  1. Does anyone on here have an unused ART Matchbox or Rolls MB12b Promatch they aren't using at the moment and are willing to loan me for a couple of weeks? I want to try my SS power amp with the Merlin again, but the SS amp has too low an input impedance to work correctly. ART doesn't give enough tech specs on their website, but the Rolls looks like it would be ok. (rca has 100k input z, and my SS amp has balanced inputs which would match up great) I was thinking someone on here had tried one.... Either that or the schematic for a tube linestage with a low enough output z for me to build. I have some 12ax7 and vintage 6dj8s, 12au7s... Should only take a couple of tubes, but I can't scrounge up a schematic. Bruce
  2. They look GREAT! Nice score, even if you had to make the long drive.Even adding in the gas, you came out great. Enjoy them a while and then get the caps replaced. You will probably think you got another set of speakers after the change. Bruce
  3. Mike They look really, really nice. I am amazed at how nice the grain is on the fronts, since they were decorators.Congrats on getting them finished.VERY nice WAF now. If someone had real beaters, I suppose you could put punched tin and trim on the front and tell folks they were matching pie safes. Yours look so nice, the wife will probably be showing them off to visitors. Bruce t
  4. My LaScalas have DHA2 crossovers (1st order), and I usually listen at a level under 90db. That would be about the max, or a little above. Works great with my 3.5 watt amps. I could see using ESNs if Iwas going to be cranking it, but I would be using a different amp at that point.Bruce
  5. You are the second person who has talked about th JBL123 woofers. They should work well, but they don't really need a very large cabinet. You would definitely get lower bass out of them, with sn Fs of 25Hz. Bruce
  6. Yes, you can get all the drivers brand new, but not necessarily form Klipsch. You can get the K-33 woofer from Klipsch, or an equiv. replacement from Bob Crites. He also has a cast frame version. The K-55 mid you can get new or used, and the diaphragms are readily available. THe K-77 tweeter diaphragms are available, but a replacement tweeter from Bob really does a nicer job. It it his CT125, an Eminence driver on a horn that is a drop in replacement for the Klipsch. Much smoother and better high end, although YMMV Bob is on here, or can be reached at http://www.bandksound.com/ He has crossover upgrades and replacements, too. What JBLs do you have? Bruce
  7. Other than not having enough practice, I don't think the guys on here are the ones you need to worry about.
  8. CD, not a problem, but I'll have to get my digital camera back from my son. They are pretty straight forward, with velcro on the backs to hold them in place.Bruce
  9. Same here, Dave. We will all soon be passing the torch to those younger that us. We won't need those torches any more, as we will be seeing clearly and not through a glass dimly. OB is there now, I'm sure of it. Let them in Let them in, Peter They are very tired Give them couches where the angels sleep And light those fires Let them wake whole again To brand new dawns Fired by the sun not wartime's Bloody guns May their peace be deep Remember where the broken bodies lie God knows how young they were To have to die God knows how young they were To have to die So give them things they like Let them make some noise Give dance hall bands not golden harps To these our boys And let them love, Peter For they've had no time They should have trees and bird songs And hills to climb The taste of summer in a ripened pear And girls sweet as meadow wind With flowing hair And tell them how they are missed But say not to fear It's gonna be alright With us down here Let them in, Peter Let them in, Peter Let them in, Peter
  10. Well, Tom, some of us are still around. Not a lot of WAF in those, but you must like the sound. What JBLs are those 15s? Bruce
  11. That is still done with some groups today, and one of the reasons ticket prices are high. There are a lot more reasons that go with that...
  12. Nope, I will disagree. I currently have a '91 812C, which is about the smallest guitar they make (other that the Baby series). Sounds very full and balanced. I owned a Maple Jumbo 615, that was explosive and not at all thin. Both of them have allowed me to more easily sound they way I hear guitars on LP and CD.I have previously owned a '68 D-28 and a '51 D-18. Don't get me wrong, those guitars are awesome (still within the family). My older son has a Taylor 310, Sapele Dreadnought (I think that's the model) Inexpensive and very nice balanced tone. Of course, I think the LS have plenty of bass, too! [] ...and, that's why there are so many brands out there. None of these are valid reasons for buying any particular brand. There are plenty of other world class guitars out there that you could say this about. And you buy a guitar for the sound and style you play, not because one kind of wood is perceived to be better than another. I have a '74 Guild, that has perfect intonation and excellent tone, The playability/action is second to none for an acoustic. I don't ever have to make excuses for it. Haven't had to make excuses for any of my instruments. People either like them or they don't, and it doesn't really matter since they are mine.
  13. Mike, Welcome to the forum. That's a pretty bum deal on getting the decorators when you thought they were the B model. Yes, please continue the pics as time permits. Greg's got the goods, for sure, when it comes toreworking the cabinets. Just remember he has been doing it for a long time and has a really good shop. And don't be afraid to jump in on the threads here. Bruce
  14. I've done my own share of stupid things. While working in tv news in Memphis in the mid /70s, I did some recording for a friend on my 4 track RTR. We took it and a small mixer I had into the station to mix down to the 2 track Ampex they had. Everything was patched in... no signal to the 2 track. Checked... double checked... Call engineer friend from the station... We couldn't figure it out. Duh! Ended up the mixer wasnt' turned on. They had recessed lights in the mix booth, and one was shining right down onto the little aluminum bezel surrounding the power l.e.d. It was glowing great! But it wasn't on. The mix came out ok, btw. Still, some folks haven't a clue. At least I finally figured it out.[:$] Bruce
  15. Gilbert, Great choice! A friend of mine who owns a jazz club in SanDiego still has his D-35 that he got back on the '60s. They weren't making the HD-35s at that point. The important thing is that YOU like it. Just relax and enjoy it. You will probably hit plateaus. Just don't ever give up. Remember, as in our audio systems, it's all about the music. Bruce
  16. I loved my cats, but that is just too funny. Did you every see the Outpost.com commercial where the shoot hamsters through the 'O' in the Outpost sign. Cracked me up.
  17. Sure, why not? Something like the single ended 6BQ5 (I think that's right), used in those Roberts R-T-R recorders. Probably get away with only one or two input tubes. Hmmmmm...
  18. Sorry, they are NFS... Although they are nice and have the original lacquer, they do have all the little surface cracks in the finish. I just can't get up the courage to refinish them. It is a lot of surface area. If was going to redo them, I would remove the front trim and put trim around the whole front, though. Why would you want them since you have your MWMs? I'm still planning on building mine, but the price on the wood will have to come down some (and be down when I have the money). Bruce
  19. If I were buying from a dealer, I would be more inclined to buy from McintoshAudio, at http://www.mcintoshaudio.com , since Terry DeWick does repair/refurbishing there also. He does superb work. The plus is I could easily drive up there and back in a day to deliver or pick something up. Bruce
  20. Dave, you got any DBX encoded vinyl? You think the input selector is set wrong so you turn up the gain and get blown out of the room. Dolby SR was better for studios, but the 2:1-1:2 scheme had it all over Dolby B for home use. Bruce
  21. Marvel- as in Capt. Marvel. A bunch of us right out of high school used comic book characters for names. That was in the late '60s. The other two were The Shadow and The Phantom. Always shortened to the main name. Shadow will be down my way to visit right after Christmas.Sometimes we don't hear from each other for months, but always pick up right where we left off.
  22. The 2213H is positive on the black. That needs to match the polarity of the K-24. It will make a difference. Bob C. can probably tell you the polarity of the K-24. JBL was an oddball with their wiring. Most drivers are/were made with the positive on the red. Something is certainly wrong. My 4311s sound pretty close to my HIIs... JBLs = more bass, lower sensitivity. The overall sound in MY livingroom (13 x21) sounds really good. The Heresy IIs and LS just sound better.
  23. I think that is the way JBL ran them on the L100s and 4311X series. I have often thought of changing my 4311 crossovers (they at least need the caps replaced... they're from '72).I haven't fired them up for a while, but never had them hooked up to anything over 35wpc, so I was never driving them very hard. Mike, can you explain what the Hall Effect would do in a speaker system. Bruce
  24. From a distance they look ok... Cheap circular saw and lack of patience shows. Here's a shot of the front of one, showing the golden virola plies. I think they have a little more WAF now, since they aren't sitting on the cardboard boxes they came in.
