  1. Hi Dodger I wish your nephew a safe and happy reunion with his family.
  2. I have an Antique Sound Lab AQ1003DT which I thoroughly enjoy. I also recommend looking at the MG SI 15 DT. I had the opportunity to audition the AQ against several more expensive tube and Solid State amps using the same sources and speakers and bought it with no regrets. The MG wasn't available to audition at the time but I have heard it since and very possibly would have gone with it. Bear in mind however that the MG sounds best with high efficiency speakers while the AQ has the cojones needed for more normally efficient speakers. That said there are few if any Klipsch speakers that the MG could not drive to thunderous levels. Both amps can be viewed at http://www.divertech.com The AQ sounded very good indeed right out the box but replacing the ASL branded EL34s ( Sovtek actually ) with Electro Harmonics 6CA7s dramatically improved the sound of an already nice amp;Smoother midrange and tighter deeper bass. The AQ uses JJ ECC82s ( 12AU7 is the N.A. equivalent ) for the preamp section and from what I have read ( and heard )they are about as good as can be had. The ASL line is good value for the money although some of their earlier production had a reputation for questionable build quality. My amp was one of the earlies and had to go in for repair after about 6 months ( An EL34 developed a cathode to plate short ) and accurately reproduced the sound of a .357 going off in a closet via the KLF 30s I then owned. That said Divertech repaired the amp, replaced all O/P tubes and sent me a high quality power cord as an apology. I have experienced no further problems with the amp since so I conclude that the problem had more to do with a faulty tube than with the amplifier itself. I think you could easily spend a lot more and wind up with a lot less.
  3. Oops posted twice.Glad to hear you are enjoying your system.
  4. Well with a pair of Cornwalls and a pair of Heresys you won't suffer waiting to get the horns. That looks to be a very nice setup you run.
  5. s raising the impedance thereby making the speakers more efficient and thus using even less power to drive, and causing a differance in the volume between the pair wired alone and the 2 pair in series 1. No raising the impedance does not effect the efficiency but if you are driving 2 pair of identical speakers then you are effectively doubling the cone surface thereby moving a lot more air. The volume of the sound will therefore be somewhat louder.
  6. Wiring speakers in series is safe as you are effectively adding their impedances together ( Impedance is the AC equivalent of resistance ). In other words series connection of two 8 ohm speakers results in an impedance of 16 ohms.
  7. TEACH! TEACH ! TEACH ! He doesn't have perfect 4 foot corners for each speaker! When I showed a pic with a window intruding into my corner and farking near started a riot on the forum! AKA Congratulations on acquiring the Khorns. I love mine and as time goes on your love for yours will only grow.
  8. I replaced the Sovtek EL34s in my ASL AQ1003DT with Electro Harmonics 6CA7s and noted an across the board improvement. It sounded very nice indeed with the Sovteks but the EHs took the amp into another league.
  9. FWIW I was able to A/B the RF7 against KLF30s with the same amplification and source .....Both are breathtakingly good. I bought the KLFs partly because as a discontinued line they were much less expensive but frankly at the time I could have bought either and I actually liked the 30s better because of their overall bass impact. Lest anyone get excited/defensive the difference was in the Rolls-Royce vs. Bentley tradition...Not having heard Klipsch for a dogs age at that time...One or the other was going home with me that day and had I preferred the 7 over the 30 I would have paid the difference but If for some reason the 30's were unavailable I would have hauled the 7's home with the infamous ****eating grin! I have since sold the 30s and purchased a pair of Khorns and love them but I have to admit that I sometimes miss the slam of the 30s...but rarely as I listen mostly to jazz and very little rock. If you are a rocker RF7s or KLF30s may well be the better choice for you.
  10. Welcome From what I have heard about the Almarro amps you have a good match for Klipsch Heritage speakers. Check out http://www.audiokarma.org also. One of the members ( Brian B. ) is an Almarro dealer.
  11. Well Look on the bright side. Get a solar panel and recharge all of those batteries and you've got enough reserve to disconnect from the power company. Congrats on the Cornwalls. They are great speakers.
  12. I am a former Social Worker/psychotherapist and hold an MSW degree,( The reason for the career switch is a long story ). Now work as a computer/printer technician with NexInnovations in Calgary,Alberta. I spend most of my time doing warranty repairs for Toshiba,IBM,HP,Lexmark etc. I love this forum. When I get home my wife always says," Go unwind with the Yahoos on the forum and hands me a glass of vino!"I made a damned good choice there BTW as we will celebrate our 42nd anniversary on February 23. My mother-in-law ( 93 years old ) called the other night and when I answered she said " You are still there ? " ( Just kidding! )
  13. FWIW My left side Khorn runs with its left grill removed as I have a window sill that protrudes a little into that corner and the grill won't allow the speaker to fit snugly into the corner when in place. I cannot hear any difference between the left and right speaker's bass response.
  14. A possibly heretical comment but...... The Heritage (and especially the Khorn) sound is somewhat different from what many listeners have become accustomed to expect over the last 10-15 years. By that I mean that under normal listening conditions some will think the Khorn's reputation for bass reproduction has been grossly overstated. The trend over the past 25 years or so has been toward high powered Solid State amps driving speakers that emphasise bass ( Think of the younguns BOOM BOOM BOOMING down the street ). That same philosophy has leached into the area of home audio. The current popularity of Home Theatre systems reinforces the notion that a "good speaker" will also rattle the panes out of your windows at the drop of a bass note. The Khorn on the other hand will only go KABOOM if there is an actual KABOOM presented to it from the amp. This results in a bass presentation that is not in keeping with what a lot of people hear as high fidelity. Over time many who have been disappointed with the Khorn sound find themselves appreciating the sonic balance of the Khorn. That said the Khorn sound is different from what many expect on first hearing. The upside is that a very quiet bumpf sounds like a very quiet bumpf and a roaring canon on the 1812 Overture will cause a cat to attempt to dive under the couch or the significant other to run for the basement.
  15. NO! Regardless of how much or how little money is available.
  16. The Jolida amps are very well regarded. Take a look at Antique Sound Lab too. I have their AQ1003DT which is a 30 watt/channel EL34 based amp and am very happy with it. For information about ASL go to: http://www.divertech.com
  17. A HAPPY BIRTHDAY INDEED ! Congratulations on your birthday and your great choice in a wife.
  18. The colour code indicates what the resistance should be. Resistors will generally specify a tolerance. Therefore a resistor with a 100 ohm nominal rating with a tolerance spec of 10% would yield a reading of somewher between 90 and 110 ohms. Any reading that is far outside of that range would indicate that the resistor should be replaced. That said the question that leaps to mind is: Did the amp/etc. fail because of the faulty resistor or did some other problem in the amp overstress the resistor ?
  19. I have an old (1960) LP of Gerry Mulligan and Zoot Sims on tour and I have got to quit playing it so often because at the rate I have been going over the last 6 months I'm going to wear the damned thing out.
  20. If the B&K's work for you then gopherit! I second Clueless' comments too.It is no secret to many on this forum that you and I have had our differences but you have come a long way since those early days and have (rightly) earned the respect of your forum mates ( me included ). PS. Your car is a POS !
  21. Gil Nice explanation as usual. I keep waiting for you to stick your foot in your keyboard but you never do. You are an invaluable asset to the forum....keep up the good work.
  22. I had never heard of Robert Randolph before tonight but I tuned into Austin City Limits on PBS purely on spec and wound up being stunned! Robert is one hell of a guitarist in his own right and the guest steel guitarists that he featured were amazing to watch and hear. Another hole in my collection to fill! If you have not yet discovered this artist do yourself a favour and give him a listen. It is difficult to clearly classify his style as his playing encompasses everything from Rock,Mississipi Blues,New Orleans Jazz and even a little Don Ho although he seems to lean more toward an early rockabilly/southern gospel flavour.
  23. Big hairy deal !! I hear the kid's lousy with a clarinet! AKA he'll remember that shot 'til the day he dies.
