  1. Scrappy, call Emotiva and ask. My gut says this is a bad idea but I'm not sure exactly why. A/B switch sounds like a winner.
  2. RH thanks for the input on 3D. I think in a home setting, 3D can have more impact. My theater going 3d experiences have revolved around my 12 yr old. Course we go see the latest greatest animation shows for her. And always in 3D. The ONLY times I've enjoyed the 3D experience is when I can sit in the middle of the theater and close enough so that my personal viewing angle is filled up with the movie. This helps draw me into the story. If I'm way far in the back, I can see the ceiling, walls, other people etc etc. We just saw Wreck it Ralph this weekend and there were several times that the 3D experience enhanced the movie and it was acctually enjoyable. Had great seats just like above. So to this, I think it is much easier to replicate in a home environment. You can tailor your seating distance to fill up your view which helps give you the full 3D feel. Are you going to try Avatar? I haven't checked any reviews or anything...just figured as stunning as it can be in 2D, maybe the 3D rendering was awesome.
  3. To include the XPR-5 (400W x5) from $1999 now $1699!!!! http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amplifiers
  4. Dude that's a bummer. Follow-up on that offer from your friend though. You'll find a big jump from your Heresey's in the larger Heritage line.
  5. Scrappy, did you ever get to that Heritage listening session? Impressions? I know I love my LaScallas more for 2ch in a straight AB comparison. Also heard Khorns and 402 Hirns on top of a KPT-904 LF bin.
  6. Run it again, and maybe once or twice more to see if you are getting consistsnt results from the setup. Several variables that can mess with a calibration. Change of furniture, calibration mic stable and in the same spot, positioning of the speakers, many more. If you're happy with the sound after that but the new volume levels are different and stay at that same level of different, I'd stick with it and enjoy.
  7. I was able to score my RSW-15 from a forum member. Well worth the 11hr round trip. Plus, enjoyed the chat and the HT demo. It is supremely musical just like many have said. Fast, accurate and blends in great with the rest of the RF setup. If I had paid $1k for this sub, I would be in no way disappointed. It is good for HT. I have a 2000 sq foot house and a a 1/3 power, it'll disturb every room in the house and the neighbors. I've played warhorse and book of Eli for friends and family and they were just astounded. I know it misses some lows but taking steps in the right direction. Great sub!!
  8. Call Mike at Acousticsounddesign and see what he can do for you. This RF-62 set is running $2,395. Includes a sub which you don't need. He always has better prices over the phone. http://www.acousticsounddesign.com/core/view_BigProduct.cfm?pid=2003&sc=27
  9. Didn't consider them because after picking up a pair of RS3s, I decided I liked the room filling sound of wide dispersion technology that Klipsch has done. Bookshelves and most ceiling speakers are more directional. Plus, I know I will have a media room someday that they will be properly mounted. So compromise till them. Still very satisfied.
  10. Youth, mark my words, your next speaker excursion in your home will be LaScallas. Heritage conversion is imminent.
  11. I have the same comprimise and for now, I just don't worry about it. Behind my living room is the kitchen so the whole thing is wide open. Wires are run from the front of the room, around and under the base board, then beneath my couch. Their is some exposure between the baseboard and couch but I have a small rug covering that. When I pull the wires out, I use two rugs to cover so they don't get tripped over. "Ideal is a dedicated room. Don't have one yet but when I do, I already have a paid for HT to go in it." ~Most Interesting Man In The World
  12. Here is an option for surrounds (my compromise because of WAF) I use speaker stands for the surrounds. http://www.amazon.com/Sanus-NF36B-Inch-Speaker-Stands/dp/B00092HW9G/ref=pd_cp_e_0 They get put up in the spare bedroom when not in use. Click on my name to see how they are setup in my living/family room.
  13. 2nd on accessories4less. Mine is a factory refurb. ZERO issues!
  14. Youth, I have Netflix and like it for some things, but the compression of the audio falls short when I really want my system to help tell the story. So in that case, a very simple trip to redbox. Like a $1.65 or something. And, you can jump online for free to figure out what you want, the it will show you the nearest kiosk with the Bluray disk. No monthly subscription to boot.
  15. The roku is just certain stations on the web. Netflix, Hulu, YouTube etc. Apple TV allows you to "mirror" what is on your apple device to the TV. I have several iOS devices so the mirroring was a winner for me. I like to stream certain sports events and the lil stations you get don't cover it all.
  16. Ive been very happy with my Samsung 42" 600 series LCD. I get compliments ALL the time when people come over. Set in a large living room with lots of ambient light.
  17. I'm not sure how much BER (bit error rate) comes into play when going from digital to optial but it is a coversition so I'm sure it exists in some respect. Also, I won't be transmitting from an online cloud. It will transmit wirelessly from my PC, to the apple tv unit, which will be the receiver. Out of that, it goes HDMI directly into the DAC. I guess the optimal thing would be to leave out the wifi upconverstion and just go straight HDMI. The upconverstion to the wifi transmit frequency may inject errors into the signal, just as the other types of media conversion do. Would it be bad enought to be audible...don't know. It be interesting to put a BER tester in line just before the DAC. It would need an HDMI in and out for a throughput. Then you could compair the wifi vs straight HDMI. Or, going fiber for that matter. Also, I understand jitter and timing. We have dejitterizers in my line of work. (even if I didn't spell that right...)
  18. For Home Theater, the two most impactful speakers in your system will be your center channel, and your sub. Get the best your budget allows in these areas. For your Left, Center, Right (LCR), you want your front sound stage to have timbre (pronounced timbur) matching up front. This is done by matching the speakers that produce the mids and highs in your front 3 speakers. In a perfect world, we'd all have 3 of the exact same speaker up front to accomplish this. But many of us can't have a 3rd floor standing speaker for a center channel cause it just doesn't fit. Thats why the horizontal "center" channel was invented. The effect of timbre matching is that you won't notice which speaker the sound is coming from as a car zooms from left to right. You'll just know it zoomed from over there to over here. If you don't have timbre matching, it may sound more like, "oh, the train is in the left speaker, now it's coming from the middle speaker, oh, finally it's over in the right speaker." For the KG4 series, I belive the KV series were "designed" center for them. Like a KV3 or so. Welcome to the Forum!! Stick around and enjoy. There is a ton of knowledge here.
  19. Alright, I should have thought that through. So avoid the optical converter. HDMI is digital so that'd be the best choice with this setup. Thanks Speakerfritz! So apple tv does send video also. I wonder if the audio and video are combined to one signal or kept separate while they are passed through HDMI to the DAC. I know it's on the same cable but different wire paths inside the cable. Wifi is very convenient. Trying to minimize the compromises.
  20. So the lil apple tv box has HDMI and digital audio out. Two questions? If you use HDMI, that means there is some processing that happens before it hits your DACs? And if you use digital audio out, it continues to pass it digital, with no processing, then feeds the DAC so you get the best lossless transmission to your DACs? Trying to make sure nothing happens to it before it hits the DACs. I've chosen to use apple lossless for my digital library.
  21. There is so much more to good LFE from a sub than just adding another one. I've not heard either of these. On paper, the rw-12d extends lower and has more power to do so than the sw450. Sub placement and room treatment will do a lot for managing bass in a room. Also, integrating two subs is not plug and play. Audyssey XT-32 boasts that it does this well.
  22. Alarms are another layer of detourent, just like dogs, exterior lighting, not leaving your garage door open, leaving empty boxes for expensive things on the curb for the trash guy, neighborhood watch...etc. take things like that away and you become a "soft target". Alarms are a good piece to a balanced approach.
  23. I roll them up and use masking or blue painters tape to bundle each up individually. That type of tape doesn't leave the annoying sticky residue. They are all in a box.
  24. ASD would prob have you around 3.9k. Just call them. Mike in particular.
