  1. The brochure for the 70" Samsung that I'm interested in has this to say: "Bring the movie theater into your living room. Our HDR Premium technology displays HDR (High Dynamic Range) content from new generation Ultra HD Blu-ray, HDR streaming content, and HDR content available on Vidity compliant storage devices. Meets CTA HDR-compatible requirements.1" 1Complies with CTA (Consumer Technology Association) definition requirement for HDR open standard profile playback.
  2. Thanks, it is unique. Yeah, the hidden center channel is a project... The good thing is that when I play my "fireplace" Blu-Ray, the crackling snapping fire sounds will be accurately originating from where they are supposed to. The khorns are difficult to dispense with, they are cool speakers that I've grown very fond of, so they do surround duty until I move to a different house and set up a system in a separate room. They are overkill most of the time but really excel with some recordings, like the Blu-ray audio disc format where the listener is in the middle of the orchestra. Such as; Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band - Swingin' For the Fences. Which by the way is selling for $7.99 on Amazon, what a deal! If you don't have a copy, buy it, it's cool! Tim&jjptkd, That's very encouraging, I was thinking the same thing but it's good to hear that y'all are satisfied.
  3. I really don't know enough about it to understand the definition of dynamic range or black levels are. I do know that the old sony still looked good to me, but I was raised with black and white televisions so I'm generally in awe at the picture quality of any of the modern sets. I will look into it and clear up the nomenclature. That's good to know that Samsung "makes the best quality". The Sony was and from what you are saying is a very nice set. I'm into "significantly better" if it's under $2K. I agree, the tape is a good beginning to putting it there. So, if the 70" is the new 55", then I'm good? Heh? The speaker placement isn't so bad. The jub's will be set out of the corners about two feet to allow the placement of subs behind them and to prevent too much from bouncing off the bricks. Now, the center channel is an issue... My temporary solution is to place one Belle on the hearth, and that also answers your question about using the fireplace. The long term center channel solution is to create a multi-point center out of a K-402, Danley style. I already have a set of 402's slated for the project. The 402 will just fit with a custom cabinet. Then I'll get a chain mall screen to cover it up and "magic" the center channel dialogue will appear to come from nowhere. The khorn surrounds aren't going to change, I just have to put one in different corner when I rotate the room 90 degrees to face the fireplace. What is HDR and how does it relate to this UHD Samsung that I'm interested in purchasing. I can see that more study is needed on my part... I appreciate all of your replies and assistance. Thank you.
  4. I'm seriously considering replacing my 5 year old Sony 55" KDL-55EX621 LED TV with a Samsung 70" Class (69.5" Diag.) 4K Ultra HD LED LCD TV UN70KU630DFXZA. Costco has this model in my price range. I'd appreciate any opinions (pro or con) that you have on Samsung televisions and UHD in general. The plan is to mount the TV on the fireplace approximately where the tape is in the photo.
  5. Watchmen - 2009 Blu-ray disc - This movie surprised me. I was expecting something else all together. Very good overall, it has great audio, a decent story and not too much crazy violence. I was expecting the whole movie to be all kung-Fu fighting and blood.

They are still for sale... Don't miss your chance.
  9. Not a lot of patience needed if you use the correct materials to prepare the surface. The key is to use high quality materials like Evercoat polyester primer and an epoxy sealer engineered for use by boaters to fix wood rot . These KP-250's were abused (probably left out in the rain more than once) and the plywood was delaminating along the edges. An application of penetrating epoxy handled the problem. It's a 2 part system that's thinned with acetone so it soaks into the plywood making it waterproof. A couple of coats of primer applied over the sealed plywood and some block sanding is all it takes to prep for the color coat. Sand able polyester primer is neat stuff.

  11. I was getting quotes from Cinema dealers on the cost of a new set of Jubilees and one of them said he needed to hold off because the Klipsch factory is revising the cost of the Jubilee because they have made some major internal changes this month? No other information was given. I thought it was odd to not give me a quote, since when do salesmen not sell? Then I found the updated web site. http://www.klipsch.com/pro/cinema/behind-the-screen http://e994010f48279d85b5d7-a0bc3fbf1884fc0965506ae2b946e1cd.r57.cf2.rackcdn.com/product-specsheets/KPT-Cinema-Grandeur-Data-Sheet-v01.pdf This is interesting; "The new KPT-1515 low frequency enclosure has been redesigned and affords the same frequency response as the KPT-MWM-LF, but is almost 1/3 shallower – making the Cinema Grandeur much more versatile in installations where space is limited.

Yep, the MWM's take up a lot of space. The room is 22.5' x 21.5" and everything just fits. I also really love the quality sound at high and low volumes.

Babadono, I didn't tell anyone, James. Your secret is safe with me... As far as I'm concerned you were just wonderful guest that appreciates quality sound. I don't care how famous you are, you are always welcome back.
  16. Thanks. I haven't painted the original metal grills. Not yet anyway, I've been considering the idea of straightening them, priming and re-surfacing with the same paint. I cut out a new set of grills from 1/2 plywood and covered them with original Heritage fabric. These speakers were is rough shape with some water damage and all together abused.

I guess I didn't get charged? It really doesn't make any sense that you got such a raw deal and I didn't. I must be living right... But, I've had my share of bad luck with a couple of audio acquisitions. This deal makes up for another one that I'm still PO'ed about. Forget about any other deals from the Canadian AllStar Industries. They quoted me $20 under list for the Crown amps I'm needing. There's always Amazon! Your welcome to come by and take a listen. Send a PM and we can work out a time. It's 77.1 miles between Pasadena and Murrieta. That's not too much of a ride, much on a Sunday morning.

    Yamaha SP2060

All I received from the AllStar was a "transaction receipt" that only listed the charge amount as $690.33 CAD. Which came to 516.97 US Dollars. So, I dunno what I was charged for tax and all that? I tried to get a hold of the salesman, Warren Strum, but he no longer works there. I'm actually happy with how my deal turned out. Sorry to hear that you guys weren't so. It still beats Ebay. I have a variety of pro amps powering my front, center channel and sub all active. My plan is to use the Yamaha SP2060 to go active with my surround Khorns. I'm looking into picking up a couple (three, maybe that would be a "few"?) Crown amps from AllStar, different salesman, Michael McMahon. They currently don't have any used amps in stock, but he said he could swing a package deal on multiple units. I'd be surprised if he could beat the going US prices.

I was extremely fortunate to get the only unit that was basically new. Fjd, I feel even more so now that I've heard your story.
  22. Automotive paints and primers can be used to achieve a finish that's more home friendly. Although one needs equipment and know-how to do it properly. The influx of China tools, paint guns and such make projects like this economically possible.

    Yamaha SP2060

I just received the last one complete with the box, paperwork and cord for 516.97 US Dollars. I inquired back in December and didn't get one because of the lack of box, plus these units were 8 years old... I got interested again when I found out the price listed was CAD. So, I emailed the seller a couple of weeks ago and he said: "Turns out you got lucky – you’re getting the last one we have, which has been designated as a “spare” all its life. It’s still got its original packaging and it’s not unlikely that it’s never even been plugged in." It is spotless! No doubt about it looks and smells brand new!
  24. Yes, the surface of the horn isn't smooth at all. The things were riddled with slight deviations or indentations all over the horn. As you know a current production 402 is basically smooth except for the transition between the flat areas on the inside (closest to the driver) to the curved sections at the exit of the horn. I've heard this transition area being called mumps. The old horns didn't really have an observable "mump transition" like a new horn has. Also the front outside edges were wavy, not straight or even. I know that the old horn material did not stand up to heat very well. It literally gets soft and bendable from sitting in the sun just for a few minutes and then takes a curve.
  25. Even if you sold 402's I wouldn't believe that you could rip someone off considering what I seen of your expert knowledge and understandings. It wasn't my intention to point any fingers, I simply felt the need to warn others that all 402's are not equal.
