  1. I have two schematics that were called E2, although the schematics themselves both just say Type E on them. One has some mods drawn in red ink, so the designation is TYPE E EXPR. I might assume (gets me in trouble) that the expr is for experimental. May be for the 16 ohm resistor across the woofer and auotoformer wiring differences. Plus, a third one (newer) that I am posting again. Bruce
  2. Most materials will vibrate, it just depends on what frequency a given 'stuff' will do so and whether or not it is detrimental to the sound. Dana-- you could use the same horns you have and make a mold for the back and cast concrete around your original. Like some of those guys putting concrete in their A7 cabinets. If you think it's a problem, just laminate some other material on the horns you have. SOmething with a different density. You could still make it 'purty'.
  3. As was often the case, Sam Clemens was quoting scripture: Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.
  4. It's an A4. [] And I knew that too! Since it is a four string, it is an A4. Duh!!! [:$]
  5. While I think there are still some great Fenders out there, unless you really WANT the name, there are lots of great instruments by other makers. And you shouldn't have to mortgage your house to get one either. Duke, The little Portaflex was nice. I didn't really appreciate it enough at the time my friend had it. Hope he still does, but that was 25 years ago. It only had a twelve in it. We were mostly playing in some smaller bars and it was simply awesome. Not the bars, they were pretty bad. [] Let's see -- one electric, my lap steel, drums and bass. We sure had lots of fun, even if we didn't make any money at it. Memphis has probably changed a bit since then. Bruce
  6. People are forgetting the hard work that Jim E. did getting these drawings done. Open the pdf attachment and save to your hard drive. It is more detailed that the earlier posts.
  7. The grill should be held on with Velcro and comes off easily. The drivers come out the front, and remove pretty easily as well. The corssover is mounted on the speaker terminal cup on the back, and you would be able to see it if you pulled the woofer out. If you pull any wires off the individual drivers, label with tape so you know where they go. Bruce
  8. LOL! No kidding! Having grown up in Peoria, it is surreal enough without smoking something funny and even more so when you do. [H] Bruce
  9. I rented a power amp from a local shop once here in Chattanooga. When I went to pick it up all they had left was a Peavey (can't remember the model). I almost couldn't lift the thing and it almost broke the rear shocks on my car. [] Heaviest amp I have ever had to deal with. It also worked fine. Never even got warm. Bruce
  10. One of the nicest sounds from a bass I ever heard was a friend who had an original Hofner bass. He pulled the frets out and played it through one of the smaller Ampeg Portaflex amps. Sweeeeet! The Ibanez basses are really good. Duke is right, the made in Japan Fenders are okay.
  11. If I remember correctly, Dale Walker, one of our Canadian friends, did his LaScalas in black. He does autobody/painting for a living. They looked great. He hasn't posted in FOREVER. Miss seeing his posts. He is probably working too hard or just enjoying the music instead of haning around here. Bruce
  12. It's funny how certain brands command higher prices than others, and not always because they are better. Martin guitars have long been considered "THE" acoustic flatop, and deservedly so. Still, different years, different woods, etc., are all a part of what makes that Martin sound. ALL companies have made lemons, some just have more of them. Some just don't sound as good as others. My 1951 Martin listed for $125. I paid $350 in the late '60s. It would now fetch over $2k pretty easily (it isn't for sale anyway). The Epiphone probably listed for $100 or less. In pristine shape, it would surely bring far more. The Kalamazoo would have cost even less when new. But then a dollar was worth more. I love old instruments. Kinda like old speakers [] . Of old guitar companies in teh U.S., many are forgotten, or if folks find one in the closet of a relative, they would dismiss it because they have never heard of them. Kay, Harmony, Regal and others, have been reborn in China, Korea and Japan, as cheap imports. Some are even pretty good. A good friend of mine has a Regal that was made in the '30s or '40s maybe. A tiny guitar with a huge sound. Beautiful spruce top and Rosewood back and sides. He paid $35 for it. I would pair it even with Martins of the same era and model. Bruce Bruce
  13. My son started with a Yamaha he saved his money for. It served him well. He now has a Fender Precision that he bought used. Looks like ... sounds great. Here's a new Precision from Elderly: http://www.elderly.com/fmic/items/F50SPB.htm The better models are around $1300 new. The tone changes with age as well. He also has a Godin A5 fretless with piezos in it that is just awesome. There are a lot of good basses out there. Low cost doesn't mean it's bad. Where's all the bass players on here? I know there are some. Bruce
  14. Many would put the tweeter up at ear level, but you will lose more of the bass. If you are using a sub it won't matter. I have mine up on some Rubbermaid step stools (see pic), which are about 9 inches high. Not very classy, but they are in our bedroom right now. They are also not resonant, so they don't seem to add any odd freq. harmonic content. btw, the Heresys will rock your socks at louder volumes. You might even notice that it 'seems' to help the bass out quite a bit. Bruce
  15. Zebrawood is under $2.00 a ft. The only question is whether or not you want it. Bruce
  16. One would like to get a lot for those, but you probably won't. I would give a call and talk to someone at Elderly Instruments in Michigan (link below). They sell a LOT of used instruments, and price them fairly. You may be able to send them pics so they could more accurately judge the value. They have a couple of Epiphone archtops from the 1940s that they are selling between $1300 and $1900, for example. The Kalamazoo brand doesn't show up as often. I have a '40s lapsteel guitar that was a Gibson second, and made over as a Kalamazoo. I paid little for it and it has always just been a tool for me, so it meant nothing to me to refinish it and upgrade the tuners, etc. Kileed whatever value IT had. For those who don't know, the Kalamazoo brand was antoher line that Gibson owned, along with Epiphone. The older ones were quite good instruments really, as indeed, some of the newer Epis are, even if they are made overseas. The old ones were not. I would love to see pics of the Kalamazoo, and might even be interested when you come up with a price. Acoustics are really my favorites. My 1951 Martin I finally gave to my brother-in-law (and he isn't selling it!). I still have my 74 Guild and my 91 Taylor. Also have an early '20s maybe Vega mandolin banjo. It is mostly a curiosity, as no one wants it ( I could trade it I suppose, on another old oddity) ... but I'm rambling. Very cool! Bruce http://www.elderly.com/
  17. I thank God for a day that Barbara and I could spend with our children, and her sister's family. I thank Him for the grace to love unreservedly. A story never finished. What a beautiful day it was. Bruce
  18. Dennis, Thanks for the link. I figured those drawing would be there, but am showing how lazy I am. I wouldn't say you are rude. Direct perhaps. [] Bruce
  19. Don't abandon hope, Dean. Perhaps a thousand man march of folks with checkbooks in hand would be better than torches and pitchforks. [] And I think you are right about there needing to be success in the whole line, too. Bruce
  20. Erik, Have you had a close look at TigerwoodKhorn's cabinets? His are made similar, I believe, but the left and right corners are angled back from the Khorn front panel a little bit. The look nice that way. As I recall, he said the improvement was still good. Maybe, if he sees this, he could post some other pics of his work. Bruce
  21. I believe I said 'might' sound or work okay. You have nothing to lose by trying them. The JBLs are better built drivers than the klispch, but that doesn't mean they would necessarily be 'okay'. You will just have to try them and see how balanced the sound is from bass to treble. I see I also uploaded the wrong page of the JBL drivers. Try this one. The specs are pretty far off. The xmax is awful compared to the K33. Bruce
  22. Michael, The newer ones don't look quite as 'portable' since the bottoms are one cabinet instead of two that are stacked. At least it looks that way from the picture. Bruce
