint" for the walls that will allow you to paint a screen on your wall....and you can even paint or build a border around it....if you build one velvet does the best job at absorbing ovespray light from the projector....I don't think it will match the quality of a screen but I do think it will be better than the sheet. I have heard mixed reviews on the screen paint. But the people that take their time and do it seem to enjoy it. If you don't want to do any of that I guess the sheet will do. LOL. Only thing that matters is keeping YOU satisfied.....congrats on your projector purchase as well...nothing can beat a 10 foot screen! I also have a 120" screen with my projector. Movies and gaming are great but I always have to readjust....when i go back to watching my lcd everything seems so tiny! lol. Anyways hope your theater will contine to bring you lots of joy
  16. You won't have to spend $1600 on a motorized screen but I would recommend you get some kind of screen. They do have cheaper good quality motorized screens such as those made by Elite Screens...You can also search the internet for other direct dealers...but I had my projector projecting onto a wall for awhile...and the quality was great...but once I put up an actual screen the picture got a little better and held up better against sunlight and ambient light. Not only that but my sharpness improved and everything in general seemed better....my blacks seemed blacker and my colors had more "pop" to them....I toned it down a little by calibrating the projector but everything still looks great and still has that dlp pop....so I can def say it will make a difference. especially over a sheet because even tho it looks good a sheet allow a lot of the light to go through it.....I guarantee once you get a screen the detail of the picture will be even better....including shadow detail etc....so just look around....not saying spend a fortune on a screen but I think the investment will be worth it....plus if you have to have some ambient light in the room the screen will hold up better to light and will not wash out as easily
  17. I'm really surprised no one has mentioned JVC or Optoma. Optoma projectors are pretty good. Don't have all of the bells and whistles of some of the more expensive projectors such as lens shift etc but they have really good picture quality once calibrated. I have the HD65 model which is a 720p model projector. The picture was good before calibration but once I got a screen and used my calibration disc to adjust the contrast, brightness, rgb gain etc the picture was outstanding. Now lighting control is needed for this projector as well but in a dark room you can't beat the big screen experience. brightness would be brighter if I downsized my screen but i love 120" lol. I upgraded from a 40" Samsung lcd tv....now the sharpness is a little on the soft side compared to the samsung tv but thats the only complaint I have. Also with that model being an entry level model the shadow detail is a little disappointing too. Details in dark movies or scenes tend to get lost and blend in with the black....but overall I'm impressed. I was worried if the pq of the projector would hold up to my lcd. But it does. I do have a friend that has a JVC DLA X3 projector and wow....pq on that unit is pretty amazing. All of the DLA projectors get rave reviews. He only uses his for movies...I use my optoma for everything....games...movies...and comast hd....to maximize bulb life I always run the fan at high speed and only turn it on if I'm going to run the projector for a hour or more....short watching sessions kill the bulb life....all in all I think you would be satisfied with a projector...as far as aspect ratio....can't really comment on that...since i game and watch comcast hd I prefer 16:9....but have no complaints when watching blu rays that are 2.35:1 because with the image being so big the black bars don't take away from the movie experience for me....hope that helps.
  18. No the gaps occur on everything. HD programming, Hd gaming etc....but as I said they are less than 1/2" on the top and bottom. I do not have overscan enabled tho and as I said it could be that 16:9 isn't perfect on the projector bc with projectors you can shift the image up or down so I think the black bars are basically the "extra" pixels for shifting the screen. It looks like it is perfect without a screen but when I projected it onto the screen I had those really small gaps on the top and bottom unless I zoomed it out a little and overshot the screen......when I run 2.35 I get 2.35 but as I said the bars on the top and bottom are bigger but I don't notice them. You can def tell that you're watching a "wider" picture but at that size it still looks great. Of course it would look better with a native 2.35 screen and a lens bc you're not wasting pixels to show the black bars but I don't watch enough movies on it yet and I do too much other stuff which has the 16:9 ratio.....
  19. They seem to match it pretty closely but I could be wrong since I only have a 16:9 film....but I can say that the 16:9 does not match up to my screen perfectly. I have really tiny gaps at the top and bottom so I just enlarged the pic a tiny bit.....as far as absorbing enough light to render the overhang invisible....the black borders on retractable screens are not good at absorbing light. It does absorb some light but you can tell you have overhang....once i got my fixed screen which has a black velvet border it was 100% better. Velvet does an amazing job at absorbing overhang and you will not be able to tell! Hope I helped!
  20. Yeah I think the Sherrif got it the worst at the end of the movie....whew where she put that shotgun had to hurt! But yeah I'm not sure what determines the "popular" encoding formats.....bc for DVD DTS sounded better than Dolby but yet it was very rare.....now on Blu Ray they both sound about the same but DTS is the one on most Blu-Rays....I'm surprised that they don't have both on Blu-Rays now since they have up to 50gb of capacity on the disc. Nonetheless this generation it doesn't matter bc they both sound great! The only time I get pissed is when I don't read the Blu Ray specs and get home....and discover that the audio track is Dolby Digital! The last movie that surprised me with lossy sound was the Punisher.....
  21. I have a 120" screen and I only sit about 11 feet away and have no problems....pic looks great and I can't see the pixels....even from 5 feet away I can't see the pixels! lol. I'm also in the minority......I have a 16:9 screen and love it bc I also watch a lot of HD tv on it AND I game a lot too on PS3 and Xbox and even Wii.....so the 16:9 is great. And I also stream a lot too so Netflix and Hulu HD are all 16:9 as well.....I like the 2.35 format but I actually prefer the 16:9 Blu Rays such as Avatar etc....nonetheless I am the same way as the others.....when it is pitch black in my room I get engrossed in the movie...and I never notice the black bars.....but I'm not as picky or sensitive as some folks tho. On TVs the bars are so noticable but on projectors not so much...especially with a really good screen. Not sure if its the size or something else.
  22. I have to agree with the others....as soon as I got a sound system I switched off my tv speakers and never looked back. As others have said if you use an HD box and run HDMI to ur receiver then you can get Dolby Digital. Or with a regular box you can run optical (usually) and get Dolby on some channels...but yes...pretty much all of my HD channels are Dolby Digital...so yes it does sound great on my 7s...especially when i turn it up. Movies, sports etc all sound great.....now on the few channels that don't have Dolby Digital...my receiver goes to Dolby Pro Logic which sounds decent....but doesn't sound quite as good and balanced as Dolby Digital which has more separation of the channels....so if you have HD service and a HD box then you should be satisfied!
  23. I wouldn't mind seeing the ports too!
  24. I have to agree. The 6ow ere very powerful speakers and have a pretty big soundstage. I used the older RC-62 with my RB-61 IIs and it all meshed together very well and it almost seemed like the 62 is the center made for the 61s instead of the 52. And another good thing is if you ever get the room for floorstanders and upgrade then you'll already have a more than capable center as the 62 II will work fine for all the floorstanders except for the 7 IIs.
  25. Oh ok well hopefully Netflix will get the Dolby on a lot more films soon. Amazon has it on pretty much every HD film (or at least everyone that I've streamed) but I haven't seen it on non HD films. And I'll have to go and check out the 1080p on netflix! Haha Angry Birds is very addictive. You know they're supposed to release the other Angry Birds games on the Roku as well plus some other games. Can't wait to see what other games they add. (I believe that Angry birds is the only game available at the moment)
