  1. I received a pair of Bob's new tweeters a few weeks ago and just got around to installing them...Kind of, that is... They were safely re-packed into the box they came in so I wouldn't lose or damage them before installation. Well, with both tweeters in hand, and all the intentions in the world to install them, the most unthinkable happend..One tweeter decided it didn't want to handled anymore and wanted to be free. As it was falling to the floor, everything around me went into the "Matrix Super Slow Motion Mode". No problem I thought to myself, with my cat like reflexes, I should be able to catch it before it hits the floor. The cat-like reflexes failed to kick-in this time. All I was able to do was to catch a piece of the tweeter's lense and thus put it into mighty spin that was moving equidistant from my outstrectched hand. With things still moving in slow motion, all may not be lost. There may be a chance that it may make the carpet and land safely..No harm no foul!! Nope!!!! It hit the hard-wood floor just inches from the nice plush carpet. The sound of broken platstic brought everything back into normal time as well as a plethera of obscenities that could be heard for miles. So, Bob, you will be receiving a wounded tweeter that needs some fixing. The piece that broke off was mostly confined to the wing were the screws are inserted. JJ
  2. Count me in.. This will be a good tune up before the Hope gathering. I will only be able to attend the Saturday Festivities. It will be a long day of driving (14 hrs round trip) but I don't want to miss this gathering. JJ P.S. I'll also confim via e-mail to you, Boomac.
  3. Just finished the Hobbitt for the billionth time, so I won't answer. But I'll throw another one out there for you all.. "This thing all things devours, birds, bees, trees, flowers, gnaws iron, bites steel, grinds hard stones to mill, slays kings, ruins towns, and beats high mountain down". What is it? JJ
  4. Why, are u insane?????[6] Not insane..Just broke []
  5. I have e-mailed the seller but no answer as of yet. Can't do much more than that... JJ
  6. MUST RESIST!!!! They are way too close!!! Fighting Temptation... JJ
  7. Meagain: It was a "Wow" change in my opinion. Most of my listening with the 3801 was with the Cornwalls in 2 Channel Stereo and also Direct mode. For movies etc, it was very good. For music, the sound was fatiguing and harsh. I used the main's pre-outs on the 3801 and powered them with the ST-70. Using both 2 Channel Stereo and Direct, the music had more depth and detail. I could now listen to a whole CD's at a time than just one song. This also held true for the other amps and speakers I have. Just for reference, the Cornwalls are the only speakers that I have that have not been modded in one way or another. JJ
  8. Bob: You have been given great advice thus far and can't really add much more than what has been already mentioned. But I can add the following: I own Belles, Cornwalls, and also K-horns and have powered them all, at sometime, with the following: -Dynaco ST 70..Slightly modded but closer to stock. I used my Denon 3801 as a preamp for 2 channel and I heard things that I never heard before (good things, that is) with just running them through the 3801. Music was much more tolerable and I found my self listening to music more often and also longer. The ST 70 was my first experience with a tube amp. Cost of the ST-70...$450.00. This was the beginning of the dreaded "Upgradeitis". I thought that if my 2 Channel system sounded this good with a weak pre-amp (3801) a tube Pre-amp would be the cats meow. Thus, the Peach was introduced incorporated into the mix. Just as as I expected...The sound was incredible. This is the sound I was always striving for and things were great. Cost of the Peach..$999.00. I ran this set up with my K-Horns and my Cornwalls. In the mean time, I aquired a pair of Belles and needed a quick and easy-cheap fix to power these beauties so I bought a cheap Teac A-L700p chip amp to mate with the Peach to drive the Belles. Granted the sound wasn't as great as the ST-70/Peach combo but was very tolerable for the price. Cost of the TEac Amp $89.00 SInce my 2 rigs are in different rooms, I got sick of lugging the Peach back and forth and so I needed something else to power my Belles. A 2nd Peach or Blueberry would have been the ticket, but there was no way I could afford it. This prompted me to find a good clean-functional integrated Tube amp. Luck would have it that a fellow forum member had a Scott 299c for sale that had been modified/refreshend by Craig @ NosValves. It was just as I expected..Great tube sound and me and the Belles were/are in heavenly bliss. Cost of the Scott 299c..Approx $450.00. So, Bob, all I can do is give more input on what great experiences I had with different power sources driving the Belles. Some options are in your set price range and some are not. I'm in no way saying that you are wrong in your reasoning but just want to make sure you explore all your options before selling the Belles. SInce everything is totally subjective, you may find it very useful and entertaining to take GaryMD offer to audtion his set-up. I think you'll be impressed. Good Luck Bob on what ever you decide to do. JJ -
  9. Hey JJ, I understand you own a 'Peach' Pre-amp? - I am itching to hear one in my system. Would you be interested in a visit to my place in the near future to see my basement and try out the 'Peach' with my speakers and amps? Let me know, Kevin Kevin: I would be glad and honored to take you up on your offer to view your newly re-done basement and I'll bring the Peach for you to try out. I'll send you, via e-mail, my phone # so we can setup a time. JJ
  10. Hey JJ! How are those Belles working for you? Have you got around to changing out those type 'AB' crossovers yet? The Belles are working out great, Kevin. Just need to get my basement done so they can "spread out". I have a few issues to work out in regards to the basement..low ceilings, floor jacks every 6 feet, heating and cooling location problems etc... As for the crossovers, I have a set of BEC A/AA's on loan from LWhaples. They made a world of difference. I knew the AB's are not the most desireable crossovers but after hearing the A/AA's, there . Iis no turning back. Once again Kevin, you have done well with your basement transformation. JJ
  11. Since I'm third in line, I'll offer $450.00!!! [] Just Kidding!!!!! I just wanted to say thank you for offering them here first and of course, the offering of free shipping. JJ
  12. Looks mighty fine, Kevin. The basement looks a lot different than when I picked up the Belles this past summer. JJ
  13. Oscarsear is dead on. Having been a Mortgage banker in a past life, it was very important to verify down payment money for all those reasons mentioned. Your time will come at the closing. Question all the charges and make them explain everything. JJ PS. The lending Institution should give you an Estimated Truth In Lending Statement at some point so go through it with a fine tooth comb and make sure you understand it fully.
  14. Can't add much to what the others have said.. GET THEM RIGHT NOW!!!! I paid $650.00 for my brand new KLF-30's and thought I got a great deal... This is a "MUST BUY"!!!! JJ
  15. I'm a Northern Boy who knows little of what a REAL BBQ is ..So..What the heck is Yard Bird? I'm assuming we are not talking about Robins, Chick-A-Dees, and Sparrows [] JJ EDIT: It finally clucked..I mean clicked..CHICKEN!!!!
  16. Very Nice Patrick!!!! You have done well upgrading your system since last years Pilgrimage. There are quite of few things I have on my wish list (VRD's, decent CD player, entry level Vinyl set-up, etc) but commonsense has kicked in and no more purchases until I get a garage built. Once again Patrick, great job with all your recent acquisitions. Please post more pictures when you get a chance!! JJ
  17. Hi: Thank you all that gave some tips on how to change out the tweeters on my '78 K-Horns. Seeing that it isn't as bad as I thought, I'll be buying a pair shortly. BEC: I think you should change your screen name to Mr Gaunt, the character from the book and movie..Needful Things. You seem to have just what people want/need. [] Hopefully you won't start making us do crazy outlandish things in order to obtain your wares. Thanks again everyone!!! JJ
  18. I apologize in advance if I'm hijacking this thread but I have a question.... When installing the new tweeters, are you taking off the top section? In looking at my k-horns, there is no way am I going to be able to swap out the tweeters w/o some dismantling. My arms are long enough to reach, but have a major problem with the dexterity part. [:$] JJ
  19. Meagain: The K-Horns are KB-Walnut Oiled. After comparing the the two oils (Watco Danish Oil Natural & Tru Oil) the Tru Oil has a darker reddish color and also a little thicker. (a lot like a syrup). I didn't mix anything into the Tru Oil. The Tru Oil doesn't give the ingredients but it does mention Linseed and other Natural Oils. Your guess is as good as mine what 'Other Natural Oils' might be. I will borrow a camera and will post a couple of pictures, soon. Please understand that the rest of the speaker surfaces has been stripped of the 'Crud" that the prior owner used to oil the speakers, so they appear dull and dry. I only did one of the top sections w/the Tru Oil. JJ
  20. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!! Ricktate: I was told from a very reliable source at Klipsch, that the oil finish on '78 K-Horns (maybe other years as well) was Tru-Oil. A very common oil that is used on gun stocks. I did buy a gallon of Birchwood-Casey Tru Oil and experimented with it on one K-Horn Top Section. It applied nicely and it didn't turn out too bad. Just a little darker Red than what I wanted. Thanks again!! JJ
  21. Nope!! There are still the same pair I rescued from bad home over a year ago. Slowing chipping away at them in efforts to get them into tip top shape. I've learned a lot over the past year tinkering around with these. All that is left is to patch some small nicks along the top of the bass bin and replace the edge banding. ( a Watco Danish Oil bath is on the list as well.) I almost did buy a pair of really nice BR K-horns that were local but commonsense kicked in at the right moment. I don't need or have room for anymore speakers of that size. JJ
  22. What would/should be the correct width for replacing the edgebanding on K-Horns? I do realize that it should be a little wider than the exact measurement but after looking at the widths available, I would have a large excess that would need to be trimmed off. Is there a point where being too wide becomes a detriment? Thanks JJ
  23. Here ya go!!! http://home.earthlink.net/~ivol/klipsch_cornwall/klipsch_date_codes.htm JJ
