  1. mr84monte- No, this is not a stupid move at all. I believe that the most important purchase in audio is the speakers. No where else will you get more "bang for the buck" than in speakers - it's the one component that can and will drastically change the sound of your system - more so than any other audio purchase. Spend money on good speakers and your ears will be happy. Chorus II's are a very good choice as a main speaker. They will benefit from better amplification, but your Kenwood will drive them. Get the Chorus II's, then upgrade the receiver or amp when the dollars are available. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  2. I've seen this happen quite frequently, where a seller sells them outside of ebay. I've also seen where the seller will post an item without reserve, then pull the auction before it ends when the bid is too low for the seller. While such actions are certainly "uncool", are such tactics specifically prohibited by ebay? ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  3. tblasing - This could be like many auto mechanics - all of the cars they work on run good, but they don't ever get to work on thier own. OTOH, folks I know who work at John Deere get the latest lawn care equipment from them, since they get great deals. I wonder how many Klipsch employees have thier names on the list for the new Heritage? ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 4. Maxg, the price vs performance ratio is certainly an advantage to the Lascala. I do prefer the look of the Belles though - but I'm not sure that a potential purchaser would agree that the Belle is worth that much more at list vs. the Lascala - given similar performance characteristics. IIRC, the Belles were priced at 40-50% more than the Lascalas. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  5. Your listening rooms prove that Klipsch can enhance the WAF. So who says you can't have a houseful of Klipsch without angering the wife? Those rooms look gorgeous - my wife gives them her stamp of approval Wonderful job, Wes! ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  6. There's no tracking on the JBL pro shipments - they are shipped by freight truck. Check your credit card balance to see when they charged your unit(s), then figure 5 to 10 days after for delivery. The shipper called me the day before to make sure I would be there. This made it easy to coordinate the delivery time. Not sure that this will happen in every case though. BTW - Polarity with the JBL's: I hooked these up initially as black = positive, which is the convention with the majority of JBL pro gear. They sounded good, until I took another look at the spec sheet. Spec sheet says these are positive polarity (positive to red connection). Most JBL pro is the other way around, where black = positive, but I understand that some newer units are red = positive. According to JBL's literature, the 4638 is positive = red. So, I switched them to red = positive, and they sound much better (more effortless too - output to spare), especially at higher volumes. EDIT: I just checked the 4648A spec sheet (which Kenratboy and TBrennan have) and it is black = positive. This clarifies this issue, since I saw Kenratboy's post that his is black = positive. So, 4638 - red = positive 4648 - black = positive So, watch your polarity, folks! ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 7. Just got 'em hooked up - driving 2 of them with a Crown CE 1000 and a Behringer Feedback Destroyer as EQ (haven't done much with this though). Initial impression: Holy Bass!!!!!! These absolutely shred the Velodyne I got rid of (CT150), just hooked up and level balanced by ear, with no real tweaking. More bass than I know what to do with - I could become the least popular guy on my block in a hurry. I certainly feel comfortable enough with them to eagerly proceed with the tweaks (ground hum and EQ). Certainly worth the dough. I will give a full review after I get a chance to play with the BFD, do some sweeps, and play some software - but I am initially very pleased. I anticipated sound more "off the mark" and boomy, peaky bass - but for "just hooked up and no real tweaks" they are impressive. More to come....... ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 8. dbImage - They do, but the home JBL that most people see (what can be found in Best Buy and other mass market dealers) does not bear much resemblance with the JBL professional stuff that you see in theaters. The JBL pro stuff is highly efficient, horn loaded, and will not break up at high volume. Just when our beloved Klipsch at home start straining, the JBL pro gear hits it's stride - that stuff can literally blow your eardrums out (with no distortion, I might add). I use Klipsch Heritage (Cornwall II's) in my HT because they do an excellent job of replicating that sound in my home, at a price I can afford. They do have that "slam factor", the jump out of your seat feeling that you get in a good theater (good subs help too). In a smaller living room environment, the Klipsch are more than enough to get that full, clean volume and dynamic range I want - and for music, they are even better. I am, in fact, experimenting with a pair of JBL pro woofer cabinets (these are the 4638's taked about in the subwoofer area). JBL pro is blowing these out over at their online tent sale - $216 per cabinet - original list $1100. Huge output for the dollars. I resorted to this to get more output to keep up with my Cornwalls - for a cheap price. These are large though, and plain black cabinets, so they are not exactly stylish, while the real wood grains of the Klipsch are decidedly more attractive. At list, neither Klipsch or JBL are cheap - but you do get what you pay for. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  9. Just the fact that when you go to the products page and see that "NEW" star logo on the Heritage pages, and at the bottom of the Klipschorn specifications page it states: Years built: 1946 - That's a pretty and most welcome sight to see ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 10. FYI - Saw this on Ebay this morning. Here's a good deal on a single Heresy in Black. This won't last long - BIN for $165. link ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  11. I like to think of the Chorus as the Cornwall II's brother. The Chorus uses the same tweeter/squawker as the CII. Good overall sound with an easier to handle tower design - most rooms can accomodate them, WAF not withstanding. Good full range main with that "Heritage tone". It's a ported design, so it has that "slam factor" like the Cornwalls do. The Chorus II uses newer mid/squawker horns and an additional 15" passive radiator, instead of ports. I think that the bass in the Chorus II is a bit "tighter", but no less impressive. The Khorns' horn loaded bass bests any of Klipsch's non-horn loaded models though - once you become addicted to Khorn bass, your wallet is in trouble. One advantage with the Chorus is that the listener can "toe in" the speakers for best image at the listening position, vs. the Khorns requiring the corner placement. You will have some freedom to experiment with the Chorus. The Chorus are certainly worth considering - if you "take the leap" by getting a pair, and then you end up not liking them, they have good resale value. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 12. Krew, I am using an Outlaw 750 with my Klipsch Cornwall II as mains in my HT. Some have said that this combo is "bright" or "harsh" - I think this depends on your taste and what other components are in the chain. I like to think of the Outlaw amp as "true and factual" - it does not hide anything, it amplifies whatever you put through it without coloration - warts and all. If you have heard the ATI amps (or can demo one somewhere) - they are "brothers" so to speak - similar electronics, built in the same factory. This will give you somewhat of a demo, if you can find one of these. Parasound, Denon, and B&K are some amps which are thought of as "warm" - which some prefer with the Klipsch. If the Outlaw is not to your liking, you may consider one of these. A clean preamp will go a long way towards the sound you get - and the 950's initial reviews are stellar in terms of it's sound quality. I highly recommend this choice - I think that the 950/770 combo will have far better sonics than has ever been seen before at this combined price (about $2100 plus shipping) - an excellent deal for separates. Even if you buy another brand of amp, look closely at the 950 - there's a reason for the two month wait for orders. The 950 will break the price/performance barrier for HT preamps, to be sure. If you want a 950, get on the waiting list NOW - even if you are not sure. Outlaw will not charge you for it until it is ready for delivery - and you can simply decide not to buy it. They will not take your credit card info until it is ready to ship, so the reservation is "no obligation to buy". Outlaw does allow for a 30 day return/refund policy if you don't like the gear. All you would be out is the shipping. Outlaw's customer service is excellent too - they are genuinely concerned about customer satisfaction. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 13. Thank you very much for that post, Ed - I've started several searches on this topic and could not find this. I've been thinking that a Klipschorn music only system may be in the cards someday - if I stumble across a great deal on an unwanted set of Khorns. I'm not too skilled electrically - but I wonder if some kind of "A/B" switch can be made out of such a unit pictured above. It would be handy to throw a switch for mix mono center vs. 5.1 discrete, for example. I have a mental picture of a unit that runs three discrete leads out of the preamp into a switch - one set of outputs has the 3 mix mono out leads, the other has the front three channels discrete. As I say, my electrical knowledge is relatively infant - so I'm not sure whether or not this is possible. The "Beast" - My signature is a play on those old amusement park ads hyping up their latest creation (a roller coaster junkie, I am). I anticipate that it will be finished before the end of May (and hopefully much before). The project has been a joint effort between the Herkert consortium and Klipsch BBS - updates will be posted soon! ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 14. Ed, how is this Belle center wired? I am assuming that PWK does this with 2 channel music somehow - but I must acknowledge that I don't understand the concept of the Belle/Klipschorn wiring scheme as it applies to 2 channel. I understand that the center is to fill the hole in the center of the image of the widely spaced Klipschorns, but PWK isn't doing this with any surround sound processing or SACD/DVD-A - or is he? My point here is that my comments regarding my dislike of multi-channel effects on 2 channel audio is the fault of the processing in the preamp or AVR - which tries to create a center channel from the 2 channel source. I am assuming that this is what the original poster was doing - using the preamp or AVR to create a sound field from a 2 channel source. I have found that opinion varies here - some like these effects, some don't. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  15. Now that's one "component" of your family that will never need a "replacement" or "upgrade" All the best to you, your family, and it's newest member! ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  16. This totally makes sense to me. I find surround sound fields to be more of a distraction than a benefit, where two channel music is concerned. I have not yet had a "5 channel stereo" function on a preamp/receiver that I was satisfied with - although I must say that I don't really shop for a processor with this in mind. I tend to believe that the best 2 channel music reproduction is played back through 2 channels. I am curious about the newer SACD/DVD-A formats, but I don't feel like leaping into these new formats until one emerges as a clear winner in format. I typically wait for such new formats to take hold - the best of formats are no good to me if they do not have staying power. Both are relatively "infant" - I'll be curious to see where these go in the future. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  17. Boa - I don't think you have offended anyone here - certainly not me. Some think that this method is a bit unorthodox, and sometimes not going with the flow brings lots of questions. That's fine with me. Those who are maverick enough on this forum to give this a try allows us one more option to build our masterpieces. We won't know if we don't try - and the feedback on this forum from those first "mavericks" suggests to me that this is worthwhile. I think it is safe to say that this would not be happening if it were not for the deep JBL discounts. To purchase 2 cabinets plus amplification/EQ at list would be $3000 - the cabinets list for $1100 each, and I have two. I'm doing the 2 cabinets, amp, and EQ for $800 total - much less than the otherwise preferable SVS and Velodyne units would cost. Now this becomes a viable option for my system - a great opportunity to upgrade my woofage dirt cheap ($300 total upgrade cost, after selling the Velo). If dollars were not an issue, I would persue other alternatives - but then again, an unlimited budget would make this too easy! Part of the challenge for me is to extract the maximum performance out of every dollar - and this latest addition seems to fit that criteria quite well in my application. Frankly, I find the interest of other forum members on this topic to be quite welcome. I read the 2 channel forum to see what's up over there - and while they do things differently than I would (for the most part), that doesn't make their approach any less valid. After all, we each listen to our own gear, share our experiences, and hopefully learn something. I feel like part of a laboratory experiment! ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 18. KRB wrote: "A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002 WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?" You will all find out....very soon, very soon. Jerry Garcia once sang "all good things in all good time". Boa: We're gonna find out! Based on the reviews here on the forum, I think these will match up well with the Cornwalls (and the soon to be arriving Chorus). I was using a Velodyne CT150 initially, and I found it was "slow", especially on 2 channel. It was a good value, but not ideally matched to high efficiency Klipsch. Based on TBrennan's recommendations several months ago, I began researching the possibility of using the JBL's - and thier limitations. They may not extend as low as the HGS18 or SVS units, but these JBL's should deliver rock solid output down to 25hz in excess of 120 db SPL - with the speed to work well with my heritage Klipsch. I told a friend of mine on the west coast about my little venture (we sold A/V gear together some years back), so he showed his theater sales and installation buddy what we are up to with these JBL's. He thinks we are certified nuts - that the JBL's won't do what his Carver Signatures do, that the JBL's don't go low enough, that we can't get 120+ db output at 25 hz, blah blah blah. I don't think the comments here about these units lie. Sure, you may get lower hz out of some units, and we may need to play with the JBL's to optimize them for our use (what sub don't you need to do this with anyway) - but the bang for the buck here cannot be overstated. They aren't for everybody - but for those with certain needs, are a great cost effective way to get some real low end. More as I know it....this will be quite the experiment. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  19. I will give a thorough review once my amp and eq get here (still in transit), and the system is hooked up. I intend to use it for HT and 2 channel, so I will cover both sides of the equation for you. BTW - I used window cleaner to get the pesky glue from the cabinet tops. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 21. Looks very nice! How do you like the in-walls? Is it customary to ceiling mount those? I know a few folks who like the concept - just curious if you are pleased with them. ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! A Beast is Lurking.........To be unleashed May 2002
  22. They're heeeeeeere!! .........And they're quite large! Very solid build too. There's no doubt that this is serious gear - very rugged. Any suggestions on how to remove that pesky adhesive left by that warning label, that won't harm the vinyl cabinet finish? The cabinets arrived in great shape otherwise. All I need now is the amp and EQ, which is in transit. That wait will drive me crazy! I swear I'm gonna get arrested ------------------ First we Rock, then we Roll! 25. Uh-oh I guess one side effect of the impending Heritage release is the Reference Vs. Heritage debate (which has surfaced here in past threads) - this will be more prevalent since models of both lines will be current, very soon.
