  1. #1 Good for You. I have also given away stereo setups and some "Brooms". If it's not good enough to sell, it's not good enough to give away. I did throw a boom box off the second floor once, didn't want it coming back in the house and wouldn't give it away. #2 Your a lucky man to have your wife interested in your hobby! Mine likes what I have, but says I need to find a new Hobby. She just don't get it. Got a collection of brooms, stereos and still looking. Still have the 1st pickup I bought in high school. 1st wife I ever married. Don't know what I'd do for another Hobby. Not about to start chasing Women, too dangerous! Again, Your a lucky man to have your wife interested in your hobby! [Y] SuBXeRo I like the SS from the 70's hooked up to TV and stereos in upstairs living room. Have tried home theater and don't care for it personally. But hook up 2 good stereos, Marantz or Sansui, 4 good speakers, and both SHMBO and I are happy. Wife likes this type of setup better then home theater also. Maybe someday it can be tubes upstairs. But Marantz Quad doing the job at present.
  2. Thanks for all the opinions. I believe I'll pass on the 240 and keep with the 2 mc 30 s. Still have other units to listen to that I've not hooked up. Just hate to disconect the mc 30 s.
  3. I also have a set of speakers laying on the side. Only way to place them where I wanted. No complaints. High WAF with the setup. They are rear speakers in 4 speaker set up.
  4. Yes I have 2 mono 30s. Presently running a Marntz quad in upstairs living room. Have considered using that pre amp to feed the tube units and swap some of the other units in and out for grins and giggles on the Khorns. Marantz, Sansui, Pioneer if my son doesn't take it for x-mas I do not have the mc275. my tube gear consists of 2 mc30s, and one The Fisher 400 Marantz SS are 2270, 2323, 4270. Gave away a 2285B after having it gone though. She wanted something to "Hum to" Sansui SS are 9090, 9090db, G6000 and G7000 Pioneer SX950 to make a matched set for my son at X-mass If he wants it. He smoked one, so I bought him another and had the 1'st unit fixed.
  5. I've got mc 30's running Khorns, but looked at Mcintosh 240 today. 1 How would this compare with the mc30's? How do the 2 compare, pro and cons. 2 Over all outside appearence looks pretty good. Very minor pitting and a few little scratchs on Black boxes, Has cage over the tubes. Asking price is 1800 or make offer. . Any idea what would be good counter offer if I should try to obtain this unit? 3 Looks like original tubes. Man at the shop said they played it without any issues and that the transformers didn't even get hot. Of course I would have to spend some time and listen before making any final decision. Presuming it is still available next week when I get back into town. [^o)] 4 If I should decide to obtain this unit, what range $$$ can I expect for tubes. I know nothing about what is good and what is not. Which would be tubes to desire and which to avoid. I Have an abundance of receivers and know that I am addicted to hoarding the old units. They may not keep me warm on a cold night, but at least they can sing in stereo and if I get tired of listening to them....just push a button, throw a switch and problem solved. [6]
  6. I have some old 30 watt tube amps. One night I was not in good mood. Turned the volume straight up, I'd guess 15 watt? Wife came from other end of 6 bedroom house to complain that people weere trying to sleep. Way too much volume to listen to most the time. I've never opened up to the full 30 watts. The Khorns are Great speakers. I never thought I'd be lucky enough to own a pair. Count yourself as lucky, and keep both pair![]
  7. Ignorance is my claim. Is this difficult to do with 60s and 70s amps. I would presume in my case that Fisher 400 should be used for tweets mc30s for mid range and sansui or marantz SS for base, 100 + watt unit? [*-)] I have read of digital active units. Confused. Output from CD player is analog as is turntable.
  8. For the same reason some of us drool over 59 Caddy's. Not for everybody though.[H]
  9. I can't help. But I do like changing stereos around and trying different systems. Currently listening to Marantz 4270 Quadradial 4. Seems it sounds the best of the old stuff I've tried upstairs. The big plus is SW THINKS SMBO Likes this system. Khorns and tube system in another room. Beware of the addiction that can come from surfing this site. I love the old stereo's from the 70's, most. Have pet Tasmanian Devil on guard duty! [6] Officer at work drooled all over himself just looking at pictures. Opps! Back to helping this Gentleman spend his $$$$ on stereo equip.
  10. I have no Ideal about the product you mentioned, but I did build a spike when I was one short. Don't know where the little devil went to. But you can take a bolt, or rod stock, put it into a drill press. Then use a course file, suggest a very course File and file the rod while it is turning in the drill. A small hand grinder would probably work even better if you are careful not to get your project too hot. Not perfect but works. After filing to a point, you can trim the other end to get all spikes to the same lengths. Can also solder or braze a washer to use as a stop where it meets speaker. Where there is a will there is a way. Some thing in the forum would not let me state type of file I used but it was a B@st@rd file. Which is the proper name for it.
  11. By the time I got out of there I was pretty crosseyed from looking for scratches, but I'm sure I got some records out of the classical section. Just to ignorant to be able to look at some of the records and say 'That's' classical. But I'm sure I got some big band, and artists that I've listened to. I guess I need to make a list, play and see what I like. I know I got some horns, symphony, and some of the artists must be classical. I know I have some from the 20s or 30s on up, and some music that was written prior to that I think. Don't matter, rock, country, blue grass, old stuff. Just don't play no disco or rap for me. [:|]
  12. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. This is probably a time for crying. In time you should be able to look back and remember the things that made her your friend. Maybe even smile remebering some of the things you've done together. Never forget the good times the two of you have had. I wish I knew how to take the pain away. John
  13. Seen the sign at thrift store. All recordes10/Dollar. As I was inspecting for scratches, and anything I might be interested in, I asked an employee if it was 10 cents for the box sets also. Yes it was! I got a chair and looked over everything I thought I might be interested in. Some off the albums had never been opened, and others looked like they had never been played. Anything that looked like it was scratched was rejected. $6.50 later I left with 2 boxes. Now I wish I had a good record cleaner. Do have a hand wipe cleaner, and also some of those yellow costco lint free rags. was given an old record player. if the turntable turns, would this be ok for cleaning records one side at a time?
  14. SPEAKER OF ROOM TREATMENT John W. Henderson: How about tapestry on the walls to reduce reflections? I was surprised when I opened my Cyril Harris book (Handbook of Noise Control, 2nd Ed., 1979, McGraw-Hill, Table 21.1). It lists typical acoustic absorption coefficients for several architectural and acoustic treatment materials as a function of frequency. The absorption coefficients for heavy tapestries were fairly uniform all the way up the audible spectrum - even more so than Dow Corning acoustic fiberglass panels. My understanding of the density of the tapestries that Harris tested is that they approach the weight/thickness of relatively thick bed comforters but are not filled with "fiber lite" man-made material, but instead something that is like heavy cotton or wool batting. John W. Henderson: Possibly one inch or 2 from the wall? Actually, if the tapestries are made of heavy material, spacing them out from the wall would actually be preferential: this is the same technique used in bass traps. John W. Henderson: Or would it be better to mount something like this on insulation board? You don't need to mount them - in fact, they may be more effective acoustically if hung from the ceiling or from a curtain rod near the ceiling. They do not need to be "mounted". My $0.02 Chris
  15. Laugh all you want, but check out Pendleton Woolen Mills. If you like Indian type wall hangings, you might find something you will like. You can call them and order hanging tabs for curtain rod hanging. Hang them about 3 inches from the walls to dampen the sound. Lots of nice patterns. I have given some of these as gifts. If you decide to go a similar route, make sure to get natural material, not man made fabric. Someone suggested calling this a "Martha Stewart" treatment, then someone else chimed in that they had looked up in a book they had and natural wool/cotten works better then comercial sound treatments. If I find the response I will post another reply. I am in no way affiliated with Pendleton. By the way, nice looking room you have. Tabs are sewn so blanket hangs with label in lower right hand corner. If you would like tabs sewn on differently than this, please call customer service at 1-800-649-1512 with your special instructions. www.pendleton-usa.com
  16. I've seen some examples of both that would cause me to turn and run!
  17. So dtel, Do you remeber the breed of chickens you had? I think some more aggresive hens might be helpful. We did have an aggressive Roster that used to attack the wife, she used to have to carry a stick for protection. Our neighbor saved it once when a hawk had it pinned down in her pasture. Beat the Hawk off with a stick. The wife told her to let the Hawk have it, too onery! Wife puts the older chickens on a retirement plan. As long as they live she keeps them. The chickens get a lot of free range, but usually keep to a couple acres of the property. They have been known to range over to the neighbors from time to time, but nobody complains. When theres extra eggs we share. John
  18. emailed Carl, and thought some of you might enjoy this true story. Gods own truth with no BS or stretching the tale. SHMBO said she seen about 30 mice in the chicken coop. Well, I thought This just can't be right. I went out and looked and I think she miss counted. I must of seen 45, and they did not seem too afraid of me. I told the wife she must be feeding the chickens too much. She needs to keep them hungry enough to eat mouse. Then I went to town looking for some steel shot for a 410 broom. Either let the Judge with lasor sights, or a old bolt action 410 to clean house. Nobody seems to carry non lead shot for the 410 brooms. I can't use lead as the chickens would eat it and get lead in them and the eggs we eat. Since I gave my nephew my 20 gauge, I had to settle for 12 gauge broom food, #6 shot size. Of course I couldn't 'sweep' them while they ran up the walls to the ceiling, but got a bit of 'sweeping' in anyhow. At one point, my wife asked, "Did you get him?" Really, 6-8 feet away with a 20 inch broom, rifle sights and has a pattern a little smaller then a dinner plate at that range. All I could say was "I don't see him anymore." I chased one of the little devils around from inside to outside and back for 10 minutes before I could get a clean shot that would not put a hole in the wall, but I finally won the chase. [Y] When I came back to the house, Broom in hand. There was a couple pulling up in the driveway. I should explain that SWMBO runs an Adult Foster care home and these were strangers who were looking for a place for mom to stay. I explained about the mice. Didn't seem to bother em. In fact they want the room for mom. When I came in the house, there was a lady from the state, doing the annual inspection. SWMBO aced it again, perfect score. Talking with the wife later and she said the lady from the state was kinda concerned about the shooting sounding pretty close. Chicken coop is almost 100ft from the house. My wife explained that it was just me cleaning the mice out of the coop. The next day when SWMBO let the chickens out, she didn't see any mice at all. Maybe they moved out, or had heart attacks, though I doubt it. Anyhow I do have more #6 mouse loads just in case. And Yes Carl, The coop is still standing. No extra holes in the walls or roof. All of this is True with no [bs] or stretching the facts. [H] By the way, my broom is a Benelli with pistol grip.
  19. Have a few speakers. Not as many as a lot of folks on this Forum. I consider the Bose the bottom feeders of the collection. However one of the cats like to sleep on them so I guess their not totally useless. Currently banned to a closet. Not good enough to give to someone I care about. I think they are 1972 601's. Just gave a set of La Scalas to my son, now those are worth giving to someone you care about if you can't use them. It's all about Karma.
  20. Yep. Gotta love the blue light specials! It's not like Kmart's. I was in the little stereo store and just looking at a marantz. Don't remember which 2270 or 2285b. Anyhow Linda told her brother to turn it on. Well that Blue light set the Hook and I walked out with another unit. []
  21. Excellent Ideal! If all internal boards are same width, you could also just make top fork long enough to mark the center of internal placement. I prefer a Tri square to measure placement of internal boards, add additional measurement to locate center. Draw line, then adjust tri square back to support internal board while placing 1st screws at each end. However I've never built any base horns. My tri square limits me to about 18 inches.
  22. My wife said I never get rid of anything. Well she is amost right, I still have her. (A little advice for those that don't already know. NEVER, NEVER reply "I still got you don't I?" when wife is complaining that you never get rid of anything. TRUST ME ON THIS, I KNOW) As for selling things it just does not happen much. If I like someone enough, I might give them something. Got rid of a few 'Brooms' that way. Gave my cousin a marantz 2285b and some Paradigm Phatoms with a CD player to go. Nice Lady who takes care of her stuff. I know they will have a good home. 5'1" and just got herself a New Harley Super Glide.
  23. Glad to hear someone has tried it with Khorns, that gives me a bit more confidence that it will work. Now I just need two more amps..... I need 2 more amps like I need 2 more wives. The info is good. Have enough receivers and amps to swap around. If I had another wife or more to swap around I think I'd be in big trouble. No analog, digital or anything else would save me.
  24. Have Mac 30's running K Horns. Have heard of Bi-amping, but has anyone ever Tri-amped. Or have opinions on it. Don't get me wrong, I like the MC 30's with the K Horns, but am wondering. I have Fisher 400 25watt tubes, the Mac MC30's 30watt tubes, and for SS, Marantz 2325 (125 watt) or Sansui 9090 110watt, and 9090DB 125 watt that could be used for the base. Opinions, Taunts, or any comments welcome. [6] John
  25. If it will fit, It's a Book shelf speaker. Currently have a pair of Beovox S75's set side ways in book shelf. They stick out on both sides but they fit. Sound pretty good for bookshelf speakers too. Tried another pair that had to be set on top of book shelf. Took both my wife and I to put them up there. Too close to the ceiling and poor speakers. Sounded like something I once stepped in, or was it bose. I was always afraid that if something shook the house and they fell, injury might occur. [^o)]
