  1. ... is that he hasn't been around for a while. I'm not expecting him to be like Harry in the Alfred Hitchcock movie, but I haven't seen him lately. Has anyone talked to him or corresponded with him? I'm missing the guy. Bruce
  2. Bummer! Oops, my misspent youth is showing again. For me to get far enough back in my living room, I must have my speakers on the short wall. However, it isn't a wall, but a pass through to the rest of the house, meaning I can't have the MWMs in the normal config, as I would only have a narrow pass through to get into the LR. That's why I'll try them on end (appropriate stands to be made to hold them up, of course... [:|] ) Bruce
  3. My LS, at 22+ years has some of the small checking that lacquer sometimes gets.I am at least the third owner. They still look great from a distance. Glenn, your HT pages are always a treat to visit. Since I only have a 13inch analog tv, I'm not really sliding down that slippery slope, but it does look nice. Bruce
  4. Well, JBL was doing that a long time ago. This is the early version of the Everest, using an asymetrical horn for the midrange. I'm sure other companies have done similar things.Bruce
  5. Says who? You don't have a normal livving room, anyway. The MWMs will do 43 acoustic watts IIRC. You can stand them on end like the Altec 210 cabinets (picture of a modified single shown). Then they would only be 34 inches wide. That's what I plan on doing in my living room, but I will go with a single on each side.
  6. You can put it on CD if you want to. Depending on the format, you can't play it back in a stand-alone CD player, but only through your PC. I've put plenty of 24/96 files on CDs, but only used them for storage or tansport. THey will stream back to the PC with no problem.Bruce
  7. I love this quote: "...I haven't found out how to conduct a satisfactory listening test to correlate listening impressions with measurements."
  8. It looks to me like they are out from the wall by at least a foot, but Michael is sure right about them needing to be away from the wall some. Bruce
  9. I'm not sure what you mean here, Edwin. I don't have anything against SS equipment. Good equipment is good equipment, and there are a lot of beautiful pieces of SS gear out there in the market.Bruce
  10. My Moondogs are quiet. I have some hum, which I could take care of if I wanted to get some DC on the 2A3 heaters, but I'm too lazy. I can't hear it once the music starts.
  11. Jon, PM or email me your address. I'll see it one of the few remaining TV repair places here has a tube tester. We'll at least know it they have a short in them. I ship them to you and you can check them out. They didn't cost me anything. If they work out, enjoy. I have a feeling they are ok, my son pulled them out of some test gear the school was tossing out. Bruce
  12. Let's just says the guitar has gone missing. It looks like a piece of Rosewood. If it's Brazilian, the small piece of wood might be valuable to a luthier. Not $53,012,197.92 valuable, though.
  13. This is freely available on the web, and I couldn't remember if it had been posted before. Enjoy... Afternoon with Paul Klipsch.pdf
  14. Richard, The wood piece looks like a pick guard off of an archtop guitar. You would be correct to say it is for protecting the finish of the guitar. Bruce
  15. I would like to hear a set of these Iwata horns. I have the formulas for them somewhere...
  16. I still have my original woofers in mine and they sound great ('86 LaScalas). I wouldn't just toss the originals... you may find they are just fine. I know you won't regret gettingthe ones from Bob, though. Bruce
  17. I wish I would have had my SET 2A3 amps in the house when I had a pair of Chorus II here for a while. I only had the Chorus temporarily, and tried them on a larger SS amp. They were excellent speakers. People tell me my 2A3 amps shouldn't sound as good as I aleays describe them, but they are wonderful. I will hook them up to my Heresy II speakers soon, just so I know how they work with them. I may hook up my JBL 4311s, too, but they are only 89db. That may be a stretch. Bruce
  18. Reminds me of what an engineer friend of mine, Chad Cox, wrote in th emid '90s: Cox’s Law of Morons A fundamental particle of nature with a very short half-life, except when in proximity to a large number of other morons. Then the wave-nature of the moron is exhibited in a mutual reinforcement which is destructive to surrounding matter. While the half-life of a substantial mass of morons is long, exposure to a highly energetic environment speeds the decay into more fundamental particles, the bum quark and the unemployon. Some of these particles recombine with other particles, some continue to exist in this state for a very long time, while others disappear from the universe completely. The Fundamental Law of Conservation of Incompetence assures us though, that new morons will appear spontaneously elsewhere in the universe.
  19. An LED is a diode (duh!), so connecting to DC must be done the correct way. They have about a 1.2 volt drop across them. You need a resistor in series with them, as a current limiting device. You can put one on the 6.3 volt AC if you want, and put about a 300 ohm resistor in along with it. It will only be on half the time, since it is a diode. That also means it won't be as bright. Without the resistor, it won't come on. If you could keep upping the voltage, it would finally come on, but only long enough to explode. Don't ask how I know this...[*-)] The caveat is that you may get noise in the amp from it constantly turning on and off. I put one on as a pilot lamp and couldn't hear any noise. They are really cheap, so it's easy to try. You don't need a high wattage resistor, either. Bruce
  20. Asking about crossovers is a loaded question! [] Some just want to get new caps to bring their old crossovers up to spec, while others go all out with newer designs. The AA is a good crossover, as is the A, but some prefer to go with one of Al Klappenberger's extreme slope designs. They are expensive, though, and I won't get into the merits or faults of either. The volume at which you listen can play an important part in what you might want to get. Some think the extreme slope crossovers need to have the juice put to them before they sound their best. I built my own, which are closer to the A, but a constant impedance type. These have worked well on my LS powered by low power SET amps. Bob will be able to advise. The cast frame woofer will likely not fit in the LS, as it has a slightly larger frame than the stamped frame model. They are both good woofers. And welcome! Bruce
  21. I love the work you guys are doing. I mentioned this in another thread, but will do so again. The cabinet maker/carpenter at the college where I work, often uses either t-nuts or hurricane nuts on projects. Often, they are inaccessible once everything is together. To keep them seated, he will glue or glue and screw a small block of wood over the nut to provide additional insurance that it won't come out. It needs a hole in it, too. You could use a small scrap of 1/2 inch ply. I think the pic may explain more than my words. It keeps goofy guys like me from coming along and pushing out the nut. [:$]
  22. The VIVA Solista uses 845s or 211s as rectifiers... I would guess you could also use 300B tubes as well.
  23. Thanks, Craig. It thought that was the case but wasn't sure. I have two... I don't have a tester, but would be happy to send them to try.
  24. The Klipsch K-69 as the P.Audio BMD750 2" driver is $189 each. I want to try these on a set of GotHover's 2" tractrix horns. (but I can't get them right now.. ) Bruce
  25. That's probably the Cornwalls... []Not knowing the design of your amp,you might be able to replace just two of the 12AT7s, and get a lot differernt sound. I've found the EH tubes to be a pretty good bang for the buck tube. I have a couple of GE 6201 tubes, that might be able to be swapped for 12AT7s. I don't have a use for them and could send them to you to try if you would like. The 6201s are listed as a substitute, but the ratings are a little different. It would be your call, or perhaps VTL could tell you if they would work. EDIT: I just looked on their website, and noticed that it uses two 12AU7s and two 12AT7s. The 12AU7s are lower gain, and I have a bunch of those (GE and RCA), but I am starting a Dynaco mod that uses the 12AU7s so I want to hang on to most of those until I can check them out. Bruce
