  1. fini "Does this mean that your hearing won't sound as good now?" I hope not!! I already use hearing aids! Amazingly the cataract that was removed was on my left eye. Now two days post surgery the distance vision in that eye is superior to my right eye which tested 20/20 after surgery. The only real problem for me is that my surgeon has warned me not to have sex for three weeks. Although my wife looked damned good before the surgery she now looks even better. So now I have to choose between "knowing" her or seeing her. I'm going to have to get back to you on that one!
  2. I think those are from the mid 1950s based on the style of decoration added by the original owner and the type of midhorn and the tweeter placement.
  3. Wow!! what a difference. Very little discomfort and I'm already seeing better. My surgeon tells me that my vision will continue to improve for another couple of weeks.
  4. Firefox 1.0.2 I use IE 6 for updates etc.
  5. Reading this thread and noticing that most of you "old" folks are anywhere from 10 to 30 years younger than I
  6. Thanks George I got my account set up. Much appreciated. Lynn
  7. Any Lirpa Labs Products anyone remembers
  8. I recently came across an interesting review of these behemouths in an old Audio mag ( June 1971) I picked up at a thrift store. They look interesting. "Lirpa is a little known speaker manufacturer headquartered near Oslo. They have been mainly known as a builder of sound reinforcement speakers for the European and Asian markets but have lately branched out into producing speakers for use in high end home systems. The units we have heard such as their Valkyrie ( priced at a staggering $78,000.00 ) have been competent but somewhat dry sounding to our ears and given their stratospheric prices have not impressed. I recently had the great good fortune to audition the Loof at the factory showroom on the invitation of the company founder Lars Lirpa. Their latest offering is a revelation! The Loof ( a reference to an obscure Nordic warrior king )is not aimed at the average audiophile. They are huge for one thing - standing seven feet tall and sporting a built-in 600 watt amplifier in each speaker. In addition they weigh something in the order of 400 lb. apiece. That combined with their $230,000.00 price rules them out for consideration by all but the wealthiest enthusiast. That said,They are worth every penny! In all my years as a reviewer of audio equipment I can honestly say I have never heard better! Not suprisingly the midrange clarity is astounding as one would expect from any top of the range electrostatic. What I wasn't prepared for was the bass capability of these monsters!Conventional wisdom is that electrostatics just don't cut it below about 200 Hz. A fact tacitly acknowledged by all but the most diehard of manufacturers. It is rare to see a full range electrostatic these days with most makers using a conventional bass reflex cabinet to handle the bottom end. The Loof eschews this approach however utilising a separate newly patented electrophoretic diaphragm which is claimed to be capable of reproducing frequencies as low as 45 Hz ( +/- 1.5 db ). Lirpa claims that the Loof is within 2 db.from 40 Hz. to 29 Khz.No power handling specifications are provided given the Loof's built in power amplification." Unfortunately the rest of the article was missing along with any photos. Has anyone here heard these things?? I have searched high and low but the Audio article is the only reference I have ever seen.
  9. A couple of years ago I called the police about a woman who on two occasions nearly rammed me because she sailed right through a stop sign.On the first occasion I let it slide because I thought she might have been distracted for some reason. On the second occasion I called the gendarmes because as she sailed past me I saw that she had a book sitting on her steering wheel and she was obviously reading it! I have no issues about women drivers per se but I will not tolerate any driver ( male or female), reading a book while driving down the road! Sheesh!
  10. Use a VERY light oil such as sewing machine oil.The lighter the better and don't use more than one or two drops.
  11. I filled up my 2001 Accord yesterday and it cost me C$46.50!
  12. I can't make up my mind which I am more attracted to...The Arts and Crafts style equipment cabinet or your lovely Goldy. Congratulations- Your home, speakers and dog all look very inviting.
  13. Congratulations! I hope you plan to get the turntable up onto a stand or shelf at some point. I'm suprised you aren't having acoustic feedback problems with it being so close to the Lascalas without some sort of isolation. Those are really nice looking speakers!
  14. A tragic event. My sympathies to those who lost family or friends.
  15. There is an amazing variety of high quality barbeques on the market these days. My wife and I opted for a Weber Silver Natural Gas unit. When we decided to put a back porch on our old bungalow I insisted that we build a porch complete with roof and that we get a gas fired barbeque. The roof was a requirement because of aesthetics and comfort. All too often I have seen old houses with a deck rather than a porch and they look like nice old houses with a deck stuck on the back.We are often able to barbeque and/or relax on our porch when it is raining or snowing which would be less comfortable without a roof. Temperatures can get pretty damned low here near Calgary Alberta and propane barbeques just don't cut it when the mercury dips too far.
  16. Silly question perhaps but........Are they in corners and have you taken steps to ensure they are well sealed at the adjoining walls ? What speakers were you using before the Khorns ? The bass character of the Khorn is very dfferent as compared to what many listeners are accustomed to these days. When I first got mine they seemed to lack bass compared to my KLF30s but after,( a very little ),time passed I came to understand that they sounded more realistic than the KLFs and when presented with a truely thunderous bass note they acquited themselves beautifully. I now often find myself listening for the tympani or the sound of a bass player's fingers moving along the strings in preparation for the next note. Yes, I am in love.
  17. WAF fix at my house ! Ch.I ME: Honey,I REALLY want a pair of Klipschorns! Her: How could they sound better than what we have ? ( We had a pair of lovely KLF30s in mahogany that I had scored using the same line ) Ch. II My buddy and I stagger in the door with the first bass bin trot back out and stagger in with the second, trot back out and stagger in with the tops and place them on the bins. She does a wary walk around these monsters that are occupying about 70% of the unoccupied space in or living room. She turns to me and says "Oh My Gawd those things are huge!" Ch. III Brian and I wrestle them into their corners and I hook them up to my amp. I fire up her favourite piece of music,( Democracy - Leonard Cohen ) at moderate volume. Wife: Oh My GAWD!! I've never heard anything like that! The whole room is the speaker now! Ch. IV As a joke I told her a year later that I had heard some new speakers that are even better than the Khorns and I can get them for only about $300.00 after trading in my horns. She fell for the gag and said, " No F'ing way! You are not going to sell my speakers!"
  18. You are likely getting those ticks from the CDs themselves. That is particularly common when playing burned copies of music.
  19. Weatherstripping putty may not be a good choice. I tried using it and found that it tended to sag and fall away from the horn. I switched to the butyl rubber and did not have that problem and more than a year later the butyl rubber tape is still adhering well without sagging.
  20. "EASY Score: 97% Avg. Error 3 miles Time: 290 seconds" Big Deal !! Can YOU play the Clarinet??
  21. "Do not expect too much info on Pauls first wife, Belle" You've got that right! Maybe 2 sentences! A real disservice in my opinion. Without her support in the early years Klipsch and Associates would barely be a footnote in the history of audio. If you listen to a Klipsch Heritage speaker today remember that without her paycheque in those early years Paul would have been unable to keep his company afloat long enough for the Klipschorn to establish a name. In addition the book provides very little detail on the man and his history. I see it as a well intentioned attempt by a pair of loyal Klipsch afficianados but one which would never have seen the light of day if subject to editorial scrutiny. I have but cannot recommend this book.
  22. One caveat I used the Butyl Rubber Tape I found at a local RV dealer and paid about C$20.00 for a 25 foot roll. I later found the same product at a hardware store in a blister pack labelled as Plumber's Tape at C$4.95 for a 6" strip. Therefore as Butyl Rubber Tape it cost 1.25/ft and as Plumber's Tape it sold at C$ 9.90/ft!!
