  1. The zener might introduce some noise into the system. A voltage divider made with resistors would work, but you will dissipate some heat trhough the resistors. The is what a cheap (or not so cheap) volume control does. If it is a DC fan, you can usually slow them way down using a PWM supply. This is what model trains use. The full 24 volts would be applied to the fan, but in pulses. For it to recieve the equiv. of 12 volts, it is only on 50% of the time. This could also introduce noise. Computer power supplies operate this way, but for set voltages.
  2. They have some nice little kits if you like solid state and op amps. They have an A/C power supply you can get for the phono pre, which provides ±15VDC. Be nice in a small box. Maybe a chocolate box.
  3. Passives with high end parts could run over $1000 for the pair (Rigma spent about $1200). They could be built for less.
  4. ART pro audio has a similar device, but they don't list the complete specs on their site. The ART product has a few other features, like optical I/O from the usb bus. The version 2 can be had for around $100 or less. http://www.zzounds.com/item--ARTUSBPHONOPLUSV2 They also make the CLEANBOX that some of the guys on here are using.
  5. Now you will probably have new diaphragms in the mids and tweets as well. An almost complete upgrade. They should sound better than new, really, once everything is back in place. I really hate it when something simple ends up becoming complex and costing more than it should have. When dealing with Bob, though, all anyone here can say is he is wonderful to work with. Bruce
  6. For some reason I don't believe that second line. [] Barbara and I had a good 30 plus years with no fights. It has given me pause to consider a new relationship...
  7. Hmmmm... just seemed to be their preference, to me. I use both... Medium to high powered SS and low to medium tube gear. Whatever makes music.
  8. mfk had to do some routing on his to get the mid driver to fit through the opening. They were making some adjustments to the wiring harness *** well, so all would be ok. No feedback on whether you could remove the driver from the horn and remount it through the woofer opening. Mark said his hands are to big to try...
  9. That looks really nice! It has a closed back... Sure would like ot see the whole layout of the cabinet, to see the exact geometry. Notice the diagram by Paul Klipsch on the attached drawing... the sound goes out the back to utilize the corners at a continuation of the horn geometry. This is from a set of drawings made in 1945. That ad from the magazine is uncanny. The cats are almost perfect copies of the two I used to have. Bruce
  10. Neo, I don't know how handy your are with tools, but you could make a false corner to go with one of the Klipschorns in the larger room. A lot of folks on here have done that,,, Dean being one of them. A fairly inexpensive way to overcome the 'no corners' syndrome. Some have gone ahead and made false corners for both of the Khorns, so they can aim them better and have a lot more latitude in placement.
  11. The older HK receivers sound very tube-like to me. I can't believe the bas out of my HIIs, and I have them up on 30" stands. THere should be plenty of SS gear that you can get, that will be totally satisfying to you. It would be best to find someone with the gear and go have a listen, or be able to try it out in your own home. first...
  12. Thanks for the link, Dean. VERY interesting article. Also very sad, since there isn't much we can do about it.
  13. The 1980 Cherry Lacquer Cornwalls at $813.00 would be about $2293 in 2007. Might show a bit higher now with he economy the way it is, but no conversions are available online yet.
  14. My grandparents lived in Villa Grove, uncle in Charleston. We lived in Homer, where my dad taught Civics, Driver's Ed, and was the ONLY coach. Had some relatives in Champaign, but most have passed away and I've lost touch with the others. Moved away from Homer to Peoria about '59, where I finished school. Made a trip to Monticello last year, to deliver a set of Klipsch Chorus II speakers to a guy who has a collection. Stopped back through Homer and took a pic of the old house, still standing, built in the 1850s. What a trip... It's all a great area, even if it is flat.
  15. I should have put periods in there...Mother Earth News (MEN)![*-)] After I hit my 20s, I did far too many hallucinogens and smoked too much. I gave it all up about 30 years ago. Life is far better when you're straight, and only gets better and better. When you put all your trust in Him, you really can't go wrong.
  16. I'm not familiar with that Sony, but a lot of the folks on here don't like the Sony or Yamaha gear. My older son has a Yamaha on his Heresies, and I think it's quite ok.
  17. Those look to be in nice shape, but I don't know what they would sell for. Someone on here may come along and give you an honest idea. You could do a search on ebay and see what they have been selling for. Good luck. Are you moving? I grew up about twenty miles southeast of Champaign-Urbana...
  18. I've never actually read one of those. I take it it's not about mountain climbing. My dad had a subscription to MEN after I moved away from home. I'm afraid I read too many tech magazines nowadays.
  19. Ya'll probably stopped reading Mother Earth News, too...[:#]
  20. John, I promise I'll get your crossovers back to you... You working this week? Bruce
  21. Welcome to the forum...and don't be timid. Could be a wide price range, do you have a ballpark amount you would want to spend? I am using an old HK430 SS receiver on my Heresy IIs. They can rock pretty well. Should be able to find one for < $100. Only 25wpc, but it's a decent receiver. You could try one to get your feet wet. I'm not too up on newer SS equipment. What are you using now? How large is your living room? What kind of furnishings are in it (carpet and rugs, heavy drapes will soak up the high end, etc.)? Bruce
  22. Historical prices on what part? The horns, the Khorns complete? The K401 composite horn is about $50 each. I don't know about the Khorn or LS, specifically.Bruce
  23. Here's a link to the page for the Quartet (with photo): http://www.klipsch.com/products/discontinued/details/quartet.aspx No model number, as they only made one version of the Quartet. To insert a photo, when you hit reply, above where you put in your text is an <options> tab. It opens a box to add/update, where you can browse to your picture (only one per post unless it's hosted on a photo sharing site). Choose your photo, and save it. You may need to scroll to the right to see the save button. Then post your reply. Bruce
  24. Actually, the 400 is the metal one... the composite is the 401.
