djk ,,i got your link to work today...but that schematic is pretty complicated for me.. i was hoping to make one without the adjuster in it and a little easier to build.Seems alot of us are not crossover gurus but i would like to try to make one i have built ALKs and AAs but those seem easy compared to that Altec model 9....Rick

I couldnt find the crossover at the link you gave me,djk....,i signed up at altec forum but still cant use it??So dont assume i didnt like your help..ok..So please post the crossover schematic no matter what djk said.The guy im helping does not know speaker stuff and we need a schematic.djk what is it you think i want to hear anyway????Rick

I dont think the pipe foam hurt the bass it should help the horn couple to the wall..Horn=unbroken flare..right?So what happened to her bass?Maybe foam not on right...foam not on horz. part of bass binn...did you retighten all the screws on the terminal block?and on the woofer door?are the speakers in phase and woofers in phase?Easy to get them out of phase when trying new stuff.Phase =...+ from reciever to +on terminal block and the + from the terminal block to the drivers. Alot of people get the bass binn wires crossed when moving them.Since you had good bass before it still should be there now so go back to the basics check everything.Did you take out that screw in the inductor?In another post here BEC has shown metal in the inductor is bad.Well hope this helps Meagain just take a close look at that wiring more than a few of us here have messed up on phase...and some even admit it...lol.Rick

Im helping buddy at work fix up some Altec 1234 with 511-B not sure of the driver but it takes 909-8A diaphram.I need a schematic for a crossover.. the one on it is bad and would like to try make a better one for him.I had old 3 way crossover from parts express and wired it in for him he is happy with that but im sure it has wrong crossover points.The old crossover in the altec just didnt work right seemed to cut the mid horn out almost...buddy at work cant believe how good that one sounds now...lol,,,so if we put in a correct crossover might even be better.Rick

Please seal the tailboard and the horz. bass binn board to the wall with 1 inch pipe insulation or 1 1/2 if your gap is to big.Im sure BEC will be glad to help you out with upgrade on the crossover as well ALK will to.Build a False corner for the one speaker by the fireplace, only needs to be as high as the bass binn so looks good to...will take awhile to make a good false corner there are alot of ways to make one and how good you want it to look.Best way is to make one where the speaker sits on it...kinda hard to explain but there are pics on the forum...just imagine a corner of the room including floor cut out of a room.I got pics of the crossovers i updated and pics of the ALKs i made not that hard to do. But for now just seal the tailboards and listen to those Ks and have fun....remember it is all about the fun....Rick

Wow those look good just clean the wood and rub them down with boiled linseed oil [bLO] and make sure you put the rags outside.The crossovers can be upgraded easy you can get new oil caps from BEC and maybe change the woofer inductor,take out the diodes if there are any and then do A-B with the old crossover.I cant imagine why you dont like the finish, in the pics it looks great ,,,clean with 25% mineral spirits and 75%BLO should do the trick.Make sure you seal the tailboard and the horz. part of the bass binn to the corner.I would try to get a old HK430 twinn powerd reciever to,,,,i think you will like it.Rick

I run into the same stuff where i work if the idea doesnt come from the top they wont listen to you.They say they want ideas but i think they just want ideas they can turn around and use for thier benifit i have had it happen alot.Rick

Buy them as soon as possible if your wanting some K-Horns dont worry about the woofers.Rick

I agree with Jeff... Klipsch needs to force Bestbuy to make Klipsch displays atleast work, the only other dealer in KC area is Accent sound and they dont have Heritage on display.Rick

Jeff you could get your table saw out and make K-Horns but you got to buy the wood, drivers,crossover and most of all your time to work on it...how much do you charge for 1 hour your time???Have you ever made a compond picture frame its not as easy as most think.You will also need a very nice table saw.Alot of things seem easy to make till you start to make them, some members here have made K-Horns but they have alot of wood working skills.I work part time at a bike shop in high income area and alot of the wealthier people want us to fix wal-mart bikes for 2-3 dollars an hour or even for free but when they find out a flat repair is 18 bucks plus tube they get mad.I guess they think i dont need to eat or have a house while they drive 60,000 suv.Rick

I would think it should be the other way around,,,,so maybe the K-Horns are not sealed...maybe something wrong with the K-Horns.I have LaScalas and Cornwalls side by side and loudness wise the Scala can beat the Corns but not in the bass dept. but with them both on you cant tell.Maybe you should check the crossover connections and drivers.Rick

Im helping a buddy at work with his Altec pro..no model name but i think it has 511-B horn but the driver has no markings on it.The crossover has 2 headphone type jacks for inputs and a adjusting knob number on the crossover plate is 1234c.I could use a crossover schematic or a new design for it,,,crossover points would be good to.I dont know much about Altecs and i cant find anything at the Altec site.It also looks like the two jacks for inputs change the crossover points.Thanks for any help guys.Rick

Hey D-Man the Scala and k-horn have the same mid horn ..I wont take sides but just wanted to clear this up...That was the main reason i bought LaScalas new in 1980 because of the same top end as the big brother K-Horn and when the Scala was A-B to a Belle the Scala sounded better to me in the voice area.Rick

Amy,I was wondering why most stores dont have the iGroove set up to compare with blose,altec?Bestbuy,Compusa,etc. only have the other brand set up.Also Accent sound here has enough room to set up a small Heritage theater set up ,i asked about Heritage they said only special order. I think Klipsch should atleast send some Heresys to them for display.Just my thoughts Rick

Why not buy the caps from Bob he has them and you will get the brackets ready to go...he is very helpfull to... plus you would help a forum member ....just a thought...what has Granger done for you for free? Rick

I would say get parts express catalog and find some speakers that will fit in the holes and be done best thing to learn on is these old ones so when you find some Klipsch you want to refurbish you will know how to do it.Play around with them and learn see what makes them sound better and have fun. My twinn boys use to come home with some cool stuff out of the trash we would fix them up and they would sell to friends best way to learn how to fix speakers is by doing it.Ask any good car mechanic he didnt learn on a lotus he learned on a old pinto,honda,but now he knows what to do to any car.Its called learning.Good luck Rick

Jeff you could re-veneer the motor board in birch to match the rest of the speaker or make the front a different wood for a contrast.veneering the motor board would be easy project but would need to take speaker all apart so drivers dont get damaged while your in there doing that you could do memebers ideas on bracing the cab. and crossover upgrades.Rick

Well i got both roof top ant. and use dipole, the dipole is picky about what way its postioned but sometimes it works better than my roof top ant....When i hooked my sons 430 up with dipole it got better signal on some stations than my 430 hooked to the roof top.Michael try making your dipole longer or just use some speaker wire and raise it up to the ceiling see if that does anything ,one summer i got on the roof and lowered the position of my roof top seems i had it inline with power lines and it works better now.The mute button and knob is just to keep noise down inbetween stations i usually dont use it i like to try new stations at night sometimes and the mute will cut them off.The signal strenth meter is different on 730 the farther to the left the better the signal.Hope this helps.Rick
