I think I was looking at a Fostex 100HT. Not very heavy magent structure that we all seem to like, but it's only $30-$40. That certainly fits MY price range. Marvel

The 2397s I have seen the septas don't come out as far either. Having a basic plan is good, so I will probably follow Widget's plans to try it. Thanks for the input. Marvel

Michael, They all have flaws of some sort. Friends of mine who owned a studio close to me, had booked time for Styx. The studio used some huge EV monitors, the model of which I don't remember, and the band had never heard them or mixed on them. The studio borrowed my JBLs for them to A/B to get used to the EVs. They were a reference for them only in that they knew what their music sounded like on them. Before anyone asks, I don't remember the album name, but it was mid '70s. Marvel Marvel

If you are saying you left the computer up all night with it running on the AC adapter, check to make sure your adapter isn't failing. If you don't ever use the battery, it's probably toast too. For example, my daughter's laptop battery is dead. She only uses it plugged into the wall. Make sure there aren't other little drivers available for the system that you haven't installed, i.e., chipset, etc. They can effect all sorts of performance, stability issues. Marvel

Whatever you use, you have to be familiar with what other music sounds like on your system. You didn't think NS-10s were really a good speaker did you? Tony, I love the JBLs. It's funny you think the mids are forward on the HIIs. I think it is really a difference in bass rolloff and the higher sensitivity in the HIIs that make them seem that way (mostly). I find my HIIs to be pretty smooth. I would still use the JBLs over the HIIs though. Marvel

Tom, The DIY version is interesting, as the vanes come way out almost to the front edges. I got the drawings from Mr. Widget, on the Lansing Heritage forums. Figured a couple of easier ways to make the vanes, and thought I would try them along with the corner horns I am going to get built this summer. Now the wife even knows I'm planning on it so it will be a go now. Thanks for the info. I thought the horn would go low enough. Would it work as a two way or will I still need a tweeter on top? Matt, I have used JBL 4311s for years (someone on here says they are aweful in the midrange, but I respectfully disagree), and I find my HIIs are very close to them in balance, but the bass isn't quite at deep. I don't know that I would use the HIIs to monitor, but have thought of trying some mixes with them to see how they compare to other monitors in the house. The dynamics are great ('cause of the horns). Usually, whatever I have mixed on the JBLs has played back well on most anything else I used for a comparison. Flat? Colored? I think you get used to what you have and mine are easy to listen to for extended periods which is a plus. Marvel

I am aiming this at Maron more than anyone else, but am curious enough to ask who has used the 2397 horns? Which drivers, and what was the lower crossover point? I have figured out some simple jigs for holding wood to cut, and these seem far easier to make than I had at first thought. The only difficult part will be the throat adapter, either to buy ($$$$) or make (more difficult than the rest of the horn). From a WAF standpoint, these are way better than a 511B or 811B anyday. Of course, hiding them behind some grillclothe helps out but these are just cool looking. Marvel

The KP-250 isn't made anymore. They stopped production in 2004.

Depending on the rest of the cabinets, you could just re-veneer the tops.

Al K. posted info quite some time ago, for his "Heresy on Steroids." 20.75" deep x 16.5" wide Bass box was about 27" high. Mid and tweeter moved to box on top, with a different Mid and Tweeter. It was ported. Marvel

Ian, I guess I can say welcome! Many here are quite a conceited lot. Plus, a few others make their living using their ears as well. You are correct that what is described as 'compression' is very likely the amp clipping. I think, amongst all the jocularity exhibited here, you will find some good responses too. That used within their limitations, SET topology amps sound simply beautiful. They would probably work for me, as I have a fairly small room and only listen in the 70 - 90db range. Different amps sound best with certain speakers and settings (rooms, etc). I certainly don't need an 800 watt amp for what I listen too, or to drive any of the speakers I have to levels they were designed for. I even find myself mixing at much lower levels than many say I should, but the playback seems to come out fine. Most of the kidding and slamming is because the majority of the guys here know one another pretty well. Some meet on occasion, to hear one another's systems, etc. Again, welcome. Marvel

Peter, Yes, more than likely, your access door is in the top, which is more of a pain to get into since you just about have to remove everything else to open it up. They even made some that had the doghouse go horizontal, which placed the access door on the left or right side (pretty ugly), but I think that was the first ones that were intended for use as P.A. speakers. My Formerly ST-70 cleaned up nicely with all the mods I did (PS board, driver board, power tranny). Made the bass a lot tighter. I think I'll call it an FD-70 from now on, as in Formerly Dynaco 70 ) Beautiful room. Thanks for the pics. Marvel

Hey Craig -- keep cool, okay? Maybe it's just personal preference, but I've never thought any of the Springsteen recordings were very good. Everything is there, but they just sound ... thin (for want of a better word). I remember one of the early Stones albums (one with Honky Tonk Women I think it was), had a note on the cover to play it loud. The balance was good no matter what level you played it at, although it was great loud. The Springsteen doesn't sound right at any level (to me).
