  1. Thanks again, Edster. I'm in no rush with this tube amp thing, my solid state keeps me happy. Hell, who knows, maybe I need to grow up a little more and let my musical tastes refine. I know I will come to the point where I will rarely listen to thrash, butI will always want it there. I don't do that Commercialized airplay crap that is pumped off as 'heavy metal' Korn, Limp bizkit, whatever. The first band I liked when I was in 2nd grade was Deep Purple. It would be rather tough to drop everything and start listening to classical, Right? Or that little girl lesbian acoustic folk snivelings, Right? But I do need to explore different venues. Tiny Triodes? hmmmmm......Kits? THANX!
  2. "Tube Geeks and Trolls." Welcome to the Klipsch bulletin Bored. With the general attitude towards Solid State, don't you feel kind of like a outsider, EARS? I get that kind of feel. Just what is so bad about SS anyway? I'll admit my Yamaha amp is nothin' to brag about. But it sounds clean, has balls. And if it's too bright, then I'll play with the Passive crossover to pad accordingly, or turn down the treble on the Pre. I wish there was somewhere nearby I could discover and listen to the "Magic" of Valve amplifiers. I'm curious to what it's all about, and if it's actually that magical. Anything to add to this Complex Audio Issue, Forrest? That last post seemed insulting in a nice way.
  3. Have you listened to any tube amplifiers? If you can go somewhere and listen to some Tube gear nearby, I would take advantage of it. There is no Tube amplifiers to check out where I live, unless I drive to the west side of State. This Sucks, because I would like to check out Valve amplifiers, before I dive into purchases. And the only way I could afford these amplifiers, is if I bought in kit form, and nickel and dime my way to the finished result. What kits are good to buy? Hell, I thought the Moondogs would be great idea. Buy the upgrade kit first, the the naked kit, and then Tubes.(Good quality, of course.) It would take forever, but It's the only way my poor self can do it. But now I'm told that these particular amplifiers won't fit in my musical/listening criteria. So what ever you pick up, post your reports. I'm curious, because I feel our listening levels and music criteria have more similarities. (We like listening at slightly higher SPL.) Still, I don't think listening at 80-95 decibels with a little more in peaks is such a terrible thing. Good Luck!
  4. With the popularity of Cornwalls, and the prices they net on Ebay, and the way they seem to be getting sucked up, I'd jump on it. kh reported a pair on Ebay for $1850. They are not depreciating by no means. Look them over real good though, and always hit him for less. My geuss is, in about two years, the Cornwall is going to be a real chore to find, at elavated prices as well. IMO.
  5. Thanks, you guys! I feel a lot better. Colin, you made some excellent points, with the extended harmonics of instuments and voices for that matter. Ear, Our musical tastes much coincide, which demands a extended bottom end. Too bad I'm not using subs at the moment. THANX!
  6. Most audiophiles around here don't even like subwoofers. It creates a 'Imbalance' in the system.
  7. Whoa! Behind all the Jazz albums, Mobile Homeless is kind of a Rock Monster after all. I have some Jesus Lizard, found out about these guys from the Melvins. (There's a band that will make you cringe in your rather refined musical booties!) Ya know Kelly, these are some great band choices, I'll have to check these out, if easy to obtain. I'm listening to Iggy Pop right now, Is this too heavy for your taste? Dog Faced Hermans, these guys aren't bad, I picked this up a couple days ago. I gotta agree, Indie labels are way to go. Do you seriously think I listen to 114 decibels of music all the time?(Or even 100?) Have a good one!
  8. Maybe so. But also understand that I don't listen to 106 decibels with the volume hiked up to 10 all the time, if ever. What SPL are you listening at? I guess if the Moondogs can't keep at least a consistent 80-95Db's with higher peaks, then I geuss I should look elsewhere. Thanks for the reply.
  9. No Kelly, I'm not much for Commercial Airplay Music. But you got to understand, I listen to material that makes Creed seem like Choir Boy music. Preferably Independent Labels, also. Can the Moondoggies still hang? (I don't need to offend everyone in the neighborhood.) It's a 12'x14'x7' room, no need for gobs of power, either. What label is SMOG under, BTW? Thanx for the reply.
  10. How would a pair of Moondogs fare with a pair of Chorus II's? They claim to be 101 decibel efficiency. THANX!
  11. I made twisted Cat 5 cables 12 gauge, I seem to like the sound of these over the 14 gauge audioquest I used. The audioquest seemed grainy sounding. I went through all the trouble of making this cable, of course it's gonna sound better. IMO. But I agree, you can get fine wire at Home Despot for speakers cheap. Just make sure the wire doesn't look oxidized. Good clean looking copper. You do agree that corroded wire will affect sound quality, right Gil? THANX!
  12. Most crossovers I know of have only one input. Although I have absolutely no experience with these particular brand of pro-actives.
  13. Well this didn't turn out to be too helpful. With a little browsing on the subject, I'm certain you can find some interesting DIY ideas, Colin. What's up with this Forrest/Theears situation? Does it even have to do with Audio? I don't get it.
  14. Like horn loading in front of the woofer with the box, to get more depth in the bass frequency?
  15. Don't feel alone. Hint: The net is a vast wealthy resource for tube amps and thermionic design. The Svetlana site will get a good start on parts inside a tube, and how they fuction. Get prepared for information overload. THANX!
  16. Gee Edster, your jammin'! I'm around this same zone, maybe 5 Db's less. 80 to 95. That post of mine measuring 114 116 decibels, is a rarity. It was the first time I pushed it too ten. It never goes past nine. (In a 12'x14'x7' room at 116 decibels is dumb, you can't relax.) THANX!
  17. Yes, Colin, you have seen a lot of music in your time. Man. Is that why the Greyhound doesn't change buses from minneapolis/St. Paul to Seattle? Due too lack of culture between the two?
  18. I couldn't see a pic from your link. (I get the idea.) There is all sorts of DIY things for damping speaker resonances too. Sandbags, hunks of marble or granite on top, inner tubes and the same as above on the bottom. You think it would dampen a sloppier enclosure. weird.
  19. Okay, so maybe most folks who just want music,(non-audiophile)are perfectly happy with these. They save a lot of space, blah blah..... But I think it does not justify $1299.99 MRSD price. You think they put that much money into the construction of the 5.1 and the bass module? I guess the tooling for the plastic injection mold presses could be spendy. LOL! (I wonder if human hands even touch these during assembly.) If this twelve hundred dollar system was lowered to about $300, it would make a great PC system! I think that Bose and their marketing schemes a good part of how audio has been 'Dumbed Down' over the years. My two cents.
  20. Is this Bi-wiring from a Receiver with A and B speaker outputs? Or two amps/receivers? Bi-wiring with the same gauge wire from A and B speakers to a speaker setup for Biamping wouldn't make much difference, IMO. Maybe if you tried a larger gauge wire for the bass section of the speaker, you might get some more guts out of the bass or something. I geuss you could play with different combinations of wire, cheaper than a amp, nonetheless. THANX!
  21. The Gorge at George, yeah, I know that place. Right in the middle of the worst place in Washington. (I'm sorry, It is nice there, I'm just not much for the central WA scabland look.) Went to Lalapooloza there when they had Primus, Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Junior, and whatever the hell else they had. (Spent 1/2 the show out in the lot gettin' drunk.) 90 degrees, the show was out in the parking areas nearest the Amphitheater.(not in it.)3 inches of dust,(the mosh pit looked like a bonfire from the dirt being thrown up.) They would spray water on people, then they were coated with mud. We had a great time. Would like to go to a show in the Amphitheater. Seen Derringer once, in a local bar in Spokane. (I was too drunk to remember Acoustics, I just remembered he was fat.) They used to be the Spokane Coliseum, it was torn down and it's now 'The Arena'. Seen a lot of shows in the 'Boone street Barn' (Coliseum.) Metal trash cans have better Acoustics than the barn did. But the best 'sounding' shows I remember in this place was Yes in the round, they had the speaker system in a circle above the stage, in the center of the building.) Otherwise, they would blast the speakers against the back wall. So ya had sit in the back horseshoe to get any decent acoustics. Another show that 'sounded' excellent believe it or not, was Slayer. Of all the years sittin' in that horseshoe, Slayer was Clean, Dynamic and the kick drums moved our hair.(they blew away Megadeth and Anthrax soundwise.) Seen Type O in the Met once in Spokane. Great show, body numbing bass. I seen Tool just recently at the Arena, we were on the floor. It sounded really good near the mixer or behind it. But as you worked your way toward the stage, all those bass cabs would start coupling in your ears. (Looks like the Arena horseshoe is the best bet also.) It's a good thing Tool has a lot of different things going on in their gigs, they are quite boring to watch otherwise. Metallica and the cult were the worst. (Turn it up all the way, so they can't tell how sloppy we are.) I seen Metallica outdoors,(Monsters of Rock.) They sounded great, then. I been to four shows in the last ten years, as opposed to dozens in the 80's and 70's. I know how ya feel, guys. It is depressing after a good live gig, and you go home and your illusion engine just don't quite cut it. I need to check out the local Spokane classical orchestra, it could be a real acoustical trip! THANX!
  22. I know the Ears replied to Tom's post about Audio Heritage. (He liked the K2's.) And Tom's post seems to be chopped off. ???!!! Are you moderating, Kelly?
