  1. Norm, The LSII is made from 1" MDF for the outer cabinet, with nice veneer covering it all. There would not be much to gain by trying to put another 1/4" on the doghouse, as it is rigid enough. Plus, it would cut down on the size of the horn. It would be pretty hard to put a 1/4" skin over the rest of the cabinet, too. What might be the simplest method, would be to add cross braces in the mouth of the horn, as shown in the LS bass cabinet. This would stop the sides resonance. Bruce
  2. I think Dave just invited you to my house...[*-)] I'm just south of the Chickamauga Battlefield. Isn't Dallas on the northwest side of Atlanta? I have LaScalas, normally powered my my 3.5watt SET amps. I'm not fancy with it all, I hook it up and I like it or I don't. I also have a redone Dynaco ST-70, at 35 watts per, that I could hook up. Or some SS... If you stop by I can loan you some Lawrence Welk I inherited... No, you can HAVE the Lawrence Welk! [] I don't have any Marie Osmond, sorry... Bruce
  3. I didn't do this with SketchUp, but I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. I accidentally left a piece off, and need to add it. [] I haven't tackled the drivers yet... they will be a bit more difficult.
  4. Having worked with kids choirs in church settings, it is really hard. THeir voices aren't strong, they can't project and it makes it hard to get much through a P.A. of any kind. And... yes, Bose sometimes deserves a break. They do make some P.A. gear that can work ok.
  5. So the throat is 2" x 2", is that correct? That would mean the top and bottom start at the 2" (1" from center) and go to 12" (6" from center) vertically. Very cool! Can't wait to hear what JC thinks ofit when he gets some testing and listening done. Bruce
  6. Hmmm, really helps to build a good relationship. Is that why she is an ex? If there are five seats, then you can always have the center one and be in the sweet spot. Or you can just have three seats...
  7. Haven't tried them yet... nice old tubes... they're sitting on my desk in front of me. If I can't get to it, I'll just get with you and pass them on to someone else.
  8. You may just be cranking the wookfer a lot more than most users would. I bought my 4311s new from a studio close to where I lived, and they borrowed them from me one weekend, while recording a Styx album. The studio had some huge EV monitors that the band wasn't familiar with, and wanted to use my JBLs as a reference. The control room wasn't huge, but I don't believe they had them up too loud. Bruce
  9. Bill, When I got my BBX from JC, that tube was very microphonic and noisy. I tried some Philips 6922s I had here and they each were noisy, static prone and so on. On one of the threads, Mark said the BBX was sensitive for that tube and suggested trying one of the EH6922 tubes. I got a plain one ($12.95) and not the Gold Pin version. No more static and only a very slight hiss on my LS. I can't hear it three feet away. The Gold Pin EH6922 costs under $20. You might give it a try and see what you think. I can't afford to try NOS tube rolling. Bruce
  10. Sure would be a prime candidate for a Darwin Award. I've tried to look up the story again, to check out some of the details, but can't find them.
  11. During the Police/Firemen strike in Memphis in the late '70s, everyone was on edge. There was a huge power outage, and everyone rushed to this substation, only to find a very toasted squirrel had shut down a huge portion of the city. As a news photographer, I made sure I filmed all the gory details. Of course, that had a bit happier ending than what happened here in Chattanooga this past summer. A huge foundry had closed, with much of the facility torn down and hauled awa. Someone decided to steal some of the copper in the power lines on the property, except they were still live. Alas, the man after the copper was not alive when the police got on the scene. Bruce
  12. Should I consider my self properly spanked? Of course they aren't, but one may find them to be a better value.. The LSII would be awesome! I think I will pull out my ADAT and try a mix on the LS I have, and then burn a cd and try in some different systems. (ADAT has very low hours and is for sale, btw) A pair of Heresy IIIs might fit the bill quite nicely. They sound great, are well balanced and could more easily be placed in a smaller control room. Still sound wonderful when back away from them. Bruce
  13. I was looking at some Jensens... you get what you pay for, you know. Bruce
  14. Mike, at about $70 a pop for a transformer, I can breadboard the section of the Rolls and try it. I can etch it if it does the trick. Mark, the Cleanbox doesn't interest me as much since they give you no specs at all. Sheeeesh... at least it is a place to start. Bruce
  15. You can still get little splicing kits for vhs and beta (all the 1/2 inch tapes). They usually have a mylar or polyester tape, that will remain flexible. If you do a search, you can find them on ebay for about $25. That would be the safer way to do it. Or find someone who does videos in your area and see what it would cost to have them splice/repair. It would take long to do. I still have my 1/4 " splicing block from my RTR days. Bruce
  16. I believe groomlakearea51 has used Seleniums with good results. I don't remember the model offhand.
  17. The Tangent 400 has the same guts as a Heresy II, including an HII marked crossover. The bass is better on the Tangent. THe answer really is that it depends on which model. A friend of mine has a pair of the 400s and they rock. Bruce
  18. Thanks Richard... I have LS, so I don't need it that low anyway, right? [] I have all the docs to perform the cap swap in one of those, in case I end up buying one, but I am a little annoyed that they don't list many specs on the unit. I need it mostly for an impedance match... and the Rolls section I need should work great if I can get it built. They list all the values on their schematic, so I'll have a go at it. We'll see how quiet it turns out to be. My SS does have balanced inputs, to the match up should work out. I'll keep you informed. Bruce
  19. Sometime it's a good thing to follow the "heard." [:^)]
  20. Mike, they don't give the impedance for the line inputs on the Behringer. If it's 10k, it wouldn't help me. The Rolls has 100k, which would work. Richard, I found the schematic for the Rolls... I only need two ICs and a few other parts. I might have most the right parts to wire it up. Let me try that first. I know that ART doesn't list the impedance on their line ins either. Did the Cleanbox work ok? I need the high input impedance, or the bass really rolls off when I plug the Merlin into the SS with a low Z input.. Bruce
  21. Yeah, but what about John and Ringo?
  22. Harry, thanks for getting these posted. Still praying for the friends and family.
  23. Does anyone on here have an unused ART Matchbox or Rolls MB12b Promatch they aren't using at the moment and are willing to loan me for a couple of weeks? I want to try my SS power amp with the Merlin again, but the SS amp has too low an input impedance to work correctly. ART doesn't give enough tech specs on their website, but the Rolls looks like it would be ok. (rca has 100k input z, and my SS amp has balanced inputs which would match up great) I was thinking someone on here had tried one.... Either that or the schematic for a tube linestage with a low enough output z for me to build. I have some 12ax7 and vintage 6dj8s, 12au7s... Should only take a couple of tubes, but I can't scrounge up a schematic. Bruce
