  1. Mark, I have a 145 that had the arm damaged (bent) in shipping to me. I plan on using it in a second system. I would be happy to take it off your hands. Hopefully the arm is still good. The Thorens replacement parts company in Germany wants almost $300 for a new arm. Chris

  4. John, Just saw this post today, been out of town. My CW's were unfinished from the factory then rubbed with many coats of Linseed oil. Over the years the Linseed yellowed, giving sort of blonde look to them. I sanded the crapola out of them before bringing 'em to a finishing shop were they were stained to the color you see and sealed. The shop could have stained them just about any color I wanted as long as it was darker than the blonde hue they were at the time. I think yours look pretty darned good the way they are. Good Luck, Chris
  5. ---------------- On 5/6/2004 1:02:24 PM StuDog wrote: Chris, Do you recall the name of that plexiglass shop and the city they were in? Thanks Stuart ---------------- Stuart, If memory serves me, it was the Plastic Factory in Gardena, California. The other distributor contact Novus gave me back then was Victory Display, also in Gardena. I believe VD also fabricates custom Plexiglass/Arcylic enclosures. Good Luck, Chris
  6. I hear the term "euphonic" bandied about by audio types quite a bit. I looked it up at www.thesaurus.com and came up with the following - "Synonyms: accordant, agreeable, assonant, canorous, clear, concordant, dulcet, euphonic, euphonious, harmonic, in tune, mellifluous, mellow, melodic, musical, pleasing, resonant, silvery, soft, songful, sweet, sweet-sounding, symphonic, symphonious, tuned, tuneful, well tuned" If that's what a Cary excells at, maybe I shouldn't have sold it. Chris
  7. Gary, Look around BEFORE you buy the dustcover. I forgot to mention that my Champion came with one. The retail was $200 and the dealer knocked it down to $150. Later when looking for plexiglass polish (Novus, HIGHLY recommended), I happened on a shop that sold it and also fabricated custom plexiglass. The owner said he had fabricated many, many custom turntable dust covers and usually charged in $65-$75 range for far better quality than the oem covers readily available. ---------------- On 5/6/2004 11:59:45 AM Ray Garrison wrote: Why in the world would anyone marry somebody with whom they can not be open and honest? I guess women are from Venus, men are from Mars and you're from Uranus. JUST KIDDING, please don't get angry, couldn't resist... Chris
  8. ---------------- On 5/6/2004 10:20:33 AM Lon Armstrong wrote: I think he just DID. ---------------- My first tube amp with my Cornwalls was a Zen ©. It DID sound very, very good. However, it was not enough power to do more than casual listening of certain types of music. The Zen had problems (power and clarity issues) with many kinds of more complex music at anything more than very moderate levels. My next amp was a Cary 300SEI (I believe the same amp as the "Cary 300b Integrated" you speak of in an earlier post.). For me, in my system and room, the Cary outperformed the Zen in almost every way. Of course, please take into consideration that the Cary retails for $5,000 and the Zen was, I believe, $600 at the time. I have since sold the Cary and am now using a NOS Valves Scott 299B while I ponder the pursuit of MORE POWER. Options under consideration include 845 based SET monoblocs, vintage Mac, a KT100 based integrated or monoblocs built by Cy Brenneman and a couple of others. I'm in brain-lock. Chris
  9. How 'bout, Lucinda Williams Roseanne Cash Norah Jones (imho her new album definitely has a country twist) Maura O'Connell Linda Gail Lewis and I totally agree with Fini re/k.d. Lang. Chris

Your rapidly growing collection of old mono Blue Notes is SCREAMING for one of these! ---------------- I've seen Allan's table. That picture does not even come close to portraying just how gorgeous it is! The only problem, imho, is that Allan fails to realize how rare his talent for restoration is. Or just how freaking an*l he is. Just kidding. Chris Allan, I'll defintely be seeing you at Helen's performance. What others do you recommend? And, are you going to eso's next Sunday?
  11. ---------------- On 5/4/2004 8:43:29 AM garymd wrote: Nice looking table Chris! I assume by your post you're pleased with it and don't regret the expenditure. Can I ask how much you paid? You can pm me if you like. It's on my short list. Any other info you can provide would be great. Thanks. ---------------- Gary, The more I hear it, the more I appreciate it. Not to mention, the after sale service has been great. However, I understand the same can be said for VPI. If I had it to do over again, I might go for the level below Champion. That would be the "Emotion" at about half the cost for the table. Also, the RB250 arm (when wired properly) is considered by many to be a bang for the buck leader among tonearms. Lastly, it's my suspicion that a low-medium output moving coil cartridge combined with a good, quiet phono stage really top things off when you're looking for a clean, detailed sound. However, some might find the sound in my system too "analytical" and forward. Last night I opened one of the latest Acoustic Sounds "Greatest Jazz Ever" series 45rpm records, Duke Ellington & Ray Brown's "This One's For Blanton". Holy scheisse! I thought the piano and bass were in the room! This is one great record. TT cost table - $1,500 arm - RB250 with "Six Stream" wiring, $350 cartridge - Benz Micro Ace low output moving coil, $450 I've seen similar rigs on Audiogon going for $1,200-$1,500. In fact there is an "Emotion" on there right now being sold by the same guy I bought my EAR 834P phono stage from. Chris
  12. My Clearaudio Champion sounds great. At first I felt stupid and embarassed over how much it cost. Later, after considering what many people (myself included) spend on their homes for widow coverings, landscaping, carpeting, and other things that please the eye, it didn't seem so exorbitant. Not to mention, I expect it will give years upon years of enjoyment to my entire family. Chris
  13. Not really a jazz cut, but I recently heard and then bought a cd that includes Bruddah Israel Kamakawiwo'ole singing "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World". I swear it nearly brought me to tears and even more so after I looked into his personal story. My appreciation for Hawaiian music is growing. Chris
  14. Gary/Craig, Maybe you guys can help me find a copy of "Up With People"? Chris

BTW, I'm not sure if it is an import. Chris

Promise to take care of them and keep them forever. Please contact me here or at patrick@mccarthykroes.com Thank you, patrick ---------------- Patick, Another Forum member and I are in the begining stages of restoring a pair of Decorater Cornwalls very similar (1976, Alnico, Type B, etc.) to mine. Right now, it appears as though they will have a type of Piano Black finish. If you are interested, let me know. Price will depend on finishing cost. However, we are doing this for the enjoyment, not for profit. Chris

I thought you'd ordered a pair from Cyrus! Allan ---------------- Allan, I was getting ready to order a pair from Cyrus, then I heard my buddy rave about his MC225/Corn combo. Soon after he got another 225, set both up as monoblocs and was even further impressed. Add that to hearing your MC30's/Corn rig and I began to think Mac might be the way. Anyway, right now I'm in brain-lock over what to do. As far as a listening session goes, you're on! There's going to be a Socal Horn Group soire' at eso's home on the 16th. I believe it's pretty near your house. How 'bout getting together before or after? I've got a few more of the Acoustic Sounds 45rpm jazz series records for you to hear. Not to mention the new Diana Krall/Elvis Costello collaboration SACD is pretty good. Chris
  18. Tom, I recently sold my Nos Valves 299A to a forum member after I replaced it with a 299B (also Nos Valves). I bought the "B" for the "Extra" input is has. Anyway, I had originally planned to use the "B" in my main system while shopping for a monoblocs/pre amp combination and then move it to a second system. So far, this dang thing sounds so nice I haven't felt the need to follow through with my plan. Not to mention Craig is a kick to deal with. Also, I have the same case you do, only stained a little more reddish in color. Loving my 299, Chris PS For those listening to vinyl, I recommend the new Nora Jones record either from Blue Note or Classic Records. I realize the more popular she gets, the less some people will think of her. Too bad for them, this is a really great album.
  19. C&S, Since your recommendations were posted, I have purchased - Tito Puente, "Gozo Mi Timbal" (SACD) The Jazz On The Latin Side All Stars, volumes 1 & 2 (cd) Both of them are great! Chris
  20. Great thread. HT is way overrated imho. You can only listen to rockets taking off, bullets whizzing by, cars driving behind you or helicopters flying overhead so much before the thrill wears off. Not to mention, multi-channel music sounds weird to me. I disassembled my HT about 3 years ago and have since moved to a smaller home. We chose to get a piano for my son instead of putting the HT back together. Good choice. Tubes, vinyl and SACD have put music back into our home. Besides, listening to music has one great advantage over HT. You don't have to sit on your arse while listening. Regards, Chris PS Anyone looking for a good deal on a HT receiver? I have a Sherwood-Newcastle R-845(?) and a Marantz SR8000(?) gathering dust in my garage. Actually they are covered and boxed.
  21. Allan, You ARE the Jazz Sensei. Thanks for the info. I'll see you at the Four Points Sheraton in May to hear Helen Merrill! Chris

They can always be found on e-bay or Audiogon, so I'm not so sure if this is good or bad; good for the relative price, but maybe bad if they are over rated. So if anyone has experience with the FT-101 or 101A I would like to read your comments. On a side note, do analog tuners like this require periodic calibration? Thanks, Mark ---------------- Check out the fmtunerinfo.com website. There is some good info on MD tuners there. Chris
  23. My daughters first car was a nearly cherry 1991 (?) Chrysler LeBaron convertable turbo given to her by Grandpa. Two years later my wife and I bought her a new Volkswagon Jetta turbo. When I die, I want to come back as one of our generations kids. My first car was a 1965(?) Dodge Dart with the famous Slant Six engine given to me by my older brother. Some say the SS was one of the best engines ever made. Chris
  24. Ed, Your Cornwalls are gorgeous! All this talk about multi-channel hi-rez formats has me wishing I could find another pair of Decorators and maybe an unfinished La Scala stained to match the CW's for the center. Could you possibly post a couple more photos of your speakers? I'd like to put together a desktop backround picture of various CW's. Thanks, Chris

I'm betting they could make your pair look wonderful. Chris
