If you are taking out your original LS baffle for the mid and tweeter, or just routing it out, be aware that there are ring nails holding the piece in place. I'm not sure how long they are, but it sure wouldn't do a router bit much good to hit a few nails along the way.

Bernie, I'm tempted to sell the AL crossovers. I'll never use them, and somone just might like them. Put a pair of Bob Crites CT125s in for tweeters, but I think I'll keep the K77s. Right now I stuck a pair of Eminence APT150s (same driver as Bob's) on top of the cabinets to time align with the K55s. Sounds great, and they are just mounted in some little baffles. Doing ok, but I'm ready for summer. Starting a rebuild on an ST-70, but had other projects in the works. Spend more time with my gf, even though she is working half a world away teaching in China. These labeled as Brazilian Rosewood look a lot like my old '63 D-28. It is really dark. My guitars with Indian Rosewood are very different from each other. The '75 Guild is beautiful, but more red, while the early '90s Taylor is more like the Brazilian in looks, but a lot straighter grain.

The pic I showed already had the cap replaced. I should have posted a pic of the bad cap. It was rather obvious who the culprit was. I would have a harder time with many of the other components on these guys, as they are mostly surface mount. I have replaced surface mount parts before, but it is a little tricky with my small iron I use. It is low voltage and pretty low current, so the small connector itself isn't that much of a problem.The Neutriks for POWER are the bright blue, and called Powercons instead of Speakons. This is to help keep people from plugging power into their speakers. [:|] I used to diagnose and work on 3 phase motor controllers for the textile industry. EDIT: Looks like I'll have to be taking it apart after all. The mutes are acting up. Could be they've been messed with too much, but it may be part of the mute circuit that is causing them to mute at inopportune times. Probably something in the circuit as I can't believe all 16 mute buttons are messed up.

I realize you added the tube rectification, but what was the major omission? You mean different than what is posted on the website?Bruce

My speakers are only 6 1/2 feet apart (center to center), with 2 feet more on each side of the room. I actually get a wider soundstage that way, compared to having them farther apart.I sit a little over 10 feet back. Well, I'm not too embarrassed. I'm going to listen to those tracks again. I'll see if I still think your recording sounds sterile [*-)] btw, I bumped the original challenge so folks wouldn't have to hunt for it... Bruce

Thanks, Don. ALL I can find wrong with the LX7 is one knob missing, and one other rotary pot (for the talkback level feels a little wiggly, but it still works fine and there is no noise from it. I think this boils down to... It's old, and newer is better... I haven't read the manual to learn how it really works so it sounds like cr@p... I really want to get some newer toys in here. One of the students who works for this av guy told me that the mic preamps were worn out. I almost couldn't keep a straight face. The input gain controls are fine. He said they had to turn the controls all the way up to get enough gain out of the wireless mic's. Perhaps they could have also adjusted the output of the receivers, but I wasn't going to tell him that. This is the same guy who said that the silk dome on his tweeters covered the actual diaphragm [*-)] and that tube mic's work by the vibration of an element in the tube. [:#] Whew! Some stuff he does really well, and his mixes are usually fine, but his actual understanding of how this stuff works just baffles me sometimes. Now... if I could just find a Fostex E-16 for the same price and in as good a shape, that would be cool.

Are all the plies oak? A question for dtel. Not all veneered plywood is the same all the way through. The interior plys are often made of other woods.Baltic Birch is all baltic birch, for instance.

Are all those oak? A lot of plywood uses birch or poplar for the inner plies. Bruce

I have some Galaxy Audio 5 inch drivers (used in the Hotspot monitors) and have contemplated using one for a mid driver for my LaScalas. They ae rated 200-18k. What is the eff. of your Audax? Looking good, btw. Bruce

Dee, There was a percieved loss of clarity when the driver/horn was moved toward the front of the cabinet. I thought there might be (probably are) some detrimental effects caused by reflections off the top of the LS cabinet, but the closer time alignment of the K55 with the APT driver ore than make up for it. The up mid to highs are a lot tighter. The larger horn on the tweeter is better, too. With the tweeter at the back of the cabinet, I tried carpet, foam, and other materials to see if I could hear a difference. I couldn't, so I'm back to the good looks of the tops. [Y] Bruce

The LX7 got replaced by an A&H PA series for th eroom where the drama dept. has productions and a Mackie 1604 was replaced with a GL2200 24 input went into our chapel. The chapel gets used for other shows and larger performances. It's an asymetrical cavern that seats about 800 (not sure exactly what the seating is).The Allen & Heath equipment is pretty nice. We still have a 32 input Yamaha in a case somewhere. New hires seem to always want something else, insead of learning how something works. I plugged the LX7 into my system with the LaScalas last night. With all the input gains up, all faders at 0, routers to one of th eoutput groups, sitting on my couch I can't tell it's on. Newer gear should be even quieter. Missing one knob and the pot for the talkback level feels loose.The Spirit SX is just as quiet.
