  1. Thanks to all. And thanks for the tip for cartridge.
  2. Thanks, well this is nothing fancy. Stands serve the purpose, made cheaply but sturdy and look better to my eyes than what I could buy localy (especially for that amount of money) . About the turntable, what cart are you using with Philips? I bent my original philips needle the other day when cleaning the turntable. I was thinking about new Ortofon 2M red.
  3. They have to be coz they are high If I remember correctly they are 16 kg each. Anyway this is almost as the speaker weight. But the center of gravity is of course on the lower part of the stand.
  4. I needed speaker stands customized according to my listening area and fitted exactly for my speakers. Since I cannot find anything near to required measures at the stores I decided to do the stands myself. My speakers are in the bedroom so I had to overcome the height of the bed and adjust the height of the speaker to my height of view. Therefore the stand height is 32 inches. I took approach similar to the Skyline speaker stands, two plates made of wood tied together with iron rods and put on the spikes. For wooden plates I took two thickest Ikea meat cutting boards I could find, glued together in three layers of bamboo wood. Upper plate is cut to the dimensions of the base of the speaker. Threaded iron rods are fitted into 3 inches PVC pipes that are at the end of the assembly filled with quartz sand but not completely. Spikes are made of hardened steel. The seats for spikes are chiseled into the bottom side of the wooden plates. Since I made these during the winter when temperatures are low and I could not wait for paint on the PVC pipes to dry (the legs of speaker stands), I finished them with self-adhesive foil in grey color. Not as good as paint but I can do that later. At the end the speakers are put on vibrapods.
  5. I was given an old Akai am2850 amp (1982) by a friend, his new flat is too small for amp plus sansui sp7100 speakers. I took it to a tech, he mesured it, it is AOK within original specs. Tech advised that there is no need for recap at this time. Cleaned it, changed power chord. Compared to my other new amps the sound is reach and full. Just like I want from an old amp. I think I can notice a little duller sound in the bass though, but it may be that 4ohm old Infinity bass is a bit too much to drive. Anyway, it is a welcomed change in my house.
  6. I finally got my Kord UktraFlex 10 Gauge speaker wire :-) Terminated with Cambridge Audio banana plugs and forks, with nice Knu Pants.
  7. They sounded mighty . To write frankly, I think that the room they were placed in, was not enough for them. Maybe placement was not quite right too. We were listening some rock, classical music and R&B. For a start the amount of sound was impressive. Even at low volume one could feel the sound from the speakers through the body. I was expecting to hear delicate sound of wind from the organ pipes, which they surely can present to the listener, but the room acoustics was bad. On the other hand, every bit of “Money” by Pink Floyd was clearly audible from the right directions/positions in the room. It was almost scary.
  8. I haven’t got anything today, but I got the chance to listen Tannoy Westminster Royal GR speakers. They were paired with two Luxmans M900u in mono block mode powering Tannoys with 600 W.
  9. I suppose that both sets of speakers were auditioned with the same amplifier in the same room/speaker positions and the source/recording was the same. If in these conditions RP-260 sound better to you, than you could consider spending more money for that . How would you describe "more clear" and "better distortion" in more words? I would tend to connect "more clear" with horn driver. If Klipsch realy improved that horn comparing to the RF series, than you could be among the first poeple here to actualy prove this is true in real life. And yes, I was in similar situation few years ago when buying my set of RF speakers. I am stil sorry I did not spent extra money on larger speakers in the lineup.
  10. Hipsters digging through piles of cassettes means more LPs for other poeple So....I totaly support that trend
  11. These are in church/cathedral in our town. Often have the chance for listening concerts there. Love the reflected sound from the walls going through my body
  12. I hated when my deck chewed the tapes. Could not wait the CDs came up, the freedom of manipulating them over cassette tapes was beyond beleif
  13. It sholud be firm enough to hold a little train Congratulations, good job.
  14. I saw it last week...great documentary. Wander how much freedom Tommy Tedesco's son had when doing the movie.
  15. That snake looks dangerous, can it hurt humans? Of course I like the first photo better because it is clearer. It shows the snake in its full and almost three-domensional . The most dangerous snake where I live is the long-nosed viper (Vipera ammodytes). If it bite man is usually dead within minutes.
  16. Fuji Astia positive film, Yashica Mat camera
  17. How is that power conditioner affecting your system? Can you describe the difference of adding the conditioner, in pros/cons terms?
  18. When I was buying my speakers, I narrowed my choice to B&W685 and Klipsch RF42 II. Both paires connected to receivers in about the same price range (B&W with Marantz SR5023 - Stereo Receiver and Klipsch with Onkyo TX 8050). I could have gone out of the shop with any of those sets and be satisfied. But I chose Klipsch because there was a bit more clarity in higher frequencies and separation between the instruments whan auditioning the classical music. You realise that these are the budget speakers, not big floorstanders. On the other hand, I had conversation with the guy the other day that sells very expensive hi-fi equipment (eg. Tannoy, Horning, Chord, Shindo...). His preferencies are quality listeting at low volume, so he prefers very efficient speakers with low-power tube amplification. Taking his reasoning into acocunt, he would take Tannoys, Australian WHT loudspeakers or Kipsch LaScala before B&W.
  19. Photo taken while peculiar sun light hit below the cloudy sky. Nikon F90X, Agfa Precisa slide film...
  20. It is ordinary piece of equipment if you want to keep your bike chain clean. At the same time easiest way to clean it.
  21. Moray James, Thank you for the links. Following them I found one short topic regarding speaker location and image quality that helped me very much. Needless to say that I have been investigating this for quite some time now, and although there are theories, they were all either not applicable to my room or offer expensive solution to room acoustics problems. Instructions that I found following your link was so simple I had to try them. (http://www.nutshellhifi.com/Arieltxt2.html#ps ) In short: The best imaging and spatial qualities result with 50 to 55 degree spacing between the left and right speakers, the tweeters placed towards the inside, and both speakers aimed at a point about 1 to 2 feet in front of the listener. In effect, this forms an equilateral triangle that ends about a foot short of your nose. Visualize a sphere with a 1 metre radius extending in all directions outward from the tweeter; keep this imaginary sphere free of obstructions of any kind. If your room is big and uncluttered enough to provide a free radius of 1.5 metres, so much the better. The less junk there is in the immediate vicinity of the speaker, the better it will sound. (No, various room-damping tricks won't help if the free-space criteria can't be met. You can't fool Mother Nature!). When the toe-in and spacing are correct, you will hear a perfectly even distribution of sound and a well-proportioned impression of space on nearly all stereo recordings. I haven’t been able to accommodate the above requirements exactly, but I hear noticeable difference in connection to better overall clarity of the sound, definition of instruments, clarity of performer’s voice etc. It seems that now I have a good starting point for thinking about sound treatment.
